A Letter from
the President
Spelman College is poised on the dawn of a new era. We are on course in measuring
up to our mission – to achieve excellence in liberal arts education; to
develop the total person; to empower our students; and to develop women to
serve. Like our sisters at the end of the 19th century, we have high expectations
as we enter the 21st century. Just as they could not imagine the scale
of development that has occurred over the last 100 years, we can hardly imagine
what progress awaits us in the decades to come. However, we are empowered
by our storied legacy of academic excellence and commitment to
developing leaders who serve.
It is our privilege to present the 1998-99 Annual Report. We have chronicled
our successes and have identified the challenges we will face during this
extraordinary period in world history–the beginning of a new millennium.
We are proud to have you as shareholders in our mission of developing the
intellectual potential of women. We deeply appreciate your investment in our
vision and our end product: the Spelman graduate. Without your support, the
journey would be impossible.
We start from a position of strength academically, administratively and fiscally.
Our campus is undergoing construction and renovations that will
enhance scientific inquiry and improve student health care. Our nearly 2,000
students are the best and the brightest young African American women in the
nation and the faculty continues to demonstrate outstanding commitment,
dedication and scholarship. We have a talented, hard-working staff that
remains committed to supporting the daily activities of the College.
The Annual Report details the progress the College has made in the areas
of strategic planning, growth and expansion, strengthening institutional infrastructure,
improving the quality of life for our students and empowering our
alumnae.
The Spelman Strategic Plan process identified four major initiatives for
the future of the College; it is currently being finalized. We have initiated a
Strategic Plan for Technology and a Master Plan which will address the
physical plant and new facilities. Our self-study, a requisite for our regional
accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS),
is in process. And finally, the new Science Center construction and the
McVicar Hall renovation have proceeded in a timely manner.
Our vision for Spelman’s future embraces the College’s neighboring communities.
We are very excited about this progress as we continue to form
partnerships through community outreach. We know our survival and
growth as an institution are inextricably linked to the health and well being
of the community in which we live and work. In fact, towards this end, the
College coordinated the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Community Urban
Summit, which was held on June 4-5, 1999. The Summit brought together
more than 200 committed and enthusiastic residents, faculty, staff, students,
and alumni from the AUC to discuss partnership opportunities for improving
the quality of life for the residents and for revitalizing our neighborhoods.
Indeed, this inaugural year has been exciting, rigorous and rewarding.
On October 31, 1998, when I accepted the charge, issued by our Board of
Trustees Chair, Dr. June Hopps, I promised to serve, to love, to transform and
take Spelman College to new heights of excellence. I invite you again to join
me in this effort, for this awesome challenge is a shared responsibility. As we
face the new century, we must continue to plan and prepare the College to
enter a new millennium with her course firmly set toward a bright and prosperous
future. With your continued support, we will measure up to our mission.
Sincerely,
Audrey F. Manley, C’55
The Spelman
Strategic Plan
The Spelman College Strategic Plan: A Blueprint for the Future is being
designed to provide direction for the future of the College while maintaining
the character that has long defined it as one of the nation’s finest institutions
of higher learning. Built upon the strengths and accomplishments of our past
and present, this plan will articulate a vision for Spelman that will have far
reaching impact well into this 21st century. The Strategic Plan is being organized
around the following initiatives:
• institutional mission and the learning environment
As we formulated our planning process, we revisited our mission and institutional
identity to measure how our future should be aligned with our past. We
knew that in order to move forward, we must have a realistic understanding of
our institutional identity and how it affected the way we do business. We also
determined that we must take new approaches to delivering instruction to
today’s young women in an extremely competitive academic environment.
• technology
Technology has already revolutionized the educational process at Spelman
College. Over a decade ago, the College invested in upgrading its systems
through the introduction of computers. Faculty, students, administration and
staff have been provided access to on-line capabilities. Spelman has completed
year four of a major computer conversion to enhance technology infrastructure.
The next step is the development of a strategic plan for technology.
4

• infrastructure
Since infrastructure is the basic foundation upon which Spelman rests and
which supports the College’s mission, the Spelman College Strategic Plan
will provide direction for the development, management and maintenance of
the infrastructure. One of the major reasons students choose to attend a
college or university is the physical facilities/campus aesthetics. To remain a
major competitor among the top liberal arts institutions in the country,
Spelman College initiated a master planning process to align our academic
and infrastructure goals.
• community partnerships
The mission of the College has been to educate women who serve. As the
21st century unfolds, Spelman’s location in southwest Atlanta provides
untold opportunities to demonstrate its abilities to respond to the social and
economic challenges in the area. These solutions can serve as models to
resolve national and international problems in society.
Our action plan to partner with the community began with the historic
Atlanta University Center (AUC) Community Urban Summit, held June, 1999.
The Summit was funded by grants from the Kellogg Foundation, Chase
Manhattan Foundation, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and The Johnnetta B.
Cole Institute for Community Building. During the event, more than 200
participants recommended strategies for building a strong partnership between
the colleges and neighboring communities. Dr. Pauline Drake, our Dean of
Continuing Education, led discussions for the College’s participation in
community revitalization and partnership. One of the key areas identified in
community meetings was economic development, which includes reducing
community unemployment, increasing community entrepreneurship and
enhancing employment skills. The other areas of concern pointed to issues
surrounding pre K-12 education, communication and public safety.
The partnership between Spelman/AUC and our neighbors will increase
interaction and connection between our faculty, students and area residents.
This partnership will be a natural link between college class work and life in
the world into which our students will graduate. The activities will also
inform our strategic plan as we look to the 21st century to strengthen our
community partnership.
Measuring Up
to Excellence
SPELMAN
pelman College has again surpassed many of the nation’s prestigious
universities and Ivy League colleges by soaring to the top
of Black Enterprise magazine’s list of top 50 colleges to
achieve the No. 1 ranking in the magazine’s January 1999 issue.
“It’s great news for us. We’re very pleased and very proud that Black
Enterprise has validated what we at Spelman have long believed. It
also underscores the role historically black colleges and universities
have in providing opportunities for African American students,” said
Spelman President, Audrey Forbes Manley.
Black Enterprise’s cover story revealed the best colleges and
universities in America for African Americans based on research
conducted for the magazine by Dr. Thomas LaVeist, CEO of
DayStar Research and associate professor at John Hopkins University.
Spelman was ranked at the top of the listing above Harvard
University, Duke University, Yale University as well as
many other distinguished institutions.
LaVeist conducted his research for the listing by consulting
1,077 African American higher education professionals. The
professionals were asked to rate the colleges by the academic
and social environments that are provided for African American
students. The questionnaire results, in addition to data
on black enrollment and graduation rates, were run
through a weighted formula to produce the ratings.
Miss Spelman College 1998-99, Nabalungi Mack-
Williams, was featured on the cover of Black Enterprise
magazine smiling proudly atop a pyramid of
student representatives from other schools whose college’s
also appeared on the listing. “I am proud to be a
graduate of an institution that is repeatedly recognized
for its outstanding efforts to educate young African
American women in the liberal arts,” said Mack-
Williams. Spelman was recognized last year as one of
the nation’s top five best buys in the country in Money
magazine’s 1998 college guide.
In today’s competitive environment, standards have been set to determine top
colleges – motivated and talented students, challenging curricula and strong faculty.
This year, Black Enterprise magazine recognized Spelman, as No. 1 among
the list of top 50 prestigious and Ivy League colleges. This selection affirmed
what Spelman has always believed – that it is a college that provides the optimum
academic and social environments for African American women.
During this academic year, an environment of high student morale and constant
attention to the details of academic rigor have prevailed on the campus.
Students have taken advantage of a variety of academic experiences and activities
on campus and throughout the global community. The Domestic Exchange
Program was vibrant with 24 Spelman women studying at 10 exchange affiliate
institutions. In turn, Spelman hosted 25 students from such institutions as
Barnard, Occidental, Smith, Wellesley Colleges and Stanford University. Students
also studied abroad, and faculty participated in exchanges with Dartmouth
and Middlebury Colleges.
Two Spelman graduates received Fulbright Scholarships. Asha Williams, a
Chicago Heights native and sociology major, who also speaks fluent German,
will study refugee settlements in Frankfurt, Germany during the fall semester
of 1999. Another sociology major who speaks fluent Spanish – Rachelle James
from Savannah – will research the impact of race on the economic experiences
of Afro-Costa Rican business owners in February 2000.
The 1999 Watson Fellow, Miguela Gonzalez, a chemistry major, will conduct
independent research to document the oral traditions of African music in
Ghana, Gambia and Senegal. A native of Trinidad, Ms. Gonzalez was president
of Spelman’s International Students Organization and was among 50
students placed in the Study Abroad Program. Students studied in Chile,
the Dominican Republic, Italy, France, England, South Africa, Senegal,
Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, China and Zimbabwe.
Some of our most enthusiastic and tireless students welcomed research
and internship opportunities during the summer months. Spelman
women were among the ranks of White House and State Department
interns. They represented the College as NASA, Panasonic, Kimberly-
Clark, Chase, DuPont and Amgen interns to name a few. They competed
and received Merck/UNCF, Mellon, Morris Udall and Woodrow Wilson summer
fellowships. Students also participated in summer research activities on various
campuses, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Howard,
Syracuse, Princeton, Duke, Purdue and The University of Pennsylvania.
S UMMER / FALL 1999 6

These various opportunities for students to study away from campus underscore
the competitiveness and strength of the College’s academic program.
They also motivate us to make traditional programs relevant for today’s societal
needs. For example, the English Department revised its major program of study
by initiating three tracks of study in African American and U.S. Literature;
British Literature; and Gender Studies, Critical Theory, and International Literature.
Also, seven students were accepted into the Environmental Science
major, an interdisciplinary curriculum developed by the faculty and implemented
in the fall semester.
Freshman engineering courses were added to the curriculum by Dr. Leonard
Lay, the new Coordinator of the Dual Degree Engineering Program. A course in
Engineering Graphics using AutoCAD was piloted in the spring semester and
the Mathematics Electronic Classroom was upgraded with new computers to
accommodate AudoCAD. This program is funded by the Model Institutions for
Excellence (MIE) grant.
Three new special programs in the sciences were initiated. The Program in
Physical Sciences (PIPS), funded by the Office of Naval Research ($2.3 million),
provided enrichment activities in the Physics and Chemistry Programs and
scholarships for students. The Scholars in Mathematics Program, funded by the
National Security Agency ($450,000), provided an enhanced curriculum, scholarships
and special student enrichment for mathematics majors. Funded by the
National Science Foundation (NSF), the Summer EDGE Program, in collaboration
with Bryn Mawr College, offered special bridge activities for students
preparing for graduate studies in mathematics.
During this academic year, Spelman completed articulation agreements with
five prestigious institutions to expand the experiential training of students in
various areas of studies. The partnerships in the Dual Degree Program in Engineering
were increased to 12 by adding Columbia University and the University
of Florida. Spelman also entered into agreements for the Minority Graduate
Education Programs with Georgia Institute of Technology and Howard University.
And finally, as a result of an articulation agreement, students and faculty
will engage in research and teaching through opportunities with Columbia University
and Biosphere 2 in Arizona.
We also continued to enhance our tradition and esteemed reputation in the
arts. During the fall of 1998, the Museum of Fine Art sponsored an exhibition,
Divergent Journeys/Aesthetic Convergence, featuring the works of four faculty
members. A highlight of the 1999 spring semester was the show, Lois Mailou
Jones and Her Former Students: Seven Decades of American Art.
Grants from the
Mellon Foundation
and the Lilly
Endowment have
stimulated a plethora
of exciting activities
surrounding new
approaches to teaching
and learning, including
an explosion of
web-based courses.
8
The First-Year Orientation, Sophomore Assembly and Sisters Chapel Services
were revitalized and restructured under the leadership of Dr. Marshalita Peterson,
Chair of the Education Department, and Dr. Norman Rates, Dean of the Chapel.
Important topics shared by renowned speakers focused on the theme of the year,
Women as Citizens of the World: Demonstrating Vision, Integrity, Values and
Involvement. A team of faculty, under the direction of Dr. Peterson, developed
a textbook for the First-Year Orientation that is focused on Spelman College.
The book will be piloted with the freshman class during the 1999 fall semester.
During the Inauguration week of activities, the faculty presented the Inaugural
Symposium, New Women, New Worlds, on Oct. 30, 1998. The symposium
provided a public forum in which scholars, community activists, students, public
policy makers and members of the business community engaged in dialogue
about a broad range of issues confronting America, particularly as they affect
black women in the United States and throughout the world. Noted participants
included U.S. Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton and Dr. Bernice Johnson
Reagon, C’70, vocalist, author, composer and cultural historian.
Grants from the Mellon Foundation and the Lilly Endowment have stimulated
a plethora of exciting activities surrounding new approaches to teaching and
learning, including an explosion of web-based courses. We are also maintaining
our competitive edge with multimedia technologies playing an increasingly
supportive role in creative teaching strategies.
Our tradition of possessing the finest faculty ever continued to be demonstrated
as they engaged in creative scholarship, including publication of books
and journal articles, and the production of artistic exhibitions and performances.
Dr. Arturo Lindsay, associate professor of art and art history, made history by
organizing the first international multi-disciplinary bilingual symposium to
address the presence of black Christ figures and statues found throughout the
Americas. Dr. Lindsay also received a Fulbright Fellowship for a project in South
America while Dr. Victor Ibeanusi, associate professor of biology and environmental
science, received a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Germany.
Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Director of the Women’s Resources and Research
Center, completed her tenure as a Pew Scholar. For the 1999-2000 academic year
the Pew Scholarship was awarded to Dr. Mona Phillips, assistant professor
of sociology.
Other highlights of the 1998-99 school year included the following:
Preparing
Servant Leaders
D
uring this academic year, the Division of Student Affairs enhanced the quality
of services designed to help students reach their academic goals with an
emphasis on community service and leadership. In an attempt to evaluate the
strength of our student involvement in the community, we conducted a
campus-wide audit of community service placements. This information will
be helpful as we strengthen Spelman’s partnership with the community.
The Office of Community Service placed students in more than 93 service
sites and supported the development of two new service learning courses, one
in anthropology and the other in foreign languages. The anthropology course
was linked to the collection of oral history from residents of the Washington
Park Community and the John O. Chiles Senior High Rise. The special
language course, designed by Dr. Frederick Langhorst, was used to train
interpreters for Spanish-speaking patients at Grady Hospital and students
at Anderson Park Elementary School.
We also sponsored four students – LaTina Emerson, Ifeoma Nnaji, Erin
Spearman and Kia Barosy – for the 1999 Leadershape Institute in Champaign,
Ill. Leadershape is a six-day premier leadership development program
designed to assist in identifying the leadership potential of students. In addition,
Spelman sponsored 11 students to attend the National Black Leadership
Conference in Richmond, Virginia. Students representing various organizations
and classifications attended the three-day conference, which
featured noted keynote speakers and workshops on leadership
development.
Other significant accomplishments in Student Affairs during
1998-99 were:
• Residential Services sponsored a series of activities and programs
– “Raising the Standard” – to build community while
providing extra-curricula learning opportunities for campus
residents. Topics included interpersonal relationships, interviewing
skills and stress and time management.
• Ms. Felicia Smith was hired as Director of the Bonner
Scholars Program. The addition of Ms. Smith has already
shown signs of strengthening the program because there were
80 Bonner Scholars involved in community service.
• The Office of Career Planning and Development conducted thirteen
workshops and seminars to prepare students for their profes-
10

sional goals. The Shangazi Program, designed in cooperation
with the Spelman Corporate Women’s Roundtable, placed six
students with members of the Roundtable and other top
women executives during spring break. The program gave
participating students, who shadowed the executives, an
opportunity to experience life in corporate America.
• The Shepherd Poverty Alliance provided six Spelman students
opportunities to serve an eight-week internship with agencies that
serve economically disadvantaged populations in rural and urban areas.
The Alliance is a collaboration between Spelman, Berea and Morehouse
Colleges, and Washington and Lee University.
• Ten students participated in the UPS Scholars Program, which is designed
to improve reading and math skills for students at Fickett and Dean Rusk
Elementary Schools.
• During the Inaugural Community Action Day, the Office of Community
Service coordinated a “clean up day” in the West End district. The Department
of Health Services conducted a Community Health Fair at the West
End Mall where more than 500 community residents took advantage of
free health screenings and health information.
• The Department also provided self-breast exams training for the freshman
class; facilitated blood drives sponsored by Life South; and presented information
to the student body on women’s health issues.
• In commemoration of World AIDS Day, the Department of Health Services
collaborated with the American Red Cross to provide African American
HIV/AIDS training.
• Counseling Services developed partnerships and collaborated with 21 social
service agencies to continue sensitivity training of mental health professionals
who work with our students and the community. The Division also
designed and presented a series of psycho-educational workshops on topics
ranging from mental health education and diversity to depression/anxiety
and male/female relationships.
• The Office of Disability Services hosted a regional workshop with the
Disability Access Institute in November 1998. The keynote speaker was
Salome Heyward, a leading legal expert on disability and higher education.
• Public Safety continued to promote innovative programs such as Fight Back,
P.O.S.S.E. (Protecting Our Spelman Students Everyday) and Adopt-A-Dorm
to provide students with optimum levels of personal security.
11

The Business
of Giving
The Inauguration of President Manley, our “True Blue President,” was the
largest stewardship program the College has undertaken. It involved all
constituents of the College and provided increased outreach to the surrounding
community. In recognition of the impact and creativity of the
Inauguration, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education
(CASE) selected Spelman from 144 other institutions to receive its Gold
Award for the most unique inauguration.
In an effort to build the level of financial support, Spelman relied heavily
upon the support of alumnae, Trustees, Corporate Partners, friends,
foundations, federal agencies, organizations and our own faculty and staff.
At fiscal year-end, the Division of Institutional Advancement reported
gifts and grants totaling $12,926,953, with $6,764,690 in private gifts and
$6,152,263 in federal grants.
The College’s fundraising priorities included the Science Center and
Sisters Chapel. The division raised more than $4.2 million toward the
$7.8 million shortfall for the Science Center and developed the plan for
Phase II: Revival of the Spirit, the Campaign to raise the $2.6 million
needed to preserve and renovate Sisters Chapel.
The Office of Alumnae Affairs honored 10 alumnae with the 1999 Alumnae
Achievement Award: Tina McElroy Ansa, C’71, Marie Thomas Foster,
C’63, Harriet Mitchell Murphy, C’49, Terry Cornwell Rumsey, C’75, Frieda
Williamson Morris, C’66, Ruth Scott Simmons, C’37, Margaret Carol Lee,
C’76, Isa Patterson Williams, C’71, Virginia Davis Floyd, C’73 and Lela
Lewis, C’75.
12

The College formulated a partnership agreement
with the National Alumnae Association of Spelman
College that involved individual and chapter leadership
development and increased giving for college priorities.
Other Division highlights:
• Secured $1 million in scholarships and capital improvement
support from the Eli Lilly/UNCF Historically Black Colleges and
Universities Endowment Fund.
• Achieved a record high in Trustee giving at 82.6 percent, with full
anticipation of 100 percent participation in 1999-00.
• Recorded a continued increase in alumnae giving, with a year-end high of
$724,133.
• Reported a growth in net assets generated for the Planning Giving Program
over five years totaling $953,793 .
• Challenged individual alumnae giving for renovation of Sisters Chapel with
a $250,000 challenge grant.
• Presented the Founders Spirit Award to Isabella McIntyre Tobin, C’45.
• Collaborated with two alumnae, Dr. Fleda Mask Jackson, C’73 and Dr.
Mona T. Phillips, C’76 to present “Calming the Waters, Holding Back the
Storm: A Conference on Stress, Reproductive Health, and Health Promotion
among African American Women.”
We closed the end of the 20th century with our tradition of financial growth
intact and a 30-year tradition of balanced budgets. We are undergoing construction
and renovations that will expand scientific inquiry and enhance
student healthcare services. Inspired by our growth, Spelman will step into
A Legacy
of Growth
the 21st century with a gross value of its physical plant at $82,902,908 and
net value after appreciation of $59,798,293.
The most obvious sign of development on the campus is the construction
of the new $30.8 million Science Center with phase I due to be completed in
May 2000. The renovation of Tapley Hall is scheduled for completion in
early 2001. We are also renovating 9,000 square feet of existing space in
MacVicar Hall which will house our Health Services and Counseling Services
Departments.
Other division highlights of Business and Financial Affairs included:
• Closed on several land acquisition projects near the campus
• Appointed Roger Bruce as Director of Human Resources. A Morehouse
graduate, Mr. Bruce returned to the AUC from industry
• Increased net assets of the College over the past five years by $69.4 million
– from $172,427,055 to $241,818,048
• Increased the endowment by $57 million in five years, totaling $187 million
• Achieved a five percent default rate on student loans and joined the U.S.
Department of Education’s Honor Roll of institutions in compliance of Y2K
testing on financial aid systems
Your generous investments in Spelman College have helped to create excellence
in every aspect of the Institution. Spelman College has long served as a
national treasure for educating African American women who lead and serve
in every corner of the world. We continue to rank among the very best small
A Message from
the 1998-99
Annual Fund
Chair
private liberal arts colleges in the country. All of this would not be possible
without your generosity, particularly to the Annual Fund.
The Annual Fund continues to make great strides. At the close of the fiscal
year, the Annual Fund exceeded its goal of $4 million to raise $4,297,695.
We are extremely grateful for the invaluable support received by all of our
constituencies in this endeavor.
Our Campaign chairs and telefund students worked diligently to reach
the goal. We contacted alumnae by telephone and mail and in turn you
responded with a record high of $724,133. The Parents Campaign, led by
Marcella and Terry Jones, exceeded its goal by 110 percent, and already they
are excited about possibilities for next year. Of course, our faculty and staff
could not go unrecognized. Their effort, led by Co-Chairs, Dr. Sylvia Bozeman,
Associate Provost for Science and Mathematics, and Mr. Robert D. Flanigan,
Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs and Treasurer, achieved a 41
percent participation rate – a 260 percent increase over 1997-98.
It has been a great year for the Annual Fund and it has been my pleasure to
serve my alma mater for the past two years as the National Chair of the
Annual Fund. As I close the year, I congratulate the new Chair, my Spelman
sister, Dr. Aurelia Robinson, C’43, who I know will continue to achieve even
greater heights for the Annual Fund.
Sincerely,
Rose Harris Johnson
