Winter/Spring 2013 - Enriched For Life
(269) 323-6700
Dear Community Member,
Every January, people make resolutions to improve their life for the new year. The “Enriched for Life”
community education program would like to help you make these plans a reality.
Our local instructors have created a number of classes that let you ‘try out’ a new exercise regime
without the high cost of membership. Join a group to prepare for your first run this spring or get back
into the pool to perfect your stroke. Find a dance partner and learn to waltz or foxtrot as a way to get
in shape.
Or perhaps you are hoping to exercise your mind by trying a computer class, a realtor seminar or even
a World Language.
We offer many enrichment opportunities for children, too. Allow your child to explore art, sports,
dance or languages at an affordable rate this winter/spring.
We strive to be the best community education provider in the State. We offer a diverse selection of
classes that meet your needs. Help us to become even better by participating in our survey:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PPSEnrichedforLife2013.
You can share with us ideas for future classes or needs in our community. We hope to meet you in one
of our classes this year.
Sincerely,
Sarah R. Baker
Community Relations Manager
Cherie McMullin
Community Relations Coordinator
Note: Special Needs – All persons with developmental or physical disabilities are encouraged to
contact the program coordinator prior to enrollment in a program. We will attempt to address a request
for special needs by communicating with the participant and staff member directly responsible for the
program.
Fitness & Exercise
Busy Bodies
Busy Bodies is a safe and effective exercise program
offering a variety of classes to fit the individual’s
specific needs. Classes are designed to accommodate
the needs of exercisers of all ages, from beginners
through advanced.
All classes include choreographed aerobic dance,
body sculpting and stretching segments. The aerobic
dances contain original choreography each session.
The body sculpting contains resistance training,
Pilates, yoga, and weight training moves. Weights
and/or resistance bands may be added for an advanced
workout. Each session offers new routines and
music. Also included is a monthly newsletter full of
information on fitness, health tips, recipes and more.
Please bring a towel or mat for the floor work.
Registration for any two-day class includes unlimited
attendance at any Monday through Thursday class.
Classes are also available in Vicksburg. Call Sue
Haroldson at 323-6764 for more information or to
make arrangements to preview a class.
Busy Bodies-A
Busy Bodies-A puts the emphasis on “Aerobic”
movement. Aerobic exercise strengthens the
cardiovascular system, reduces body fat and helps
relieve stress. Choreographed dances keep you
moving during the initial 45-minute aerobic portion of
the class. Body sculpting exercises will complete the
hour. If you like to dance, give this class a chance.
Busy Bodies-B
Busy Bodies-B puts the emphasis on “Body
Sculpting.” A fit body is a body with strong and firm
muscles. The more muscle a body has, the more fat
that it will burn. This 45-minute class begins with
15 minutes of choreographed dance, followed by 30
minutes of body sculpting and stretching. This class
condenses the necessary fitness components into a
quick 45 minute workout. Time flies when you are
having fun AND getting fit!
This is our most popular class! This class combines
the most effective movements from Yoga and Pilates
(Core Conditioning) to give practitioners more rapid
Master Aquatic Club
LIFETIME FITNESS . . . This is the number one
priority of this program. We believe the Greater
Kalamazoo Area should offer adults the opportunity
to use lap swimming as a means of staying in superb
physical condition for a lifetime. NOTE: Participants
need not be an experienced swimmer to take part!
Swimming time is available Monday through Friday
from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m. at the West Middle School
beginning January 7. Fee is $5 per visit or you may
purchase a pass from the lifeguard on duty for $40 -
good for 10 visits. A participant may come as often or
as little as they wish. No pre-registration is necessary.
For more information, call the Portage Community
Education Center at 323-6700. (The pool will not be
open: Spring Recess - April 1-5; Memorial Day - May
27; and Independence Day-July 4.)
Portage Aquatic Club Masters
The philosophy of the Portage Aquatic Club
Swim team is to provide fun, fitness, and friendly
competition (if desired), in a positive environment of
athletic encouragement.
PAC Masters welcomes anyone, 19-years and older,
who wants to improve his/her swimming, regardless
of your previous swimming experience. (This is NOT
a learn to swim program.) Swimmers are assigned to
lanes with others of similar ability, and workouts are
adjusted according to the experience and ability of
swimmers in each lane. Our swimmers will come in
all age groups, and include:
• Former high school, college, or masters competitive
swimmers
• Experienced triathletes and open-water swimmers
• Entry-level triathletes
• Adult fitness swimmers with no previous swim
team experience
If you are just beginning to swim, or have been out
of the water for a long time, please check with the
coach for recommendations on the appropriate way
to get started. Please consult with your personal
Advanced Tai Chi
Sword - 32 Forms
Tai Chi Sword is one of the short weapons of Tai Chi
Quan and apparatus, showing styles of both Tai Chi
Quan and swordsmanship. It is characterized by a
relaxed body, a quiet mind, circular and continuous
movements, and combination of spirit, form, body
and apparatus. The swordsmanship is fine, smooth
and ingenious. It can beat the softness while avoiding
the hardness, which combines firmness and flexibility.
The 32-Form Tai Chi Sword is an advanced series
of established movements designed by International
Wushu (Chinese Martial Arts) Federation. It has
clarified techniques, simple structure, and original
and concise movements. As an integration of artistic
forms and skills of attack and defense, it is easy to
learn and practice. This course is designed to teach
students how to perform the 32-Form Tai Chi Sword.
Students should wear comfortable clothing and either
non-slip tennis shoes or plan to go barefoot. Be sure to
bring a yardstick or a wrapping paper roll (30 inches
P90X
The famous P90X workout is at West Hills! Now you can do Tony Horton’s body and life changing workouts at
the gym with a personal trainer! The one con clients had of P90X was always that “it was a home based workout.
They didn’t have the accountability and expertise of a trainer, or the social aspect of the gym.” Well now you can
have the best of both worlds! West Hills is the first gym in the area to offer P90X.
90 day muscle confusion program- strength training, kickboxing, plyometrics, yoga, core and more! Guests
$149 per month (total program cost $447) - includes 4 hours of group training per week. Days/Times TBD - An
Art Classes
Calligraphy - The Art of
‘Beautiful Writing’
Calligraphy is an artistic discipline that combines
aesthetics and the written word. It can be extremely
relaxing after a hectic day. Artist and teacher, Bruce
Wiegand, will be teaching this 10 week class. His
professional background includes 20 years as a
graphic designer and almost 20 years as a high school
art teacher.
The first 5 weeks will emphasize history, tools,
lettering, and layout techniques. Students will be
introduced to three distinct calligraphic faces. The
second 5 weeks will be dedicated to using basic layout
techniques, and designing and producing at least 3
easy calligraphic works on a variety of papers. Broad
pen, ink, markers, and practice paper will be provided.
Supplementary useful tools will be discussed at the
first class.
The Watercolor Sketchbook
they are to a distant place, or just down the street. We
will sketch a variety of subjects, which may include:
Landscapes, village scenes, boats, gardens, and figures
so that you will have the skills to sketch anywhere.
Tips will include: Choosing your subject, creating
interesting page layouts, and selecting materials for
sketching outdoors. Even if you have never drawn
or painted before, you will enjoy learning how to
record your experiences on paper. You will need to
bring a 2H or H drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, pencil
sharpener, round watercolor brush, watercolor paper
or a watercolor journal, paper towels, and a water
container. Paint will be provided. Instructor Helen
ACT Preparation Workshop
All Squared Away, L.L.C. is offering a three-hour ACT
Preparation Workshop for high school sophomores,
juniors, and seniors. The class helps students prepare
to confidently take the ACT by explaining the format
of the test, sharing the types of questions to expect
for each section of the test, teaching both general and
specific test-taking strategies, giving tips for pacing
during the test, explaining the rubric for the essay
portion, as well as administering and correcting mini
practice tests. The best way to reduce anxiety and
increase confidence is to be familiar with expectations.
With the recent requirement of all juniors to take the
ACT as part of the Michigan Merit Exam (given in
March), it is even more important that students proactively
prepare for this test. Students should bring a
scientific calculator and a pen and pencil. A manual
that includes a complete practice test will be provided
for in-class and home use.
Especially for 10 th , 11 th , and 12th graders, this class
focuses on verbal and writing skills for students taking
with a pretest, shows what to expect on the English,
extensive instruction in writing an argumentative
essay. All skills have applications to everyday reading
and writing, as well as to specific types of test items.
but the emphasis will be on understanding and using
principles of standard written English. Three practice
Enriched For Life - Winter/Spring 2013
Portage Aquatic Club Swim
Team
Portage Aquatic Club was developed for age group
swimmers who wish to cultivate their swimming
ability. The program runs nearly year-round (mid-
September through mid-March and mid-April through
early August). The program is open to swimmers
age 6 and older who can swim the length of the pool.
(Swimmers new to PAC need to meet with a coach
to determine placement. Previous swimmers that
are unsure of placement, contact Coach Parker.)
See group description for tryout dates and times.
This is not a “learn-to-swim” program.
The Portage Aquatic Club CROCODILES Training
Groups, team definitions: The CROCS training
groups are designed to focus primarily on a swimmer’s
competitive objectives, beginning first with PAC
Jr. Developmental Program, and then moving
through a progression including the various levels of
Junior CROCS, CROCS and Senior CROCS Level
Competitive Programs. It is important to remember
that anything introduced in a previous group will
be carried forward and expanded upon at the next
level. Final team placement is at the discretion of
the coaches. This progression is outlined briefly as
follows.
PAC Training Groups Within Group Divisions:
Black VS. Green: Within each group (Junior Crocs,
Crocs, Senior Crocs) there are two divisions, Black
and Green. These categories are designed to place a
child in a group with others who have a similar skill
level. This will make for a better overall learning/
training environment. Swimmers who have been on
CROCS for at least one season are more familiar with
the drills, are competitive, and can handle the training
intervals of the group will generally be placed in the
black group. Swimmers who are not prepared for the
training intervals of the black group, are new to the
program, who need more time to learn the drills of
the program, or who need development and/or play
other sports, will train in the green group. Note - even
though the green division is developmental, there will
still be training and skill development occurring.
PAC offers “open enrollment” and fees can be paid
on a monthly basis, due in advance, on or before the
10th of each month. A $5 late fee will be assessed
for payments received after that date. You have the
option to pay for the entire season and receive 15%
discount. There is also a small discount for multiple
children enrolled.
Participants are encouraged to swim the maximum
number of practices offered. There will be no prorating
of monthly membership fees if your swimmer chooses
to swim fewer days or start in the middle of a billing
period.
USA membership is required. Fee is $57 annually,
payable to Portage Swimming. USA Swimming
offers, as a benefit of membership, insurance coverage
to its members and member clubs to include General
Liability and Excess Accident Medical coverage.
USA meet fees vary by meet.
Junior Crocs-Green/Black
Ages 6-12
In the Junior Crocs Developmental Program, there are
two divisions; Green and Black. This is the beginner
level for all swimmers that are getting started in the
sport, or who enjoy the sport but are unsure about
competing in 2 or 3 day-long meets. This program
would also be appropriate for swimmers who would
like to learn more about swimming in meets and
gain a better understanding before moving to the
more competitive side of swimming. Much of the
focus in these groups will be on learning proper
technique and developing a basic level of endurance
upon which to build in the future. This program will
incorporate local dual/tri-meets and inter-squad,
very fun and low-key swimming competitions that
may happen during practice time (aka, ‘Fun Meet’),
with the goal of providing both swimmers and their
parents an opportunity to gain a better understanding
of swimming before doing the higher level USA
Swimming meets. It will also gauge their child’s
success/progress. The following are the general
aspects of focus for the Junior Croc groups. Swimmers
MUST be able to swim one length of the pool freestyle
with face in the water and one length of the pool
backstroke BEFORE joining this team. (Swimmers
new to PAC need to meet with a coach to determine
placement. Previous swimmers that are unsure of
placement, contact Coach Parker.)
Commitment: If swimmers join the Jr. Crocs/Green
group, they will have 2-3 sessions per week for 30
minutes. If swimmers join the Jr. Crocs/Black group,
swimmers will have 3-4 sessions per week for 45
minutes.
Crocs-Green/Black
This group covers basic swimming endurance,
swimming speed change, and aerobic development.
Swimming technique is expanded. These swimmers
are expected to have learned all four racing strokes and
are now aimed at increasing both technical work and
training. IM training and advancement is developed.
IMR events at meets and advancement to IMX events
are the focus. Swimmers in this group are building
to get an IMX score. (Swimmers new to PAC need
to meet with a coach to determine placement.
Previous swimmers that are unsure of placement,
Commitment: Crocs/Green should practice a
minimum of 3 days a week for 1-1/4 hours. Crocs/
Ages 13 and up
As swimmers enter this group, training will become
increasingly specialized. They will begin to train in
their primary strokes several times a week. They will
be tested to develop paces for their specific level of
training. This will allow grouping with others who
share the same paces to provide a competitive training
atmosphere. In general, there will be a distance
group, a middle distance group, and lanes designated
to specific strokes. (Swimmers new to PAC need
to meet with a coach to determine placement.
Previous swimmers that are unsure of placement,
Commitment: Senior Crocs/Green-Swimmers are
After-School Spanish at
Angling Road
According to experts, introducing children to foreign
languages should begin as early as possible. For a
child, the advantages and benefits of learning multiple
languages at an early age are extremely valuable and
continue long into adulthood.
Just For “Little”
Kids
During this Spanish program, your child will have
exposure to the language through conversation, games
and songs. Vocabulary, grammer and culture will
be taught. The children will have the opportunity
to listen, speak and learn Spanish. This will be an
introduction to the language to build the foundations
for more advanced language skills. The program is
open to new and returning students.
Preschool Art
Very young preschoolers enjoy working with art
materials, with a little one-on-one help from you (or
a favorite big person.) Children 2-years old must
bring a big person. Some little ones have so much
fun bringing you that they want you to come even
when they are 3, 4 or 5. All are welcome, but space is
limited, so register early. Lots of fun and imagination
go into each day’s project. Bring an old shirt or smock,
as we paint - EVERY TIME! All other materials will
be provided. Each session features new projects.
