PRESIDENTS REPORT
The season 2008/2009 was an extremely eventful year both on and off the field. James Hopes cemented his
place in the Australian One Day Team with consistent performances throughout the summer.
Ex North’s players Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Hauritz played Test Cricket for Australia. Brendan Nash was
selected to make his debut for the West Indies and former Wilston Norths Junior and Norths Player Alex
Cusack was selected to play 3 unofficial Tests for Ireland.
Clinton Perrin, Chris Hartley, James Hopes and Wade Townsend were in the Qld Bulls squad. During the
season Clinton Perren played his 100 th One Day Game for the Qld Bulls.
Ben Dunk and Wade Townsend were selected to play for the QAS team.
Michael Strange was selected in the Qld Imparja Team and Michael Mainhardt was named Coach and Ben
Mainhardt was selected to play in the Imparja Team that will be going to England later this year.
Cameron Balcomb and Tim Gregory were selected in the Qld Under 17s.
I congratulate Club Coaches Brett Mortimer, Michael Mainhardt and
Steven Rowe on the job they have done with our Players Development. It would be remiss of me not to make
special mention of the contribution of our outgoing Club Coach Brett Mortimer. Brett’s worked tirelessly as our
Club Coach and we are grateful for his input to Norths.
Congratulations to Glen Netto and the 5 th Grade Team for winning the
Premiership and I thank all of the Captains for their efforts during the year.
Off the field the Club now has a chance for a fresh beginning with Shawsportz going into Voluntary
Administration and the Brisbane City Council taking back the lease of the Shaw Road complex. This is the
start of an exciting time for Norths as we move forwards, looking to the future.
More people are required to assist in providing the type of governance,
facilities and training for our Club so Norths can continue its wonderful
record of producing 1 st Class Cricketers.
Thank you to all the people who helped out and ran the pre-season projects of repairing the Training Net
Facility, the Ian Healy Oval Fence and sightscreens. A significant cash input was provided by Wilston Norths
into the Training Complex and I thank them for that. Hopefully we are not too far off having all the Junior Club
calling the Shaw Road complex home.
I am pleased to say that the affiliation with Wilston Norths Juniors is getting stronger and stronger and I
commend their Secretary Glyn Netto and fellow Committee Members for providing some very good input into
the discussions at our Club meeting.
Thanks to our Groundsman, Jason Keene for his work during the season and Greg Pyne for his continued
support to Jason.
I would like to thank Vice–President Alan Scott, Secretary Bill Keene, Treasurer Glen Netto and the rest of the
Committee and our Statistician and web guru Lorix Bertling who have all made contributions to the Club this
year. Thanks Everyone.
I would like to say a special thank you to Bill Hopes for gathering all the documentation for the Club to show the
Voluntary Administrator for
Shawsportz Ltd. Over the 7 years that Shawsportz was in control of the site Norths put in to the cricket facility
over $500,000. Bill was able to find and collate all these invoices etc into a workable document for us to take on
the Administrator and negotiate an acceptable outcome for Norths.
Bill is currently working on updating North’s Strategic Plan. Whenever something needs to be done Bill is never
too far away and his professional expertise has been extremely appreciated by me.
Thanks to Glenys Smith for running the canteen for the Club.
Thanks to Roger Harris the 1 st Grade Manager for his continued support.
On behalf of all the Players I would like to thank the Supporters who give up their time and score each week.
Scoring is a thankless job in cricket and the Players do realise this. Thank you
Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 6

NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
The Club would like to thank Qld Cricket for all their support. I would especially like to thank them for the
financial assistance Grade Clubs receive throughout year. It is very much appreciated and needed.
The Club would also like to thank the Brisbane City Council for their support during the extremely stressful
period when Shawsportz went into Voluntary Administration.
I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that I will not be seeking to stay on as President next year. I have
thoroughly enjoyed the experience and privilege to be President of this Club and take this opportunity to thank
everyone who has been on the Committee or helped out around the Club during this time. After doing this for a
few years I have gained even more of an appreciation and respect for Roger and “Horse” Pascoe who have
been around the Club providing assistance and support for over 50 years.
THANK YOU
Robert Webster
President/Chairman
REPORTS (from Captains, Managers and Coaches)
FIRST GRADE
We can look back on our 2008/09 season with quite a bit of disappointment. Regardless of our position on the
ladder at the end of the season, what we failed to do was gradually improve and learn from our mistakes as the
season progressed. And it's with this in mind that I look forward already to next season. We had lost some
valuable players throughout the off season which is always a disruption, but that also provided opportunities for
a number of players to get some first grade experience under their belt.
As always, our batting is as impressive as any other side on paper. Stephen Nottle again led from the front with
his openly aggressive and positive attitude to setting up our innings. Wade Townsend again showed his
willingness to learn and improve and thus earning a birth for the Bulls in the T20 competition. He is a thinking
cricketer who is always looking at his own game as well as trying to improve others around him. Ben Dunk has
also put his hand up as contender for higher honours. His debut 1st grade century against University was both
classy and powerful, and with other valuable knocks as well as his ever improving glovework this season, he is
definitely putting his hand up as a future leader of the club.
It's no secret that our bowling stocks have been tested this season. Matt Jensen and Adam Lavis both led our
attack with willingness and enthusiasm. Both bowlers are sure to improve leading into next season and as
they begin to understand their own games more, they are setting a high standard and work ethic that should
flow down through the lower grades. Together with Cameron Balcomb who at only 15 years of age, played his
first full season of 1st grade, we are beginning to see the foundation for a consistent and long serving bowling
attack for Norths.
In closing, I think it's important to mention that we as a team and a club are in charge of our own destiny. We
alone as players are responsible for improving our own games and putting pressure on those players at the
level above us. Through consistent performances from everyone we can create a competitive and successful
atmosphere at Norths and set the example for the rest of the grade competition. That's starts by instilling the
pride back in that Northies cap. See you all next season!
Clinton Perren
ALAN PETTIGREW SHIELD (SEC0ND GRADE)
Hello and welcome to what is the 2 nd Grade Captain’s report for 2008/2009. I particularly don’t want to write this
and you particularly don’t want to read this, so let’s get on with the show.
The year started off poorly with three straight losses, but after that shaky start we put on some very good
victories and showed tremendous team spirit that saw us in the top four with one game to go in the season. We
travelled to the Gold Coast where a win would guarantee us a spot in the finals and where a loss (with such a
close competition table) would see us slip well out of the four and out of the finals. Unfortunately there was to be
no party on the coast, as we were totally outplayed on this occasion.
Highlights of the season include Andrew Michael’s continued development as a cricketer. Andy is an immensely
talented cricketer, who by his own admissions had a lean year last season, but this season he came back with a
vengeance. He single handedly won us games and also kept us in games this season with some outstanding
batsmanship and his now “yip free” bowling which also proved worthy. A change of diet to sushi and fruit &
vegetables helped contribute to his success.
Finlay “Mal” Lester was our bowling mainstay this season. His bowling style is similar to our club legend Nathan
Hauritz not using changes of pace, flight and guile to create headaches for batsman, but also turn which some
off spinners have found difficult to attain at Ian Healy Oval.
Throughout the year Kieran Ashby, Dom Michael, Greg Maher, Wally Wright and not to forget Andrew Murphy
(who travelled from Toowoomba every weekend) all contributed strongly.
Taylor Browne and Michael Wright shared the glove work with both doing solid jobs behind the sticks. It was a
close battle for Taylor, with catches and rashes an even tally.
This season also saw a few debutants from our Under 19 ranks with Tim Gregory, Elliott Gregg and Tom
O’Malley all having game time this season. It is great to see the depth and talent of the club. However it was not
just the debutants that we welcomed, but the return of Greg Chiesa whose knowledge, directness and fine rum
tasting pallet was welcomed back into the fold.
A season can’t be played without the tireless efforts of the off field staff and supporters. Firstly, Basil Wright for
taking such good care of the scorebook. Secondly, to Michael “Ducko” Mainhardt who in his first year of
Chairman of Selectors, did an especially good job of an especially difficult task. Picking one team is hard
enough but picking all of them is especially tough – well done mate. Finally, to Club Coach Brett Mortimer, who
has coached us all throughout his tenure at the club a massive thank you personally and as a team group who
have all benefited from your contributions to the club. Brett has worked tirelessly for the club in many differing
roles not just coaching, whether it be player recruitment, player retention, transport, advice or even employment
he has been at the forefront of many of our personal and cricketing development. So thank you mate, you will
be sorely missed.
In summing up, we had a solid year without being outstanding and a special mention to Andy Michael, Greg
Maher and Greg Chiesa who all filled in as captain at various stages throughout the year in my absence, so
thank you boys.
Jordan Buckley (Leader amongst men)
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
NORM MCMAHON SHIELD (THIRD GRADE)
The 2008/2009 season saw Norths finish mid-table, essentially one win outside of the top four. Considering the
number of close games lost by the side, this seemed to be a fair indication of the team’s standing in this
competition.
There were few highlights in the season. One hundred was scored and only one player had what could be
considered as a consistent year. Andrew McIntosh was very good with the ball throughout the season,
capturing over 30 wickets once again. His batting was also very useful in the lower order. Ben Mainhardt took
10 wickets in the last game of the season. This was a wonderful achievement even taking into account the poor
state of the wicket and the very bowler friendly conditions. This certainly turned Ben’s season around. Well
done Ben.
I would like to thank the contributions of Brett Mortimer (Coach), Duck (Chairman of Selectors…thankless task),
Jason Keene (Groundsman) and Bill Keene. Basil Wright’s scoring after Christmas was much appreciated by
the players and the skipper who now could enter balanced scores onto the computer.
Finally, I would also praise the efforts of the Fifth Grade side in victory. It was great to watch a young side beat
more fancied rivals in two finals. It was great to see young players (and Glen) enjoy the game and be satisfied
with just playing in the moment. Well done guys.
Jon Hopes
BOB SPENCE SHIELD (FOURTH GRADE)
The 2008/2009 season, in terms of match results and individual performances, was mixed. At times we played
as well, if not better, than any other team in the competition. However, at others we failed to perform anywhere
near our potential and wasted the considerable talent in our ranks. In aggregate we prevailed in three matches,
lost five and drew three; finishing seventh on the ladder. This season’s Bob Spence shield was very evenly
contested and as such, despite our relatively few wins, we were, up until the final round, a real chance of
breaking into the top four. Upon reflection at the end of the season it is apparent that a sloppy session in the
field here or a short period of careless batting there may have made all the difference when it came to our
overall ladder result. But rather than dwell on what might have been it is important that as both a team and as
individuals we learn from these failings and improve as cricketers.
The season began extremely well with us winning three from the first four matches. We were greatly aided in
these early games by the talents of certain players who later in the season went on to play in the higher grades.
In retrospect it is apparent that our early success led to a pattern of complacency developing, especially
amongst the batting group, which manifested itself in a lack of application and the perennial batsman’s bane of
not capitalising on making promising starts.
There were however some promising efforts throughout the season with the bat. Michael Strange (299 runs @
37.4) was the leading run scorer for the season and played exceptionally well on a number of occasions -
clearly demonstrating his potential to play in the higher grades in the near future. Tom O’Malley (211 @ 42.2) is
also deserved of mention. Whilst only playing four games he was amongst the highest run scorers for the
season and was justly rewarded for his fine batting performances by promotion up the grades after the
Christmas break. It would be remiss to fail to mention Tom Whittle’s (229 @ 38.16) batting performance this
year. Most notable was his unbeaten 73 in the final game against Western Suburbs, the eventual premiers, in
which he dominated a very strong bowling attack. Wally Wright and Scott Devine both scored hundreds in their
solitary appearances this year.
In terms of bowling Jake Wilkinson (13 wickets @ 16.4) topped the statistics. I have no doubt he would have
taken many more but for ill health in the later part of the season. So to would have Luke Hutton whose season
was cut short by injury. Luke’s spell of 4/55 from 20 overs against Redlands, the eventual runners-up was, in
my estimation, the finest bowling performance this season. Incidentally, Luke’s efforts coincided with what I
consider to be our best all-around performance of the year, even though Redlands managed to scrape a draw
with one wicket in hand at the end of two days play. It was gratifying to thoroughly out play a team which were
only a few weeks later to play in the final but at the same time frustrating as our performance in that game
demonstrated that if we were more consistent throughout the year our end of season result may have been very
different.
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
On a personal note, I would like to thank all those who played in the fours this year. Your good humour and
friendship made it a pleasure to captain the side. I would also like to thank the non-playing members of the club
whose hard work behind the scenes makes play possible. It is important that as players we recognise the efforts
of these men and women and take it upon ourselves to become more involved in the operation of the club and
take our share of the collective burden.
Congratulations must also go to Glenn Netto and his fifth grade team on their premiership victory.
ROY TANNER SHIELD (FIFTH GRADE)
The 2008-2009 Season proved to be the best season that I have ever been involved in. For this team to work
together and achieve the Grand Final Victory will be one of my most cherished memories on a cricket field.
The average player age this season was just under 20 and even with such a young side, we finished with an
overall record of 8 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses from 13 games (including 2 finals). We had consistent
performances throughout the season, with players being promoted up to 4 th Grade and then returning to
perform again in the Finals.
This year’s results were was even more impressive given that we only had only 4 players returning from our
losing semi-final team from last season. From last year’s team, players either were promoted up the grades, left
the club or left the game.
Our batting was lead by Joe Campbell (including 93 vs Sandgate-Redcliffe – SF), yours truly (111 not out
versus Toombul – Rd 4), Kelsey Osborne (94 vs Toombul – GF), Rohan Pyne (68 vs Sandgate-Redcliffe – Rd
3), Matt Smith (61 and 65 vs Toombul – GF) and Jayvan Ruddick-Collins (89 vs University – Rd 6).
Rohan and Jayvan were new recruits to the Club and both performed well throughout the year. Joe and Matt
have several years of experience in the Senior Grades and again showed their ability with the bat, when it
mattered most. Kelsey played in his 1 st year of Seniors Cricket and showed us what he is capable of in the
Finals. While I have been around for 20 seasons and was happy to contribute at different times during the
season.
Other Batsmen that performed admirably during the season include Dean West, Trent Balcomb, Brad Weston,
James Peacock and Kerrod Lavis.
Our bowling was lead by Alex Kurth (including Match Figures of 8 – 69 vs Sandgate-Redcliffe – Rd 3 and 5-18
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
Alex is a young left arm Chinaman Bowler in his 1 st year of Senior Cricket. His results were great and he has a
great control and variety of deliveries. James was our “Pommy Import” and once he got used to the Kookaburra
Ball, he was a constant threat to the opposition batsman. Nathan and Kerrod shared the new ball throughout
the year and were always able to get the early breakthrough required. While Kelsey also chipped in with his
handy medium pacers.
Other Bowlers that performed admirably during the season include Gav Baker, Matt Smith, Dale Shatte, Mick
Cane, Trent Balcomb, Tom Adams, Scott Aspinall and Josh McClelland.
Our Fielding was lead by our Wicket Keepers, including yours truly (19 catches & 2 stumpings), and Dean Bilton
(7 catches). Our other fieldsmen that performed were Alex Kurth (11 catches), James Peacock (6 catches), Joe
Campbell and Trent Balcomb (5 catches each).
Our performances and consistency throughout the year saw us always being in “Finals” contention and in the
end of the regular season we finished 3 rd .
Semi Final vs Sandgate-Redcliffe
The SF saw us play Sandgate-Redcliffe at Albury Oval. We won the toss and elected to bat.
After the early loss of Dean, Kelsey and Rohan got us to 56 before Kelsey was out caught behind for 27. Gav
joined Rohan and the score continued on 75 for Rohan was caught for 43. Our next two dismissals were
questionable (as Gav did not hit the ball and was given out caught behind and Smithy is never out when hit on
the pads).
At 5 for 104, I joined Joe in the middle and we put on 33 before a loose slog (which is the best why I could
describe it), saw my wicket fall. Tom and Joe then put on another 33, when Tom played and missed a ball
outside his off stump. The umpire thought otherwise and instead he was given also out caught behind.
At 7 for 170, Kerrod came to the wicket and combined with Joey for another 44 runs (at nearly a run a ball).
Kerrod was dismissed for a handy 21 runs. At this stage Joe had made his way to a well compiled 84 and he
looked capable of reaching the triple figures. He contributed another 9 runs to his score, when he was
eventually dismissed for a great 93.
Nathan and Alex held out Sandgate-Redcliffe for another 2 overs, but no runs (bad luck Wardy – you were
looking solid). And we were finally all out for 232. This was a great effort, considering that we were 5 for 104
earlier on in the day. At the end of Day 1, we had the runs on the board and we had the opportunity to defend
our total and win the match.
Day 2 started and we had the job ahead of us. The first wicket saw Nathan find the outside edge from one of
their openers that flew to Gav and we had them 1 for 21. The next wicket was a great bouncer by Kerrod, which
would have either cleaned up the batsman or claim his wicket. Luckily it was the later and the ball lobbed up
and was caught by yours truly. Sandgate-Redcliffe was reeling at 2 for 25 and we had to continue our efforts to
stay on top.
Despite some very tight bowling by Kerrod, Nathan and Gav we couldn’t make the break through and an
unfortunately a dropped catch off their best batsman on 20 odd (thanks Kelsey), caused our heads to drop.
At the second drinks break, some soul searching saw our fortunes turn around. Alex picked up 2 pick wickets
with a good caught and bowled and a stumping. With Sandgate-Redcliffe 4 for 129, our job was far from done.
We worked hard for our next wicket with the score on 162, to a smart catch by Rohan, off the bowling of Matt.
With the wicket of their best batsman (who should be playing higher than 5 th grade), we knew that we had a
chance and the momentum was turning our way.
More great bowling by Gav and Matt saw us wrap up their tail for the loss of another 20 runs. To get the last six
wickets for 20 runs was a magnificent effort and we fought hard to come back from a bad situation and win on
first innings.
Our bowling was lead by Gav and Matt who both finished with 3 for 12. Alex picked up 2 wickets, while Kerrod
and Nathan also took 1 wicket each.
With approximately 20 odds overs left in the day the Sandgate-Redcliffe Captain made the decision to send us
back in. Within the next 10 minutes he came to his senses and congratulated the team on our win.
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
We celebrated the victory with the Club song and we complimented the players who produced in the game and
lead us to victory. I spoke to the guys about the challenge ahead in the Grand Final, and confirmed that a
constant effort over the next 4 days of cricket would be needed to take out the next game.
Grand Final vs Toombul
The GF saw us take on the Minor Premiers Toombul at Ken Mackay Oval.
We again won the toss (2 for 2 in the finals, thank you) and we elected to bat. Our focus was to value our
wicket, bat in partnerships and ensure that we had wickets in hand at the end of the day.
A good start saw Kelsey and Jayvan putting on 63. Rohan and Kelsey continued on until Rohan was dismissed
with the score at 94. This saw Gav (our 6 th Grade recruit) joining Kelsey and these two put on another 85 runs
before Kelsey was out, with the score on 179.
Kelsey compiled a classy innings of 94 (he deserved the triple figures, however it was not to be). This was
Kelsey’s highest score of the season and it couldn’t have come at a better time. His effort to bat almost the
whole day against a hostile bowling attack (and even more hostile supporters) was a testament to his
performance. Gav was also dismissed with the score on 179, after a solid 30 (did someone mention bad light).
At the end of day one, we finished at a very respectable 4 for 179.
Day 2 saw Joe and Matt continue at the crease. With the score moving on to 214, when Joe was dismissed.
Another 10 runs to the score were added by Matt and myself, before I edged one behind. This dismissal
brought Trent and Matt together. These two batsmen added a great 91 run partnership. Matt was dismissed for
well made 61. Trent continued on with the remaining batsman and was eventually out caught after scoring 64.
Again these two scores were seasons best for Matt and Trent. After this Kerrod and Nathan were dismissed
and the team scored a magnificent 339.
This total was achieved a great batting performance and given the encouragement and game plan from Morto,
we were able to have 3 partnerships of 50 runs or more.
With 30 odd overs left on Day 2, our bowlers looked to make some inroads into the Toombul batting line-up. An
early strike by Kerrod saw Toombul at 1 for 19. Then a great spell of bowling by both Trent – 6 overs, 3
maidens and 3 runs (Trent was unlucky not to get at least one wicket, when the batsmen hit one behind to me)
and Gav – 9 overs, 2 maidens and 11 runs, slowed Toombul down. We brought on Alex and he picked up the
wicket of their captain in his first over. This wicket had them at 2 for 25 after 18 overs. Continued pressure saw
Alex claiming the 3 rd wicket with the score on 40. At the end of Day 2, Toombul were 3 for 64. Kerrod had 1 for
15 and Alex had 2 for 20.
Day 3 arrived and we had the job of knocking over Toombul, as quickly and as cheaply as possible. We knew
that they would back themselves to pass our score, however if we bowled good areas and fielded well - I was
confident that we could get the best of the day.
A stubborn partnership of 45 was broken by Gav, when he got an edge behind. He also picked up another
wicket in his following over and Toombul were suddenly 5 for 86. The new batsmen put runs on and our next
dismissal was courtesy of a juggling effort by Dean off the bowling of Nathan. The next pair combined for a
partnership of 68 (thanks to a life given by a lazy effort by the Norths’ Keeper – we won’t mention any names
here and due to the fact that the batsman had a runner, otherwise he would have struggled). Matt’s off spinners
did the trick and we then had Toombul 7 for 193. Leading up to the new ball we also brought back Alex and
together with a classic catch by Nathan we had them 8 for 199.
The new ball was taken and the batsmen must have appreciated the hard ball as it was disappearing to all parts
of the ground. A rapid partnership of 46 was halted by a skyer which was caught by Alex off Gav’s bowling. With
only one wicket to go we refocused and due to a great fielding effort by Rohan, we got the 10 th and final wicket
with a run-out.
We eventually dismissed Toombul for 283 and had an overall lead of 56 runs. Our bowling was lead by Alex 3
for 56 and Gav 3 for 70. While we did bowl as planned, our fielding efforts at times let us down and we could
have and should have dismissed Toombul for a lower score.
We had 17 overs remaining in the day, and with Toombul having nothing to lose and everything to gain,
Toombul came back at us – hard.
Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club - 12

NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
Unfortunately after 6 overs, we crashed to the score of 3 for 10. The Toombul side and Natives (in mean
Toombul supporters) were unrelenting and thought they were back on top again. However a gritty and unbroken
partnership of 38 by Joe and Rohan saw us resurrect our innings and finish the third day on 3 for 48.
Day 4 was upon us and we planned to start solidly and bat out the day, which in turn would close out the game
for Norths and not give Toombul a look in.
Again Toombul didn’t follow the script and after 4 overs, we had lost another 3 wickets for 8 runs. We were
precariously placed at 6 for 56, leaving us with an overall lead of just 112, with approximately another 76 overs
left in the day.
What happened next is something that I am very proud of. A partnership of 97 runs off 39 overs by Matt and
myself, went a very long way to reclaim the Premiership and Matt was dismissed for a well compiled 65. Both of
Matt’s innings in the Grand Final showed us what he is capable of and I hope that he continues on with these
types of performances again next season.
After Matt’s dismissal, Kerrod joined me at the crease and the equation now showed that we lead by 209 runs,
with approximately 35 overs to go in the day. The next partnership of 29 runs off 15 overs again increased our
lead and wore into the overs remaining in the day. I was eventually dismissed for a very patient 40 runs.
This gave us an overall lead of 238 runs, with approximately 23 overs remaining. Toombul probably thought that
they would wrap the tail up quickly and have a chance to chase down our lead; however Kerrod and Alex had
other ideas and combined for a 48 run stand. When Kerrod was finally dismissed for 42, the score was 9 for
230.
Nathan joined Alex and contributed 2 runs to the total. Eventually we were all out for 234. Alex finished with a
very handy 21 not out.
This left Toombul to score 291 runs to win off the remaining 8 overs (at only a run rate of 36.375 per over). For
some reason they came out to bat again and they eventually called stumps at 3 for 54 in the fifth over. With this,
the match was over and the Premiership was ours.
We again celebrated the victory with the Club song and we asked our supporters join us in the celebration.
The cumulate effort over the 4 days of cricket lead us to the victory and all players within the team put their
hands up and contributed at different times. I am very proud to lead this group of cricketers, who I would
consider a “Champion Team”.
This season far exceeded my expectations, and I am grateful for all the players that represented us and
performed throughout the year.
I would also like to highlight the efforts of some players who did not play in the Grand Final; however were
integral parts of the team throughout the year - these players are Tom Adams, James Peacock and Scott
Aspinall.
Our on field performance would not be possible without the support of those off the field; including our Coach -
Brett Mortimer and our Chairman of Selectors - Michael Mainhardt. I would also be remised not to thank the
efforts of the Executive Committee who got us through the season, post Shawsportz. The executive was lead
by President Robbie Webster and he was ably supported the efforts of such people as Bill Keene, Bill Hopes
and Glen Carey. I would also like to pay a compliment to our Groundsman – Jason Keene, as we always have
a great wicket and field to play on. Jason was assisted by Greg Pyne, who offered his experience and
expertise.
Looking forward to defending the Premiership in 2009-2010.
W E P HARRIS SHIELD (SIXTH GRADE)
A mixed season was had by 6th grade which can be expected when you combine a youthful team with frequent
changes to the side each game. Consequently it was difficult to produce consistent performances. That said,
our season had some great individual and team performances. When our team was at nearly full strength we
were able to beat the eventual ladder leaders quite convincingly. Every team we came up against throughout
the season commented on how young our side was and with a bit of luck with the weather (rain cost us two
wins - one of which would have been an outright) we may even have been able to make the finals. As it was, we
came a commendable 9th which was only one game outside of the top 4.
Our young guns provided some great enthusiasm in the field and generally our catching was excellent
throughout the year. There was only one match that I can think of where a couple of dropped chances cost us
the game and all year our ground fielding was of an excellent standard compared to the opposition teams. Our
bowling was generally quite a high standard, too good for many of the batsmen we came up against, however it
was our lack of commitment and sometimes skill with the bat that let us down consistently each game. We
could never quite put enough runs on the board to take advantage of our opposition which is a bit disappointing,
especially as we had the firepower with the ball.
While myself and Gavin were the "old" timers of the team, we did manage to hold our own (486 runs and 46
wickets between us), and I think many of the boys have improved their cricket knowledge as a result of playing
with some experienced players. Some of the individual performances were worth noting - firstly Gavin Baker
with 258 runs and 28 wickets was outstanding all year. But some of the young kids - Marcus Daldy (146 runs
and 19 wickets in 6 games), Grantley Hodgins (197 runs and 16 wickets in 8 games) and the irrepressible
Robin "Sarwin" Darwin (13 catches) were all consistent performers.
It was very enjoyable to captain this group and play for this club.
Yours in cricket,
Mark Daldy
LORD TAVERNER’S COMPETITION (UNDER 17)
The Lord Taverners competition for the second year was run as an U/17 competition consisting of five rounds.
This again was a change for our club as previously as an U/16 competition we would blood some of our future
grade players in a tough competition. Having these changes to deal with it proved a very good season for our
young Lord Taverners team in 2008/2009.
With one win, one loss, and three draws, against other sides which were genuine teams of U/17 players this is
a most pleasing effort as most of this year’s squad were U/15. We had a couple of U/16s and some U/14s in the
squad. This stands the future of NSDCC in good shape as we have some very promising youngsters coming
through. The team finished in third place overall only .25 points out of second place. A win in the last round
would have seen the premiership go to us, this is how close it was to the end of the season. This was a very
pleasing result for such a young side trying to adapt to cricket in the longer version as some of them were still
involved in junior cricket. The most pleasing thing was that on most occasions we were able to bat for the whole
day, something these youngsters are not used to doing. A lesson could be learnt for all in this regard.
Some excellent performances from a very good year were :
Cameron Grigg had a very solid season for club & in representative teams for Brisbane North. He was named
most outstanding U/17 cricketer at the annual awards night.
Three innings: 161 runs @ 53.66. 37 overs 9 wickets @ 15.22
Marcus Daldy also performed very well in this competition with both bat and ball, as he is only U/14 a bright
future ahead for him.
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
Joel Bock one of our country / interstate players from Northern Territory also had a very good year in this team.
Other solid performers and future grade players for us were: Liam Grienke, Trent Balcomb, Dean Bilton and
Joeseph McKillop.
We used over twenty players this season in a rotational system to expose as many of our quality youngsters to
higher level cricket as possible. All of our squad gained valuable experience from being a part of the whole
Taverners experience. I am sure all of them were very glad to be involved, and look forward to a long career
with NSDCC.
In summing up I would like to thank all of our parent group, who were very supportive of both the boys and club
in general, with help in the canteen and scoring on match days. NSDCC is very appreciative of your efforts and
as a club we thank you all very much.
Thanks to Michael ( Duck )Mainhardt for his efforts both on and off the field as myself and the boys appreciate
it very much.
WOMEN’S 2 ND GRADE SHIELD
After a poor season last year, this year was shaping up rather similar after a bad loss to South's in round one
and a flogging from Beenleigh in round two. Round three however proved us wrong, and thus begun an exciting
season for all.
Round three began with North’s batting first. With scores in the 30’s from Courtney, Gayle and Lisa with
Michelle not far behind, a total of 4/192 against Uni was very surprising. We then proceeded to bowl them over
for 117, with Courtney posting 4/14 off 4.1 overs, Cassie M with 2/19 off 4 and 1/9 off 3 overs for Gayle. This
game also highlighted some brilliant fielding with 2 fantastic run-outs.
The highlight of round four was restricting West’s to 70 off 24 overs due to the outstanding bowling
performances from Megan R who took 3/5 off 3 overs including two maidens, Gayle M with 2/8 off 3 and Vicky
B with 2/7 off 3. While later on Amanda scored her highest score of 39, we reached the target in 18 overs.
Round 6 standouts were Courtney with a score of 34 from our score of 8/100 and Lisa T bowled 4/10 off 5 overs
along with Keely F with 2/4 off 4, to bowl South’s out for 74.
Unfortunately the next round against Beenleigh was again unsuccessful.
After a wet start and rain delays to the first innings of round 8, Uni were bowled out for 72, with every bowler
contributing. Jeanette opened the batting in her return and solitary appearance this season and helped
Courtney and Amanda as the only batters to reach the Uni total in 16 overs.
First innings, round eight, North’s batting looked promising until a collapse looked imminent. Thankfully a lower
order partnership between Anna B and Anne-Maree R kept us going until our overs were faced out. Bowling
triumphs were again shared by all restricting West’s to 109.
The next game verse Uni was again a walk-over bowling them out for 29. Young guns Christina C and Abbigale
G opened the batting and didn’t require any help from the rest of the team reaching the total in just eight overs.
Unfortunately this form couldn’t continue through to the next round against Beenleigh.
Heading towards the end of the season, came a fight for runners up between our selves and South’s. Thus
came a tight game that came down to the last over. Thankfully, North’s managed to chase a total of 101 with an
outstanding batting performance from Michelle with 37 not out.
Along with a last round win against West’s came more season personal bests. Lisa T made a quick fire 56 from
44 balls to take us to 132. Amanda had an outstanding game with the ball taking 4 for 10 off five overs while
Lisa also took 3 spectacular catches to bypass Courtney’s club record.
After a season this successful we went into the finals against Beenleigh, unfortunately we didn’t manage a win
NSDCC - Annual Report 2008-2009
Overall it was a great season. It was fantastic to see most of the girls return after last season and improve
immensely. If the girls hadn’t worked so well together and had as much fun this result would not have been
possible. Some of the most improved players throughout the season were Rowdy (Anna) with her keeping, Afro
(Annie) all round and Megs with her bowling.
Well Done Girls, can’t wait until next season.
