From The Bridge<br />

Well we have almost made it everybody!<br />

By the time this newsletter gets published, our Commissioning<br />

Weekend will be but a few weeks away, and the <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> will<br />

have entered into the annals as a STARFLEET International, ship-ofthe-line.<br />

I spent some words in our last issue talking of the background of the<br />

‘<strong>Cross</strong> and making mention of the huge advances we have made since<br />

our launch back in November.<br />

And I want to take this time to simply add a bit more to those thoughts<br />

and comments.<br />

Firstly, I think we need to apply recognition to the fact that the<br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> would not be the friendly, stable, active, harmonious<br />

and highly visible chapter it is, without the work, efforts and<br />

commitments of all of our great members. You all deserve a clap on<br />

the shoulder for a job well done in supporting each other to get us to<br />

this point.<br />

It would be so easy to simply list out the names of those people who<br />

have worked so hard to this point but I have held back, simply because<br />

I do not wish to give any one member more ‘accidental’ praise than<br />

another – everyone deserves a medal.<br />

But having said that, there has to be singular recognition given to the<br />

XO, Lt Cmdr Wayne Smith – who although he is always reticent to<br />

put himself forward and often is to be found ‘hiding’ in the shadows,<br />

has nonetheless helped to firm the base on which our chapter is set.<br />

Without his support and encouragement, I for one, do not believe we<br />

would have progressed as quickly as we have.<br />

But this isn’t about Wayne, or even me. This is about US - that<br />

combined group of people who have come together to create a truly<br />

unique congregation of friends.<br />

And here is my second point. It is so much easier to create a group,<br />

club, committee, gang , call it what you will – when the participants<br />

live close by, or are easily able to gather together as a group or are<br />

perhaps friends or family and therefore used to and know each well.<br />

So how much more difficult is it to create a chapter and bond together<br />

to support the will and the needs of the group as a whole, when such<br />

great distance is a barrier to meeting “in the flesh” When all<br />

correspondence is done electronically When the people we<br />

are interacting with cannot see our expressions, hear the tone<br />

of voice and therefore truly understand the manner in which<br />

our conversation is meant to be received Have not even met<br />

the people we are inter-acting with and are perhaps taking<br />

instruction from Have absolutely no idea of the background,<br />

personal values or even what our new friends look like<br />

The answer to these questions has to be, almost impossible –<br />

yet here we are, a large group of people from diverse<br />

backgrounds, cultures, cities and even countries, all with one<br />

common desire - to see OUR chapter and OUR group stand<br />

for something that is worthwhile, personally satisfying, fun,<br />

educational and informative. Above all else this gives each<br />

and every one of us the sense of belonging to a group that is<br />

bonded by common interest and friendship.<br />

August the 14th (the official commissioning date) is not the<br />

‘end’ of anything. It might signify the completion of our<br />

shake-down cruise, but it simply creates a new chapter, a new<br />

beginning and a new set of objectives for all of us.<br />

So I simply say – well done ‘<strong>Cross</strong>ers. Congratulations on our<br />

achievements to date. Congratulations on the creation of<br />

something that is really worthy and worthwhile.<br />

Congratulations on becoming a solid body within Region 11<br />

and finally, a big “thank you” for all the support,<br />

encouragement, friendship and fun you have all provided one<br />

another.<br />

The preparations are coming along nicely for the commissioning<br />

party but there are still a lot of variables that need to be pinned<br />

down. The greetings and messages wishing us good luck are<br />

already starting to come in - above is an incoming transmission<br />

from Captain Alexander Richardson, of Star Trek: Dark Armada 1<br />

whose home port is in the Nederlands, who has included the <strong>USS</strong><br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> in their premiere episode!<br />

Where would we be without our friends<br />

Editorial<br />

August marks our commissioning party, the first time that many of us will meet face-to-face and I<br />

too am looking forward to this if I can make it. The focus of my fandom however has always been on<br />

the virtual world of the internet and on it I have found the best of people and, well, the rest.<br />

There is something about placing your thoughts and creative output on the internet for all to see that<br />

necessitates at the same time a measure of boldness and certain vulnerability. People who would<br />

never dream of giving their fan fiction to friends to read or reading their poetry at a public recital will<br />

find it perfectly acceptable to place it on-line for the world to see!<br />

Luckily I have found for the most part that on-line communities are supportive and try their best to<br />

be socially responsible. What is more it has a spill-over effect so that one group will often help<br />

another. This issue that you hold in your hands is evidence of that very thing.<br />

For example, Lexie Currie, who organised the Star Wars party for the UFP, got immense support<br />

from the South Australian chapter of Fan Force, and this issue would definitely have been poorer<br />

without the great snaps that they have given permission for us to publish. Looks like a good time was<br />

had by all!<br />

Consider also the interview with Tad Pietrzykowski about his "Golden Age" comic The <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong>. Tad was not only generous with his feedback about the <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>, but in his<br />

encyclopedic knowledge of Australian comics, especially the early days of Cyclone. I've got a fair<br />

amount of nostalgia for the old Cyclone - I was a particular fan of Gary Chaloner's Jackaroo because<br />

at the time I was working on the railways in the bush during the week and spending my weekends at<br />

home in Sydney with Mum & Dad.<br />

The support comes in big and small. By far the biggest contribution here is from the heads of<br />

department who are breaking new ground with their work every month. I might make particular note<br />

of Erik Stubblefield's new science section and Josephine Fisher's complex job recording all the ship's<br />

Academy achievements.<br />

However I have been heartened by the support of the Starfleet International, Star Trek and wider sci<br />

fi fandom as well. It would be remiss of me if I did not send out a few thanks to ...<br />

• Jonathan Connor-Foertsch of the <strong>USS</strong> Angeles for permission to use<br />

certain divisional logos.<br />

• Linda C. Wood for her witty libretto of a Gilbert & Sullivan's<br />

classic, HMS Pinafore<br />

• Masao Okazaki for the use of his Giant class clipper.<br />

Whilst we are on the subject of people helping out, I would like to thank Marine Cadet Christopher<br />

Anderton for his contribution to the issue and point out that if any other cadets would like to see<br />

something of their's in print, a story or artwork, just send it in.<br />

Which leaves me with only one last thing to introduce: my personal fanzine "Acrux"<br />

which will be published monthly. Contributions will be welcome from<br />

any Star Trek fan within the boundaries of Starfleet International's Region 11 and content will be<br />

accepted that meets minimum editorial standards within the publication scope.<br />

Why am I doing a fanzine as well as a newsletter <strong>ScuttleButt</strong> is your newsletter, it is created to<br />

satisfy your interests and needs. Acrux (the name of the first star of the <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>) is my<br />

fanzine and is meant to be the interface between the different pockets of Star Trek fandom<br />

in the region and the wider Australasian sci fi fandom and general public. Think of Acrux<br />

as being Australasia's window on Star Trek within the Region - professional & licensed<br />

productions, fan productions, gaming, costuming, model-making ... If it has something to<br />

do with Star Trek in Australia, New Zealand or South East Asia it has a place here.<br />

Attention All Stations<br />

What I would like to discuss in this issue is the website and what we have been able to do so far and<br />

what we hope to do in the near future. I have redone the crew webpage to new Department logos<br />

because apparently we used someone else’s without us knowing this fact. But I think the new ones<br />

are a nice improvement to the pages that use them and they are our own design not anyone else’s.<br />

Bruce and Alec are still working on the Embarked craft document which should be finished shortly<br />

and will be added to the website so we can see the fighter craft and shuttles we have onboard.<br />

It is getting close to our party and things are moving well me and Steve are really looking forward to<br />

meeting a lot of people in Adelaide we will be there a few hours before Bruce so we can start early☺.<br />

The site is growing with the amount of people coming to see us I think it’s from a lot of separate<br />

sources which is terrific some of the countries visiting us this month are below.<br />

The Battle of Long Tan<br />

WHAT<br />

The Battle of Long<br />

Tan was one of the most<br />

decisive Australian<br />

victories on record.<br />

A large Viet Cong force had been gathered in<br />

the area around an Australian base, as the<br />

Australians had suspected, and their plan was<br />

to flush out the troops and claim the base; an<br />

un-acceptable political loss.<br />

The Australians executed a sweep of the area, as<br />

the Vietnamese had hoped for.<br />

After some aggressive patrolling, in which one<br />

Viet Cong soldier was killed, the main VC force<br />

was encountered and a battle ensued.<br />

The Australian forces managed to drive back the<br />

VC.<br />

WHERE<br />

Long Tan: A village about 4 km north-east of<br />

Vung Tau in South Vietnam. The Australian<br />

base was surrounded by rubber plantations.<br />

The weather conditions of the area heavily<br />

influenced the<br />

outcome of the battle.<br />

WHY<br />

The Viet Cong (or The National Front for the<br />

Liberation of South Vietnam) was attempting to<br />

capture the Australian base, as it was practically<br />

in control of the surrounding providence. There<br />

is much controversy over why the battle really<br />

happened. While the Australians of the D<br />

Company which encountered the VC force say<br />

that it was an accidental encounter that most<br />

probably saved the base, the Vietnamese<br />

soldiers that were in the Battle of Long Tan<br />

view it as an ambush on a large Australian force.<br />

HOW<br />

also used the Reverse Slope defensive<br />

manoeuvre to effectively nullify the VC’s heavy<br />

weaponry.<br />

Since the numbers have been officially recorded<br />

as being 108 Australian soldiers and 1,500-2,650<br />

“Charlies” (Viet Cong) the Australian victory<br />

was a great accomplishment. However,<br />

controversy also surrounds the numbers of each<br />

force, and there will almost definitely be no<br />

eventual resolution to this matter.<br />

The Battle of Long Tan is used even today to<br />

train Australian Officers in the effectiveness of<br />

combining and coordinating infantry, artillery,<br />

armour and military aviation. It was these<br />

components, along with the environmental<br />

conditions (ie pouring rain and terrible mud) that<br />

contributed towards the victory. The D company<br />

"D company was composed of 108 men of<br />

which 18 were killed and 24 were<br />

wounded. After the VC retreat, a search<br />

of the jungle discovered 245 VC bodies.<br />

Questioning of prisoners ascertained that<br />

the offensive force comprised the Viet<br />

Cong 275 regiment and the D445<br />

Battalion. A total force of 2500 men."<br />

The <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>, even though<br />

it is a new chapter of Starfleet<br />

International is the heir to a<br />

distinguished history as the successor<br />

to the last SFI chapter in Australia. The<br />

original <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>, NCC<br />

1886, fictionally a Miranda class frigate, was a<br />

meeting chapter in Sydney, NSW between about<br />

1986 to at least 2001. I was a member of the<br />

original <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> for a short time until I<br />

decided that I preferred the freedom of a<br />

correspondence membership over the<br />

commitments of a meeting chapter.<br />

But it goes further back than that.<br />

Did you know that there was a HMAS <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong> 1 in WWII Or that there was a radio series<br />

and costumed super hero called the <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong> who defended Australia from saboteurs<br />

and spies during the same period<br />

What the ... <br />

Ok, so maybe I'm stretching the truth a little<br />

with that last bit, but the story of the <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong> comic character involves a real historical<br />

link going back at least as far as the history of<br />

our chapter.<br />

Back in 1985, Tad<br />

Pietrzykowski was one<br />

of the founding<br />

members of<br />

"Cyclone!" a short<br />

lived but<br />

extremely<br />

influential<br />

Australian<br />

comic.<br />

He was<br />

already<br />

established<br />

as a<br />

comic<br />

book<br />

writer<br />

and<br />

illustrator<br />

for his Dark Nebula<br />

graphic Novels and wanted<br />

to contribute another title to the<br />

monthly anthology. He wanted his other story to<br />

be in stark contrast to Dark Nebula, which is a<br />

dark tale of Sci Fi with supernatural overtones.<br />

He settled on a retrospective, swashbuckling<br />

character, the storyline laced with subtle<br />

overtones of the Golden Age of pulp fiction and<br />

Old Time radio - The <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>!<br />

"It was my lament that Australia never had a<br />

'National Pride' hero like the Yanks have<br />

Capt. America, The Shield, Uncle Sam etc.,<br />

so I felt it only right to create one myself that<br />

would be that without being too obvious or<br />

tokenistic.<br />

I laid out the foundation, set up the backdrop,<br />

the whole pretext the character-design etc., &<br />

then handed it to Glenn Lumsden who<br />

literally ran with it. While the initial concept<br />

came from me Glenn put just as much of<br />

himself into it to give it the character that it<br />

exudes. Hence why he is co-creator - he<br />

earned it in my eyes. While my focus was on<br />

my primary creation, The Dark Nebula, his<br />

was on my secondary one, The <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong>, which is how I wanted it as I wanted<br />

them both to contrast one another as night<br />

does to day."<br />

Over the past few weeks I've been privileged to<br />

be able conduct an extensive email interview<br />

with Tad, who has been incredibly generous<br />

with his time. I originally contacted him to<br />

discuss the close links between his creation, The<br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>, and Radio Dramas of the<br />

Golden Age of Radio - was it an accident that<br />

the hero, Gordon Russell was a radio announcer<br />

like Tad himself<br />

"The whole backdrop of the radio theatre was<br />

simply my love of the medium as by trade I<br />

am a Radio Announcer, have been for 21<br />

years. There was never a richer chapter in our<br />

broadcasting history than the days of Radio<br />

Theatre as, in its day, it was their TV. I did<br />

my research & the names of most of the<br />

characters is based on the names of real radio<br />

theatre stars of the day. Don't ask me who<br />

because that research was done about 25<br />

years ago & I would have to start from<br />

scratch to remember.<br />

In all my years in broadcasting I never really<br />

had the opportunity or incentive to pursue the<br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> as a Radio Play as the<br />

formats of all the stations I worked for didn't<br />

suit such a feature. It is only now, while on a<br />

break from broadcasting that I decided to<br />

'complete the loop' & see about adapting The<br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> to radio so that there would<br />

be a radio play about a comic about a radio<br />

play.<br />

I am looking at submitting the <strong>Southern</strong><br />

<strong>Cross</strong> as an adapted radio play to finally<br />

compliment the comic feature. I believe the<br />

fact that it already exists in comic form<br />

should be very attractive to them as they like<br />

to explore all avenues of such projects e.g.:<br />

pod-casting, multi-media, on-line content<br />

etc., The fact that visuals can accompany the<br />

audio should be a very tempting carrot.<br />

I'm in the process of adapting the script of the<br />

first chapter for the Radio form. Once that's<br />

done I'll hand it to some former colleagues<br />

who are interested in being involved in this as<br />

it is a change from their usual gigs. By<br />

providing a demo of the radio serial as well<br />

as visual aids of the feature I should be able<br />

to submit it fully costed for consideration by<br />

the ABC for their Regional Production Fund.<br />

I'm presently chasing up the 'team' I've<br />

assembled for putting the demo together<br />

which will take up early July. "<br />

After a 12 year break he is planning on<br />

continuing the adventures of both the Dark<br />

Nebula and The <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> on-line at<br />

thedarknebula.com. This is mainly to introduce<br />

the characters to a younger and wider audience<br />

who have never heard of them. He had been<br />

toying with the notion for some years, but never<br />

had the time until a serious car accident laid him<br />

up for a matter of months with his jaw wired<br />

shut. Since he is by trade a radio announcer this<br />

effectively sidelined him until he was recovered.<br />

"It's ironic that my character [the Dark<br />

Nebula] gains his power after coming back<br />

from the dead and he's given a new lease on<br />

life just as I was. It's amazing what you can<br />

do when you're unable to do the things you're<br />

used to."<br />

of the first two Dark nebula adventures redone<br />

one volume (it has only been serialised<br />

Geothermal Power Generation<br />

A geothermal power station, as we<br />

know it, is one that uses the heat of<br />

the Earth to generate power. The<br />

heat turns water to steam, which<br />

in turn can be used to run a<br />

steam turbine that generates<br />

electricity.<br />

New Zealand is particularly<br />

fortunate in that, because of<br />

its volcanic activity, it has numerous<br />

locations where the heat of the Earth can be<br />

tapped. The Ministry of Economic<br />

Development has estimated that geothermal<br />

power could supply 75% of New Zealand’s<br />

peak demand although only about 15% of<br />

that maximum potential has been developed.<br />

I say fortunate because geothermal power is<br />

one of the most environmentaly friendly<br />

forms of power generation according to<br />

Murdoch University ...<br />

• Its abundant, secure, and, if properly<br />

used, renewable.<br />

• Using modern techniques, it emits less<br />

than 0.2% of the CO 2 of the cleanest fossil<br />

fuel plant, less than 1% of the sulphur<br />

dioxide and less than 0.1% of the<br />

particulates.<br />

• It does not add to environmental<br />

problems such as acid rain, mine spoils,<br />

open pits, oil spills, radioactive waste<br />

disposal or the damming of rivers.<br />

• Its reliable, reasonably available, high<br />

capacity, designed to run 24 hours a day and<br />

independent of the weather or fuel delivery.<br />

• Its modular design is highly flexible,<br />

expandable and construction does not<br />

have a high initial capital outlay & long<br />

lead time.<br />

• The fuel supply is indigenous (ie not<br />

imported), providing economic security,<br />

reducing imports and improving the<br />

balance of payments.<br />

• Because of its nature it can be stored.<br />

• It takes up little land.<br />

Prince Piero Ginori Conti invented the first<br />

geothermal power plant in 1904, at the<br />

Larderello dry steam field in Italy and, on<br />

November 15 1958, New Zealand opened the<br />

second geothermal power station at<br />

Wairakei.<br />

Australia does not have the same geologic<br />

make-up as New Zealand so that the<br />

possibilities for geothermal power are very<br />

limited. Small-scale geothermal power<br />

stations are possible, however, such as the<br />

one currently servicing Birdsville in<br />

Queensland, and South Australia is<br />

investigating the technology.<br />

looked from the Andorian to the Tellerite before<br />

him and resisted the urge to leap across the desk<br />

and bang their heads together to knock some<br />

sense into them! He focused instead on limiting<br />

the tiny mannerisms that showed his irritation –<br />

the slight frown as he narrowed his eyes, the<br />

grim set to his mouth and his knuckles<br />

whitening as his fists clenched around a pair of<br />

imaginary necks!<br />

"And you, Professor Tondaner, are adamant that<br />

the failure of your base camp to progress to<br />

even the most basic stage of setting up the<br />

Geothermal power station is because of the lack<br />

of cooperation from the Andorians" A futile<br />

question, he knew, because he had heard this<br />

same thing day-in, day-out all through the trip to<br />

K-427 during the previous planetary season.<br />

The Tellerite let out a snort that seemed entirely<br />

in keeping with his pig-like snout. "I have never<br />

in my life seen such wilful stupidity and can<br />

only assume that they are doing it on purpose!"<br />

“I believe that this is obvious from the reports I<br />

have filed.” He growled, “Their technical team<br />

was given the simple task of building three nulgrav<br />

carriers on which we could transport the<br />

necessary parts for the power plant yet they got<br />

less than one kilometre into the geyser field<br />

before breaking down. It was obviously either<br />

inferior workmanship or criminal negligence.”<br />

The blue-skinned Andorian was stung by this<br />

open insult and, turning to the Tellerite,<br />

clutched at the empty belt where, had Kirok not<br />

disarmed them, he would have been carrying his<br />

Chaka, the ceremonial ice pick that an adult<br />

Andorian would normally never be without.<br />

The sad thing was that these two "men of<br />

science", supposedly trained in the ways of<br />

logical and objective analysis, would eventually<br />

tear each other to pieces in unarmed combat if<br />

not brought under control.<br />

“I have indeed scrutinised the reports and come<br />

to my own conclusions. There has been no<br />

sabotage” he glared at the Andorian, Danernot,<br />

“nor criminal negligence. Both your teams<br />

performed their tasks adequately. The flaw was<br />

in the overall plan, the route that you were<br />

taking across the geyser field.”<br />

They were both staring at him now in surprise<br />

as he gave his pronouncement. “Nul-grav sleds<br />

are prone to breaking down in areas of<br />

geomagnetic flux. I'm surprised your<br />

technicians did not know this.”<br />

Danernot was the first to recover his composure.<br />

“How can we get the construction material to<br />

the power plant site then"<br />

“By taking the sleds over water as barges, towed<br />

by two canoes which will be crewed by a<br />

selection of Andorians and Tellerites picked by<br />

me and headed by you.”<br />

The two academics exploded in indignation at<br />

the idea that they perform manual labour.<br />

“Don’t be stupid, we have powered vehicles that<br />

can be converted to amphibians for the task!”<br />

Tondaner realised as soon as he had said it that<br />

he had over-stepped himself.<br />

The Federation officer slowly stood up, leaning<br />

towards them, his hands splayed on the desk<br />

between them, his body-language threatening<br />

but his voice an unemotional, deep monotone.<br />

"I have been given command of this project and<br />

you will address me as Lieutenant Commander.<br />

At the next sign of dissent I will personally<br />

escort the offender to the brig and make sure he<br />

stays there whilst I call up transport to send him<br />

home. I doubt if either of your superiors will be<br />

happy to see that you have caused a diplomatic<br />

incident by your inability to work together.”<br />

"From this point on all plans will be<br />

countersigned by me and all teams will consist<br />

of mixed Tellerite and Andorian personnel. If<br />

any of your staff cause a breach of protocols I<br />

will hold you two personally responsible."<br />

"There will be no more accidents, no more<br />

arguments and fights. Do I make myself clear I<br />

will draw up schedules that will get us back on<br />

schedule by doubling shifts and raising work<br />

quotas."<br />

The Andorian was the first to bluster this time.<br />

“This is unacceptable!” Just in time he saw the<br />

danger that lurked in the dead recesses of this<br />

strange Klingon’s eyes, “…Lieutenant<br />

Commander!”<br />

Kirok had drawn himself to his full height,<br />

nearly 2m, towering over the two nervous<br />

professors momentarily before breaking the<br />

awkward silence. “I will assume that was<br />

simply a request for clarification. You will find<br />

that I am not entirely without sympathy for your<br />

feelings … once!”<br />

“Do not look so apprehensive gentlemen.”<br />

Kirok attempted to smile and merely succeeded<br />

in baring more sharpened teeth. He groped for a<br />

phrase he had heard his friend Captain Davis<br />

use years ago when they had been faced with a<br />

seemingly insurmountable challenge.<br />

“You will find the experience ... character<br />

building”<br />

Kirok believed that this was a joke. He would<br />

have to ask him some time.<br />

Winter Wellness Guide<br />

As your Doctor aboard the <strong>USS</strong><br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> I have noticed<br />

that some of you are not taking<br />

care to ward of the winter blues.<br />

Here are some tips for you all to follow in the<br />

coming months while back on your home<br />

planets while our ship is at the Utopia<br />

Shipyards.<br />

Winter Exercise:<br />

A recent poll of 5000 people at the United<br />

Federation of Planets academy found that<br />

30% got no exercise at all during the winter<br />

months. It’s important to stay active through<br />

all four seasons! I also include that statement<br />

aboard ship even though we have a<br />

regimented thermostat on board, we do visit<br />

other planets and have visitors come aboard<br />

and some seasons are very different from<br />

your home planet.<br />

Winter Cold & Flu advice:<br />

Is it a cold or flu<br />

Do you have a sore throat, runny nose and a<br />

cough If so you most likely have a cold. If<br />

you have a fever and chills, and aches and<br />

pains all over your body, then you probably<br />

have the flu. Respiratory symptoms may<br />

develop later with the flu, often accompanied<br />

by a productive cough. Nausea and vomiting<br />

may also develop particularly with a cold.<br />

The average child gets up to eight colds a<br />

year, where us adults get two to four. If you<br />

cannot find a natural healer on your home<br />

planets please consult your ship’s Bajoran<br />

healer Louise Drew for natural remedies that<br />

help boost immunity and once affected to<br />

lesson the symptoms and help to speed up<br />

recovery. While these treatments can also<br />

decrease the frequency of colds and flu its<br />

still a good idea to keep yourself comfortably<br />

warm but not too hot and make sure the house<br />

is well ventilated while back home on your<br />

home planet.<br />

This winter look for:<br />

Fruit: Apples as they rich in antioxidants that<br />

protect the lungs, while grapefruit, kiwifruit,<br />

lemons, limes, mandarins, navel oranges and<br />

late- winter pineapples are excellent sources<br />

of vitamin C to help keep colds at bay.<br />

Vegetables: Asian greens such as bok choy,<br />

kale, spinach, silverbeet and avocados are<br />

good sources of folate, important for the<br />

function of body cells, but also for<br />

cardiovascular health. Winter vegetables rich<br />

in vitamin C include broccoli, brussel sprouts,<br />

peas, potato, cabbage and cauliflower.<br />

Pumpkin, sweet potato and carrots are rich in<br />

beta-carotene which when converted to<br />

vitamin A assist our immunity.<br />

Winter Soups to boost Wellness<br />

In Eastern traditions, the medicinal and<br />

culinary are very much interwoven with<br />

nutritious meals having a medicinal<br />

component as well. Key ingredients are<br />

onions, garlic, mushrooms and soybean<br />

products such as miso and tofu, incorporated<br />

into invigorating soups. In China a country<br />

back on Earth base stock is often made using<br />

chicken, while the Japanese use dried fish<br />

called bonito as the basis of their master stock<br />

dashi-which helps to lower high blood<br />

pressure. Shitake mushrooms, another<br />

component of dashi have excellent immune<br />

stimulating and restorative qualities, along<br />

with a rich flavour. In traditional oriental<br />

medicine these mushrooms are also known to<br />

help lower cholesterol.<br />

Garnished with onions and off set with<br />

pungent mucous- clearing foods such as<br />

horseradish, ginger and chilli, these soups can<br />

be uplifting and chilli these soups can be<br />

uplifting and tonifying. The combined effects<br />

of the soup heat and the pungency of the<br />

ingredients open up respiratory tract thereby<br />

helping to ward off colds.<br />

Eating for the Season<br />

Food that’s in Season not only tastes better,<br />

but is likely to contain ingredients that suit<br />

the body’s needs for that time of the year.<br />

Whatever the reason there’s something about<br />

seasonal eating that seems natural such as<br />

comforting stews with root vegetables in<br />

winter, strawberries and ice-cream in<br />

summer.<br />

expensive and there are problems with air embolisms and<br />

needle-stick injuries.<br />

Hyposprays are a needle-free injection technology that<br />

works by forcing liquid medication at high speed through<br />

a tiny orifice, smaller than the diameter of a human<br />

hair, that is held against the skin. This creates an<br />

ultra-fine stream of high-pressure fluid that<br />

Fan Productions - Motherhood, an Audio Book<br />

Riddle-me-this ... What's black and white and red all over<br />

Certainly not an audio book!<br />

Audio books have been around, well, for as long as we've had ways of<br />

recording sound! One reason is because there are some books that just cry<br />

out to be read by 'a voice'. In high school I had a copy of "The Rhyme of the<br />

Ancient Mariner" read by Sir Ralph Richardson and, although I found the<br />

epic poem to be a long-winded bore, his reading of it haunts me still!<br />

Some voices have become synonymous with specific genres, especially<br />

horror. When you hear Vincent Price, Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing ...<br />

you know that something creepy is going to crawl out of the woodwork!<br />

Likewise, Star Trek has been blessed with a similar number of trademark<br />

voices. James Doohan, Leonard Nimoy (known to my daughter, bless her<br />

heart, more as the voice of Galvatron in the Original Transformers: The<br />

Movie than as Mr Spock), George Tekai, Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks<br />

all have instantly identifiable voices.<br />

Another major reason is, of course, for the use of the sight impaired. The<br />

figures I have seen on the internet from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 1<br />

in 1993, show that over 1.5% of the Australian population had vision<br />

impairment. With our current population standing at over 21 million this<br />

makes a vision impaired population of over 315,000!<br />

However if we include other reasons for an inability to be able to use<br />

traditional print media, such as people who cannot hold or manipulate<br />

printed materials, who are deaf or have intellectual disabilities or brain<br />

damage, this figure doubles! Over 600,000 nationally who might never have<br />

read a Star Trek fan fiction!<br />

Goodness! Its almost our duty to bring Star Trek to them!<br />

Audio books are attractive to me though because, like most, I have a long commute to work and<br />

given the alternative of listening to the inane chatter of drive time radio, an audio drama or podcast<br />

about a subject that interests me is a much brighter prospect!<br />

I have recorded one of my early fan fiction stories as an audio book to be made available as a free<br />

download from the Newsletter page of the website of the <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>. The full text is<br />

available for those who would like to read or download it on the Acrux 2 fanzine.<br />

An interesting question I had to work out was the dividing line between an audio book and an audio<br />

drama - where does one start and the other finish When I asked this of the Audio Drama producers<br />

who took part in the TrekUnited Fan Audio chat 3 of March 24 it was described thus: “Audio books<br />

are usually read by one person (maybe two) who do multiple characters. There is some music and<br />

*usually* even fewer sound effects, whereas audio dramas have a cast, usually more music and a<br />

soundscape.”<br />

For this first effort, I'm going to keep the music and sound<br />

effects to a minimum and hopefully my storytelling will set the<br />

scene for you in the theatre of your mind!<br />

As a special bonus, I am going to add the teaser clip from<br />

something that my daughter, J'Keln Merrys, is making - a<br />

"Halo" fan fiction based on characters from the computer game<br />

(right). She has far more experience in performing than I and has<br />

created a reading with atmospheric music and sound effects.<br />

Science Department Changes<br />

Greetings crewmembers! As your new Chief<br />

Science Officer (ChSC) I want to say<br />

welcome to our two newest science<br />

department members - ENS Gregory Jacobs<br />

and Crewman Andy Gann! We are happy to<br />

have you aboard and we look forward to<br />

serving with you! I would also like to share<br />

with the entire crew the beginnings of our<br />

departmental structure changes.<br />

As the <strong>USS</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> has grown<br />

significantly as a chapter, we wanted to<br />

restructure the department in a way that<br />

would focus the purpose of the department,<br />

align personnel into useful roles based on<br />

their preferences, and encourage<br />

participation of new unassigned<br />

crewmembers in the science department. (Of<br />

course, other department members are<br />

welcome to join science activities as well!)<br />

The changes begin with a two section system<br />

based on desired participation levels. The<br />

first section is the STATS officers. The<br />

acronym STATS stands for “Star Trek,<br />

Australasian, Terran, and Science fiction.”<br />

Officers assigned to the science department<br />

may earn one of these roles:<br />

Star Trek Sciences and Technology<br />

Officer: this position studies and reports<br />

historical and recent (or projected) canon and<br />

non-canon Star Trek science and<br />

without concentration in one area.<br />

Requirement: OTS, an interest in all things<br />

science.<br />

Science and Technology Crewmen: these<br />

positions contribute to all science areas<br />

without concentration in one area. These<br />

positions are filled with non-commissioned<br />

crew. Requirement: an interest in all things<br />

science.<br />

All those who choose to be assigned to the<br />

science department aboard the ‘<strong>Cross</strong> are<br />

encouraged to do four things:<br />

1- HAVE FUN!<br />

2- Pass OTS offered by the STARFLEET<br />

Academy (even if you choose not to be<br />

an “officer,”<br />

3- Take STARFLEET Academy (and/or<br />

SFMC Academy) courses,<br />

4- Share your knowledge, interests, and<br />

discoveries through the <strong>ScuttleButt</strong>.<br />

If you are shy and not a great writer, that’s<br />

OK! I can help you through editing and<br />

revisions! The important things are that you<br />

participate to the level you wish, have fun,<br />

and contribute to the chapter in some way!<br />

A Bright Idea to Save the Earth<br />

It has been documented that a<br />

major contributor to global<br />

warming is the production of<br />

greenhouse gases, and pollution<br />

from out automobiles and coalfueled<br />

power plants. Sure, we are<br />

all concerned, but we don’t control what<br />

power plants are built. And, face it we<br />

all need to get to work somehow when<br />

public transportation isn’t offered in our<br />

area. What are we to do as consumers<br />

Are we powerless<br />

The answer is no, we are not powerless,<br />

there are many small actions that can add<br />

up to making a big difference in the fight<br />

to save and protect our world from a<br />

downward spiraling environmental<br />

disaster. One way to save power that is<br />

very simple, environmentally sound, and<br />

will save you money is to change your<br />

light bulbs!<br />

FACT: The energy used in the average<br />

home can be responsible for more than<br />

twice the greenhouse gas emissions of<br />

the average car. When you use less<br />

energy at home, you reduce greenhouse<br />

gas emissions from power plants and<br />

help protect our environment from the<br />

risks of global climate change.<br />

Many companies produce fluorescent<br />

light bulbs as an alternative to the<br />

traditional incandescent bulbs.<br />

Incandescent bulbs create light by<br />

running electricity through a wire made<br />

of tungsten, which glows. Fluorescent<br />

bulbs contain gases that give off light<br />

when electricity passes through. They<br />

give off less heat than incandescent<br />

bulbs, so less energy is wasted. They fit<br />

into existing sockets, so no changes are<br />

necessary around your home.<br />

Fluorescent bulbs use less than one third<br />

of the energy to provide the same amount<br />

A new study suggests that the so-called<br />

Goldilocks planet is too hot to be like<br />

Earth, but astronomers have uncovered<br />

another, cooler option.<br />

Too Hot Too Cold Or Just Right<br />

What about costs Will they save<br />

money Yes and no. The fluorescent<br />

bulbs may be as much as ten times the<br />

cost of the incandescent bulb. However,<br />

since the fluorescents last up to ten times<br />

as long, the energy savings, and thus cost<br />

savings can be great.<br />

Older fluorescent bulbs come in small<br />

spirals that some are not accustomed to.<br />

The newer fluorescent bulbs come in a<br />

variety of styles or colors and many look<br />

just like the incandescent.<br />

Two things worth noting: 1-The bulbs<br />

contain mercury, so they should be<br />

disposed of at a local household<br />

hazardous waste collection center, just<br />

like batteries. Mercury can harm the<br />

environment if not disposed of properly.<br />

2-The bulbs don’t come in the standard<br />

wattage options, since they take much<br />

less watts to produce the same amount of<br />

light. Usually a comparison scale is on<br />

the package for consumers.<br />

Personally, I changed my home’s bulbs<br />

when I moved in to my home three years<br />

ago. I immediately saw a $20 reduction<br />

in power costs monthly and recouped my<br />

costs in less than a year. I have replaced<br />

only one of these<br />

bulbs during these<br />

three years. To<br />

summarize: overall<br />

less cost, less power<br />

consumption, less<br />

greenhouse gases in<br />

the air, and longer lasting bulbs. What’s<br />

the problem Go get some fluorescent<br />

bulbs and help lead the Earth to a<br />

brighter future!<br />

But What About LEDs<br />

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are even<br />

better in the energy savings department<br />

when it comes to lighting options. They<br />

are even more energy efficient than<br />

fluorescent and do not have the short<br />

delay when activated, like the fluorescent<br />

bulbs. There are even claims that they<br />

last an average of 100,000 hours (about<br />

ten years). LEDs withstand shocks and<br />

vibrations that the incandescent bulbs<br />

can’t handle, as well as temperature<br />

extremes. They even come in a variety<br />

of colors!<br />

Most LEDs out on the market right now<br />

are in control panels, advertising<br />

displays, small indicator lights, vehicle<br />

initial cost. This does turn into<br />

savings in the long run when one<br />

considers not only the energy<br />

used to power a light source, but<br />

the man-hours needed to replace<br />

burned out bulbs. This is an even<br />

greater saving when the LEDs<br />

are placed into fixtures, such as<br />

traffic lights, or hard to access<br />

places such as a traffic light.<br />

In short, LEDs are the future of<br />

our energy efficient lighting.<br />

Scientists and technicians are<br />

working feverishly to produce LED<br />

products than can be used in the home<br />

without danger of fire or damage to the<br />

braking and turn signals, traffic lights,<br />

and small, portable lights, such as<br />

flashlights or keychains. Why don’t we<br />

see them in our homes<br />

The major negative at this time is that<br />

LEDs are not as efficient as fluorescent<br />

lighting. Sure, they use less power, but<br />

they also produce more heat. Granted,<br />

the heat produced is much less than that<br />

of incandescent filament bulbs, and a lot<br />

less than halogens, but when it comes to<br />

home use, heat dissipation is a problem.<br />

Another drawback is the cost. An LED,<br />

while lasting longer, also carries a greater<br />

fixture. In addition, they are striving to<br />

make the LED even more energy<br />

efficient, so that it produces less heat.<br />

Brentwood nudged his friend,<br />

Kevin Duffré, pointing to the Akira<br />

class starship they were heading<br />

towards.<br />

Kevin, who was piloting the shuttle that was<br />

taking his friend to his new ship, the <strong>USS</strong><br />

<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>, shrugged. “If you like that<br />

type of thing. For my money, you can’t go<br />

past the Giant class clipper.”<br />

Kevin and Lars had been friends and rivals<br />

since primary school. Whether it was school<br />

grades or school athletics, they had always<br />

been evenly matched so their games, races<br />

and bets usually ended up a draw.<br />

Even when Lars had joined Starfleet and<br />

Kevin had joined the UFP Merchant Marine,<br />

the merchant ships that kept the Federation’s<br />

economy going, they could still not agree<br />

whose job was better, whose captain was the<br />

toughest or whose ship was better.<br />

“Well, the QE 9 is certainly a pretty ship,<br />

and certainly very luxurious, but I prefer<br />

something with sting that gets you there<br />

fast!”<br />

Oh dear! That did it! It was just like the old<br />

days!<br />

“Fast! That heap of junk couldn’t beat the<br />

QE 9 in a pink fit!”<br />

“Rubbish! You’ve been piloting old clunkers<br />

too long! You’ve no idea what it’s like to be<br />

on a real ship!”<br />

He paused for effect.<br />

"... race me to Starbase 12!"<br />

How to play<br />

Cut out the board and the two players pieces<br />

(you could print them or glue them onto card<br />

to make them more solid). Both players roll a<br />

six-sided dice and the one with the higher<br />

score gets to choose which piece they will<br />

use or whether they will go first. Whichever<br />

they do not choose becomes their opponent's<br />

choice.<br />

Player 1 places their piece on tile 1, the<br />

Unitia Planitia shipyard, in orbit around<br />

Mars, and rolls the dice. The result of the<br />

roll equals the power of your engines. You<br />

need full power - a six - to break out of orbit,<br />

so you have to keep on circling Mars until<br />

you achieve this. Once free of Mars orbit you<br />

return to Earth to pick up the rest of the crew<br />

then, shooting back past Mars, jump to Warp<br />

as you lay in a course for Starbase 12.<br />

The journey is full of dangers and surprises<br />

and when you will land on tiles with special<br />

instructions, you have to follow the<br />

instructions. When you get to Starbase 12,<br />

you have to match its speed and orbit by<br />

throwing a<br />

you started.<br />

be real bad war for that hair to come<br />

down, and it was down and then it was<br />

up and then it was … it was a million<br />
