Charcoal drawing of life model by Sven Frøkjær-Jensen of Denmark
With an approach to making
art that has a strong philosophical
edge, he explains that his goal
as an artist is “to build a bridge
between different worlds of expression,
to span the abyss between the
diversity of human minds, and to
reach out for the sublime.” During
the workshop, Mr. Frøkjær- Jensen
will be sharing aspects of his own
creative process, and will take
the participants through drawing
exercises with the life model in
order to discover and explore possible
creative avenues which he has
found to be “a great source of joy
and understanding.”
Whitebird Gallery
Glass artist JOSHUA RODINE is one of numerous artists
featured at the Whitebird Gallery for Spring Unveiling.
Delicate glass sculptures and elegant vessels, Rodine’s fine
glasswork is created with the flamework method allowing
the artist to achieve much more detail and control than traditional
glassblowing. Rodine’s motifs exemplify the organic
beauty of the natural world, with patterns, textures and
colors that explore the human relationship to our planet.
Barbara Mallon:
Encaustic Technique
Exhibit and Workshop
at Trails End
June 2
Long Beach Artist Barbara Mallon
will be on hand at Trails End Art
Association on Saturday, June 2nd,
from 3:00 – 6:00 PM during the
First Saturday Art Walk demonstrating
her encaustic and mixed
media techniques. Encaustic is a
painting done with heated, colored
beeswax. She’ll demonstrate
basic forms such as tulips - and
show the versatility of layering and
working with wax on several panels
and show how the process lends
itself to both realistic and abstract
pieces.
In addition, Mallon has been
named “Artist of the Month” for
June at Trails End and will have 15
encaustic paintings on exhibit.
The Encaustic process dates
back to ancient Egypt and can be
seen in lifelike facial images on
sarcophaguses, as well as other
artwork treasures. Mallon says
that along with beeswax and pigments,
she likes to incorporate
foils, beads, and other collage
materials into her work. “What’s
so good about encaustic is you
can imbed a variety of different
types of material into the work, as
you move forward,” she says. She
sometimes uses materials that give
a “see-through” effect using five or
more layers.
Mallon will be offering an
Encaustic Workshop at Trails End
Art Association on Friday and
Saturday, August 17 and 18 from
9:30AM – 3:30 PM both days .
Check the Trails End website for
further details.
Trails End Art Association is
