Parish Survey
Coming November 22-23
At all Masses on Saturday, November 22 nd , and Sunday,
November 23 rd , parishioners will be asked to complete a short
survey about our parish. This will provide information for an
upcoming Parish Study, the goal of which is to build more vibrant
parishes and plan for ministry and mission in the future. We ask
that all those present who are 14 or older please complete one of
the surveys so that we have the most accurate information
possible.
The results of the survey will be analyzed and then shared with
the parish in January. Four of our neighboring parishes are also
doing parish studies: St. John Neumann, Mount Laurel; Our
Lady Queen of Peace, Hainesport; Christ the Redeemer, Mount
Holly; and Sacred Heart, Mount Holly. Representatives from
each parish will meet from January to November 2009 to discuss
how our parishes can remain vibrant and even collaborate. At
the end of the study, we will make a recommendation to the
bishop about how best our parishes can do this. Unlike previous
studies where mergers were definitely going to take place, our
situation is very different. Our Catholic population has not
decreased; rather we are bursting at the seams. We want to
explore how better to address the needs of all Catholics in this
area of Burlington County and develop new plans for ministry in
light of the current and future realities within the county and the
Diocese of Trenton. Next week, we will include a letter from
Bishop Smith in the bulletin regarding his vision for the study.
During the course of our parish study, we will keep you up-todate
on the progress of discussions. Your feedback on the
survey will be very much appreciated and helpful for discerning
how Our Lady’s parish can become even more vibrant.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Casserole Collection
We will be collecting frozen casseroles on Monday, November
10 th at the Heritage House from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and on
Tuesday, November 11 th from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. If you need a
baking pan, they are available in the room in the upper church,
behind the Sacred Heart statue. All casseroles are taken to
Catholic Charities in Delanco to be distributed to needy families
in Burlington County. We welcome all parishioners to participate
in this ministry and thank those families who contribute to this
program each month.
Gospel - John 2:13-22
Since the Passover of the Jews was near,
Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and
doves,
as well as the money-changers seated there.
He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and
oxen,
and spilled the coins of the money-changers
and overturned their tables,
and to those who sold doves he said,
"Take these out of here,
and stop making my Father's house a marketplace."
His disciples recalled the words of Scripture,
Zeal for your house will consume me.
At this the Jews answered and said to him,
"What sign can you show us for doing this"
Jesus answered and said to them,
"Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."
The Jews said,
"This temple has been under construction for forty-six years,
and you will raise it up in three days"
But he was speaking about the temple of his Body.
Therefore, when he was raised from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they came to believe the Scripture
and the word Jesus had spoken.
Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome:
In our country, we treasure and respect certain buildings and
monuments because they represent our freedom as a nation.
Some locations have special significance because of an event
that happened there. Perhaps there is a home or a piece of
property that is important to your family because your ancestors
settled there many years ago and made it home. In the Gospel
proclaimed today, Jesus sees that a special place - the Temple
of Jerusalem, is being disrespected. The Temple in Jerusalem is
not only the major place of worship for the Jewish people, it is a
symbol that represents the identity of Israel as a people and their
one and almighty God. This is a fitting Gospel for this day when
we honor the Lateran Basilica which is Rome’s cathedral. This
church is valued around the world as representing our oneness
as a Church.
Question of the Week: What does it mean to be faithful
Journal Starter: God has given me a lot of…I think I can make
this grow by….
Word of the Week: faithful
Our Lady’s Parish Statue
If you would like OLGC’s Our Lady of Fatima statue
rosary time, for praying together as a family, or with
your friends, please call
Praying With St. Paul
Come and hear the words of St. Paul in a profound way, learning
how to use the Lectio Divina method of praying with the
scriptures. Lectio Divina has been a proven way for centuries to
contemplate God's Word. We are celebrating the year of Paul
and this would be an excellent way to delve into his writings. Our
evening will be led by Deacon Jim Grogan in the Church from
7:00 - 8:30 PM.
colds and flu. Please don't feel obligated to shake hands during
coming out to the flu clinic that was held last Sunday. Everyone
enjoyed the fast service plus the baked goodies.
Marriage Annulment Information
“When cares abound within me, your comfort gladdens my soul” (Psalm 94)
The process for declaring a marriage null can be very difficult and
confusing for a divorced Catholic, and the hurt and pain
associated with it is overwhelming at times. Thus, our diocese
provides an opportunity for healing and support through the
Consolation Ministry of the Office of Family Life/Respect Life
which has organized Annulment Information Evenings, 7:30 to
9:30 PM, on the following dates:
Wednesday, November 12, 2008: St. Gregory the Great,
Hamilton Square NJ
Wednesday, March 25, 2009: St. Mary Church, Barnegat NJ
Tuesday, March 31, 2009: St. Catharine Church, Holmdel NJ
No registration is required. For more information, please contact
Martha Bachman the Parish Office (856-235-0281, ext. 321;
bachmanm@olgcnj.org); or the diocesan coordinator, Marilyn
Schipp (609-406-7400, ext. 5557; mschip@dioceseoftrenton.org).
Social Outreach Ministry
The Food Program of the Social Outreach Ministry continues to
look for parishioners to prepare home cooked meals and soups
for the well being of fellow parishioners. When you sit down for
dinner please set an extra place at your table for our parish’s
Food Program. We do this in partnership with Aid for Friends,
who make their social awareness, freezer trays, soup containers,
and freezer available to us. Our Frozen Meal Center is located in
the rear hallway of the Crypt Chapel.
Remember Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 27, 2008.
The Food Program is in need of parishioners to prepare Turkey
Dinners in advance of November 27 th so fellow parishioners can
have a Turkey Dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Kindly deliver these
meals to our Frozen Meal Center by the weekend of November
15, 2008.
We ask that you contact Deacon Papuga in the Parish Office
(856-235-0181) of anyone in your circle of friends, family, or
neighborhood that would benefit from receiving meals on a
weekly basis. Please join us in bringing nourishment and
friendship to them once a week.
Boy Scouts help
with Food Drive
In conjunction with the Parish’s Thanksgiving Food Drive, Cub
Scout Pack 61, Boy Scout Troop 61 and Venture Crew 61,
sponsored by Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, will be
distributing Scouting for Food bags after Mass on Saturday,
November 8 th and Sunday, November 9 th . We ask that
parishioners take a bag and return it on Saturday, November 15 th
or Sunday, November 16 th with non-perishable, non-breakable
food items such as canned goods. The bags will be collected
and the food will be donated to the Catholic Charities emergency
food bank in Delanco.
“Scouting for Food” is Boy Scouting’s community stewardship
project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the
community in which we live and work. In the Law of the Pack, a
Cub Scout gives good will and in the Boy Scout Oath, a Boy
Scout promises to help other people at all times. In the Venturing
Oath, Venturers promise to help others. By participating in a
Scouting for Food program, scouts come a step closer to fulfilling
those words.
Our Catholic Heritage
Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish
“Christ … fully reveals man to man himself
and makes his supreme calling clear.”
The Catholic Heritage Committee at Our Lady of Good Counsel
Parish seeks to assist our parishioners in seeing more clearly the
parish history, who we are now, and who Christ calls us to be.
Memorabilia will be collected, preserved and displayed to tell the
history of Our Lady’s Parish.
If you should have any objects and pictures that you would like to
share please contact Fr. Jim O’Neill at the rectory office (856)
Environment Ministry
Some helpful information: A number of people have expressed
an interest in compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) but are
concerned about proper disposal of used CFLs. Some members
of the environment ministry discovered that Home Depot accepts
used CFLs and will dispose of them properly. This is a free
service Home Depot is providing. There is a specific marked box
by the RETURNS desk at Home Depot where anyone can bring
their used CFLs, place the light bulb in the plastic bag provided
and put in the box.
Hopefully, this information will make it easier for everyone to
switch from regular light bulbs to CFLs. While CFLs initially cost
more then regular light bulbs, you save money in the long run
because the CFLs last longer than normal light bulbs and use
less energy, thus reducing your electric bill. While it is true there
is a small amount of mercury in CFLs (which is why they have to
be disposed of properly), in actuality more mercury is released
into the air when we use regular light bulbs.
