Joyce Cook Scholarship shares a legacy with future teachers Joyce Cook was known as a gifted instructor who had a passion for teaching. Her husband, Jerry, supported her love of teaching, and in her memory he continued that support by working with the Community Foundation of Howard County to establish the M. Joyce Cook Memorial Scholarship. Joyce earned her bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and her master’s in education from Manchester College. In 1963, she started teaching third grade at Burlington Elementary and taught until 1969 when she decided to stay home and care for her sons, Jay and Jon. She returned to follow her passion for teaching in 1982 and retired in 2001 as a first grade teacher at Northwestern Elementary School. Jay remembers his mother for her ability to improve the lives of others. “Every moment of her life was about making sure people around her, especially the children, were bettering themselves,” he said in a short biography about his mother. “She was a gifted instructor who turned her classroom into a magical land of learning for her precious students. From beginning to end, her physical life was a teaching moment.” The M. Joyce Cook Scholarship is awarded to Howard County students who are accepted into a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, ministry or the mission field. With the establishment of this scholarship, Joyce’s legacy reaches beyond her family and students. It allows the scholarship recipients to follow their passions and to follow Joyce’s example of teaching and loving others. The project provides activities to encourage youth of different ages to explore and perform various components of music. The Community Foundation of Howard County provided funding for the program. 27
Howard County Grants (Left) High school students participate in an outreach program offered through the Bridges to College Leadership Academy. Bridges programming motivates, trains and equips youth to become leaders in their schools and the community. The Community Foundation of Howard County provided funding for program supplies and leadership curriculum for the fiveweek summer program called Leader Treks. (Above) The Community Foundation of Howard County provided funding in support of the Friends of the Kokomo- Howard County Public Library Summer Reading Club. The club encourages youth to participate in various craft projects and performing arts programs that included a photography competition, knitting workshops, and poetry and writing competitions. Professional artists also entertained the children through creative performances. (Above) A youngster watches an instructor step through dance moves in the ArtReach program offered through Kokomo Urban Outreach. The Community Foundation of Howard County provided grant funding to help KUO reach under resourced children of the community. ArtReach provides classes in creative writing, art, keyboarding, drums, ceramics, and other cultural and fine art activities to children. 28
