120 THE MAGNET
automatically regulated by thermostats.
The radiators are kept clear of
air and water by means of exhaust
'Pumps resulting in 8 higher beating
efficiency hy allowing a clear passage
of steam.
The air entering the sChool is passed
through three successive chambers.
The .first and third are filled
with steam heated eoils which form 8
fourth scetion of radiators. In the
other chamber the air is thoroughly
washed to remove dust andr germ particles
by passing through a curtain of
water sprayed from the top of the
chamber. The air is then 'forced to
:he various class rooms.
This part of the heating system
serves in the spring' and fall to warm
the school without the radiators and
all year rOWld to supply clean fresh
Ṫhe ventilation like the radiation
would not be complete without exnaust
fans. These fans are placed
behind the Art Room on the roof and
draw from the rooms and chemical
fume closets all the fetid and chalk
dusted atmosphere to blow it to the
four winds. So Jarvis pupils here·
after will spend their afternoons free
from lingering odors of well-seasoned
lunches
Do It Electrically
When !filii Ampere first saw Volt
Her charms passed all resistance.
.A spark coiled in his heart poor colt
He needed prompt assistance.
And she; tho plighted to old Watt,
Could alternate affection,
So let her eyes bolt glances hot,
Right in poor Volt's direction.
Thc current of Volt's wrath flowed
strong!
He vowcd Volt should not meter.
·For daughter Poly Phase had long
Hoped that Volt would be sweeter;
'And so to Milli Ampere, he
A stern note did transmitter,
Requesting she transform, and be,
1£ possible, less bitter.
So M:illi Ampere flirted not,
But knew that it was wise
To regulate the rage of Watt
And with his synellonize.
Then Volt with Poly PllIlse did fuse
From her he did not roam.
They rectified divergent views
And started a small Ohm.
Pyrotechny
Perhaps you have wondered just
what it is that bad boys put on the
Rtreet-ear tracks to make that awful
noise. Now I' am going to tell you.
lt is a mixture of 1,4 part chlorate of
Jlotash and ~ part sulphur; and this
is the way to make it. Grind the
lumps out of the sulphur, mix in the
potasb, and presto,. it is made. This
mixture will burn with a bright
bluish flame, and when doing so will
generate a most obnoxious gas. If
it is tightly packed in a container and
;hen sm:\rtly hit, it will explode with
a loud lIoise Aud plenty of smoke.
For ten cents you can make enough of
it to blow your head off.
To make rockets the following mixture
is used: 68 parts saltpeter, 12
parts sulphur, and 32 parts charcoal.
Grind the charcoal to a fine po.wder,
mix thc sulphur with it, and then stir
in well the saltpetcr. Prepare a container
as in an ordinary rocket and
pack this with your mixture, thcn
make a conical depression in the
powder at the end. Insert a fuse and
then close up the tube with wadding.
1£ you can get some empty rifle
shells such AS are used in the army,
you call have a lot of fun. File small
holes in the shells, near the bottom,
insert a fuse into each hole and pack
the shells with gunpowder, then close
them tightly with wadding. You can
mount these shells on model battleships
as guns, or make field gUlls out
of them.
