Communion Breakfast Honors

Sunday, April 28
The 62nd annual Communion Breakfast will be Sunday, April 28. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the
Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 1007 Superior Avenue East, Cleveland, OH. The breakfast and presentation
of the award will be at noon at the Wyndham Cleveland at PlayhouseSquare, 1260 Euclid Avenue.
J. Packy Hyland ’60 (deceased) and Paul Wilkes ’56 will
be honored as this year’s merit award recipients. This award
is given to someone who distinguishes himself in his chosen field
of endeavor in a manner that brings renown to CLS.
Reservations can be made online or checks made payable to
CLAA can be sent to the Alumni Office. The cost is $22 for
adults and $17 for students. Reservations must be received by
April 19.
The Class of 1963 will also be honored on the occasion of
their 50th anniversary. They are invited as our guests (no
charge) in honor of their golden jubilee.

His average was a very
solid 171.
Through much of his adult life, Packy was an
entrepreneur. He attributed his business success to a
“more than casually competitive nature.” From 1960

and documentarian. His newly
released book The Art of Confession:
Renewing Yourself Through the
Practice of Personal Honesty is one
of America’s most respected writers
on religious belief and personal
spirituality. He is also the host,
writer, director or producer of
seven PBS documentaries.
His book, In Due Season: A
Catholic Life, was chosen by Publishers Weekly as one of 2009’s
100 outstanding books. In a review, PW called In Due Season “an
exquisite memoir that often reads like a novel.”

Brother Nurthen Campaign &
25th School Anniversary
Greetings to all alumni and friends of Cathedral Latin School. I would like to
congratulate Paul Wilkes ’56 and J. Packy Hyland ’60 on being selected as this
year’s Merit Award Recipients. I encourage you to attend our 62nd Annual
Communion Breakfast on April 28 at the Wyndham Hotel to honor Paul Wilkes
and J. Packy Hyland for their accomplishments since graduating from Cathedral
Latin School.
On behalf of the Alumni Association, I would like to thank
all of you who contributed to our annual dues in 2012
which amounted to $40,336 from 995 contributors. The
Honor Roll of all who contributed is listed in this issue.
This amounts to amazing support from our alums, family
and friends who keep our Cathedral Latin Legacy alive some
33 years after our beloved alma mater closed its doors. We
cannot keep our organization running without your support.
Our legacy also lives on through NDCL where the
Association and many alumni have made major
contributions and participated in numerous activities
to preserve our rich Latin heritage. This year marks the
25th Anniversary since the Association entered into
an agreement with the Sisters of Notre Dame to create
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School in 1988. Events are
being planned over the next year to celebrate NDCL’s
25th anniversary. Watch out for a special Cathedral Latin
Alumni Association event that is in the planning to be
celebrated on campus at NDCL.
It is becoming a bigger sacrifice than ever to send a child to
Catholic school. Many alumni are struggling to assure that
their children receive the gift that we received of a Catholic
education. This year the Association has launched a drive to
increase the Bro. Frank Nurthen Endowed Scholarship fund.
Please consider making a donation to the fund to help fellow
alums send their child to NDCL.
Mark your calendars for two other annual events: the 54th
Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at NDCL’s McGarry
Gym on Sept. 14 and the annual Golf Outing at Grantwood
Golf Course in Solon, OH on June 28. We also have our
annual trustees meeting at NDCL on June 11 where all
alumni are invited to attend.
We welcome any alumni who may be interested in joining
the association as a trustee. Please contact the office and join
us at a Trustees meeting. We always welcome new ideas!

through 1991, when Hyland Software
was founded, Packy held sales
positions with three Fortune 500
companies. He also started a few
successful companies of his own. Of
course, with corporate success comes
family moves. Packy and his family
lived in Chicago, Wisconsin, Texas,
Italy, Ireland and Cleveland (East and
West sides). Packy would laugh and
state, “Some say I was a white-collar
migrant worker.”
The fun-loving Irishman explains his
unusual name. “Packy is an Irish
nickname for Patrick. My father and I
both are ‘John Patrick,’ and my parents
did not want to call me Jr.”
In 1991, the Hyland’s unpacked their
bags for good, settling their family on
Cleveland’s west side. Hyland
Software was co-founded with his son,
John Patrick “Packy” Jr. Packy was
part of the team that transformed
Hyland Software from a two-man
operation in 1991 into a thriving,
global software company. He was
president of the company from 1991
to 1997. He stayed with the company
until 1999 and remained on its board
until 2007.
Today, there are three businesses run
by family members: Hyland Software,
OneLink Technical Services, and
Workflow.Com, all located in
Westlake.
Many of his family members also
graduated from Cathedral Latin. His
father, John, Class of 1930, his brother
Tom “T”, Class of 1964 and his
brother Jim, Class of 1978.
Packy passed away in May 2009. He is
survived by his wife, Charlene and
sons, Packy, Jr., Chris, and A.J., and
daughters, Kate Ashcraft and Micayla
Martin; as well as 23 grandchildren.
Friends remember him as the life of
the party — outgoing, friendly and
always ready with a funny story. He
was the kind of man who forged
strong relationships with people and
kept them for a lifetime.
Packy and his wife Charlene have a
special devotion to the Blessed Virgin
Mary. As an example of their devotion,
they contributed to a pair of beautiful
recognition benches on campus near
the statue of Mary.

Paul lectures across the country about
the role of religious belief in individual
lives as well the place and impact of
religion in public life. As a
commentator on religious issues, he has
appeared on all major television
networks.
Another book, In Mysterious Ways: The
Death and Life of a Parish Priest, was a
Book of the Month Club selection, and
won a Christopher Award. In addition
to MERTON, which aired on PBS,
Paul Wilkes was host, writer, and
associate producer of the acclaimed
television series, SIX AMERICAN
FAMILIES, which won a DuPont-
Columbia award for documentary
excellence.
He has written for numerous national
magazines, such as The New Yorker, The
Atlantic and The New York Times
Magazine, and is a former reporter for
the Baltimore Sun and the Boulder
(Colorado) Daily Camera.
He has been a visiting writer and guest
lecturer at Clark University, Columbia
University, the University of Pittsburgh,
College of the Holy Cross, Boston
University and Brooklyn College. He
was Welch Visiting Chair at Notre
Dame, and Distinguished Visiting
Professor at the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington.
Paul has been honored for his body of
work with a Distinguished Alumnus
Award from Columbia University’s
Graduate School of Journalism, where
he received his advanced degree, and
with a By-Line Award from Marquette
University, where he graduated.
In 2006, Paul founded Homes of Hope
India-U.S. to support orphanages and
schools for street children in India. He
is a co-founder of CHIPS (Christian
Help in Park Slope), a Brooklyn center
that has served the poor and homeless
young mothers and children for almost
forty years.
A practicing Catholic, active in his
parish, he lives in Wilmington, North
Carolina, with his wife, Tracy, who
founded DREAMS, an arts program
for at-risk children. The Wilkes have
two sons, Noah and Daniel.

1952
Gerald Fuerst retired with Cuyahoga
County Clerk of Courts after 37 years
of service.
William Feldkircher passed away on
May 2, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His exceptional athletic and scholastic
achievement at Cathedral Latin as
well as his outstanding record of
accomplishment post Latin will live
forever.
Bill was a ferocious defensive back
and a punishing and fleet power
runner enabling his football team to
achieve the 1943 and 1944 Charity
Game Championships along with a
1944 State Championship. He also
had outstanding basketball skills
which helped propel the 1944-45
team to capture Latin’s first City
Championship.
1955

Marty Piszczak retired after 43 years
of public service as Director with
Stella Walsh Recreation Center. He
will leave behind an inspiring legacy
of steadfast commitment to
Cleveland’s urban youth. Marty
encouraged the youth to follow their
dreams, never give up and to give
back to their communities. He will
stay active within the community as a
board member to Slavic Village
Development.
Greg Zerovnik has been appointed
Chair and Professor of the online
MBA program for Touro University
Worldwide. Greg earned a BFA from
California College of the Arts, an
MBA in Executive Management from
the Drucker-Ito Graduate School of
Management at the Claremont
Graduate University, and an MA and
PhD in Psychology with a
concentration in Media Psychology
from the Fielding Graduate
University.
1964
Dr. Bill Shula has had the Marianist
influence in some way since 1960.
After his graduation, Bill attended the
University of Dayton and taught
graduate courses for nearly 15 years.
Since 2001, he has been working at
an elementary Marianist School in
Cincinnati.
1966
Bernie Ochmann retired after 28 years
with The Honeywell Corporation and
7 years with The Board of Child Care.
The Class of 1966 will have a
gathering on Friday, July 26 starting
with golf at Berkshire Country Club
followed by dinner. More details to

Dominic DiMarco was elected
President of Cranbrook Educational
Community in July 2012. Prior to
this position, he served as CEO and
Treasurer in 2008. Cranbrook is an
internationally renowned educational
community dedicated to excellence in
the arts, education and science and is
located Michigan.
1979
Tom Woods was elected to the
Montana state legislature in 2012.
Faculty
Brother Francis Deibel, S.M., the
nation’s oldest vowed religious man
passed away in July 2012 in Dayton,
OH. He was weeks away from
turning 104 and celebrating 86 years
since taking his vows into the Society
of Mary. Bro. Deibel taught religion
and English at Latin in the 1930’s and
1940’s.

Golf Outing – Friday, June 28
Dust off your clubs and take some swings so
you’re ready for our annual Golf Outing. It will
be Friday, June 28 at Grantwood Golf Course,
38855 Aurora Road in Solon. The driving range
will be open at 8:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun
start at 9:30 a.m. Winking Lizard will serve lunch
at the turn, followed by dinner after golf.
Cost is $115 per golfer, which includes driving range, golf with cart,
lunch, dinner and beverages. If you would like to attend dinner only, the
cost is just $30.
We encourage you to make your reservation as soon as possible because this
outing sells out quickly. Secure your reservation by mailing a check made
payable to CLAA to the alumni office or register online by credit card.
Association Kicks Off Bro. Frank Nurthen
Endowed Scholarship Drive
The Alumni Association is
spearheading a campaign
drive to raise money for
the Bro. Frank Nurthen
Endowed Scholarship
Fund. This fund presently
stands at approximately
$119,240, which needs
to be increased $160,000.
This campaign effort is the
result of a growing need
for tuition assistance for
NDCL students who are
direct descendents of Cathedral Latin alums. Each year, the
association awards two deserving freshman in financial need
scholarship assistance that is renewed each of the four years
they attend NDCL.
The Bro. Frank Nurthen Endowed Scholarship was
established by the Association in 1988 to honor and preserve
the memory of a man who epitomizes the spirit of the
Marianist Order and Cathedral Latin School. Brother Frank
unselfishly devoted his entire life to making young students
realize their potential and took a personal interest in the
thousands of young men he helped who walked the halls on
E. 107th Street.
In addition to being an educator, advisor and administrator
at Cathedral Latin, he also served 30 years as moderator
for the Alumni Association. As we celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School this
year, it should be remembered Bro. Nurthen’s participation
at the schools opening ceremonies, thus fulfilling a dream to
carry on the Latin spirit.

2012 Hall of Fame
The 53rd annual Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony was celebrated
on September 1 at NDCL’s Library/Media Center. Nearly 100 guests
attended the event honoring Michael Iacampo ’73 and the 1954
Football Team. Joining them were NDCL’s inductees Patty (Rubal)
Taneja ’97, Joe Mohner ’98 and NDA’s inductee Rosie Gornik ’69.
Alumni, parents, friends, and family enjoyed a BBQ dinner catered by
the Winking Lizard and paid tribute to the athletes.

NDCL launches
Notre Dame Circle
for Estate Gifts
NDCL’s Estate Giving program,
called the Notre Dame Circle,
launched late last year and
continues to add Charter
Members through June 30, 2013.
To date, 13 Cathedral Latin
alumni are included in the
membership of the Notre Dame
Circle. These thoughtful
individuals have made provisions
in their estate plans for a bequest,
insurance policy, retirement
benefits, or other assets to be
gifted to NDCL for its
endowment.
“The estate gifts come in all shapes
and sizes,” says NDCL’s Major
Gifts Officer Keven Krajnak ’98.
“We are very fortunate to have
several Latin alumni respond
favorably in this effort.” The
school’s recent $2 million gift from
the estate of Eugene T. Baker ’37 is
one example of the alumni
generosity to the school through
Estate Giving.

The 22nd Annual Lion’s Mane

in the McGarry Gym. The CL
Alumni Association will be the

event. This is NDCL’s largest
fundraising and the proceeds benefit
student scholarships at the school.

Eugene Baker ’37 gifts $2 million to NDCL
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School has received $2
million, the largest single gift in the school’s history from
Eugene T. Baker ’37. This gift is a visible confirmation
of his continuous commitment to the mission of NDCL.
His total giving to NDCL exceeds $3.5 million.
Baker graduated from John Carroll University and began
his career with the Erie Railroad. In his forties, he started
his own business, The GEM Coal Company, which was a
major catalyst in the business of coal brokering in the
Midwest.
He died on September 8, 2012 in Atlantis, Florida at the
age of 92. His estate provides two million dollars to
supplement The Joanne T. and Eugene T. Baker
Endowed Scholarship and The Mr. and Mrs. T. A.
Baker Memorial Scholarship. The two scholarships
honor his parents and late wife. The third scholarship, The
Victoria Foley Baker and Eugene T. Baker Scholarship,
established in 2006, honors his wife, Victoria. These funds
make it possible for students to attend NDCL by
providing tuition assistance to those with demonstrated
financial need.

In October 2012, the new gymnasium on NDCL’s campus
was named Eugene T. Baker Gymnasium as a tribute to
Mr. Baker for his gifts and commitment to Catholic
education at NDCL.
Lozick Field at Lion Stadium
In August 2012, Sr. Jacquelyn Gusdane had the privilege and joy of announcing
the name of the new all-purpose field – Lozick Field at Lion Stadium. A sign was
installed above the press box. Lozick Field was named for Edward Lozick, class of
1955, a staunch supporter of NDCL.
Fr. Dan Schlegel blessed the new track and synthetic turf athletic field on August
24, 2012. A Mass was held for students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni as they
gathered on the newly completed Lozick Field at Lion Stadium.
