A Blue Ribbon Year
2010 was an award winning year for St. Giles School. Chosen as one of
304 schools nationwide, the Blue Ribbon Award recognizes high levels of
achievement as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
St. Giles celebrated the honor all year long with special activities for
students and visual reminders of our award. For example, the trees surrounding
the school were wrapped with blue ribbons and every student received a blue
ribbon to wrap a tree at home. The official blue seal of the Award, the mark of
excellence, was used on all communication throughout the year.
The official celebration of our Award took place during Catholic
Schools Week. The national theme, “A+ for America—Catholic Schools,”
reflected the A+ we earned through our Blue Ribbon Award. The ceremony
was held in Church on January 30th, and included testimonials from our pastor,
Fr. Carl, our principal Mrs. Poetzel, the superintendent of Catholic Schools in
the Archdiocese, Sr. Mary Paul McCaughey, and 8th grader Samantha
Puckorius. The ceremony was extra special with performances by the 8 th Grade
Choir moderated by Mrs. Galise and parish music director Sue Kaszynski, and
the Wind Ensemble, conducted by band director Mr. Bob Gloppen. The
celebration reflected the true spirit of St. Giles School.

Did you know
A Netbook Cart, purchased with a generous donation, was a big hit
in the Junior High last year, so a second cart has been purchased
for 4th-6th grade classrooms this year. Thank you again to that
generous donor.
Enrollment capacity has increased this year with the expansion of
our 3-year-old preschool program. To date, 498 students are
enrolled for 2011-2012.
Last year, 8th graders helped write their own play. Students turned
in stories about their St. Giles experiences and it was assembled
into a performance entitled “Trip Down Memory Lane.”

Highlights of a Blue Ribbon Year
LEARNING
Room 102 (1st) undertook a “Flat Stanley” project.
Students made their own Flat Stanley and mailed them
all over the world, asking people to take photos of
Stanley and send them back to the students.
Responding locally were Francis Cardinal George OMI
and IL Governor Pat Quinn, and Stanley was sited in
countries on three continents, including Saudi Arabia,
Senegal and the Philippines.
Sixth graders met Tripod and Dharma, both pit bulls
rescued from illegal dog fighting. Teachers hope that
learning about the plight of such animals teaches the
students to be socially responsible, empathic citizens.
A new after school Robotics Academy (pictured) was
introduced for 4th through 8th graders. About two
dozen students participated in two sessions.
SERVICE
Room 103 (3rd) wrote notes and cards to Tim
Niebauer, a soldier serving in Afghanistan who is
related to Mrs. DeMuro, our school Development
Director.
Room 110 (5th) wrote letters to a WWII veteran Mr.
Cechura, homeroom teacher Mrs. Kufta’s father and a
St. Giles grandfather.
In March, student council organized a fundraiser to
help the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami
in Japan. The successful campaign raised $5,000, enough
to buy nearly three shelter boxes.
The Class of 2012, with help from the Student Council,
raised $1,086 with an out-of uniform day to help former
student Grace Kelly Leon. Grace, who has Hodgkin's
Lymphoma, attended St. Giles until moving with her
family to Indianapolis.
PEACEMAKING
Kindergarten through 6th were entertained by The
Boom Troupe, a program designed to teach problem
solving. The OWN It assembly taught steps for
resolution: Look Within, Accept Your Part, Work to
Make Things Right.
In January, the Junior High participated in a conflict
resolution workshop conduct by staff from The
Marquette Center for Peacemaking.
ACHIEVEMENT
Sports: Boys—Both the 6th and 5th grade boys
basketball teams won first place in the Classic League in
2010-11. Seventh grade boys came in 2nd and 8th grade
boys in 3rd. Girls— The 7th grade girls’ volleyball team
took 1st place in the Classic League.
The 7th grade soccer co-ed soccer team won out over
the 8th for the Classic League championship, and the 7th
grade boys’ volleyball team prevailed over the the 8th
grade for first place.
Long term staff changes: Mrs. Kathy Lofgren, the 7/8 Science teacher since 2003 has accepted the Assistant Principal
position vacated by Mrs. Joyce Willenborg who left to be principal of Our Lady of the Snows. Señora Rosa Lucchesi, who
began teaching extracurricular Spanish in 1989, is leaving the classroom but has plans to start a Cultural Club at St.
Giles. Retiring from St. Giles is Mrs. Flavia Morrissey who was formerly the primary computer/library teacher, and for the
last 6 years has served as our 4th-8th Librarian. Taking over the library will be alumna Mary Fitzpatrick Howorth ’79.

A Blue Ribbon Commitment to the Future of SGS
Thirty six donors earn a Blue Ribbon this year for stepping
forward to be charter members of a new giving society
named for Sr. Marie Imelda, kindergarten teacher
extraordinaire for thirty nine years. The Sister Marie
Imelda Wilson O.P., Giving Society was created to
ensure the fiscal vitality of St. Giles School now and in the
future.
Parents, former parents, alumni and parishioners are
invited to join the Society. With a minimum unrestricted
$1,000 gift, given in one payment or paid as a pledge
throughout the year, members receive special
communication and updates, exclusive invitations and
complimentary tickets, and a small token of appreciation.

PowerSchool online grade system
to grades 4-8; implementation of an
online registration process for
returning families; redesign and
relaunch of our school website
which included teacher web pages;
and the purchase of a Netbook
Cart, loaded with 27 Netbooks for
use in all subjects in the Junior
High. In addition, all of our
teachers now have laptops to use as
a teaching aid in their classrooms,
and Smartboards are now being
used throughout the school, with
one in each grade, 1-8.

Gerald F. Haley Jr. ‘38 lives in
Parkville, Maryland. He helped us
identify some missing alumni from
the 30s.
40’s
Edward Cardinal Egan ‘46 retired
two years ago. He lives in a parish in
Midtown Manhattan and is officially
entitled the Archbishop Emeritus of
New York.
Caroline Goedert Bernero Doyle
‘46 joined her siblings for a trip to
Luxumbourg— to visit their father’s
birthplace —and Ireland.
Sr. Diane Kennedy O.P. ’47 lives in
River Forest and works at
Dominican University as the Vice
President of Mission and Ministry.
50’s
Bill Bromann ‘51 is retired after a
career that included working in
biochemistry in hospitals and the US
Navy. He and his wife Diane
celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary last summer.
Mary Duggan Burke ‘56 and her
husband Joe will celebrate their 50th
anniversary in 2012. They were
married by Mgr. Frawley on Sept.
8th at St. Giles.
90’s
Edward Angarita ’96 returned home
safely to his wife, Michelle McGurn ‘96
and their son Noah, after serving in
Afghanistan.
‘00
Ange (Angelica) Concepcion ’00 got
married in April, 2011, and is working as
the Area Coordinator at Fairfield
University in Connecticut, a Jesuit-run
school. “[I] taught a freshman experience
course for one semester. I’ll be in charge
of a social justice residence hall next year.
I love working with Jesuits!” Ange has a
B.S. in Physics from Loyola ‘08 and a
M.S. Ed. from Northwestern ‘10 in
Higher Education Administration and
Policy.
Both from the class of 2008, Madelin
Aller and Caroline Ketcik were accepted
into the prestigious Peacebuilders
Initiative program at the Catholic
Theological Union. The program
prepares Catholic youth for active
leadership roles in peacemaking,
reconciliation and conflict
transformation.
Ariana Valderrama ‘08 has been awarded
the Frederick Douglass and Susan B.
Anthony Award at Fenwick High
School. The Social Studies department
recognizes one junior who has a strong
academic record, who has demonstrated
an outstanding commitment to social
justice, and who exhibits
leadership and dedication to
community action.

Golden Lion Society
Every year, another class achieves a
milestone: 50 years since graduation from
St. Giles School. The Golden Lion Society
meets annually to catch up with old friends.
The classes celebrating special anniversaries
are more inclined to attend; the classmates
pictured here 1945 celebrated their 65th
reunion at the GLS lunch last year! This
year at the September 4th event, the class of
1961 will be inducted into the Golden Lion
Society.
Our very first graduation class, the class of
1930, graduated eighty years ago!! When a
class celebrates a 75th jubilee, alumni are
invited to the annual event at no charge.
Alumni are always welcome to come and visit. If you call ahead, a
tour can be arranged. You’ll be amazed at how much (and how
little) has changed since you walked the halls as a youngster.

Recognizing Outstanding Students
Ten classrooms were chosen among 100 locally to participate in a
special program, “Remember the Past, Transform the Future” at
the Holocaust Museum in Skokie. The five students selected heard a
presentation from a woman who survived the Bosnian War.
Eighth grade students Susana Volpe and Emily Schreck
participated in the State History Fair in May with a project on
Fair Housing in Oak Park.
Eighth grade student Samantha Puckorius won first place in the
6th-8th grade category after reading her entry in the Ann Arbor
Library Short Story contest in Michigan. Her submission was
judged by ten authors.
Seventh graders Sarah Lewis and Brandon Silva (right) advance
to the State Science Fair in Champaign, IL, after competing at
the Regional level at the Museum of Science and Industry.
