AUGUST 06 The seven-day Galway Summer Festival recorded attendances and betting levels during the week. The bookmakers were reeling after Dermot Weld landed a treble in the first three races on the opening night with all three horses sent off as favourite but the victory of 14/1 chance, P’tit Fute, in the featured G.P.T. Galway (Q.R.) Handicap provided the layers with some relief. Mick Halford’s Quinmaster won the Tote Galway Mile E.B.F. Handicap on Tuesday evening in the colours of Bill Durkan while the biggest race of the week was the William Hill Galway Plate which yielded a very popular success for jockey Roger Loughran who guided Far From Trouble to a memorable triumph, depriving Dermot Weld’s Ansar of a historic third consecutive success. In the Guinness Galway Hurdle the following afternoon Paul Nolan’s Cuan Na Grai made all the running to score convincingly with young Paddy Flood, deputising for the injured Barry Geraghty, on his back giving his trainer a third victory in this fiercely competitive event since 2002. The most popular winner of the week was 14 year old Half Barrell, trained locally by Val O’Brien, in the Galway Blazers Handicap Chase on the Saturday. English raider Bolodenka followed up his earlier course win with a hard fought success under leading rider of the meeting, Declan McDonogh, on the concluding afternoon while Dermot Weld was once again leading trainer. At Goodwood that week, Yeats followed up his impressive victory in the Ascot Gold Cup with an even more impressive display to take the Goodwood Cup while the Nassau Stakes witnessed defeat for Alexander Goldrun as she was just touched off by Ouija Board. For the eighth time in the last nine years, Aidan O’Brien won the Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh when Holy Roman Emperor comfortably defeated Coventry Stakes winner, Hellvelyn. The English raiders dominated the finish of the Phoenix Sprint Stakes as Moss Vale credited Kieren Fallon with a big race double while Mustameet landed his fifth victory of the season in the Royal Whip Stakes over ten furlongs. Seven days later at Leopardstown, Robbie Osborne’s King Jock was a shock 20/1 winner of the Desmond Stakes under Pat Shanahan while Peter Casey’s remarkable handicap duo of Ireland’s Call and Cool Touch, landed their ninth consecutive race between them under Oliver Casey as the pair continued to defy the Handicapper. The big York meeting was a mixed one for the Irish as Dylan Thomas was a disappointing fourth under Michael Kinane in the Juddmonte International Stakes while the testing conditions were all against Con Collins’ Dandy Man in the Nunthorpe Stakes two days later. However, in between these reverses, Alexandrova once again showed her class with a decisive victory in the Yorkshire Oaks, her third Group One victory of the season and the first in this particular event for her handler, Aidan O’Brien. In late August at the Curragh and the English domination of the Tattersalls Ireland Sale Stakes continued when Invincible Force landed this €300,000 event under Fran Berry to ensure the prize went for export for the eleventh consecutive year. On the same day, Jim Bolger’s very promising Teofilo graduated to Group Two company when winning the Futurity Stakes and Aidan O’Brien’s Tusculum proved victorious in the Ballycullen Stakes. Moyglare Stakes Day twenty four hours later was a red letter one for owner Bill Durkan as his homebred, Miss Beatrix, arrived late and fast to snatch this Group One prize under Willie Supple. A third victory in the race for her trainer, Kevin Prendergast, Miss Beatrix was the first leg of a big race double for her owner as half an hour later, Mick Halford’s Quinmaster won the E.B.F. Irish Cambridgeshire Handicap under Johnny Murtagh. English raider Benbaun gained his second consecutive victory in the Flying Five Stakes under Pat Smullen and David Wachman’s Rabatash looked very useful in taking the Go And Go Round Tower Stakes under Wayne Lordan. The five day Tralee Festival brought August to a close and Jim Bolger’s Mrs Gillow showed her battling qualities when landing the Guinness Gold Cup while Kalderon won the Ruby Stakes for trainer Tom Hogan. There was a dramatic outcome to the Denny Gold Medal Handicap Chase when Tony Mullins’ Waltons Mountain, came to grief at the last and it was Bothar Na, trained by his brother, Willie, who proved the fortunate winner under Ruby Walsh.
