The Citizen Organis<strong>in</strong>g Foundation (COF) is a multi-faith alliance with affiliates throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> country which aims to help people <strong>in</strong> localities to comb<strong>in</strong>e to effect <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

communities by <strong>the</strong>ir own actions. Their ‘Iron Rule’ is ‘never to do <strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs what <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

do <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves’. TELCO (The East London Communities Organisation) is especially<br />

active both with<strong>in</strong> <strong>schools</strong> <strong>and</strong> between <strong>schools</strong> <strong>and</strong> local communities. The COF provides<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> teachers <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> community activists. [Citizen Organis<strong>in</strong>g Foundation,<br />

Dynamix is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most experienced <strong>of</strong> several travell<strong>in</strong>g per<strong>for</strong>mance groups who <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

role-play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities <strong>for</strong> <strong>schools</strong>. They <strong>of</strong>fer work such as Anti-Bully<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Strategies (<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council <strong>for</strong> Voluntary Services), participation (<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Local Government<br />

In<strong>for</strong>mation Service), <strong>the</strong> UN Convention on <strong>the</strong> Rights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Child (<strong>for</strong> Save <strong>the</strong> Children),<br />

Changemakers is a partnership <strong>of</strong> organisations who help young people between eleven <strong>and</strong><br />

twenty-five to get toge<strong>the</strong>r to set up <strong>the</strong>ir own projects to achieve positive benefits <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir communities. Their book Young People Shar<strong>in</strong>g Their Future gives an<br />

account <strong>of</strong> activities all over <strong>the</strong> country. Currently <strong>the</strong>y have a DfEE grant to pilot a model<br />

<strong>for</strong> activities to provide young people with skills <strong>and</strong> experience <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> work.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>ktank DEMOS, <strong>the</strong>y are organis<strong>in</strong>g a series <strong>of</strong> regional sem<strong>in</strong>ars.<br />

<strong>Education</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Partnerships (EBPs) is a network with 147 affiliates <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Wales<br />

<strong>and</strong> 18 <strong>in</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Irel<strong>and</strong>, supported by BT <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> DfEE. They try to provide <strong>in</strong> LEA<br />

areas a s<strong>in</strong>gle po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> contact <strong>for</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> <strong>schools</strong> to improve pupils underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> read<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> work. Generally <strong>the</strong>y see <strong>the</strong>ir work as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>citizenship</strong>.<br />

Some groups have developed well-structured <strong>and</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ative role-play<strong>in</strong>g scenarios <strong>for</strong><br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> governments <strong>and</strong> economies <strong>of</strong> imag<strong>in</strong>ary societies, such as <strong>the</strong> ‘Micro Society’<br />

programme from <strong>the</strong> Merton <strong>Education</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Partnership (Phoenix College, Morden).<br />

We saw classes at Park House Middle School, Wimbledon School mak<strong>in</strong>g good use this.<br />
