English Assessment<br />

All incoming students will take an English assessment test at<br />

<strong>Advising</strong> & <strong>Registration</strong>, consisting of a grammar section and a<br />

written essay to assess grammatical knowledge, writing ability<br />

and readiness for freshman composition (ENG 111). Results are<br />

evaluated in conjunction with SAT/ACT scores.<br />

Foreign Language Placement<br />

<strong>Meredith</strong> <strong>College</strong> believes that a well-educated woman should be a<br />

competent communicator in at least one foreign language. The faculty<br />

of <strong>Meredith</strong> requires foreign language study through the third<br />

semester (205) level. We encourage you to build on the knowledge<br />

you’ve begun in high school by taking courses early in your college<br />

career. If you studied French or Spanish, an assessment of your<br />

skill level during <strong>Advising</strong> & <strong>Registration</strong> or Orientation will help<br />

us place you in the level most appropriate for you—or may indicate<br />

that you have already met the general education requirement in<br />

foreign language. If you studied a language other than Spanish or<br />

French and would like to continue, please consult the department<br />

head in Foreign Languages and Literatures, Dr. Kevin Hunt, (919)<br />

Mathematics Placement<br />

Students are required to take a course to build knowledge and<br />

skills in Data Analysis, Abstract Reasoning and Problem Solving:<br />

either MAT 245, Statistics; or MAT 211, Calculus. There is an<br />

additional General Education elective which could be filled with<br />

a second math course.<br />

MAT 245, Statistics I MAT 245 has no prerequisite.<br />

MAT 211, Calculus I The prerequisite for MAT 211, Calculus I,<br />

is one of the following:<br />

• MAT 144 (Functions and Graphs)<br />

• MAT 141 (<strong>College</strong> Algebra) and MAT 143 (Trigonometry)<br />

• Permission of the math department<br />

Please use the chart below when determining placement if you<br />

intend to take MAT 211.<br />
