General Information 

“The Draw” is a resident-only randomized registration process. All registration 

forms submitted for “The Draw” will be processed in random order. Confirmation 

and receipt will be mailed within 5 business days. 

• Remember to sign the waiver and include credit card information or a check. 

• Seal registration forms in an envelope and write “The Draw” on the outside. 

Drop off envelope at one of the community centers listed below – envelopes 

must be received by Thursday, February 7th before 5:30pm. 

• Clearly indicate alternatives on the summer camp registration form. Duplicate 

forms will be disqualified. 

• All first-time registrants or current customers who have a new Palo Alto 

address must submit proof of residency with registration form. Examples 

include a utility bill, driver’s license, lease agreement, etc. 

• Staff will begin processing forms on February 8th. Forms will not be accepted 

on that day.

Tips for online registration success: 

• Request a User ID and Password at any community center or by sending an 

email to enjoyonline@cityofpaloalto.org at least one week before registration 

begins. 

• Visit the website and become familiar with Enjoy Online before registration 

begins. 

• Enjoy Online registration opens at 8:30am on the first day of registration, 

and then is conveniently available 24/7. Please be sure to register prior to the 

course start date. 

Bring the completed registration form to one of the community centers listed 

below. 

• Registration forms are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, and 

customers who prefer to wait in line will receive confirmation and receipt at 

that time. 

• Confirmation and receipt will be mailed within 5 business days for customers 

who prefer to drop off registration forms.

a refund. Withdrawals received less than 4 weeks prior to the start date will not receive a refund. As with our regular 

withdrawal fee, the customer will have the option to receive the entire camp fee credit on their account, or pay a $15 

processing fee per camp, per child, for a refund. Refunds for camps that have been cancelled by the City are always 

100% refundable. 

TRANSFERS: Families will have until 12 noon on the Friday prior to the first day of camp to transfer to another 

program. Transfers are always subject to space availability and the customer is responsible for any additional program 

fees.

Palo Alto Children’s Theatre exists to nurture the intellectual, 

artistic and personal development of children and youth 

through multi-arts education, performing opportunities and 

extraordinary theatre experiences. We believe process and 

product are of equal importance and aim to create excellent 

theatre for young audiences. Through multi-arts education, 

Children’s Theatre develops life skills such as critical and 

creative thinking, cooperation, and aesthetic sensitivity. 

A theatre and a school, Children’s Theatre provides classes 

and programming designed to further learning experiences 

for children and youth. This invaluable teaching tool develops 

skills and provides a unique opportunity to augment our 

participants’ theatrical knowledge. All participants must be 

the stated age by the first class. Classes may be repeated.

This unique camp provides a wonderful introduction to 

theatre for young children through the use of creative drama, 

movement and games by focusing on their natural sense of 

play. The aim of the camp is to encourage inventiveness and 

originality. Each week is theme-based and may be repeated.

Camp Sneak Preview 

The Bay Area’s finest musical theatre professionals teach 

kids how to sing, act, and dance! Students focus on collaboration, 

choreography, and acting. They also learn about 

the various aspects of technical theatre, such as building, 

painting, costumes, and make-up. This adventurous program 

explores theatre through collective creation, story development 

and improvisation. Guided by their teachers, students 

share their creativity with parents and friends on the final

Summer Theatre Academy – 

Three-week session 

An action-packed theatre day camp taught by working theatre 

professionals. Each morning, campers rotate between 

music, dance, drama and at least one technical theatre class. 

In the afternoon, the campers create unique performance 

pieces. Guided by their teachers, students share their work 

in performances that take place on the Saturday and Sunday 

after camp concludes at 2pm. Participants may register for 

one or both sessions and are accepted on a first come basis. 

Participants should bring a bag lunch. 

Please note, audition for placement will take place on first

Private Vocal 

Singers age 12- 18 can benefit enormously from this one-on-one 

instruction time with trained opera singer Patricia Urbano. Learn 

techniques for everything from classical to musical theatre to 

contemporary pop singing. This all encompassing workshop is 

great for students preparing for an audition, perfecting songs 

for a performance, or for those just wishing to strengthen their 

singing voice. Please call the Children’s Theatre for an appointment

From Storyboard to Screen 

Workshop for middle school and high school students. Students 

will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking with introductions to 

screenwriting, directing techniques, production, and cinematography. 

By mid-session, students will begin production of a short 

film. The class will end with an introduction to post-production 

classes in editing. Students may take multiple sessions.

Teen Theatre Lab – 

Two-week session 

Teen Theatre Lab is an acting practicum taught by working

Presented by the Palo Alto Art Center for kinders, kids 

and teens. Week-long, morning, afternoon, and all-day 

concentrated art workshops with a wide variety of themes, 

subjects, techniques and materials, taught by outstanding 

artists and art educators at the Palo Alto Art Center, Cubberley 

Community Center, and the Mid-Peninsula Media Center. 

Free lunch supervision provided at the Palo Alto Art Center 

for children who attend morning and afternoon camps. 

Note: Transportation is NOT provided by the Palo Alto Art 

Center to any of our off-site locations. 

Please bring a lunch and clothes suitable for working with 

paint and glue.

Drop by the Palo Alto Art Center any Friday afternoon this 

summer and work on your own art projects. Take time to 

develop your portfolio and utilize the Art Center’s state of the 

art equipment and professional art materials. Art Center staff 

and artists from the Cubberley Artist studios will be available 

each week for mentoring and supervision.

Ceramics: Raku Intensive 

Discover the magic of Raku, an ancient Japanese firing process. 

This is a low fire process where ceramic objects are fast 

fired, removed hot from the kiln and placed in a container with 

combustible materials. In this reduction atmosphere, pots 

attain lustrous multi-colored glaze effects. We’ll make several 

items using hand-built and extruder techniques, as well as the 

potter’s wheels, and Raku glaze our artwork twice during the

Behind the Scenes at the 

Museum (Full Day Workshop) 

Gain firsthand experience in curating and designing an 

exhibition for the Palo Alto Art Center! Working closely 

with the Palo Alto Art Center’s staff, including the curator, 

installation crew, and the Art Center’s director, this class 

will follow the steps in curating a show from start to finish. 

Be a part of a blind jury process and select artworks for 

the exhibition, write label copy, hang the artwork in the Art 

Center’s meeting room, and promote the exhibition. This is a 

great workshop for anyone interested in art and/or working

Summer Camps 7

Exploring Palo Alto through 

Digital Photography, Section 1 

(All Day Workshop) 

Join us for a full day art camp hosted by the Recreation 

Department and the Palo Alto Art Center. Spend the week 

taking pictures of places and people in the city of Palo 

Alto. Learn about the fundamentals of digital photography, 

including composition, lighting, perspective, contrast, color, 

portraiture and motion, while you are out shooting in the 

field. Each morning, kids will take photographs at various 

sites around Palo Alto. In the afternoons, camp will be 

held in the computer lab at The Drop at Cubberley Community 

Center, where kids will use Photoshop to enhance, 

manipulate and finish digital images. At the end of the 

week, choose your favorite pictures and create a portfolio

their children except group flute class. MAM provides a 

full size digital keyboard in the class. Each family has their 

own keyboard to use in the class. Music instruments are

Aidan, the 2012 Foothills Day Camp 

Site Director, started attending Foothills 

Camp when he was 7 years 

old, and has returned every summer 

since then. He just graduated from 

UCSC with a BA in History and 

has been accepted in the Santa 

Clara University Teaching Credential 

program: 

“When I first started attending Foothills 

Camp as a camper, I remember 

my favorite things to do were singing on the bus (I still know 

every single song!), and just being outdoors, hiking around 

Foothills Park. As soon as I turned 13 (and could no longer 

attend camp as a camper) I was accepted into the Counselor 

in Training program for Foothills Camp, and a couple years 

later was hired as a Foothills Camp Counselor…I couldn’t 

stay away! 

I enjoy working with younger kids and that is the main 

reason I continue to come back year after year. Many of 

these kids don’t have a lot of opportunities to play outside 

during the year, so to be able to show them around Foothills 

and help develop that love of the great outdoors…it’s 

just very fulfilling.” 

Foothills Day Camp 

Celebrating 55 years of creating lifelong friends, long lasting 

memories, and a deep respect and love of nature, Foothills 

Day Camp is back for another incredible summer in the great 

outdoors. Campers will participate in weekly activities that 

revolve around interesting themes and include engaging outdoor 

games, exciting hikes, hands-on activities with wildlife, 

canoeing in Boronda lake, and more. NEW in 2013: Each session 

includes pre and post camp, which means you can drop 

your child off anytime between 7:30am-8:45am, and pick your 

child up anytime between 4-6pm. Additionally, campers will 

spend the second Thursday sleeping under a blanket of stars 

at Camp Towle for the ultimate “campout” experience. Night 

activities include a delicious BBQ, animated storytelling by our 

seasoned camp staff, a thrilling night hike, and memories for a 

lifetime. Campers should be dropped off by 8:45am at the Girl 

Scout House for the bus ride to Foothills Park daily. Visit our

Greg Betts, the current Community Services Department 

Director for the City of Palo Alto, recalls his time spent 

at Foothills Camp in the early 1960’s and how it has 

positively influenced his life, career, and love of nature: 

“My first year at Foothills Fun Camp was when I was five 

in the early 60’s. Being the youngest of four kids in my 

family, I remember how much fun it was to be outside 

all day long with kids my own age, playing games that 

we never experienced in school, learning campfire songs 

like “I saw a bear…,” and figuring out how to avoid bees, 

sunburn and thistles along the trail. 

Even after camp was through for the summer, I was so 

entranced with Foothills Park and the unique experiences 

in nature; it probably wasn’t any wonder that 

as I grew older my interests in college would gravitate 

towards degrees in Wildlife & Fisheries Biology and 

Animal Science. 

My thirty-some-odd years working with the City and serving 

the community has given me an enviable opportunity 

to ensure that the next generation of kids are able to 

enjoy the valuable experiences and recreational opportunities 

that I relished as a child. Every turn provides great 

opportunities to expand the educational, creative and 

interactive camps, classes and special events we offer for 

everyone in the community. 

And whenever I hear the camp bus returning to the 

Lucie Stern Center in the late afternoons of summer, 

I continue to sing along the refrains of those longcherished 

camp songs!” 

Foothills Fun Camp 

Celebrating 55 years of giving youth lifelong memories, 

friends, and a deep love of nature! Allow your child the 

opportunity to fall in love with the great outdoors at 

popular Foothills Park. In this historic, traditional day 

camp your child will play on miles of trails, woodlands, 

fields, streams, Boronda Lake, and enjoy spectacular 

views of the bay area. Wildlife abounds! This camp is 

filled with tradition and will include educational hikes, 

engaging games, silly songs, and crafty activities. NEW

Tennis Junior League 

Jr. League Team Tennis provides excellent instruction, extensive 

practice, and exciting match play for juniors (10-15 years 

old). This program is designed for boys and girls at the IN- 

TERMEDIATE to HIGH INTERMEDIATE level (8-20 players). 

Juniors, who will be 16 years or older before August 1st of 

this year, and/or juniors who have achieved a top 50 ranking 

in the U.S.T.A’s 14 or 16 year old divisions are ineligible. THIS 

PROGRAM IS NOT FOR NOVICE AND LOW INTERMEDIATE 

PLAYERS. Practice will be twice a week and match play 

will be on Fridays (until approx. 3:30pm) versus other local 

Bay Area teams. The season culminates with the Whitlinger

SHORELINE AQUATICS 

Camp Shoreline 

Discover Camp Shoreline nestled in the heart of Silicon 

Valley, amidst a wildlife and bird sanctuary, and next to the 

serene water’s edge of 50-acre Shoreline Lake. Our group of 

talented and exuberant counselors skilled in a range of water 

sports and land activities will enthuse the young camper 

into exploring their active and creative sides. Mornings are 

usually spent learning to kayak, canoe, row or cycle the 

pedalboats. (Those interested in the windsurf/sail program, 

see Windsurfing/Sailing Level I and II camps offered.) 

Afternoons will be spent playing games, participating in 

craft activities, taking a sailboat ride, hiking in the natural 

surroundings, learning about Shoreline Park, birdwatching 

in its wildlife sanctuary, or even dropping by the historic 

Rengstorff House museum for a visit. It’s enough to engage 

the energies of the liveliest child!

Windsurfing and Sailing: Level 1 

Hands-on course whereby students are broken into small 

teams and introduced to the fundamentals of both fulfilling 

and rewarding lifetime sports. Our talented and well-qualified 

instructors will provide a supportive learning environment 

covering water safety, board and boat handling basics, 

rigging and de-rigging as well as knot tying. Windsurfers 

will practice first on a land simulator in order to understand 

wind direction and board handling before heading out on 

their own. Additional topics covered include jibing, tacking, 

upwind sailing, helmsmanship, docking, and setting a basic 

sailing course. Daily on-the-water sailing exercises progressively 

develop each essential skill. Students alternate skipper 

and crew duties with their sailing partners to learn both 

positions. End of session skills assessment is issued. This 

course is perfect for 9 to 15 year olds.

Windsurfing and Sailing: Level 2 

Step up the performance for a week of refining your 

windsurfing and sailing skills! Challenge yourself, as wind 

conditions will be stronger for this level. Learn faster tacks, 

pivot jibes, more freestyle moves, advanced safety skills, 

and in-depth upwind sailing with our team of certified 

advanced level instructors. Students continue to hone their 

skills through intensive on-the-water instruction. Topics 

covered include refining sail trim, heel control and sail shape 

controls. Capsize, self-rescue and man overboard drills are 

practiced. Sail a windward/leeward racecourse! Timed racing 

starts and roll tacks will be covered. Class includes intensive 

sailing drills and informal racing. End of session evaluation 

tests skills learned.

TEEN CAMPS 

Counselor in Training (CIT) 

The CIT program is a fun and exciting experience for teenagers 

who love kids and are 13 to 14 years of age. The program 

emphasizes leadership, teamwork, community service, 

responsibility, safety and initiative. Camp Counselors and 

Directors mentor and prepare the CIT’s for all the skills 

needed to become successful Camp Counselors. In order 

to participate, all applicants must complete an application by 

3/30. Applications can be obtained at the Lucie Stern front 

desk, or by calling 650-463-4900. Interviews for acceptance 

into the program will be conducted on 4/24 & 4/25 between 

3pm to 6pm. If accepted into the program, then participants 

will need to register for both the MANDATORY training session

Advanced Digital Photography 



Department and the Palo Alto Art Center. Continue to 

develop your shooting skills and learn more advanced 

studio techniques, including lighting. Each morning, kids 

will take photographs at various sites around Palo Alto. In 

the afternoons, camp will be held in the computer lab at the 

Teen Center at Cubberley Community Center, where kids 

will use Photoshop to enhance, manipulate, and finish digital 

images. Prerequisite: This class is intended for students 

who have previous experience with digital photography. The 

class is open to all students who completed Exploring Palo 

Alto through Digital Photography in summer 2012. Other 

interested students should submit a small photography portfolio 

(5 images) or letter of recommendation to artcenter@

Junior Lifeguarding Camp 

Do you want to be a lifeguard As a Junior Lifeguard, you 

learn the necessary skills to become member of our aquatics 

team at the age of 15. This program offers youth ages 

13-14 an opportunity to learn quality water safety techniques 

in a fun and engaging environment with Pool Managers 

and Assistant Pool Managers as mentors. The program 

emphasizes respect for self, others, and the aquatic environment. 

Focus is given to personal safety, rescue techniques, 

water safety instruction, improved physical conditioning and 

fun. In order to participate, all applicants must complete and 

submit an application by 3/31. Applications can be obtained 

at the Lucie Stern front desk or by calling 650-463-4900. 

After submitting an application, applicants will be contacted 

for interviews scheduled on 4/20 and 4/21 between 3-6pm. 

If accepted into the program participants will then need to 

submit a registration form for the MANDATORY training session 

and all assigned program sessions. No registrations are

Teen Theatre Lab – Two-week 

session 

Teen Theatre Lab is an acting practicum taught by working 

theatre professionals. The theatre lab will focus on developing 

a solid foundation for all theatrical endeavors through 

acting and improv workshops, monologue and scene work, 

and vocal and dance classes. The students will workshop a 

performance piece to present to parents and friends on the 

final day of class. Participants may register for one or both 

sessions and are accepted on a first come basis. Participants

Summer Aquatics 37

Junior Lifeguarding Camp 

Do you want to be a lifeguard As a Junior Lifeguard, you 

learn the necessary skills to become member of our aquatics 

team at the age of 15. This program offers youth ages 

13-14 an opportunity to learn quality water safety techniques 

in a fun and engaging environment with Pool Managers 

and Assistant Pool Managers as mentors. The program 

emphasizes respect for self, others, and the aquatic environment. 

Focus is given to personal safety, rescue techniques, 

water safety instruction, improved physical conditioning and 

fun. In order to participate, all applicants must complete and 

submit an application by 3/31. Applications can be obtained 

at the Lucie Stern front desk or by calling 650-463-4900. 

After submitting an application, applicants will be contacted 

for interviews scheduled on 4/20 and 4/21 between 3-6pm. 

If accepted into the program participants will then need to 

submit a registration form for the MANDATORY training session 

and all assigned program sessions. No registrations are 

to be submitted prior to being accepted into the program.

Rinconada Preschool Swim 

Preschool Swim is a beginning to intermediate class for students 

who are 3-4 years. Water comfort and safety are emphasized in 

addition to the building blocks of swimming including coordinating 

arm and leg motion, blowing bubbles, floating and gradually 

submerged head and face. More advanced students will begin 

stroke technique and swimming independently. Skills covered 

in Preschool Swim overlap with material in Level 1 and 2. Those 

who advance from Preschool Swim may be eligible to skip Level 

1 and move directly to Level 2.

Many of Palo Alto’s 36 parks feature barbeque grills, sports fields, 

playground equipment, and other amenities. Numbers listed 

before each park correspond to the map on page 48. Please note 

that Foothills Park is open to Palo Alto residents and their guests 

only; proof of residency is required. For information about Foothills 

Park please call 329-2423. To learn more about Baylands Nature 

Preserve please call 329-2506. 

ATHLETIC FIELD RESERVATIONS 

Athletic fields may be reserved for exclusive use. For information on 

field availability and an application, please call 329-2697 or 329-2639. 

PICNIC TABLE RESERVATIONS 

Mitchell and Rinconada Parks 

Group sites are available to residents and Palo Alto-based businesses 

to reserve 6 months in advance. Individual sites may be reserved 

by Palo Alto residents May thru October on Monday through 

Thursday of the weekend of use by 3pm. Non-residents may make 

reservations on the Wednesday & Thursday of the weekend of use 

if tables are available. Reservations can be made at the Lucie Stern 

Community Center or by faxing in the completed forms (along with
