Event Organiser Pack
Welcome to your
Go Bananas! pack
This pack is intended to help you with planning and organising your own Go Bananas! event
and includes a step-by-step guide, an order form to request a banana costume and free
WCRF promotional materials, as well as useful information on health and safety advice and
details on where to send the money you raise.
This year marks six years of Going Bananas across Informa in support of World Cancer
Research Fund (WCRF). Last year’s global participation and enthusiasm were fantastic– we
donated over £72,500 to WCRF through almost 2,000 of you participating in fun runs, sports
day events, scavenger hunts and I believe even a hip hop dance class (courtesy of the Dubai
office). It was also the 1st year that I was requested to don my Banana suit for a pedalo race
back in Switzerland. Creativity around the theme of bananas and fundraising seems to know
no bounds.
What have WCRF done with the money Some of their highlights from last year include
increasing the capacity of their children’s education programmes in Hong Kong, the
Netherlands and UK. The programmes educate children and parents on eating healthily and
moving more, helping reduce their risk of developing cancer in adulthood. In the USA more
than $4.1 million was awarded to fund 26 new cancer prevention research projects.
So, let’s aim for £100,000 this year. I will again donate £1 for every member of staff who
participates and I hope that my cheque is for £8,000. A big aim, but it would be fantastic to
have 100% participation from managers and staff. If you weren’t part of the company back in
April 2011 (or actually, even if you were), I recommend taking a look at last year’s photo gallery
at www.wcrf.org/informa to see what a great global event it is. We will be back to a 3km run in
London this year on April 19th – do come to race, walk, help or spectate. Come in fancy dress
and make it a fun 3km. I very much look forward to being part of and hearing about all of
2012’s Go Bananas events Group-wide.
How will going bananas make a difference
WCRF funds scientific projects into the relationship between food, nutrition and
cancer. Through your support we can continue to develop our knowledge of the diet/
cancer link, and provide a wide range of public education programmes. WCRF delivers
the positive message that cancer is a largely preventable disease as research has
found that about a third of the most common cancers can be prevented through eating
a healthy diet, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight.
Please find enclosed the following items that will help you get started:
• Sponsorship form – photocopy if you need more copies. When you have collected your
sponsorship money, we will ask for you to please return the forms to WCRF as we require
them for Gift Aid auditing purposes.
Step-by-step Guide
It couldn’t be easier, just follow these 5 simple steps
and you will be on your way to going bananas!
When
Choose a date for your event
Hold your event on a date that is convenient for your office, Infoma are going to Go Bananas!
WHAT
Decide on and plan your event
Decide who should wear the banana costume and then walk, chase, skip or hop to beat them across
the finishing line. Or how about something different A penalty shoot out with the banana in goal Or
how about finding the banana on a treasure hunt
Here are some basic things you should consider - the type of event, number of people expected,
start and finish times, and whether insurance is needed. Also remember to check the weather
forecast before the big day.
WHERE
Find a venue and invite people
Find a suitable venue, such as a playing field or a park near your office and find out whether you need
permission to use it.
Promote your event by including information such as your contact details, price and the date of the
event on the enclosed poster. Photocopy and display it in prominent in the places around the office.
HOW
Go Bananas on the day!
Write a checklist and keep it to hand to help things run smoothly on the day. Give participants clear
instructions and away you go. Don’t forget to add ‘have fun’ to your checklist!
WHY
Raise money for WCRF
This is a fun way to get involved in exercise whilst raising money for a great cause. Encourage
participants to get sponsored (photocopy the enclosed sponsor form) or ask them to make a donation
for taking part. You could also provide refreshments in return for a donation to WCRF, or you go
thirsty! Contact us at informarun@wcrf.org for other fundraising ideas.
Health & Safety
Informa and World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) will in no way be held responsible
for any injury or illness incurred as a result of people taking part in
Go Bananas! Participants take part in Go Bananas! at their own risk.
Here are some basic guidelines which you can consider to ensure that
participants have a safe and fun time:
• Consider the physical limitations of participants - it would be unwise to
select something that few can complete.
• Make sure people are prepared to take part - for example do they need
trainers, sports kit or specific equipment to join in
• Ensure there is water available, either by providing it or advising
participants to bring their own.
• Please follow the health and safety guidelines of your chosen venue.
• Take a walk around the course beforehand noting any potential hazards
and be sure to point these out to participants.
• Please secure appropriate insurance cover for your event; many venues
will have the correct insurance to cover events on their premises, but do
check for public liability cover to ensure that everyone is protected.
• Always remember to treat the Banana with respect - no kicking or
pushing the Banana and make sure all participants are aware of this.
