6 22nd Annual Menno Haven Golf Classic The tournament that helps support the care of Menno Haven residents. THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 2013 AT PENN NATIONAL FOUNDERS COURSE, FAYETTEVILLE, PA On June 6th, we will hold our 22nd Annual Golf Classic with the proceeds going to our Benevolent Care Fund to support the care of residents who have depleted their financial resources. The 2012 Classic, by far was our most successful in 21 years and we hope to even do better this year with everyone’s support. We would like to invite all golfers to join us for an enjoyable day on the Penn National Founders Course. The day will include plenty of food, prizes special events, golfers’ appreciation package and a beautiful and challenging course. One major sponsor opportunity is for businesses to donate a variety of items. Last year we initiated a new offering for individuals to sponsor a tee, green, cart or be a patron in memory of or in honor of a friend or loved one. Last year we had eight such sponsorships. We are again offering these opportunities and invite everyone to consider this special way to honor or remember. We hope that everyone who reads this participates in some way. 7 Residents Make their Mark with MEMORIES IN THE MAKING Two years ago, Life Enrichment staff on our campuses caught wind of a new initiative for dementia patients. It was a way to “think outside of the box” and reach the residents who most often seem unreachable. After intense training and preparation, the team began to work with residents in Personal Care and Nursing on the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memories in the Making® initiative, allowing them to express themselves with paints, paper, and canvas a medium many of them had never laid a hand on. “A few of our residents are experienced artists,” explained Katie Ackerman, director of life enrichment at Menno Haven. “They often try to recreate scenes they have created in the past or they take time to explain the techniques they are using. Either way, they are attempting to express themselves and to connect, and that, in itself, is a success.” Started in 1986 by a family member of an alzheimer’s patient, the Memories in the Making® Art program proves value in the creative process of making the art and expressing feelings and emotions trapped inside. The ensuing sense of accomplishment brings renewed joy and selfrespect to the patient. The initiative is now an international sensation with more than 4,000 participants weekly; 300 of them submitting artwork to feature in the Alzheimer’s Association publications and exhibits. In the last two years, six of our residents were chosen to feature artwork in the Alzheimer’s Association calendar and notecards. The Alzheimer’s Association website states: “The artists speak with powerful brush strokes of color and tentative tracings of line. They pull us into the world of an individual with Alzheimer's. As we look at their paintings, we see their stories in a language that needs no words. Their paintings show us glimpses of who they were and who they still are.” At Penn Hall, Lucy Funk, 101 years old, uses watercolor paints to create a masterpiece in her Memories in the Making® session with Life Enrichment Assistant Kelly Kitzmiller. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, nationwide more than 4,000 participants enjoy a session with a trained Memories in the Making® leader each week with some 800 new leaders being trained every year.
