DRAWING Gallery Activity - 45 minutes AIM: To study structure and composition in painting. SKILLS: § Develops understanding of structure and composition. § Explores different drawing techniques and styles. § Draws attention to use of line in painting. RESOURCES: Paper; coloured pencils; rubber; pencil sharpener. STEP-BY-STEP: 1. Divide the class into small groups (maximum of 4). 2. Ask the groups to find a painting they like and to sit in front of it so they can all see it clearly. 3. Ask each child to draw the outlines of the shapes they see in the painting, reminding them not to press too hard with their pencil at first. 4. These guidelines will help the child to fill in the details and complete the drawing. 5. In the same groups, discuss the differences and similarities between each drawing. MEMORY GAME Gallery Activity - 20 minutes AIM: To explore the importance of first impressions and develop skills of observation and memory. SKILLS: § Improves observation skills. § Develops child’s ability to notice and mentally record details. § Encourages a broad-minded attitude towards looking at art. STEP-BY-STEP: 1. Choose a piece of art work to look at with your group. 2. Ask the children to look closely at the painting suggesting things to consider (see Ideas for looking at paintings). 3. After a short time ask the children to turn their backs to the work. 4. Going round the group, ask each child to describe one thing he/she remembers about the painting. 5. Ask the children to turn around and face the painting again. As a group, discuss all the things they hadn’t noticed or mentioned before.
