From the President:
May 2008
I would like to thank Dave Burns of ANVIL
International, Inc. for being our guest speaker for
the April meeting. We had a great turnout for the
presentation on Grooved Piping Systems. Dave
worked as a pipe fitter prior to working for ANVIL, so
he had some extensive field experience to share with
us well. I am sure that everyone walked away with a
better understanding of grooved piping systems and
how they are applied to various projects.
I would also like to thank Tim Morrissey and Gregg
Melfe of Midwest Spec along with Brian McFearin
and Chris Burton of Victaulic for presenting tabletops at the meeting. Both had
great tabletop displays and were eager to answer your questions and update you on
the latest products and advancements in the plumbing industry.
Hotel reservations can now be made for those planning on attending the 2008
Engineered Plumbing Exposition in Long Beach, Ca October 25-29. Convention
brochures are now being finalized and should be available on the ASPE website by
the time you read this newsletter. Don’t wait too long as the hotels closest to the
Convention will start filling up very quickly.
We still have some gifts left over from the last couple meetings. I would like to once
again open the doors and invite any non-members that may be interested in Plumbing
Engineering. All non-members get their choice of available prizes including a few
remaining “Ride the ASPE Wave” caps promoting the upcoming Convention. In order
to qualify for the prizes you must RSVP prior to the meeting. Prizes are limited. If you
happen to miss out, maybe the steak dinner on the menu will satisfy your appetite!
The next ASPE Webinar scheduled for May 14 th is free to all ASPE members thanks
to the generous sponsorship by J.R. Smith. The cost for non-members will be
$129.95. The topic will be on Siphonic Roof Drainage Systems with John Rattenbury
of Vanderweil Engineering LLP presenting. ASPE continuing education credits are
approved by the state of Ohio. Each participant can earn 0.1 CEU or 1 PDH. Please
visit the ASPE web site at www.aspe.org to register. If you happen to take part in a
webinar I encourage you to take the time to thank the manufacturers who sponsor
these events. I am sure they would appreciate it.
We will be holding our annual election for Chapter Officers at the next meeting on
May 14 th . If you are interested in being on the board and want to run for a position
please let me know and I will be happy to get your name on the ballot.
At our final meeting this month ASSE will be presenting their annual awards to the
winners of the apprentice contest. I want to thank the members of ASSE for joining us
from month to month. We have built a great relationship throughout the years and I
look forward to another eventful year.
The Cleveland Chapter is proud to announce some upcoming events this summer!
Inside this month’s Newsletter you will find registration forms for the Lake County
Captains game on July 12 th as well as our annual Golf Outing on August 7th

From the President (Continued):
at Fowler’s Mill in Chesterland. A tour of the Garrett A. Morgan water plant is also scheduled for July 23 rd .
Look for more information on this one as details become available. We certainly hope you can participate in some of
these exciting events planned for the summer.
During the course of the summer break your newly elected Chapter Officers will be hard at work putting together the
agenda for the next fiscal year. One of the most challenging tasks is pulling together the topics for the seminars
throughout the year. If you have some ideas for possible topics and or know of someone who would make a great
speaker for a particular topic please let us know. The more feedback we receive from our members the better we can
develop seminars that will benefit all who attend.
We need to provide an accurate head count to Harry’s Steakhouse for those who will be attending the next Plumbing
Training Session as we are expecting a good turnout this month. Please send in your RSVP via email to Kevin
Noble at knoble@sbmce.com no later than noon on Friday, May 9 th. If you do not RSVP by this time, we cannot
guarantee that a meal or handout will be reserved for you.
See you at the meeting!
Michael Drab,
President, Cleveland Chapter
From V.P. Technical:
I would like to thank Dave Burns, with Anvil
International for being our guest speaker at the April
9, 2008 training session. The topic of the seminar
was Grooved Piping Systems. The presentation
outlined system applications for grooved piping, roll
grooved versus cut grooved connections,
installation processes, rigid versus flexible
couplings, material gasket types, types of gasket
lubricants, as well as the color coding of the
gaskets.
The May 14, 2008 seminar topic will be Plumbing
for Physically Challenged Individuals. The speaker
will be Bob Carter, with Zurn Plumbing Products.
Bob is a Product Manager with over 10 years of
experience.
Please confirm your reservation for this seminar by
noon of Friday, May 9, 2008 with Kevin Noble at
knoble@sbmce.com. If you have any questions
and/or comments about the seminars, please do not
hesitate to contact me at jvarga@sbmce.com.
From V.P. Legislative:
As the year goes by, we get closer and closer to the start of the 2008 Convention
and Engineered Plumbing Exposition that will be held in Long Beach, California from
October 25 th through October 29 th .
I have had the opportunity to attend a few conventions over the past few years and I
look forward to this latest one. The American Society of Plumbing Engineers puts
on a great show and it is only getting better.
There will be over 300 manufacturers in attendance that are more than willing to
show you their latest product or to just answer your questions. It’s a hands on
opportunity and so much can be learned from the experience.
After the product show, there are numerous seminars that ASPE sponsors. What better way to get caught up on the
latest trends and learn how plumbing systems are applied. The seminars are great way to learn some new things as
well as refresh your thoughts on some things that you may not have come across in some time.
I encourage everyone to consider attending the Convention this year. The manufacturer’s exposition is on a Monday
and the seminars follow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Go ahead and visit the ASPE website at www.aspe.org to find
out the latest in regards to the Convention. Society is finalizing the event so be sure to check out the website on a
regular basis.
