FROM THE PREZ
Dear Members, September 2012
It’s overwhelming for me to witness members volunteering in our club. It’s what
keeps this club going and continuing to be a fun experience for our members.
Thank you from me and all our members. To sum it up with an Aussie
expression, ‘Good On You’.
Boy, has the summer flown by, the Bandito Barneys Flash Drive by Ron Gliot
had 22 members attending. The day after that, Kevin Daleiden organized the St.
Jude’s Charity Cruise-in at Diamond Jim’s in East Dundee, and had 35
vehicles register.
So far in August the Sunburst Picnic at the Hottenrott’s was a success on a
perfect weather day. The Sunburst/Northern Illinois Corvette Club
Autocross at Rockford Speedway, organized by Lee Douglas and Matt Waters
had a large attendance. And the Sunburst Poker Run by Don Elliott & Bill
Hoak was just completed, I counted over 25 corvettes lined up in front of
Culvers. By the time you read this, the back to back corvette cruise nights in
Cary & Barrington will have taken place, as will the Sunburst/Fox Valley Kane
County Cougars baseball game.
September has Mt. Prospect Cruise Night – Corvettes on Saturday the 1 st , in
the Metra parking lot on the North side of the tracks at Rt. 14 & Rt. 83.
*It also brings us to our biggest fundraising event of the year, the Sunburst Car
Show on Sunday the 16 th . I’m asking for ‘all hands on deck’ to support the club
for this event. Gary Gembala is the car show chairman, and needs more
volunteers, please contact him and ask where you can help.
Then we have the Corvette Run to the Door, a 3 day drive out to Door County,
starting on Friday the 28th, organized by Mark & Patti DalBello.
October brings the St. Jude’s Cruise to Memphis, a 5 day drive out, starting on
Wednesday the 5 th , organized by Lee Douglas. On Saturday the 6 th , try a
Sunburst Golf Outing, being organized by Mike Stevens & Mike Rosendahl.
Then put on a costume and come out for the Sunburst Halloween Party, on
Saturday the 27 th , a fundraiser for Little Angels, organized by Jean Mumford.
Hope you’re having a good Corvette summer!
Yours in vetting,
Tom
MW-277-139 were: 1 st , John Henney & Lynn Reed; 2 nd , Ron Gliot & Cheryl
and John Henney & Lynn Reed in the door prize drawing. Johnny’s
Chophouse also added a $25
Johnny’s gift certificate to our
door prize drawing, which was
won by Jim & Joani Downing.
Sunburst Corvette Cub has been holding the annual poker rallye for 11
consecutive years. The first one, in 2001, was co-hosted by J.R. & Karen
Hottenrott and Don & Dee Elliott. Don & Dee have been hosting the event
with the help of many members for the past ten years. This year Bill & Jo
Hoak co-hosted the event.
On August 18 th , 2012 we gathered at
the Culvers in Woodstock, the
staring point for the rallye, with 3
intermediate stops at Pasquesi’s
Home & Garden in Barrington;
Oberweis Dairy in McHenry and
Bald Point Marina in Johnsburg.
The rallyes ended at Johnny’s
Chophouse in Antioch were we all
participated in our second most
favorite activity…eating! We were
pleased to have 23 cars participate in this year’s poker rallyes.
The Poker Rallyes’outcome is primarily based on “chance”. Participants
played two poker hands, one for each event, beginning at the start and
drawing one card at the three intermediate stops and the 5 th card at
Johnny’s. Players were also given the opportunity to purchase extra hands
at the beginning and extra cards at the end, based on their first five cards.
The poker game is 5 or 7-card stud, if you wish to purchase two extra cards.
Other Sunburst members who volunteered time to create the great route, help as
dealers, registration and tech inspections were: Bill & Jean Mumford; Al Brink &Pat
Granzberg; Ray & Janet Elston and Emily Kasperski & Gina Wierz.
A big thank you to all who helped and participated in making this year’s Poker
Rallyes a great event that was enjoyed by all. We look forward to next year’s event.
Car Show Judges Workshop
Sunday, August 5 th
Thanks to all who attended and I am looking forward to an
excellent Sunburst car show.
The NCCC website has the rules and regulations for car
shows. I advise everyone to please look up the guidelines and
familiarize yourselves with the expectations for a Concours
car show. This is what we will be using when judging the
event.
On August 5 th we had a meeting at our home for all of the
Sunburst members that graciously volunteered to be Judges for
this years car show. We had 13 cars and 24 people attend. We
went over the NCCC guidelines for hosting a sanctioned event
and split up into groups. We did a practice session on a few cars
and got a handle on the judging process. All involved felt that the
pre show meeting was very helpful and everyone is now on the
same page.
After all of the important “stuff” was out of the way, we as good
Sunburst folks imbibed in burgers and brats, beer, wine and soft
drinks.
The
weather
the day
of the
show will be in the mid 70’s, Sunny with a nice North Westerly
breeze!
10
See ya at the Show!
Kevin

Sunburst/Fox Valley
Kane County Cougars Baseball Game
August 26th
The joint Sunburst/Fox Valley Cougar’s baseball game went
very well. We started with an 8 ‘vette caravan (Arnold,
Downing, Emmons, Ernst, Gliot, Hrody, Palmer, Rosendahl)
from the Meijer parking lot in Algonquin to the ballpark in
Geneva, where they had close-in parking coned off for us. Rick
& Bonnie Edwardsen and Elly’s dad joined us at the ballpark,
for a total of 19 people. Fox Valley CC had 31 people there,
and we enjoyed visiting with them.
It was a drizzly day, but the temperature was in the 70s and we had a roof over our heads, so we were very
comfortable and everyone enjoyed the game. Did I mention we ate a lot? The burgers & brats & dogs
were tasty, along with the potato salad & fruit salad & chips, and we overdosed on the ice cream
sandwiches to finish them off! A good time was had by all.
