6TH EDITION OF
Nalco Foundation Day Lecture
On the eve of 27 th Foundation Day of the Company,
Nalconians played host to Dr. Jamshed J. Irani, Director,
Tata Group of Industries, who delivered the Nalco
Foundation Day Lecture on January 6 in the Nalco Bhavan
Auditorium at Bhubaneswar. It was the 6 th edition of the
Lecture Series. The previous five speakers were: Dr. A.P.J.
Abdul Kalam (2002), Dr. Sam Pitroda (2003), Prof. Yash
Pal (2004), Dr. Abid Hussain (2005) and Gen. Shankar
Roychoudhury (2006).
Addressing a select gathering of bureaucrats, technocrats,
educationists, businessmen, mediapersons and
Nalconians on The Role of Industries in the Future
Development of India, Dr. Irani said that when
management and union get on well, one can circumvent
other negative factors. There is a need for a tripartite
agreement among industry, government and labour
Nalco is a thriving Industry – serving
the country’s requirement for a very
basic commodity. I wish it all success in
2007 and beyond.
Jamshed J. Irani
Director, Tata Group of Industries
unions, so as to achieve fast industrial development in
the country. Also, the government should not allow
political considerations or bureaucratic dilly-dallying to
come in the way of industrial development. As the Foreign
Direct Investments are flowing in, the government must
think in terms of bringing in the reforms, he emphasized.
Further, Dr. Irani pointed out that the service sector
contributed about 15 per cent to the country’s GDP,
while agriculture had a share of 30 per cent; so there is
ample space for industries to fill the vacuum in future.
He also called upon industrial houses to increase their
expenditures on R&D and to take up corporate social
responsibility in right earnest.
Shri Ajit Tripathy, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Orissa,
presided over the function. Shri C.R. Pradhan, CMD I/c,
Nalco, delivered the welcome address and Shri A. Ray,
Director (P&A), Nalco, proposed a vote of thanks.
Emerging issues before Nalco
(AS ENUMERATED BY SHRI C.R. PRADHAN, CMD I/c, ON THE 27TH FOUNDATION DAY OF THE COMPANY)
As members of Nalco collective, today we are all proud of the achievements of the Company. It is a great feeling to be a
leader and a winner in today’s intensely competitive business environment. However, if the advantages built over the last 26
years are to be effectively sustained and carried forward, we must do some hard thinking on the challenges unfolding before
us. We must plan for future. We must prioritize our actions to safeguard the interests of our Company.
Organizational Renewal
At 27, we may say Nalco is not very old. But the reality is that those who had joined the Company in the initial stage – and
they are in large numbers – have become seniors occupying various key positions in the organization and are about to retire.
In fact, in coming years, a large number of our colleagues will be leaving the Company on attaining the age of superannuation,
which would lead to significant loss of expertise, skill and knowledge to the Company.
The plants and machinery have also become old, so are some of the policies and procedures. At this crucial phase of Nalco,
what we need to do is to seriously review, revise and renew our human resources, structures, systems, procedures and
practices. We need to keep the organization dynamic. We need to reposition our Company to meet the challenges of
changing environment. We have to devise strategies to reassess our efficiencies in the fields of technologies, marketing,
materials and HR management.
Growth Challenges
As stated earlier, we are in the midst of a major expansion programme involving an investment of over Rs.4091 crore. We
have to generate our own funds for this ambitious project. We have to construct and commission the new facilities within the
time schedule and without any cost over-run. It is quite a big challenge. Unless we are able to mobilize our physical and
financial resources properly and create the right environment for speedy implementation of these projects, we will not be
able to achieve the desired results. Over the next 2-3 years, we have to remain extra alert to the needs and the logistics of
project management.
Work Culture
We are fortunate to have in our possession some of the finest technologies of mining, refining and smelting. We can go on
modernizing and improving on them. But what about our mindset, our work-related behaviour, our application to work Are
we geared up to make optimal use of all productive assets available with us It is seen in the cases of high-performing
organizations that people adopt behaviour pattern which are considered appropriate, healthy and productive. It brings
success and happiness to everybody. Perhaps, we may do some introspection to see whether we are on the right track or not.
Business Strategy
Our core competence lies in primary aluminium making. We have so far achieved good results by concentrating in this area.
Another area of our strength is bulk alumina export. The current expansion will see a quantum jump in the business volume
of these two products. Soon, Nalco will have annually about 10 lakh tonnes of alumina and 1.5 lakh tonnes of aluminium for
export. These are huge quantities. We need to redefine our business strategy – both in terms of domestic and export
marketing. Besides, we have to integrate our production and marketing processes, by focussing on quality improvement and
market optimization.
Cost Effectiveness
Our track record in profitability has been quite satisfactory, so also fiscal management, particularly with regard to liquidation
of overseas debts. But sometimes, continuous success and profitability blur our vision of many grey areas of wasteful
expenditures. We need to look at various means to become more cost effective. Our success in future will primarily depend
on our ability to produce more and spend less.
These are some of the areas that are going to be crucial for our survival, and success, in coming years. These are not difficult
tasks. These need little more attention and sincere effort on the part of each one of us. Let us make a beginning with new
enthusiasm and new vigour.
Swami Ramdev at Nalco Nagar, Bhubaneswar
Ramkishan Yadav, popularly known as Swami Ramdev, was born in Alipur,
Haryana. He attended school up to 8th Class in Shahjadpur. Thereafter,
he joined a yogic monastery (gurukul) in Khanpur village to study Sanskrit
and Yoga. Eventually, he renounced worldly life and entered into Sanyas
(monastic living) – with a new identity Swami Ramdev.
Subsequently, he went to Jind district and joined the Kalva gurukul, and
later imparted free Yoga training to villagers across Haryana. It is said that
he travelled the Himalayas for several years, before settling in Haridwar.
He discovered several medicinal plants in the Himalayas, which he uses
in treating his patients. Swami Ramdev started relentless efforts to
popularize Yoga in 1995 with the establishment of Divya Yoga Mandir
Trust, along with Acharya Karamveer and Acharya Balkrishna.
Swami Ramdev teaches Pranayam, which is a series of techniques for
breath control that were developed as a part of the ancient Indian system
of Yoga. Pranayam was often limited to advanced practitioners of Yoga
and undertaken only under the strict supervision of an experienced teacher.
Swamiji has worked diligently to break these barriers and help the practice
of Pranayam achievable by ordinary persons.
Swamiji has been conducting training camps in cities all over India.
Recently, he conducted one at Bhubaneswar. During his stay, he visited
Nalco Nagar on January 8 to address the Nalconians.
investments will be done on ‘other expansions’. Bauxite
Alcoa puts up a poor show in fourth quarter
posted a decline in its fourth-quarter profit. The result comes
on the back of lower production due to hurricanes, strikes
HRD
All of us know about the race between the tortoise and the hare.
The moral of the story was: Slow and steady wins the race.
But the story continued…
The hare was disappointed at losing the race and he did some
soul-searching. He realized that he had lost the race only
because he had been overconfident. So, he challenged the
tortoise to another race. The tortoise agreed. This time, the
hare ran without stopping, from start to finish. He won the race
by several metres. The moral of the story changed: Fast and
consistent will always beat the slow and steady.
But the story did not end there...
The tortoise did some thinking this time, and realized that
there is no way he can beat the hare in a race the way it was
formatted. He thought for a while, and then challenged the
hare to another race, but on a slightly different route. The hare
agreed. They started off. The hare took off and ran at top speed
until he came to a broad river. The finishing line was on the
other side of the river. The hare sat there wondering what to
do. In the meantime the tortoise trundled along, got into the
river, swam to the opposite bank and finished the race.
The moral of the story changed yet again: First identify your
core competency and then choose the playing field. Working
to your strengths will not only get you noticed, but will also
create opportunities for growth and advancement.
When Roberto Goizueta took over as
CEO of Coca-Cola in the 1980s, he
was faced with intense competition
from Pepsi that was eating into Coke’s
growth. His executives were Pepsifocused.
But, Roberto decided to stop
competing against Pepsi and instead
compete against the 0.1 per cent
growth of aerated drinks.
Roberto asked his executives what was
the average fluid intake of an American
per day The answer was 14 ounces.
What was Coke’s share of that Two
Power of Perception
The story still did not end…
The hare and the tortoise, by this time, had become pretty
good friends and they did some thinking together. Both realized
that the last race could have been run much better. So they
decided to do the last race again, but to run as a team this time.
They started off, and this time the hare carried the tortoise till
the riverbank. There, the tortoise took over and swam across
with the hare on his back. They reached the finishing line
together. They both felt a greater sense of satisfaction than they
had felt earlier. Finally, the moral of the story was: It is good to
be individually brilliant and to have strong core competencies;
but unless you are able to work in a team and harness each
other’s core competencies, you will always perform below par
because there will always be situations at which you will do
poorly and someone else does well.
To sum up, the changing story of the hare and tortoise teaches
us many things:
! Never give up when faced with failure.
! The fast and consistent will always beat the slow and
steady.
! Work to your competencies.
! Compete against the situation, not against a rival.
! Pooling resources and working as a team will always
beat individual performers.
ounces. Roberto said Coke needed a
larger share of that market. The
competition wasn’t Pepsi. It was water,
tea, coffee, milk and fruit juices that
went into the remaining 12 ounces.
The public should reach for a Coke
whenever they felt like drinking
something. To this end, Coke put up
vending machines at every street
corner. Sales took a quantum jump.
At times, a different viewpoint makes
all the difference. So, every problem
that one faces should be viewed from
different perspectives.
Proactive people take initiatives and
hold themselves responsible for their
own lives. They determine the
priorities of their lives and never mix
them up or misplace them. They live
life based on self-chosen values and
are guided by personal mission
statements. These people strive with
ultimate goal in mind.
Reactive people do not take
responsibility for their own lives. They
feel victimized, a product of
circumstances, their past, and other
people. These people live on day-today
basis, engaged in mundane chores.
They never act of their own, only react
to situations. They simply drift with no
goal in mind.

FOOTING THE BILL
HEALTH
Defective footwear is one of the most important factors, leading to foot-related ailments.
Women account for 80% of all foot problems – the main culprit being the high-heels.
Heels are notoriously uncomfortable, but most women are not aware of just how
dangerous these can be. Heels more than 2 inches high can not only damage a
woman’s posture and increase risk of falling, but can also cause permanent
damages. It is presumed that high-heels are style statements and
enhance personality presence – but at what cost
Osteoarthritis: High-heeled shoes cause the
feet to lose the ability to absorb the shock of
impact, which is transferred to the knee, a
common site of osteoarthritis among women.
DO YOU KNOW
Achilles Tendonitis: Occurs when the large
tendon that connects the calf muscles to the
heel bone becomes shortened. It then
becomes irritated and swells.
Muscle Tear: Lack of stability can
lead to sprains and muscle tears.
Callouses and Corns : Caused by
pressure and friction when the foot
presses against the inside of shoe or
when toes are pressed together. This
can lead to the formation of thick
hard areas of skin called corns.
Hammertoes: Occur when the
second toe buckles under itself to
relieve pressure. The toe buckle
then rubs against the inside of
shoe. With time, this causes the
toe to take on a claw-like
appearance and a hard corn
develops on top of the toe.
Stiletto heels transmit a large amount of
force in a small area, and are therefore often
strengthened by a metal rod, and a metal or
hard plastic tip. The great pressure
transmitted through such a heel is much
greater than that exerted by an elephant
standing on one foot.
TYPES OF HEELS
! Kitten heels
! Platform heels
! Sabrina heels
! Stacked heels
! Stiletto heels
! Wedge heels
Metatarsaigia: Inflammation
of bones near the
ball of the foot.
Neuromas: Are pinched
nerves near the ball of the
foot.
Ingrown Toenails: Tight
stockings can cause them,
when the edge of a toenail
grows into the surrounding
skin, causing swelling and
pain.
Bunions: Occur when the
big toe is forced inward,
and the joint is forced
outward, causing swelling,
pain and eventually bony
growth.
