The U15 Boys kept their unbeaten record, with no tries
conceded in all County competitions, by beating Bungay
17 - 0 and Thurston 20 - 0 in the Suffolk Finals. Having
already been crowned West Suffolk Champions, fending
off 5 different teams, the 25-strong squad took to the field
to play some of the best rugby of their campaign. The
boys showed unprecedented levels of leadership,
discipline and passion to take the hard work on the
training ground onto the pitch. Training will continue
throughout the summer, linking closely with Bury St
Edmunds Rugby Club, and benefiting from expertise of
st
former King Edward VI student and Bury 1 Team
Captain Matt Edison.
Rob Walden, Assistant Headteacher and Director of
Sports Partnerships said “We have a strong partnership
with our local clubs. Many of the boys get access to good
quality coaching at Bury Rugby Club. Several are from
other clubs such as Newmarket and Sudbury, whilst
some have only ever played for the school team. It's this
kind of social mixing which makes school sport unique,
and something to be cherished”.
King Edward VI has big plans ahead for school rugby.
Bury first team coach, Gavin Hogg and Development
Coaches Ben Scully and Ben Radmall already input
regularly to coaching sessions, Matt Edison (Bury first
team captain) comes into school to help develop a range
of sports and to mentor students, and links are
developing with the West Suffolk College Rugby
Academy. This year saw the first 5 rugby players (Under
14) to travel to Shanghai as rugby leaders, teaching
Chinese students how to play the game.
The U14 team won the West Suffolk Cup to make it
through to the county finals, with solid wins over all other
West Suffolk teams. The boys showed strength and
character to take them to the finals, and are now set for a
summer of development towards next year's campaign.
Here come the girls!
Girls Football: County semi-finals
await Georgia and the team
The team will face
Stowmarket in the County
Cup semi-final in a bid to
take county honours next
term. The girls, spearheaded
by Georgia Allen (England
and Arsenal), stand a good
chance of going even further
and stamping their mark on
girls football across the
region. Good luck to all the
girls!
Kieran Tate 20, Callum Brown 11, Matt Irwin
Kier Leech 1. King Edward VI are now due
U15 Volleyball – off to a flying
start
The first game of this season kicked off with
in a stylish 4 – 1 victory over Castle Manor
School. Volleyball is an emerging sport at
King Edward VI. Anyone interested in
coming along to the club should pop down
to the dome on Thursday lunchtimes to take
a look.
This edition's community corner focuses on former student and
Bury St Edmunds RFC 1st Team Captain Matt Edison. Currently,
Matt is probably most famous for leading the incredible,
unbeaten Bury 1st team who emphatically secured promotion to
National League Rugby for next year. Matt started at King
Edward VI as an all-round sportsman who made it into every
team going. He went on to win the prestigious “Foundation
Governors Sports Award” for his sporting prowess and leadership
skills. After Sixth Form, Matt gained a scholarship to play rugby in
America. He captained the USA team in the world-cup setup
before returning to the the UK and playing professionally for
Cambridge. Matt has a passion for developing rugby, and
perhaps more importantly, helping children to develop the
personal and social skills which can be gained from involvement
in sport. Matt comes to King Edward VI every Friday to work with
PE groups, and will be running a Friday after-school skills clinic
throughout the summer. He's keen to work with any students,
girls or boys to help enhance their success both in sport and in
life!
Biggest regret: deciding not to captain England colleges u18s
and go on holiday instead (whoops!)
Best piece of advice: work hard, don’t wait for things to happen
and doors to open...decide on what you want and “kick the door
down”
Biggest rugby achievement in rugby: captaining the USA 19s
and 20s,
Biggest life achievement: making some amazing life-long
friends
Most important life skills: there are so many...too many to list,
but it is important to be adaptable and challenge yourself, don’t
accept mediocrity. ....'to change often is to be perfect' (Winston
Churchill)
Most memorable moment: lots of great rugby moments. The
most recent would be captaining the Bury side to a promotion to
the national leagues for the first time in the history of the club!
Future aspiration: To enjoy life to the full!
