Biographical Information
Sidney Kartus was born in 1903 and came to Arizona in 1925. He served on the
staff of the Arizona Colorado River Commission during the 1930’s and was a member of
the President’s National Resources Committee for the Lower Colorado River Basin. In
1929 he joined the Arizona Highline Reclamation Association, of which he became
president in 1944. He also served in the Arizona Legislature from 1944-1958 and
continued to work actively on water rights issues. Sidney Kartus died in 1970.
Scope and Content
The Sidney Kartus Collection consists of documents, clippings and
correspondence about the Colorado River Controversy and Sidney Kartus’ involvement
in water rights and reclamation issues as a member of the Arizona House of
Representatives from Phoenix. This collection of Sidney Kartus’ papers was acquired
through Richard Kartus.
