Corner
My Dear Friends:
This year is almost over; I just cannot
believe that we have just one month left to
fulfill all our dreams and aspirations for the
year 2010. We just concluded our Retreat,
and for those of you who attended, I am sure
it was a special day of spiritual fulfillment.
For starters, this year the Retreat was at a
new venue, but more importantly, we had as
our speaker, the renowned Fr. Bill Halbing,
who has preached to large audiences all over
the world. Not only is he a charismatic
priest, but I was surprised to learn that he is
one of the few Exorcists that are recognized
by the Church. Fr. Bill has the charm and
charisma that can keep an audience
captivated for hours, which he amply
displayed during our Retreat. So for those of
you who attended, I hope this was an
enlightening experience, as it was for me.
My sincere thanks to Dianne Nunes, Valerie
Moniz and all the other Caring Committee
members who helped put this together.
By the time this newsletter reaches you,
Thanksgiving will have come and gone. I
hope all of you had an opportunity to
connect with family and dear friends.
Talking about family and dear friends, it is
time for us, as well, to get connected in
person in a big way, and, yes, we do have the
opportunity to do just that. I look forward
to meeting all of you at our Children’s
Christmas Party which is scheduled for
December 12, closely followed by the
highlight of the year, our Christmas Ball, on
December 18. Our very own Goan band,
PRISM, is busy practicing to ensure they
give you the best, as they
perform along with our
evergreen DJ - Brian
Barreto. I would urge you to mail in your
checks immediately, to avoid any
disappointment, as invariably we always get
sold out early, sometimes before the
deadline.
As we close this year, I want to thank our
Exec. Committee, Planning Committee,
Board of Directors and other sub committees
for all their efforts, as well as their time in
planning and executing events throughout
this year. More importantly, I want to thank
you all for your support and presence at
these events, as it is only YOU and your
enthusiasm that motivates us, and revs up
our adrenaline, to help us put our best foot
forward. This is YOUR Association, so feel
free to make suggestions on how we can
improve our current slate of events, or
suggest additional events to add to the
schedule.
Belated Thanksgiving wishes to you and
your families and best wishes for the
GOANJ ANNUAL ADULT RETREAT
Dr. Francis D’Mello
A special thanks and God Bless to all the members of the NJ Goan Association, who
attended the Retreat on November 7, 2010, at the Queen of Peace Center in North
Brunswick.
Fr. Bill Halbing, an internationally famous Charismatic speaker, was the retreat master.
He was delighted to meet the Goan community of New Jersey, and praised the efforts of
St. Francis Xavier's evangelizing work in Goa. He has travelled extensively, but has not
been to India as yet. He very much hopes to do so in the future.
Fr. Bill gave two talks on faith and the use of the Holy Spirit's gifts in the growth of one’s
faith. He spoke passionately and gave us many tools to help us pray and get closer to God. We ended this special day with
Fr. Bill celebrating Holy Mass, in which I was blessed to be able to concelebrate with him.
The efforts of the members of the Committee to arrange this spiritual event is greatly appreciated. The balance of pleasure and
spirituality in all the events of our Association is so valuable in helping us with our spiritual growth. May God bless all the
members of this great association the rest of this year as well as the coming New Year!
GARAGE SALE FOR ASRO KIDS
Tara DeBellis
The Development we live in decided to organize a garage sale this fall. Knowing that we have some belongings
that we don't need, I decided it would be a good idea to participate and donate the proceeds to a non-profit organization
that helps people less fortunate then us.
This decision to donate to ASRO was an easy one, because every day I wake up so thankful to be blessed with happy
and healthy children. I realize that there are many people who yearn for the basic of necessities, while we take them for
granted, because they are so readily available. Unfortunately, we live in a society that is always wanting more and more,
yet there are so many people who just need a decent meal, and a comfortable place to lay their head at night. I want to
help these ASRO children that are ill, and have so much less then we do. I wish that I could have been there to see the
smiles on their faces when they realized the $107 and proceeds we raised at the sale, along with approx. $200 generous
donations from other members of the GOANJ, was allowing them to have a wonderful Christmas party. My only hope and
prayer is that these children are able to grow up healthy and happy, and be loved unconditionally.
REUSE OF PACEMAKERS AND DEFIBRILLATORS IN INDIA
Dr. Daniel Neville Mascarenhas, a long time member of the GOANJ, is doing valuable work in India, by
providing used pacemakers and defibrillators to heart patients there. These devices have been discarded in
the US, but are still useable, and are helping to prolong the lives of patients in India - patients who cannot
afford these expensive devices. Dr. Mascarenhas started the pacemaker/defibrillator bank at the Holy
Family Hospital in Mumbai in 2004.
He is so grateful to the many helpers who carry these devices when they travel to India.
They are our very own President, Felix Menezes, as well as Chris Nunes, Fr. Basilio, Dr. Deline DaCosta,
Zubina Braganza, Fr. Castelino, Dr. Keith Pimenta Pereira, Dr. Jose Vincent Silva, Dr. Avril D’Souza, Conrad D’Souza,
Cosme Coutinho, Dr. Rosemary D’Souza, Dr. Joyce Sequeira, Dr. Vinette D’Costa, Rosario D’Costa, and his niece Althea, as well
as members of Dr. Neville’s family.
This program, which Dr. Mascarenhas has started, was presented by his collaborators at the Association of American Cardiologist
of Indian Origin (AACIO) and at the American Heart Association Convention in Chicago, on November 14 and 17, and was
enthusiastically received by the audience. It was also reported on MSN news, as well as Reuters. The GOANJ congratulates Dr.
Mascarenhas in his efforts, and wishes him much success with it.
The Sting of Peppercorns is a dazzling first
novel that presents the life of a family in
Goa, against the background of Goa’s fall to
India in 1961, after centuries of Portuguese
rule. This tale of love and tragedy is
written by Antonio Gomes, a goan
cardiologist at the Mount Sinai Medical
Center in New York.
ASRO BED PROJECT
ASRO is a place where orphaned children from parents afflicted with HIV/AIDS,
play, interact, get schooled, and reside amongst themselves in a lovely and
picturesque setting in Tivim, Goa. The Sisters of Mercy, under Caritas-Goa, take
care of the children and live with them as one big family. Interaction with the
outside world is fairly nominal, so communication is limited to mainly visits from
teachers, doctors, and a few caring visitors, apart from the occasional trip that takes
them away from their premises from time to time. A new building is nearly
completed that will house up to 52 children and GOANJ has partnered with ASRO
to supply the beds and mattresses for these children. The targeted cost of the project
was $5000. So far, we have donated $3482. The funding source is mainly drawn
from the nominal funds available to GOANJ through excess monies from costcutting
measures at some larger social functions, raffle sales, mass collections at
picnics, as well as private donations from members. Creative venues such as
garage sales, selling nearly new items via the internet, etc., are some ideas the
GOANJ is considering to boost this total to achieve the final goal. So until this
$5000 goal is realized, the charity projects and other very worthy outreach projects
in Goa, will be put on hold until we have the available funds to do so. In the
meantime, the children at ASRO sleep on new and sturdy beds, with clean and
comfortable mattresses – all thanks to the generosity and compassion of GOANJ
members. ASRO has agreed to put the GOANJ name on these beds, so your
generosity is stamped for everyone to see.
