Summer 2009
The President’s Corner
Summer has barely started, and we
are in for a great one!! Already, a
few exciting things have happened:
* First and foremost, we have our
new Director!! Katrina Lawrimore
started on June 1 st , as eager to
start as we have been to welcome
her! She’s been acquainting herself
with our many ongoing projects
and programs. She’s settling in to
her freshly painted office at the
Butler House, the “clean palette”
that will enable her to make her
own mark on our museum and our
community. And she’s anxious to
meet you, as soon as the
opportunity presents itself. See her
own hello plus an article introducing
you to her many skills and talents.
* “All About the Deadrise,” the new
exhibition at the museum, just
opened on May 30 th . It is an
impressive depiction of the history
and culture of the deadrise that uses
videos, photographs, models and
dioramas to instruct. It will be
opened for viewing until Oct.
31st…but don’t delay in seeing it,
as you will want time to visit again
and again!
* We have had a most generous
return on our recent fundraising
drive! Thanks to you who have
already responded, and thanks to
those of you who are about to.
We are grateful for every bit of
support we receive as we strive to
offer events and quality programs to
our membership and to our
community at large. For example,
a brand new summer concert series
is being planned, described further
in this issue!
And these “traditional” events have
long defined summer at the
Reedville Fishermen’s Museum:
* Family Boat Building – the
incredible weekend during which 10
families build their own boat
together, with the expert guidance
of our Boat Shop volunteers. From
hammering and gluing to the
Sunday launch, it is a memorable
experience with an end product that
lasts a lifetime. Stop by to see the
busy workshop under the pavilion
during the last weekend of June.
* The 4 th of July Independence Day
Celebration, a daylong extravaganza
of family fun, food and fireworks!
Of course, the centerpiece is the
3:00 Main Street Parade. LOTS of
volunteers are needed; please call
the office to see what opportunities
await you!
* Children’s Model Workshop, this
year July 27 - 31, when our own
expert model makers (integral to
our exhibits and famous for the
NNRR) teach kids age 10 and under
the fine and enduring craft of
constructing miniature boats and
buildings to scale.
*Another rompin’ stompin’ Pig
Pickin’ with dancing and great food;
in July or August, date TBA.
* Weekly Friday night gatherings at
the museum from 5 to 7, often
under the pavilion when the nights
are nice! A great way to meet new
friends and connect with old ones.
* And is it summer in Reedville
without the Claud Somers and the
Elva C ? Call about a daytime
sailing cruise on the one or an
evening ride on the other! And if
you can wake before dawn, there’s
the spectacular treat of taking the
Elva C. to the pound nets. Where
else can you watch the fishermen fill
their boats to the gunwales with
menhaden.
I think daily about how lucky we all
are, for having these opportunities
and more…so many of them that
sometimes they take us by surprise.
Here, as evidenced throughout this
issue, there are so many
possibilities, so many ways to be
involved, so many ways to give and
to gain. Especially if we are ready,
good things will come along.
This quote seems fitting for a
summer at Reedville. A loooong
time ago, a poet named Ovid said
“Let your hook be always cast… in
2
the stream where you least expect
it, there will be a fish.” I hope you
have a great summer. Cast that line
into our waters and see what
happens.
Meet Our New
Director
The Board of Directors
is pleased to announce the new
Director for the RFM, Katrina
Paris Lawrimore, whose position
began on June 1st.
Katrina’s background is
rich with experiences and
interests that are compatible
with the spirit of the RFM! She
has come to us from
Georgetown, SC, a small
historic waterfront town, where
she was Director of the
Kaminski House Museum for the
last 10 years. She has a B.A. in
American History from Hollins
College and an M.A. in Applied
History with a concentration in
Museum Studies from the
University of South Carolina.
While at the Kaminski House,
she served on the board of the
Georgetown Harbor Historical
Association, an organization that
annually sponsors a wooden
boat show to raise money for
the development of a maritime
museum in Georgetown. A
sailor herself, Katrina was VP
and general manager for 4 years
of “Jolly Rover, Inc.” which
offered day sails and educational
tours on a two-masted, gaffrigged
schooner.
Katrina spent a good
part of her childhood on the
Chesapeake Bay where she
came to appreciate the value of
its maritime heritage and the
need to preserve it for future
generations.
We look forward to her
contributions!
Where do I begin? As I
write this, I’ve been on the job
for three hours, so you will have
to accept my early impressions of
the Reedville Fishermen’s
Museum. First things first! I
cannot say enough about the
wonderful board members, staff,
and most importantly, the
members of the Museum. I
moved to Reedville in early May
and have been meeting people
ever since. Everyone has made
me feel very welcome and is
kindly leading me through the
maze of introductions,
scheduling, security codes and all
the other details that go with any
new position. The encouragement
and support that I
have received since moving here
is greatly appreciated.
I am quite excited about
the future of the Reedville
Fishermen’s Museum. The
support, both volunteer and
financial, that this museum
receives from its members and
the community is phenomenal.
There is a wonderful air of
excitement and enthusiasm about
this institution that is quite
contagious. Together with your
board, I am looking forward to
continuing the wonderful
programs and traditions of RFM
as well as bringing some new
ideas to the museum. The
Reedville Fishermen’s Museum is
truly a gem of the Chesapeake
Bay. It is great to be a part of
this very special place.
I look forward to meeting
many of you and I openly solicit
your comments and suggestions
for furthering the mission of the
Reedville Fishermen’s Museum.
Please feel free to call me at any
time or stop by our offices in the
Butler House.
Deadrise Exhibit Opens
After a few necessary
delays the 13 th major exhibition in
14 years (since the Covington
galleries opened in 1995)), “All
About the Deadrise” has opened
to much acclaim. Given the
subject of this exhibition, it is
considered one of the more
important exhibits we have
mounted so far. Deadrise- hulled
boats are at the core of the way of
life for the people of this area.
These sturdy boats made the
watermen’s efforts more efficient
and made the boat builder’s
methods more successful.
This exhibition will always
be a work –in-progress in that
there is so much to be researched
further, so many more builders
and watermen to be interviewed
and so much more illustrative
material to be uncovered. While
this exhibition is scheduled to be
on view until the 31 st of October it
will certainly be projected far
beyond that date. We will be
adding other interesting elements
to it as we uncover, record and
visualize them.
It took a group of very
dedicated and determined
volunteers to complete this
exhibition in this span of time.
Hopefully visitors will take the
time to read the credit panel as
they complete the tour. It lists the
types of effort that it took to put
this all together and the names of
those who so generously
contributed their time and talent

From the Boat Shop…..
The Boat Shop guys have continued the
annual spring effort to assist in readying our
collection for the coming season. In addition, kits
are completed for the Family Boat Building program
in late June, which is now fully subscribed.
The deadrise skiff under construction in the
shop has been readied for visitors who are
continuing their museum experience vis-a-vis the
new exhibit. The shop has been roped off and
secured so the it can be opened by docents in the
am and shut again when the day is done allowing
visitors a self-guided tour. Shop members will be
available on Tuesdays and Thursdays to discuss the
boat and answer questions.
In addition the Lillian-B, our deadrise skiff
under the pavilion, has been prepared to be the final
stop on the exhibit tour and will be fitted with a
proper sign explaining it's origin and construction.
The idea being that visitors will leave the historical
exhibit and continue their experience in the shop
where a deadrise is under construction in a working
venue and finish by viewing a deadrise that is
completed and out of the water to clearly display its
unique finished construction. They would then
continue by enjoying the Elva C , Claud Somers
and Foggy River.
Traditionally, local businesses (Reedville,
Burgess, Heathsville, Wicomico Church, Kilmarnock
& Callao) have generously donated to cover the
expense of the Saturday night Fireworks. The
generous donations of our local businesses will not
be enough for 2009. The downside of the Fourth
being on a Saturday is that the cost of our firework
display doubles. If you are able to donate please mail
your check to GRA/RFM PO Box 306 Reedville,
VA 22539. Please make a memo that it is for the 4 th
Festival Halle Concert
The Independence Day Weekend continues
on Sunday with a Concert by the Festival
Halle Chorale. This performance will
feature a selection of familiar songs from
the “Americana” genre as well as patriotic
favorites. It will also include an audience sing-along.
The chorale is under the direction of Sharon Freude
and Carnia Kline is the accompanist. The concert is
free, but donations will be appreciated. Join in the
fun at 2 PM on Sunday July the 5th at the
Festival Halle.
Heads Up! “Summer Sundays”
Concert Series!!!
On select Sunday evenings in the summer,
we will host visiting musicians from 6-8:00 PM.
Billed as “picnic dinner concerts,” guests may sit on
the lawn or in seats under the pavilion to enjoy a
variety of types of music, many performing the
songs of the sea. If weather dictates, the show (and
your picnic!) will move to shelter in our own Festival
Halle.
Museum receives grant from
Tidewater Foundation
Wendell Haynie, representing the Tidewater Foundation,
presents the grant to Board VP Tom Miller
On April 30th, the Museum was the
recipient of a grant from the Tidewater Foundation.
This was one of 30 grants given by the Tidewater
Foundation to education and cultural organizations
throughout the counties of the Northern Neck.
Known for its major fundraiser, the Holly
Ball, the foundation has given more than $250,000
over the past decade to museums, schools, and
other social and cultural organizations in Lancaster,
Northumberland, Essex, Westmoreland, and
Richmond counties.
For years they have supported the museum
and we are grateful for it.
“Fishing Gone”
Performance Art
The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum is
delighted to be the first of 10 well-known maritime
venues along the Chesapeake Bay to present this
unique educational and entertaining event, on
Thursday evening, Sept. 24 th at Festival Halle! It
brings together a playwright, an artist, 4 actors and
the audience to experience the multitude of
challenges facing the people of Tangier Island.
Tangier is in the middle of the Chesapeake
Bay. It was visited in 1608 by Captain John Smith,
who gave it the name. In 1814 it was settled by
John Crockett and his sons’ families. Many of his
decedents still live here. The early settlers were
farmers, but with the expanding markets for crab,
fish and oysters, Tangier Islanders became watermen
for generation after generation. The economy of the
island is now being threatened.
6
In FISHING GONE, Playwright Roger
Vaughan highlights the watermen’s dilemma and
captures their struggles. Over fishing is only a part of
the problem. So many other things effect their
livelihood:
The shark population is down in the ocean --
-- the shark preys on rays --- rays love oyster larvae--
Oyster disease impacting not only oysters but crabs -
-- Wind patterns-----Even the Skipjacks effected the
oyster reefs.
But perhaps the biggest problem:
population! Seventeen million people live around
4400 square miles of a shallow Bay.
Is there a solution to help the people of
Tangier and other communities dependent on the
water for their way of life?
You will not want to miss this performance!
Free and open to the public!
Please save the date and watch for more ads & info!
Oyster Grower's Workshop
September 12 th – 10 AM
At Bethany UMC
These workshops concentrate on the construction
and operation of floats used for oyster growth in
local waters. Raising a relatively small number of
oysters, usually 1,000, at one's dock is a simple
and easy way to have oysters for consumption
(after approximately two years) and to add to the
water-filtering function of the oyster population; a
critical factor in restoring the health of the
Chesapeake Bay. These workshops are generally
very well attended. Oysters can be ordered ahead
of time through Cal Boyd at (804) 453-5333.
Elva C Gets a New Mast
Last August the Elva C was rolling heavily on
her way across the Bay to the celebration of the
400 th Anniversary of Tangier Island. Suddenly the
top four feet of the mast snapped off and fell to the
deck. Examination showed that over fifty years rain
water had seeped in behind an iron strap and rotted
the mast completely through.
George Butler of the Reedville Marine
Railway agreed to build a new mast over the winter.
He made eight long 2 x 4’s by gluing end-to-end 20
footers and 16 footers. These eight long pieces
were then tapered and their edges glued together to
form an eight-sided, hollow spar 34 feet long. The
spar was then rounded off except for the lower 8
feet and a 5-foot plug was inserted in either end for
strength.
After receiving multiple coats of clear finish
and the remounting of hardware, the mast will be
stepped in the boat with the assistance of the crane
at the Omega factory, and the Elva C. will be back
in business for the summer.
Foggy River
The Foggy River, the museum’s current inwater
renovation project, made it through the winter
in fine shape at the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum’s
dock. Boat shop volunteers are presently sanding
and painting her topside and cabin in preparation
for a fresh coat of paint. Sometime in June or July,
the Foggy River will visit the Reedville Marine
Railway where numerous types of repair work will be
done. She is in need of a portside rub rail, some
deck work, new cockpit coaming and a new shaft
block.
Future work consists of building a new cabin,
deck and mast. There will be plenty to do once she
arrives back at the RFM dock! If you haven’t done
so yet, please consider joining us in restoring this
fine old Chesapeake deadrise! Our goal is to bring
her back to the way she looked when she originally
left the Reedville Marine Railway in 1961, ready
then for a proud and hearty “career” crabbing,
oystering, and pound net fishing!
MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS
Marianne & Tom Miller
Marianne and Tom both
originally hail from Richmond, and
before retiring to the Northern Neck
resided in State College, PA, where
Tom had a retail consultant business
while Marianne worked at Penn
State University. They have two
married children and three
grandchildren.
They are quite active at the
RFM. Tom and Marianne are both
docents. Marianne has helped out
on the Membership Committee, has
helped out during house tours, and
is a mainstay with the RFM Photo
Group. Tom works on the Claud
W. Somers and at the Boat Shop,
as well as at the Oyster Roast. He
currently serves as the RFM’s Vice
President.
Their philosophy on volunteering:
“Every member should
participate in some part of the
Museum. There’s room for
everyone! All you have to do is
show up and appear interested.
Someone will put you to work,
quickly! As much or as little as you
want.”
Education Committee
The Education Committee
will be hosting a wide variety of
guests in the next several months
including a joint effort with the
Claude Somers' Crew.
On June 29 th the Gifted
Program from Central Academy
Middle School will visit the museum
and have lunch on campus; they will
have traveled several hours to
reach us and we feel honored that
they want to learn more about the
RFM.
On July 13
8
th members will
work with children from Shiloh
Baptist Church Bible School both
on Campus and at their Church.
The activities will include learning
about Fish and other Critters that
live in the Bay. The Schlatters,
Rose and Joe are working on
some 'kits to go' making the chore
of taking our message to those
who can't travel to us easier.
During the week of July
20 th the Claude Somers' Crew and
the Ed. Com. will be working
together to help Northumberland
Family Y Campers learn more
about the RFM and its environs,
experience sailing first hand
aboard the Claude Somers.
Students will have an orientation
day to learn about safety aboard a
boat and to better understand the
fishing industry and its products as
well as honing in on mapping
skills. They will sail seeing and
hearing about the landmarks and
houses along the creek. They will
also be on land learning how to
row a boat, discovering the
fundamentals of knot tying and
digging into the water and mud to
learn about the critters of the Bay
We have a new
Office Assistant
I started working in the
museum office in April, sharing the
job with Karen. I retired from the
Smithsonian Institution in 1999,
having worked there for twenty-four
years. Prior to starting at the
Smithsonian I spent a little over six
years in the Air Force, where I met
my husband Ted.
Ted and I bought our house
in Reedville in 2004 and moved
here permanently in September of
2005. Originally from Seattle
Washington, I always wanted to get
back to the water. We both love it
here. When not working at the
museum I'm volunteering for the
Northumberland Family YMCA and
am now on their Board.
Workshop
Our Model Shop experts pass on
their skills. This workshop will be
held 10 AM until 2 PM daily with
30 minutes off for lunch. The
children should bring their own
lunch. The minimum age for the
class is 10 years old. There is only
room for six children and we expect
to have four return students. If you
are interested, an early signup is
suggested. The cost is $50. Please
call the office (804-453-6517) to
sign up.
Sixth Annual Antique &
Classic Boat Show &
Nautical Flea/Yard Sale
Market
Registrations are already
being made for the Cockrell’s Creek
gathering sponsored by the Museum
and the Tidewater Chapter of the
Antique and Classic Boat Society.
We will be asking dock owners on
Main Street to host boats for the
weekend. Boats are asked to arrive
Friday afternoon, September11 th
and leave Sunday morning,
September 13 th .
9
The day for visitors to
see the entire show is
Saturday, September 12 th . The
Antique Boat Parade will be 3:00
p.m. Kayaks and other small crafts
are invited to launch at the Museum
to view the show boats from the
creek. Smith Point Sea Rescue will
operate a water taxi from 10 AM to
3:30 PM The event promises to be
another great visual display. A “Pier
Pass” for the entire show (plus RFM
admission) is $5 and children 12
and under are free when
accompanied by a parent. Please
contact Clif Ames at 804-453-3506
or by
email for registration or
questions on the boat gathering.
The Nautical Flea
Market/Yard Sale will be 9 to 5
Saturday, September 12 th . We have
already received applications for
spaces. We love these early birds!
And this bodes well for a
monumental turnout. Flea market
spaces are $25 each. Don’t take
too literally the word “nautical”, just
clean out your closet, garage,
ß∑basement as well as office and
bring your “stuff”. The process may
well make you a local hero around
your house. This sort of thing has
been known to enhance marriages,
bring children home for a visit and
increase property values.
Remember, 9 to 5 on Sep 12 th .
Come on down, have fun and make
money! Contact Maureen Gillmer
for a reservation at 804-453-3004,
or by email .
The Starry Banner is published
quarterly and mailed to those
members without email addresses.
Notification is made by E-Newsletter
when it is posted on our web site.
Please make sure we have both
your current postal and email
addresses.
