JANUARY
Carberry. Backed from 4/1 into 5/2
clear favourite before the off, Dun
Doire came from well off the pace to
collar the front running Coljon and
score by a length and a half. An hour
earlier, Emotional Moment recorded
a second consecutive success in the
Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 3) while Philip
Fenton’s Sher Beau and Noel Meade’s
Leading Run were other impressive
winners on an excellent day’s racing.
After a long spell without
a winner due to sickness
in her yard, trainer Jessica
Harrington saddled 12/1 chance
Studmaster to capture the valuable
Pierse Hurdle at Leopardstown in
the hands of Tommy Treacy. This was
the trainer’s second victory in this
prestigious contest having sent out
Dance Beat to triumph ten years
earlier. On the same afternoon,
Martin Brassil’s Nickname, so
impressive when winning his first
start over fences two weeks earlier,
confirmed the good impression he
created then with another wide
margin victory in the Grade 2 Paddy
Fitzpatrick Memorial Novice Chase,
while the Charlie Swan trained What
A Native made it four wins on the
bounce in the Pierse Leopardstown
Chase under David Casey. Four days
later at Thurles, John Joseph Murphy’s
Newmill ran out a decisive winner
of the Kinloch Brae Chase (Grade 2)
under Robbie Power with favourite
Hi Cloy a disappointing fourth and
on a fine card, Tom Mullins’ Court
Leader took the European Breeders
Fund Mares Novice Chase (Grade 3)
as Climate Control landed the hotly
contested hunters chase.
class racemare was retired having
won 22 races in an excellent career
and Southern Vic followed up his
Leopardstown Christmas victory
with another convincing display in
the Woodlands Park 100 Club Novice
Chase under Conor O’Dwyer. Over at
Haydock, John Queally’s Al Eile landed
the Commhoist Logistics Champion
Hurdle Trial under Timmy Murphy
while five days later a huge crowd
descended on Gowran Park for the
Ellen Construction Thyestes Chase.
Tony Martin’s Dun Doire was listed
as first reserve for this €100,000
contest but got into the race after
John Carr’s Killeaney was found to
be injured and this much improved
performer hit the bookies hard with
a hard fought success under Paul
The AIG Europe Champion Hurdle at
Leopardstown on January 29th was
a most exciting affair and Brave Inca
gained sweet revenge for a narrow
defeat in the race twelve months
earlier when he defeat old rival, Macs
Joy, by a length. Two-time Champion
Hurdler, Hardy Eustace, was a big
disappointment and trailed in last
of the seven runners and the second
Grade One event on the card resulted
in victory for the Willie Mullins
trained Missed That as he landed the
Bailey’s Arkle Perpetual Challenge
Cup under David Casey. Noel Meade’s
Nicanor ran out an effortless winner
of the Golden Cygnet Novice Hurdle
(Grade 3) from Travino and Equus
Maximus was yet another useful
looking bumper performer to emerge
from the Willie Mullins stable as he
made almost all the running to justify
6/4 favouritism in the concluding
bumper event.
Solerina’s victory at Naas in the Cedar
Building Hurdle proved to be her
final racecourse outing as this top
