Imitating the Mystery We Celebrate…
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Gaudet Mater Ecclesia…Mother Church rejoices.
With these words, Pope Blessed John XXIII welcomed
the bishops of the world and indeed, the countless
souls of faithful Christians whom they cared for, to a
dramatic and life-changing event on October 11,
1962. Desiring to ‘open the windows’ of the Vatican
to the needs and concerns of the world so that the
unchanging truth of the Gospel might be proclaimed
with greater clarity and efficacy to modern man, the
Holy Father said to his brother bishops: "Our duty is
not only to guard this precious treasure, as if we were
concerned only with antiquity, but to dedicate
ourselves with an earnest will and without fear to
that work which our era demands of us, pursuing
thus the path which the Church has followed for
twenty centuries."
This week the current Bishop of Rome and
Successor of the Apostle Peter invites us to enter a
time of joyful and eager reflection on the good work
that has been done and that which remains for Holy
Church to that She might be for us who love her as
well as for those who do not yet know her both
mother and teacher, leading us to the sacred heart of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. What a gift for us
all. What a golden opportunity on this golden
anniversary. There is much to be discovered, learned
and shared. Please, dear family in faith, jump in! Do
things, engage in activities, consider approaches to
your Catholic faith that you’ve never done. This
church of ours, rather, this Church of Jesus Christ, is a
sleeping giant. Let’s wake her up, one heart at a time
and discover, as Good Pope John exhorted us, an
extraordinary treasure that we cannot help but share
with the entire world! Happy Anniversary, Vatican
Council II!!!

Didn’t Vatican II say we don’t have to go to confession anymore?
WRONG!
What the council DID say was that we should celebrate it with greater joy and a greater appreciation for the
boundless mercy of God which sustains us in hope and inspires us to continue along the path to salvation.
Been away from the sacrament for awhile? Come home!
Celebrate it once or twice a year? Come more often!

justice and to those in need.”
The Diocesan Annual Appeal enables us
to do our best to “serve” those living in
poverty or those on the margins of society. Through your
generosity, we can keep our soup kitchens and shelters open.
Thousands of meals are served daily at St. Francis of Assisi
Kitchen, Scranton, St. Anthony’s Kitchen, Williamsport and
St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, Wilkes-Barre. St. Anthony’s
Haven, Scranton, provides a temporary refuge for those who
have no place to call home. At Nativity Place, families in
crisis find emergency housing. With your assistance, Catholic
Social Services provide programs that help the most
vulnerable in our midst. NOTE: In consultation with Msgr.
Joseph Kelly, Diocesan Secretary for Catholic Human
Services and Executive Director, Catholic Social Services, it
has been determined that the second collection historically
taken up during the Fourth Sunday of Lent for Catholic
Social Services be eliminated. Therefore, any donation
parishioners usually made at Masses during the CSS Lenten
Collection in years past should now be included within their
Annual Appeal donation.

WHY DO CATHOLICS SAY “AMEN” AT THE END OF PRAYERS??
IN HEBREW, THE WORD AMEN SHARES THE SAME ROOT AS THE
WORD BELIEVE. THIS ROOT EXPRESSED TRUSTWORTHINESS
AND FAITHFULNESS. WHEN YOU READ THE GOSPELS YOU’LL SEE
JESUS SOMETIMES USED THE WORD AMEN TWICE IN A ROW TO
EMPHASIZE THE TRUSTWORTHINESS OF HIS TEACHING. HE
WANTED HIS LISTENERS TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION. SO
WHEN WE SAY AMEN AT THE END OF A PRAYER WE REINFORCE
OUR FAITH IN WHAT WE JUST SAID. WE ALSO EXPRESS OUR
CONFIDENCE THAT GOD WILL HEAR OUR PRAYERS.

CALLING ALL 6 TH -8 TH GRADERS! – Join us for Autumn
Fun @ Snyder’s Farm Sat., Oct. 20 th 4:30-8pm…An
evening of autumn fun has been planned with you in mind!
Corn maze in the dark, Hayride to the pumpkin field, Bon
Fire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire! This
time together is FREE for the 6 th -8 th Grade parishioners,
you can bring a guest for $5. Parents are welcome to

Just How Crazy Can We Be…Again???
Join us for another insane trip to NYC!
We’re off to meet up with hundreds of Catholic teens in New York City
in the middle of the night for an amazing experience of prayer, music
and friendship, BUT to add to the craziness this year, we have a few
other things in store for you! Here’s the plan:
Saturday, December 1, 9:30AM Depart St. Ann Parking Lot
Quick stop for lunch along the way Arrive NYC at approximately 2PM
Ice Skating at Rockefeller Plaza around the iconic Christmas Tree 2:30-
4 (optional!) 5:30PM Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral (This way you
won’t have to get up early on Sunday) 7:30-10:30PM Catholic

Depart Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Manhattan @ 11PM

merchandise will only be
accepted in the church basement on Sat., Oct. 20 & Sun.,
Oct. 21 from 8am-5pm. Acceptable items are clean,
usable clothing (sized if possible), small appliances in
working order, toys, books, and household items, etc. We
need to schedule many volunteers to help with this worthy
cause for the parish; if interested in helping, please contact

Family Promise - Company’s coming October 28 th to
November 4 th . Come help us share the Love of Christ with our
Family Promise guests. We are once again looking for
volunteers for our host week. We will need help setting up the
Parish Activity Center on Sunday afternoon and help taking
down after the families leave. There are opportunities to prepare
all or part of a meal, share conversation and activities with our
guests, be an overnight host or assist with van transportation
from the Family Promise Day Center to St. Ann’s. If you are
interested or just curious about what goes on during our host

FAITH SHARING GROUP - Last Sunday we met for a rewarding
discussion on the discipleship of Peter. Please join us on
Sunday Oct. 21 st as we discuss The Centurion of Capernaum,
who “Felt not worthy that thou should come under my roof”
and yet Jesus “marveled “at his great faith. We meet from
8:30am until 9:30, in the former convent. Join us as we get to
know the men and women who were Jesus’ first followers.
CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS - Members of the Catholic
Daughters of the Americas will be in our parish on the
weekend of Oct. 20 & 21 to speak to any Catholic woman
18 years or older who would be interested in joining Court
Our Lady #532 here in Williamsport. Please stop by their
table to talk to them after Mass.
Orientation Program An orientation program will be held
to meet the members on Tue., October 23 at St Lawrence
Hall at 6:30pm for any lady interested in learning more
about Catholic Daughters.
ST. BONIFACE BASKET BINGO - Saturday, October 20 th for the
annual Longaberger Basket Bingo at St. Boniface, for more

SJNRA ANNUAL BASKET BONANZA Friday, October 26 at the
SJNRA Franklin Street Campus, 710 Franklin Street. Doors open
at 5 pm. The drawing starts at 7:15 pm. This Chinese-style
auction features more than 65 baskets, worth at least $25 each,
and 35 specialty MEGA baskets, each worth over $150. Advance
tickets are available at any SJNRA campus or on our Preview
Nights, Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25 from 6-8 pm.
THANKSGIVING TURKEY DINNER The St. Ann Women’s Guild is
taking reservations for a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner with all
the trimmings on Monday, November 5 th at 6:00 p.m. in the
Church Hall. Your check for $11/person is your reservation.
