The Newsletter of the USS Southern Cross
http://www.uss-southerncross.com/
From The Bridge
Well we have almost made it everybody!
By the time this newsletter gets published, our Commissioning
Weekend will be but a few weeks away, and the Southern Cross will
have entered into the annals as a STARFLEET International, ship-ofthe-line.
I spent some words in our last issue talking of the background of the
‘Cross and making mention of the huge advances we have made since
our launch back in November.
And I want to take this time to simply add a bit more to those thoughts
and comments.
Firstly, I think we need to apply recognition to the fact that the
Southern Cross would not be the friendly, stable, active, harmonious
and highly visible chapter it is, without the work, efforts and
commitments of all of our great members. You all deserve a clap on
the shoulder for a job well done in supporting each other to get us to
this point.
It would be so easy to simply list out the names of those people who
have worked so hard to this point but I have held back, simply because
I do not wish to give any one member more ‘accidental’ praise than
another – everyone deserves a medal.
But having said that, there has to be singular recognition given to the
XO, Lt Cmdr Wayne Smith – who although he is always reticent to
put himself forward and often is to be found ‘hiding’ in the shadows,
has nonetheless helped to firm the base on which our chapter is set.
Without his support and encouragement, I for one, do not believe we
would have progressed as quickly as we have.
But this isn’t about Wayne, or even me. This is about US - that
combined group of people who have come together to create a truly
unique congregation of friends.
And here is my second point. It is so much easier to create a group,
club, committee, gang , call it what you will – when the participants
live close by, or are easily able to gather together as a group or are
perhaps friends or family and therefore used to and know each well.
So how much more difficult is it to create a chapter and bond together
to support the will and the needs of the group as a whole, when such
great distance is a barrier to meeting “in the flesh” When all
correspondence is done electronically When the people we
are interacting with cannot see our expressions, hear the tone
of voice and therefore truly understand the manner in which
our conversation is meant to be received Have not even met
the people we are inter-acting with and are perhaps taking
instruction from Have absolutely no idea of the background,
personal values or even what our new friends look like
The answer to these questions has to be, almost impossible –
yet here we are, a large group of people from diverse
backgrounds, cultures, cities and even countries, all with one
common desire - to see OUR chapter and OUR group stand
for something that is worthwhile, personally satisfying, fun,
educational and informative. Above all else this gives each
and every one of us the sense of belonging to a group that is
bonded by common interest and friendship.
August the 14th (the official commissioning date) is not the
‘end’ of anything. It might signify the completion of our
shake-down cruise, but it simply creates a new chapter, a new
beginning and a new set of objectives for all of us.
So I simply say – well done ‘Crossers. Congratulations on our
achievements to date. Congratulations on the creation of
something that is really worthy and worthwhile.
Congratulations on becoming a solid body within Region 11
and finally, a big “thank you” for all the support,
encouragement, friendship and fun you have all provided one
another.
On to the future!
The preparations are coming along nicely for the commissioning
party but there are still a lot of variables that need to be pinned
down. The greetings and messages wishing us good luck are
already starting to come in - above is an incoming transmission
from Captain Alexander Richardson, of Star Trek: Dark Armada 1
whose home port is in the Nederlands, who has included the USS
Nailed To The Masthead
From The Raven’s Writing Desk
Where would we be without our friends
Editorial
August marks our commissioning party, the first time that many of us will meet face-to-face and I
too am looking forward to this if I can make it. The focus of my fandom however has always been on
the virtual world of the internet and on it I have found the best of people and, well, the rest.
There is something about placing your thoughts and creative output on the internet for all to see that
necessitates at the same time a measure of boldness and certain vulnerability. People who would
never dream of giving their fan fiction to friends to read or reading their poetry at a public recital will
find it perfectly acceptable to place it on-line for the world to see!
Luckily I have found for the most part that on-line communities are supportive and try their best to
be socially responsible. What is more it has a spill-over effect so that one group will often help
another. This issue that you hold in your hands is evidence of that very thing.
For example, Lexie Currie, who organised the Star Wars party for the UFP, got immense support
from the South Australian chapter of Fan Force, and this issue would definitely have been poorer
without the great snaps that they have given permission for us to publish. Looks like a good time was
had by all!
Consider also the interview with Tad Pietrzykowski about his "Golden Age" comic The Southern
Cross. Tad was not only generous with his feedback about the Southern Cross, but in his
encyclopedic knowledge of Australian comics, especially the early days of Cyclone. I've got a fair
amount of nostalgia for the old Cyclone - I was a particular fan of Gary Chaloner's Jackaroo because
at the time I was working on the railways in the bush during the week and spending my weekends at
home in Sydney with Mum & Dad.
The support comes in big and small. By far the biggest contribution here is from the heads of
department who are breaking new ground with their work every month. I might make particular note
of Erik Stubblefield's new science section and Josephine Fisher's complex job recording all the ship's
Academy achievements.
However I have been heartened by the support of the Starfleet International, Star Trek and wider sci
fi fandom as well. It would be remiss of me if I did not send out a few thanks to ...
• Jonathan Connor-Foertsch of the USS Angeles for permission to use
certain divisional logos.
• Linda C. Wood for her witty libretto of a Gilbert & Sullivan's
classic, HMS Pinafore
• Masao Okazaki for the use of his Giant class clipper.
Whilst we are on the subject of people helping out, I would like to thank Marine Cadet Christopher
Anderton for his contribution to the issue and point out that if any other cadets would like to see
something of their's in print, a story or artwork, just send it in.
Which leaves me with only one last thing to introduce: my personal fanzine "Acrux"
which will be published monthly. Contributions will be welcome from
any Star Trek fan within the boundaries of Starfleet International's Region 11 and content will be
accepted that meets minimum editorial standards within the publication scope.
Why am I doing a fanzine as well as a newsletter ScuttleButt is your newsletter, it is created to
satisfy your interests and needs. Acrux (the name of the first star of the Southern Cross) is my
fanzine and is meant to be the interface between the different pockets of Star Trek fandom
in the region and the wider Australasian sci fi fandom and general public. Think of Acrux
as being Australasia's window on Star Trek within the Region - professional & licensed
productions, fan productions, gaming, costuming, model-making ... If it has something to
do with Star Trek in Australia, New Zealand or South East Asia it has a place here.
Until later ...
Attention All Stations
from the X.O.s desk
by Lt Cdr Wayne Smith
What I would like to discuss in this issue is the website and what we have been able to do so far and
what we hope to do in the near future. I have redone the crew webpage to new Department logos
because apparently we used someone else’s without us knowing this fact. But I think the new ones
are a nice improvement to the pages that use them and they are our own design not anyone else’s.
Bruce and Alec are still working on the Embarked craft document which should be finished shortly
and will be added to the website so we can see the fighter craft and shuttles we have onboard.
It is getting close to our party and things are moving well me and Steve are really looking forward to
meeting a lot of people in Adelaide we will be there a few hours before Bruce so we can start early☺.
The site is growing with the amount of people coming to see us I think it’s from a lot of separate
sources which is terrific some of the countries visiting us this month are below.
Russia Singapore Netherlands Dominican Republic
China Poland Canada Norway
Brazil Spain France United Arab Emirates
Germany Mexico USA Switzerland
That is to name a few Countries that
are looking at our site and us so we are
really getting looker’s world wide.
Please keep looking at the website as it
changes just about weekly.
I have just bought this game and I must say
it looks very nice none of the other crew
members have it as yet so I have not
played against them. This game is a bit
Cartoonish but very good to play it’s a lot
of fun and worth a look at.
Bruce has just got his xbox back from
repair and it works fine so we will try and
make up some nights to give a few games a
whirl ☺
The Battle of Long Tan
WHAT
The Battle of Long
Tan was one of the most
decisive Australian
victories on record.
A large Viet Cong force had been gathered in
the area around an Australian base, as the
Australians had suspected, and their plan was
to flush out the troops and claim the base; an
un-acceptable political loss.
The Australians executed a sweep of the area, as
the Vietnamese had hoped for.
After some aggressive patrolling, in which one
Viet Cong soldier was killed, the main VC force
was encountered and a battle ensued.
The Australian forces managed to drive back the
VC.
WHERE
Long Tan: A village about 4 km north-east of
Vung Tau in South Vietnam. The Australian
base was surrounded by rubber plantations.
The weather conditions of the area heavily
influenced the
outcome of the battle.
WHEN
During the Vietnam
War, on August 18–
19, 1966.
Marine Cadet Christopher Anderton
WHY
The Viet Cong (or The National Front for the
Liberation of South Vietnam) was attempting to
capture the Australian base, as it was practically
in control of the surrounding providence. There
is much controversy over why the battle really
happened. While the Australians of the D
Company which encountered the VC force say
that it was an accidental encounter that most
probably saved the base, the Vietnamese
soldiers that were in the Battle of Long Tan
view it as an ambush on a large Australian force.
HOW
also used the Reverse Slope defensive
manoeuvre to effectively nullify the VC’s heavy
weaponry.
Since the numbers have been officially recorded
as being 108 Australian soldiers and 1,500-2,650
“Charlies” (Viet Cong) the Australian victory
was a great accomplishment. However,
controversy also surrounds the numbers of each
force, and there will almost definitely be no
eventual resolution to this matter.
This is a resolution taken directly from
http://www.convictcreations.com/history/longtan.htm
The Battle of Long Tan is used even today to
train Australian Officers in the effectiveness of
combining and coordinating infantry, artillery,
armour and military aviation. It was these
components, along with the environmental
conditions (ie pouring rain and terrible mud) that
contributed towards the victory. The D company
"D company was composed of 108 men of
which 18 were killed and 24 were
wounded. After the VC retreat, a search
of the jungle discovered 245 VC bodies.
Questioning of prisoners ascertained that
the offensive force comprised the Viet
Cong 275 regiment and the D445
Battalion. A total force of 2500 men."
The USS Southern Cross, even though
it is a new chapter of Starfleet
International is the heir to a
distinguished history as the successor
to the last SFI chapter in Australia. The
original USS Southern Cross, NCC
1886, fictionally a Miranda class frigate, was a
meeting chapter in Sydney, NSW between about
1986 to at least 2001. I was a member of the
original Southern Cross for a short time until I
decided that I preferred the freedom of a
correspondence membership over the
commitments of a meeting chapter.
But it goes further back than that.
Did you know that there was a HMAS Southern
Cross 1 in WWII Or that there was a radio series
and costumed super hero called the Southern
Cross who defended Australia from saboteurs
and spies during the same period
What the ...
Ok, so maybe I'm stretching the truth a little
with that last bit, but the story of the Southern
Cross comic character involves a real historical
link going back at least as far as the history of
our chapter.
Back in 1985, Tad
Pietrzykowski was one
of the founding
members of
"Cyclone!" a short
lived but
extremely
influential
Australian
comic.
He was
already
established
as a
comic
book
writer
and
illustrator
for his Dark Nebula
graphic Novels and wanted
to contribute another title to the
monthly anthology. He wanted his other story to
be in stark contrast to Dark Nebula, which is a
dark tale of Sci Fi with supernatural overtones.
He settled on a retrospective, swashbuckling
character, the storyline laced with subtle
overtones of the Golden Age of pulp fiction and
Old Time radio - The Southern Cross!
"It was my lament that Australia never had a
'National Pride' hero like the Yanks have
Capt. America, The Shield, Uncle Sam etc.,
so I felt it only right to create one myself that
would be that without being too obvious or
tokenistic.
I laid out the foundation, set up the backdrop,
the whole pretext the character-design etc., &
then handed it to Glenn Lumsden who
literally ran with it. While the initial concept
came from me Glenn put just as much of
himself into it to give it the character that it
exudes. Hence why he is co-creator - he
earned it in my eyes. While my focus was on
my primary creation, The Dark Nebula, his
was on my secondary one, The Southern
Cross, which is how I wanted it as I wanted
them both to contrast one another as night
does to day."
Over the past few weeks I've been privileged to
be able conduct an extensive email interview
with Tad, who has been incredibly generous
with his time. I originally contacted him to
discuss the close links between his creation, The
Southern Cross, and Radio Dramas of the
Golden Age of Radio - was it an accident that
the hero, Gordon Russell was a radio announcer
like Tad himself
"The whole backdrop of the radio theatre was
simply my love of the medium as by trade I
am a Radio Announcer, have been for 21
years. There was never a richer chapter in our
broadcasting history than the days of Radio
Theatre as, in its day, it was their TV. I did
my research & the names of most of the
characters is based on the names of real radio
theatre stars of the day. Don't ask me who
because that research was done about 25
years ago & I would have to start from
scratch to remember.
In all my years in broadcasting I never really
had the opportunity or incentive to pursue the
Southern Cross as a Radio Play as the
formats of all the stations I worked for didn't
suit such a feature. It is only now, while on a
break from broadcasting that I decided to
'complete the loop' & see about adapting The
Southern Cross to radio so that there would
be a radio play about a comic about a radio
play.
y Lt Cmdr Kirok of L’Stok
I am looking at submitting the Southern
Cross as an adapted radio play to finally
compliment the comic feature. I believe the
fact that it already exists in comic form
should be very attractive to them as they like
to explore all avenues of such projects e.g.:
pod-casting, multi-media, on-line content
etc., The fact that visuals can accompany the
audio should be a very tempting carrot.
I'm in the process of adapting the script of the
first chapter for the Radio form. Once that's
done I'll hand it to some former colleagues
who are interested in being involved in this as
it is a change from their usual gigs. By
providing a demo of the radio serial as well
as visual aids of the feature I should be able
to submit it fully costed for consideration by
the ABC for their Regional Production Fund.
I'm presently chasing up the 'team' I've
assembled for putting the demo together
which will take up early July. "
After a 12 year break he is planning on
continuing the adventures of both the Dark
Nebula and The Southern Cross on-line at
thedarknebula.com. This is mainly to introduce
the characters to a younger and wider audience
who have never heard of them. He had been
toying with the notion for some years, but never
had the time until a serious car accident laid him
up for a matter of months with his jaw wired
shut. Since he is by trade a radio announcer this
effectively sidelined him until he was recovered.
"It's ironic that my character [the Dark
Nebula] gains his power after coming back
from the dead and he's given a new lease on
life just as I was. It's amazing what you can
do when you're unable to do the things you're
used to."
For more on The Southern Cross professional
Radio Drama watch out for an article in the next
issue of Sci Fi Studios Magazine 1 entitled, "The
Return of the Theatre of the Mind"
Radio and the internet are not the only media
that we will see Tad and Glenn's work appear in.
"I'm a hair's breath away from having the first
Dark Nebula & Southern Cross print editions
in over 15 years available (via print on
demand). I'm starting with prestige editions
of the first two Dark nebula adventures redone
in a special edition titled 'Origins' & the
entire Southern Cross adventure collected in
one volume (it has only been serialised
previously). All these will be in colour.
Following that I will roll out a series of minitrades,
each collecting 2 Dark Nebula
adventures (again, in colour).
http://thedarknebula.com
Many of my stories were twoparters
so this is an excellent
opportunity to offer these stories complete.
Each a piece of the bigger puzzle. When put
together it makes for an impressive read.
Following on from that the new adventures
continue.
The Dark Nebula 'Origins' Graphic Novel &
The Southern Cross Extra Special Edition
aren't too far away from print & release. They
should be available through
www.indyplanet.com."
As a special scoop for readers of ScuttleButt,
Tad has given me permission to print the covers
of the two prestige editions to be published by
print on demand outlet www.ka-blam.com. You
guys are the first outside the actual Cyclone
production crew to see these.
"I think you'll agree that the look of each is as
different as night is to day, which is how I've
always wanted to keep it between The Dark
Nebula & The Southern Cross. They'll also
be available through my website as well. I
may even get supplies in to sell directly. Any
copies that I get in personally will be sold
autographed."
independent publishing as print-on-demand,
multi-media presentation as a comic and radio
Geothermal Power Generation
A geothermal power station, as we
know it, is one that uses the heat of
the Earth to generate power. The
heat turns water to steam, which
in turn can be used to run a
steam turbine that generates
electricity.
New Zealand is particularly
fortunate in that, because of
its volcanic activity, it has numerous
locations where the heat of the Earth can be
tapped. The Ministry of Economic
Development has estimated that geothermal
power could supply 75% of New Zealand’s
peak demand although only about 15% of
that maximum potential has been developed.
I say fortunate because geothermal power is
one of the most environmentaly friendly
forms of power generation according to
Murdoch University ...
• Its abundant, secure, and, if properly
used, renewable.
• Using modern techniques, it emits less
than 0.2% of the CO 2 of the cleanest fossil
fuel plant, less than 1% of the sulphur
dioxide and less than 0.1% of the
particulates.
• It does not add to environmental
problems such as acid rain, mine spoils,
open pits, oil spills, radioactive waste
disposal or the damming of rivers.
• Its reliable, reasonably available, high
capacity, designed to run 24 hours a day and
independent of the weather or fuel delivery.
• Its modular design is highly flexible,
expandable and construction does not
have a high initial capital outlay & long
lead time.
• The fuel supply is indigenous (ie not
imported), providing economic security,
reducing imports and improving the
balance of payments.
• Because of its nature it can be stored.
• It takes up little land.
Prince Piero Ginori Conti invented the first
geothermal power plant in 1904, at the
Larderello dry steam field in Italy and, on
November 15 1958, New Zealand opened the
second geothermal power station at
Wairakei.
Australia does not have the same geologic
make-up as New Zealand so that the
possibilities for geothermal power are very
limited. Small-scale geothermal power
stations are possible, however, such as the
one currently servicing Birdsville in
Queensland, and South Australia is
investigating the technology.
The Geothermal Education Office
resources, including an excellent on-line
Lima Echo One - Character Building
The new head of the Lima Echo One project
looked from the Andorian to the Tellerite before
him and resisted the urge to leap across the desk
and bang their heads together to knock some
sense into them! He focused instead on limiting
the tiny mannerisms that showed his irritation –
the slight frown as he narrowed his eyes, the
grim set to his mouth and his knuckles
whitening as his fists clenched around a pair of
imaginary necks!
"And you, Professor Tondaner, are adamant that
the failure of your base camp to progress to
even the most basic stage of setting up the
Geothermal power station is because of the lack
of cooperation from the Andorians" A futile
question, he knew, because he had heard this
same thing day-in, day-out all through the trip to
K-427 during the previous planetary season.
The Tellerite let out a snort that seemed entirely
in keeping with his pig-like snout. "I have never
in my life seen such wilful stupidity and can
only assume that they are doing it on purpose!"
“I believe that this is obvious from the reports I
have filed.” He growled, “Their technical team
was given the simple task of building three nulgrav
carriers on which we could transport the
necessary parts for the power plant yet they got
less than one kilometre into the geyser field
before breaking down. It was obviously either
inferior workmanship or criminal negligence.”
The blue-skinned Andorian was stung by this
open insult and, turning to the Tellerite,
clutched at the empty belt where, had Kirok not
disarmed them, he would have been carrying his
Chaka, the ceremonial ice pick that an adult
Andorian would normally never be without.
The sad thing was that these two "men of
science", supposedly trained in the ways of
logical and objective analysis, would eventually
tear each other to pieces in unarmed combat if
not brought under control.
“I have indeed scrutinised the reports and come
to my own conclusions. There has been no
sabotage” he glared at the Andorian, Danernot,
“nor criminal negligence. Both your teams
performed their tasks adequately. The flaw was
in the overall plan, the route that you were
taking across the geyser field.”
They were both staring at him now in surprise
as he gave his pronouncement. “Nul-grav sleds
are prone to breaking down in areas of
geomagnetic flux. I'm surprised your
technicians did not know this.”
Danernot was the first to recover his composure.
“How can we get the construction material to
the power plant site then"
“By taking the sleds over water as barges, towed
by two canoes which will be crewed by a
selection of Andorians and Tellerites picked by
me and headed by you.”
The two academics exploded in indignation at
the idea that they perform manual labour.
“Don’t be stupid, we have powered vehicles that
can be converted to amphibians for the task!”
Tondaner realised as soon as he had said it that
he had over-stepped himself.
The Federation officer slowly stood up, leaning
towards them, his hands splayed on the desk
between them, his body-language threatening
but his voice an unemotional, deep monotone.
"I have been given command of this project and
you will address me as Lieutenant Commander.
At the next sign of dissent I will personally
escort the offender to the brig and make sure he
stays there whilst I call up transport to send him
home. I doubt if either of your superiors will be
happy to see that you have caused a diplomatic
incident by your inability to work together.”
"From this point on all plans will be
countersigned by me and all teams will consist
of mixed Tellerite and Andorian personnel. If
any of your staff cause a breach of protocols I
will hold you two personally responsible."
"There will be no more accidents, no more
arguments and fights. Do I make myself clear I
will draw up schedules that will get us back on
schedule by doubling shifts and raising work
quotas."
The Andorian was the first to bluster this time.
“This is unacceptable!” Just in time he saw the
danger that lurked in the dead recesses of this
strange Klingon’s eyes, “…Lieutenant
Commander!”
Kirok had drawn himself to his full height,
nearly 2m, towering over the two nervous
professors momentarily before breaking the
awkward silence. “I will assume that was
simply a request for clarification. You will find
that I am not entirely without sympathy for your
feelings … once!”
“Do not look so apprehensive gentlemen.”
Kirok attempted to smile and merely succeeded
in baring more sharpened teeth. He groped for a
phrase he had heard his friend Captain Davis
use years ago when they had been faced with a
seemingly insurmountable challenge.
“You will find the experience ... character
building”
Kirok believed that this was a joke. He would
have to ask him some time.
Winter Wellness Guide
As your Doctor aboard the USS
Southern Cross I have noticed
that some of you are not taking
care to ward of the winter blues.
Here are some tips for you all to follow in the
coming months while back on your home
planets while our ship is at the Utopia
Shipyards.
Winter Exercise:
A recent poll of 5000 people at the United
Federation of Planets academy found that
30% got no exercise at all during the winter
months. It’s important to stay active through
all four seasons! I also include that statement
aboard ship even though we have a
regimented thermostat on board, we do visit
other planets and have visitors come aboard
and some seasons are very different from
your home planet.
Winter Cold & Flu advice:
Is it a cold or flu
Do you have a sore throat, runny nose and a
cough If so you most likely have a cold. If
you have a fever and chills, and aches and
pains all over your body, then you probably
have the flu. Respiratory symptoms may
develop later with the flu, often accompanied
by a productive cough. Nausea and vomiting
may also develop particularly with a cold.
The average child gets up to eight colds a
year, where us adults get two to four. If you
cannot find a natural healer on your home
planets please consult your ship’s Bajoran
healer Louise Drew for natural remedies that
help boost immunity and once affected to
lesson the symptoms and help to speed up
recovery. While these treatments can also
decrease the frequency of colds and flu its
still a good idea to keep yourself comfortably
warm but not too hot and make sure the house
is well ventilated while back home on your
home planet.
This winter look for:
Fruit: Apples as they rich in antioxidants that
protect the lungs, while grapefruit, kiwifruit,
lemons, limes, mandarins, navel oranges and
late- winter pineapples are excellent sources
of vitamin C to help keep colds at bay.
Vegetables: Asian greens such as bok choy,
kale, spinach, silverbeet and avocados are
good sources of folate, important for the
function of body cells, but also for
cardiovascular health. Winter vegetables rich
in vitamin C include broccoli, brussel sprouts,
peas, potato, cabbage and cauliflower.
Pumpkin, sweet potato and carrots are rich in
beta-carotene which when converted to
vitamin A assist our immunity.
Winter Soups to boost Wellness
In Eastern traditions, the medicinal and
culinary are very much interwoven with
nutritious meals having a medicinal
component as well. Key ingredients are
onions, garlic, mushrooms and soybean
products such as miso and tofu, incorporated
into invigorating soups. In China a country
back on Earth base stock is often made using
chicken, while the Japanese use dried fish
called bonito as the basis of their master stock
dashi-which helps to lower high blood
pressure. Shitake mushrooms, another
component of dashi have excellent immune
stimulating and restorative qualities, along
with a rich flavour. In traditional oriental
medicine these mushrooms are also known to
help lower cholesterol.
Garnished with onions and off set with
pungent mucous- clearing foods such as
horseradish, ginger and chilli, these soups can
be uplifting and chilli these soups can be
uplifting and tonifying. The combined effects
of the soup heat and the pungency of the
ingredients open up respiratory tract thereby
helping to ward off colds.
Eating for the Season
Food that’s in Season not only tastes better,
but is likely to contain ingredients that suit
the body’s needs for that time of the year.
Whatever the reason there’s something about
seasonal eating that seems natural such as
comforting stews with root vegetables in
winter, strawberries and ice-cream in
summer.
Traditional injection using a hypodermic syringe has
many problems: only skilled staff can do it, it is
expensive and there are problems with air embolisms and
needle-stick injuries.
Hyposprays are a needle-free injection technology that
works by forcing liquid medication at high speed through
a tiny orifice, smaller than the diameter of a human
hair, that is held against the skin. This creates an
ultra-fine stream of high-pressure fluid that
penetrates the skin without using a needle.
An early pioneer of the technology is the Biojector 2000
Fan Productions - Motherhood, an Audio Book
by Lt Cdr
Kirok of
L'Stok
Riddle-me-this ... What's black and white and red all over
Certainly not an audio book!
Audio books have been around, well, for as long as we've had ways of
recording sound! One reason is because there are some books that just cry
out to be read by 'a voice'. In high school I had a copy of "The Rhyme of the
Ancient Mariner" read by Sir Ralph Richardson and, although I found the
epic poem to be a long-winded bore, his reading of it haunts me still!
Some voices have become synonymous with specific genres, especially
horror. When you hear Vincent Price, Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing ...
you know that something creepy is going to crawl out of the woodwork!
Likewise, Star Trek has been blessed with a similar number of trademark
voices. James Doohan, Leonard Nimoy (known to my daughter, bless her
heart, more as the voice of Galvatron in the Original Transformers: The
Movie than as Mr Spock), George Tekai, Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks
all have instantly identifiable voices.
Another major reason is, of course, for the use of the sight impaired. The
figures I have seen on the internet from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 1
in 1993, show that over 1.5% of the Australian population had vision
impairment. With our current population standing at over 21 million this
makes a vision impaired population of over 315,000!
However if we include other reasons for an inability to be able to use
traditional print media, such as people who cannot hold or manipulate
printed materials, who are deaf or have intellectual disabilities or brain
damage, this figure doubles! Over 600,000 nationally who might never have
read a Star Trek fan fiction!
Goodness! Its almost our duty to bring Star Trek to them!
Audio books are attractive to me though because, like most, I have a long commute to work and
given the alternative of listening to the inane chatter of drive time radio, an audio drama or podcast
about a subject that interests me is a much brighter prospect!
I have recorded one of my early fan fiction stories as an audio book to be made available as a free
download from the Newsletter page of the website of the USS Southern Cross. The full text is
available for those who would like to read or download it on the Acrux 2 fanzine.
An interesting question I had to work out was the dividing line between an audio book and an audio
drama - where does one start and the other finish When I asked this of the Audio Drama producers
who took part in the TrekUnited Fan Audio chat 3 of March 24 it was described thus: “Audio books
are usually read by one person (maybe two) who do multiple characters. There is some music and
*usually* even fewer sound effects, whereas audio dramas have a cast, usually more music and a
soundscape.”
For this first effort, I'm going to keep the music and sound
effects to a minimum and hopefully my storytelling will set the
scene for you in the theatre of your mind!
As a special bonus, I am going to add the teaser clip from
something that my daughter, J'Keln Merrys, is making - a
"Halo" fan fiction based on characters from the computer game
(right). She has far more experience in performing than I and has
created a reading with atmospheric music and sound effects.
Have you got a Star Trek fan fiction that you are particularly
proud of Would you like us to produce it for you
Stay tuned to this channel for more information on coming
audio productions! Don't touch that dial!
Science Department Changes
Greetings crewmembers! As your new Chief
Science Officer (ChSC) I want to say
welcome to our two newest science
department members - ENS Gregory Jacobs
and Crewman Andy Gann! We are happy to
have you aboard and we look forward to
serving with you! I would also like to share
with the entire crew the beginnings of our
departmental structure changes.
As the USS Southern Cross has grown
significantly as a chapter, we wanted to
restructure the department in a way that
would focus the purpose of the department,
align personnel into useful roles based on
their preferences, and encourage
participation of new unassigned
crewmembers in the science department. (Of
course, other department members are
welcome to join science activities as well!)
The changes begin with a two section system
based on desired participation levels. The
first section is the STATS officers. The
acronym STATS stands for “Star Trek,
Australasian, Terran, and Science fiction.”
Officers assigned to the science department
may earn one of these roles:
Star Trek Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and reports
historical and recent (or projected) canon and
non-canon Star Trek science and
technologies that is of interest to the USS
Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Star Trek.
Australasian Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and reports
historical and recent (or projected) science
and technologies that directly affects the area
of Earth known as Australia, New Zealand,
and nearby areas that is of interest to
the USS Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Australasia
and related locales.
Terran Sciences and Technology Officerthis
position studies and reports historical
and recent (or projected) science and
technologies that directly affects the other
parts of Earth and the universe that is of
We know more about the edge of the
universe than about the core of our
planet. Could a crazy mission get to the
science.
Sci-Fi Sciences and Technology
Officer: this position studies and
reports historical and recent (or projected)
science and technologies as seen in the world
of science fiction that is of interest to
the USS Southern Cross crew and guests.
Requirements: OTS, SCE, an interest in all
things science, as it pertains to Science
Fiction.
The second section of the science department
is the science staff. Multiple crewmen can
fill these two roles:
Science and Technology Officers: these
positions contribute to all science areas
without concentration in one area.
Requirement: OTS, an interest in all things
science.
Science and Technology Crewmen: these
positions contribute to all science areas
without concentration in one area. These
positions are filled with non-commissioned
crew. Requirement: an interest in all things
science.
All those who choose to be assigned to the
science department aboard the ‘Cross are
encouraged to do four things:
1- HAVE FUN!
2- Pass OTS offered by the STARFLEET
Academy (even if you choose not to be
an “officer,”
3- Take STARFLEET Academy (and/or
SFMC Academy) courses,
4- Share your knowledge, interests, and
discoveries through the ScuttleButt.
If you are shy and not a great writer, that’s
OK! I can help you through editing and
revisions! The important things are that you
participate to the level you wish, have fun,
and contribute to the chapter in some way!
Our current department members are:
A Bright Idea to Save the Earth
Science
Officer
It has been documented that a
major contributor to global
warming is the production of
greenhouse gases, and pollution
from out automobiles and coalfueled
power plants. Sure, we are
all concerned, but we don’t control what
power plants are built. And, face it we
all need to get to work somehow when
public transportation isn’t offered in our
area. What are we to do as consumers
Are we powerless
The answer is no, we are not powerless,
there are many small actions that can add
up to making a big difference in the fight
to save and protect our world from a
downward spiraling environmental
disaster. One way to save power that is
very simple, environmentally sound, and
will save you money is to change your
light bulbs!
FACT: The energy used in the average
home can be responsible for more than
twice the greenhouse gas emissions of
the average car. When you use less
energy at home, you reduce greenhouse
gas emissions from power plants and
help protect our environment from the
risks of global climate change.
Many companies produce fluorescent
light bulbs as an alternative to the
traditional incandescent bulbs.
Incandescent bulbs create light by
running electricity through a wire made
of tungsten, which glows. Fluorescent
bulbs contain gases that give off light
when electricity passes through. They
give off less heat than incandescent
bulbs, so less energy is wasted. They fit
into existing sockets, so no changes are
necessary around your home.
Fluorescent bulbs use less than one third
of the energy to provide the same amount
A new study suggests that the so-called
Goldilocks planet is too hot to be like
Earth, but astronomers have uncovered
another, cooler option.
Too Hot Too Cold Or Just Right
Physicists are constructing materials
that bend light the "wrong" way, an
optical trick that could lead to sharperthan-ever
lenses or even make objects
disappear.
of light. That translates into fewer gases
being released from power plants that can
contribute to global warming.
What about costs Will they save
money Yes and no. The fluorescent
bulbs may be as much as ten times the
cost of the incandescent bulb. However,
since the fluorescents last up to ten times
as long, the energy savings, and thus cost
savings can be great.
Older fluorescent bulbs come in small
spirals that some are not accustomed to.
The newer fluorescent bulbs come in a
variety of styles or colors and many look
just like the incandescent.
Two things worth noting: 1-The bulbs
contain mercury, so they should be
disposed of at a local household
hazardous waste collection center, just
like batteries. Mercury can harm the
environment if not disposed of properly.
2-The bulbs don’t come in the standard
wattage options, since they take much
less watts to produce the same amount of
light. Usually a comparison scale is on
the package for consumers.
Personally, I changed my home’s bulbs
when I moved in to my home three years
ago. I immediately saw a $20 reduction
in power costs monthly and recouped my
costs in less than a year. I have replaced
only one of these
bulbs during these
three years. To
summarize: overall
less cost, less power
consumption, less
greenhouse gases in
the air, and longer lasting bulbs. What’s
the problem Go get some fluorescent
bulbs and help lead the Earth to a
brighter future!
22 Vol.1 Issue 6 ScuttleButt

But What About LEDs
Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are even
better in the energy savings department
when it comes to lighting options. They
are even more energy efficient than
fluorescent and do not have the short
delay when activated, like the fluorescent
bulbs. There are even claims that they
last an average of 100,000 hours (about
ten years). LEDs withstand shocks and
vibrations that the incandescent bulbs
can’t handle, as well as temperature
extremes. They even come in a variety
of colors!
Most LEDs out on the market right now
are in control panels, advertising
displays, small indicator lights, vehicle
initial cost. This does turn into
savings in the long run when one
considers not only the energy
used to power a light source, but
the man-hours needed to replace
burned out bulbs. This is an even
greater saving when the LEDs
are placed into fixtures, such as
traffic lights, or hard to access
places such as a traffic light.
In short, LEDs are the future of
our energy efficient lighting.
Scientists and technicians are
working feverishly to produce LED
products than can be used in the home
without danger of fire or damage to the
braking and turn signals, traffic lights,
and small, portable lights, such as
flashlights or keychains. Why don’t we
see them in our homes
The major negative at this time is that
LEDs are not as efficient as fluorescent
lighting. Sure, they use less power, but
they also produce more heat. Granted,
the heat produced is much less than that
of incandescent filament bulbs, and a lot
less than halogens, but when it comes to
home use, heat dissipation is a problem.
Another drawback is the cost. An LED,
while lasting longer, also carries a greater
fixture. In addition, they are striving to
make the LED even more energy
efficient, so that it produces less heat.
The more LEDs that are produced, the
cost should come down substantially as
well.
The Cadets Mess
By Lt
Cmdr
Kirok of
L'Stok
“Isn’t she beautiful” Lt Lars
Brentwood nudged his friend,
Kevin Duffré, pointing to the Akira
class starship they were heading
towards.
Kevin, who was piloting the shuttle that was
taking his friend to his new ship, the USS
Southern Cross, shrugged. “If you like that
type of thing. For my money, you can’t go
past the Giant class clipper.”
Kevin and Lars had been friends and rivals
since primary school. Whether it was school
grades or school athletics, they had always
been evenly matched so their games, races
and bets usually ended up a draw.
Even when Lars had joined Starfleet and
Kevin had joined the UFP Merchant Marine,
the merchant ships that kept the Federation’s
economy going, they could still not agree
whose job was better, whose captain was the
toughest or whose ship was better.
“Well, the QE 9 is certainly a pretty ship,
and certainly very luxurious, but I prefer
something with sting that gets you there
fast!”
Oh dear! That did it! It was just like the old
days!
“Fast! That heap of junk couldn’t beat the
QE 9 in a pink fit!”
“Rubbish! You’ve been piloting old clunkers
too long! You’ve no idea what it’s like to be
on a real ship!”
For more information on the Kevin scowled at his arch-rival. “I’ve
Giant Class star-clipper check seen your transportation orders so I
out the exhibition at Masao know you are going to Starbase 12
Okazaki's Starfleet Museum after picking up the new crew from
http://www.starfleet-museum.org/index.htm
Earth. The QE 9 is picking up
passengers at New Jo’Burg and then
we are making Starbase 12 our first stop on
an outer fringes cruise.”
Lars’ took up the challenge immediately!
“First ship to dock at Starbase 12 is the
winner and the loser coughs up 3 strips of
Latinum, usual rules”
“You’re on! Someone is going to send you a
big thankyou note for your Latinum!” Kevin
and Lars had got into immense trouble at
school about betting so they had agreed long
ago to give the winnings to charity.
Lars laughed. “You can kiss your Latinum
goodbye, boyo and then you can …”
He paused for effect.
"... race me to Starbase 12!"
You are the Navigator !
... of the USS Southern Cross or the QE 9 -
the fastest clipper of the UFP Merchant
Marine - as you race each other to Starbase
12 on the maiden voyage of the USS
Southern Cross!
How to play
Cut out the board and the two players pieces
(you could print them or glue them onto card
to make them more solid). Both players roll a
six-sided dice and the one with the higher
score gets to choose which piece they will
use or whether they will go first. Whichever
they do not choose becomes their opponent's
choice.
Player 1 places their piece on tile 1, the
Unitia Planitia shipyard, in orbit around
Mars, and rolls the dice. The result of the
roll equals the power of your engines. You
need full power - a six - to break out of orbit,
so you have to keep on circling Mars until
you achieve this. Once free of Mars orbit you
return to Earth to pick up the rest of the crew
then, shooting back past Mars, jump to Warp
as you lay in a course for Starbase 12.
The journey is full of dangers and surprises
and when you will land on tiles with special
instructions, you have to follow the
instructions. When you get to Starbase 12,
you have to match its speed and orbit by
throwing a
six to finish
in much the
same way
Star Trek Sideburns
"Sideburn length is to the bottom of the
opening of the ear, and the angle from
the top of the ear on the inside of the
sideburn to the bottom of the ear on the
outside of the sideburn. "Crepe wool"
theatrical hair was used to shape the
sideburn if the actor didn't have enough
of his own to make the sideburn."
http://propreplicas.yuku.com/topic/6877/t/Trek-Sideburns.html
They tried to kill me with
the hair. Oh yes. They were
so concerned that they had
actually hired a woman to
play the role that they
couldn’t quite - and this is
also anthropologically
fascinating - couldn’t quite
get to it on a real level, so
they targeted the symbol,
which was the hair.
Now I watched this with
great curiosity because I
love to see how men deal
with their deepest anxieties… about will this
franchise succeed or will it not, with this
woman at the helm. ‘Well let’s find
something that we can all busy
ourselves with to such distraction that
we go mad.’ It was the hair.
They changed it five times in the first
season, two, three times in the second.
You know, my message to Patrick
Stewart is, ‘You lucky devil.’ I mean, it was
just constantly a source of anxiety for them,
and of course it had nothing to do with the
reality.
They should have just left it alone. It
didn’t come down very often. Had to
be real bad war for that hair to come
down, and it was down and then it was
up and then it was … it was a million
things. Of very little interest to me.
