About VIT University
Vellore, a historic place in India’s southernmost state Tamil Nadu, has long been known for its magnificent forts
and ancient temples, renowned Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and E.I.D Parry’s factories. The
twenty or more palaces and forts in the district reflect ancient styles and traditions. The most striking of these is
the famous Vellore Fort, built in the 16th century by Chinna Bommi Nayak of Vijayanagar. The Sri Lakshmi
Narayani Temple, a grand "golden temple" constructed recently by the Vellore-based Sri Narayani Peetam
has intricate carvings and sculptures only in gold. The nearby towns Ranipet and Ambur are global industrial
estates with sugar and leather technology industries.
VIT University, well-known for its international standard of
technical education and research facilities is one of the landmarks
of this historic place. Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering
College by Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and
Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu, it was promoted by
the North Arcot Educational and Charitable Trust. The Institute
was conferred "University" status in recognition of its
academic excellence, by the University Grants Commission
(UGC), Government of India, in June 2001. Dr. G. Viswanathan is
the Founder-Chancellor of the institute.
After introducing the traditional engineering subjects, VIT University understood the tremendous impact of
Biotechnology in both teaching and research areas, as a forefront and competitive subject in the International
scenario. Activities in Biotechnology were started in 2001 with both engineering and bioscience components. In
order to strengthen research activities and prepare future R & D personnel to be in the cutting edge at the
world level, CBST was created in 2005, by Dept. of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The
vision of CBST is to prepare young Indian scientists to be competitive in the world market both in their strength
of basic science and practical aspects.
VIT University is fully conscious of the importance of collaborative efforts, both with other academic institutions
as well as with leading industries. MoUs have been signed with leading universities and institutions in USA,
Germany, Australia, UK, Canada, Kenya, Finland, France, Spain, Rwanda, Burundi, Bhutan & Japan as well as
in India, to develop joint courses of international standards, promote research in areas of mutual interest and
facilitate exchange of faculty, students and knowledge based resources.
How to reach VIT University
VIT University is located between two important South
Indian cities Chennai (formerly Madras) and Bangalore
(considered the Silicon Valley of South Asia). Its lush green
campus is spread over 350 acres on the Ranipet-Katpadi
highway, providing an ideal environment for both study and
industrial interaction.
The institute can be reached by train (Katpadi train station
on Chennai - Bangalore line), by road (through the
Chennai-Bangalore highway) or by air. The two airports
close to VIT University are Chennai and Bangalore.
About CBST
The Centre for Bio-Separation Technology was created at
VIT University in 2005 under Prof. M.A. Vijayalakshmi as part of
"Intensification of Research in High priority Areas" programme funded
by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
She was identified by the Indian Government to come back from
France after more than 30 years of service at Universite de Technologie
Compiegne (UTC), France, to steer this prestigious centre. This Centre is
projected by DST as a 'National Facility' for R&D and training, and
caters to postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The
Centre which is autonomous, is monitored by a steering committee
composed of eminent Scientists both from India and abroad along
with the top management of VIT University. At present the centre
has seven scientists and more than 25 research students.
