2 From the President<br />
We have had a very challenging and exciting year at <strong>Mano</strong> A <strong>Mano</strong>. While we saw some of our existing grants<br />
and donations drop significantly or disappear entirely we also were able to obtain new grant dollars to help<br />
expand and update our programs that continue to see the demand for them rise.<br />
With the help of new grant dollars we were able to expand our Health Education and Employment Connection<br />
Programs, and update our existing computer center to become a Community Technology <strong>Center</strong>. We also<br />
opened our new Bright Spaces area at the center where children will be able to discover the “magic of childhood”<br />
in a cozy and comfortable environment. <strong>Mano</strong> A <strong>Mano</strong> also offered a new Police Consultants Program<br />
which enables our clients to discuss community issues with the local police department. This program’s goal<br />
is to help build a bridge between the immigrant community and law enforcement.<br />
Our Executive Director, Carolina Duque, was awarded the “Be Bold Award” by the Women’s Leadership<br />
Council of the United Way of Lake County this past April for her leadership in advancing positive social changes that heightens<br />
the consciousness of her community to those who are less fortunate.<br />
This year saw many new faces join the <strong>Mano</strong> A <strong>Mano</strong> <strong>Resource</strong> <strong>Center</strong> Foundation Board. With the help of all the board members,<br />
staff, and volunteers we were able to help meet the many needs of our clients.<br />
We will have a very busy and challenging year ahead of us again and while we look back on this past year we can be confident<br />
that <strong>Mano</strong> A <strong>Mano</strong> will continue its commitment to meet the ever growing needs of the immigrant community in Lake County.<br />

From the Executive Director<br />
Chicago has historically been a city of immigrants. As far back as the 1840’s, enclaves of Germans and Irish<br />
were identifiable within the city. More recently the area has become a destination for Hispanic families. According<br />
to the American Community Survey, in the Chicago metropolitan area, Latinos make up 19% of the<br />
population (ACS 2005-2007). Moreover, Chicago suburbs have overtaken the city in the number of foreignborn<br />
residents. In Lake County alone, the Latino population grew 41.4% between 2000 and 2007. Immigrant<br />
suburbanization poses great challenges to receiving communities. Census data shows that Latinos in metropolitan<br />
Chicago have low educational achievements. 41.7% have less than a high school diploma, compared<br />
to 15.2% for the total population. Only 3.2% have a graduate or professional degree, compared to 12% of the<br />
total population. 43.5% speak English less than “very well” and 15% live in poverty. (ACS 2005-2007). <strong>Mano</strong><br />
a <strong>Mano</strong> is the one-stop shop for recent immigrants in Lake County. The <strong>Center</strong> continues to expand and meet<br />
the growing need of immigrant families that do not have anywhere else to go when looking for supportive<br />
services. We help immigrants and low income families integrate and become active and more productive members of society.<br />
This year was challenging for <strong>Mano</strong> a <strong>Mano</strong> as for many other not for profits. We saw the reduction of some grants as well as<br />
a decrease in individual donations. Nonetheless, our Gala dinner and Kermes had record attendance and we surpassed our<br />
fundraising goal for the year. <strong>Mano</strong> a <strong>Mano</strong> continues growing thanks to the support of many individuals, foundations, churches,<br />
corporations and local business that believe in what we do and see that our efforts make a positive and lasting impact in the<br />
community.<br />
