Giving to St. Francis .....................................................40
Alumni, parents, grandparents,
trustees, friends, faculty and staff:
It is with a joyful heart that I express my gratitude for all
that you have provided St. Francis Episcopal Day School.
You continue to be a crucial part of providing an extraordinary
educational experience for our students and upholding
the mission of this fine institution.
Our community provided more than $756,000 in annual
fund contributions, and $974,231 in overall giving during
the 2007-2008 school year. Through your gifts, St. Francis
continues to live up to its well-established traditions of
academic excellence and providing an environment that helps
to raise students who are people for others.
Our students’ achievements are rooted in the sustained
support and involvement of the St. Francis community.
Your contributions to annual fund and capital gifts have
helped to make these opportunities possible.
Among the many areas of our school that have benefited
from your giving dollars this year, the following are just
a few examples of your gifts at work. Thanks to your
generous gifts, we were able to:
• Provide additional classroom supplies and support
• Send more teachers to valuable, pertinent training
• Enhance security to safeguard our campus and students
• Present students with the opportunity to enter and
participate in national academic competitions
• Give the lasting gift of education through student
scholarships
• Enrich student learning through the renovation of
the Crum Library
On behalf of the faculty, staff and students, thank you
for supporting the continued growth of our school.
Sincerely,
Susan B. Lair, Ph.D.
Deep in the Art of Texas
The St. Francis entry for the Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo’s Mustang Mania 2008 was dazzling. The
student group decided on a western heritage theme.
One side of the mustang depicts a sunset scene with
a herd of wild mustangs racing across the western
plains, signifying the end of the untamed west. The
Above the sun scenes and arching over the mustang’s
There is even an NASA astronaut tethered to
wind up the mustang’s hooves and legs so as to attach
him to the soil of his western roots. The mustang,
on permanent display on the primary school lawn, is
titled “Deep in the Art of Texas,” and was carried out
in the pointillism technique.
A New Tradition of Giving
Barker’s Pajamarama had its inception this year in
primary school. Primary school students collected
and paired pajamas with books to donate to the
Pajama Program, a national program that works with
agencies in the U.S. and abroad to provide new, warm
pajamas and books to children in need, some of whom
are waiting and hoping to be adopted. Fifth grade
student Taylor Ly orchestrated the pajama drive as a
service project. Ly said he hopes the younger students
will enjoy the experience so that they will remember
that it is good to help others in need.
Celebrating America’s Traditions
To honor and experience the past, present and
future of all things Texas, the primary school staged
a “Texas State Fair.” Children experienced all of the
components of the Texas State Fair, combining events
of county fairs with our own Houston Livestock Show
and Rodeo. The day was filled with a “kidway” with
games old and new, rodeo motor events, music and
dance, a livestock exhibit, art show and even a bake-off!

of Board governance is
eligible for nomination and may
Focused on the Future
Meeting the Needs of Today
Carol Por ter, J.D., Chairman of the Board of Trustees
When my oldest daughter presented the eighth grade tie to her younger sister this year
at the St. Francis eighth grade tie ceremony, she said, “Enjoy St. Francis while you can.”
While some of her sentiment may have been motivated by nostalgia for younger years,
she was primarily motivated by the incredible and, sometimes intangible, aspects of a
St. Francis education.
Last spring the families of St. Francis responded to a survey asking about the possibility of
adding a high school to the current St. Francis program. We received 415 responses from
the survey, with 74.9% of the respondents stating they were “leaning toward” or “strongly
want” to add a high school. The board of trustees reviewed this survey and will include
the results of the study in its long-term vision for the future growth and expansion of
St. Francis Episcopal Day School. Included within the possibilities the Board is considering
this year are the renovation of the primary school, the expansion of our athletic facilities
and the long-term goal of the addition of a high school. Imagine what our award-winning
athletic teams could achieve with a state-of-the-art stadium, track, baseball field, dedicated
field hockey and lacrosse fields, and an indoor gym. Imagine further those eighth graders
receiving their ties knowing they can extend the St. Francis experience beyond the eighth
grade.
In addition to the long-term capital needs of St. Francis, the board of trustees is working
diligently this year on improving the future of St. Francis by focusing on diversity and
financial assistance. We do not intend to simply formulate policies about diversity and
financial assistance, put them on the web site, then move on. Diversity will be incorporated
into every aspect of St. Francis campus life, from employment practices to curriculum
in academics, the arts, religion, and athletics. The board of trustees is also committed
to formulating a policy on financial assistance that will embody the phrase, “people for
others.” In support of that policy, the board of trustees will increase the financial assistance
budget in an effort to become a leader among area independent schools in terms of
the percentage of the student body receiving assistance and the percentage of the budget
devoted to this purpose. If St. Francis is to continue to distinguish itself, these two goals
are paramount.
For more than fifty years, St. Francis has responded to the needs and capabilities of each
student, providing opportunities for growth and achievement in a Christian community
with the beliefs and traditions of the Episcopal Church. As we embark on the future,
we celebrate our mission and guiding principles and affirm the heritage and traditions of
St. Francis Episcopal Day School, which serve as the foundation of our future endeavors.
We understand that the next phase of our history will require both tradition and innovation
as we prepare students to lead fulfilling and meaningful lives as responsible citizens
and capable leaders.
Carol Porter is chairman of the St. Francis Episcopal Day School Board of Trustees,
as well as an attorney for the Fourteenth Court of Appeals state appellate court. She
is responsible for drafting opinions and handling administrative matters for nine
judges. She has also taught legal writing to first-year law students at the University
of Houston and drafted opinions for Justice Carlton B. Dodson of the Seventh Court
of Appeals in Amarillo, Texas. She is a graduate of Baylor University and is married
with two daughters – Laura ’06 and Abby ’09.
Endowed Investing
John H. Duncan, Jr., Chairman of the Investment Committee, ‘69
As chairman of the Board’s Investment Committee, and sponsor of the school’s Investment Club,
I am often asked about the school’s investments and, in particular, our Endowment. To provide a
better understanding about the important role our Endowment plays in the school’s finances, I have
prepared the following questions and answers.
What is an Endowment?
The technical definition of an Endowment is “funds or property donated to an institution,
individual, or group to create an investment that will provide a source of income.” Typically, gifts
to Endowment are held in perpetuity, that is to say that the earnings from the gift may be spent, but
the corpus, the original gift, must remain in tact. At St. Francis Episcopal Day School, the Endowment
is made up partially from permanently restricted donations, but it also consists of funds that
the Board of Trustees has discretion over to best serve the mission of the school.
What are the goals of the St. Francis Endowment?
The Board has established a policy through which the Endowment supports the school’s operating
fund annually. The school follows a conservative policy of drawing only 3% of the Endowment’s
three-year trailing average balance for this purpose. This policy allows the school to have a predictable
source of income annually while permitting the Endowment itself to grow.
How are gifts to the Endowment different from gifts to the Annual Fund?
Both have as their primary purpose supporting the school’s operating fund. Gifts given to the
Annual Fund are used in the following year by the school. Gifts to the Endowment have a greater
impact on the school’s long-term goals and continue to provide support year after year.
Who manages the Endowment?
The Endowment is managed by the Board of Trustees Investment Committee with the assistance of
investment specialists. The Committee currently retains two financial consulting groups to assist in
the day-to-day management of the Endowment and to provide counsel toward future investments.
Overall our approach is conservative and focused on long-term stable growth that provides for
future generations of St. Francis students. The Investment Committee also operates within an asset
allocation matrix approved by the Board.
How are gifts to the Endowment received?
Donations designated to the St. Francis Episcopal Day School Endowment are immediately invested
in the unrestricted portion of the Endowment. Stocks, bonds, and other items for which a donor
does not want to pay capital gains tax may also be donated directly to the Endowment in their
current form. The school’s policy is to sell securities immediately and invest the proceeds. The
donor receives the full, fair market value of the gift on the date the contribution is received by
St. Francis and a corresponding charitable income tax deduction.
The St. Francis Endowment is comparatively young and will need continued investment to grow.
The school’s annual operating fund is presently eleven million, and it is recommended that a
sufficient endowment equal at least two and a half times an organization’s annual budget. The
Endowment is currently less than eleven million and therefore provides only a small portion of the
school’s annual income. However, with the support of the community and continued prudent investment
and growth, the Endowment can be a key component in providing ongoing stable support for
our school.
For more information on giving to the Endowment please contact the
Director of Major Gifts, Laurie Bilger, J.D. at lbilger@sfedshouston.org.
Johnny Duncan is chairman of the Investment Committee. He holds an MBA from Southern
Methodist University and a BBA in finance from the University of Texas at Austin. He is
married with three daughters who are all St. Francis graduates.
Strategic Financial Planning
Patricia N. Turner, J.D., Finance Committee Chair
The Board is charged with furthering the school’s mission and ensuring long-term
financial stability. Furthermore, the Board is entrusted to be guardians of, and provide
a vision for, the school’s future. As such, the core activity of the Board is planning,
not only for today’s students but the students of the future. Mindful of this charge,
the Board is once again preparing and updating the St. Francis Episcopal Day School
Strategic Financial Plan. The Board worked on the school’s initial six-year strategic
plan in 2006; however, the needs of the school and the community it encompasses
have changed since that time, and the Board feels it is time to update the plan.
The Strategic Financial Plan focuses on viability related issues, primarily relating
to money, organizational structures, and facilities that are relative to, but separate
from, curriculum, student programs and instruction. The Strategic Financial Plan
also takes into account stability markers set out by Independent School Management
(ISM), which provide a guide for predicting the school’s ability to sustain programmatic
excellence over time.
The end goal of the Strategic Financial Plan is to provide the school and its leaders
with a comprehensive road map for the future of the school. This should in turn
offer a framework within which the short-term and long-term goals of the school can
be met, while providing guidance and stability for tuition, facilities, and faculty salaries.
By putting this framework in place ahead of time, decisions large and small can
be made easily and ensure that excellence in the classroom can be sustained.
In developing this plan, the Board will review the current and future needs of the
school along with the concerns of its constituency, the market, and the school’s
mission. We value your trust and thank you for your support.
Patricia “Patti” Turner is the chairman of
finance for St. Francis Episcopal Day School.
She is the owner/operator of Truluck’s Restaurant
Group. Previously she practiced as
an attorney with several local law firms. She
received a juris doctorate from South Texas
College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political
science from State University of New
York College at Buffalo. Patti is married with
three children. Her twins are eighth-graders at
St. Francis and her stepson is a U.S. Marine.
to express heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of Annual Fund donors
listed on the following pages. This thanks is offered on behalf of the 800+
students attending St. Francis Episcopal Day School. We all know that
St. Francis is a special and blessed place that nurtures young people,
ignites creative minds, and builds character and poise. No single fundraising
effort supports our mission better than the Annual Fund.
Simply put, Annual Fund is about teaching and learning. The parents,
grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, and friends of the school
who give each and every year are the pillars of our campaign. The school
counts on you to help bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the
actual cost of educating our students the St. Francis way. Thanks to your
active partnership, our students receive a well-rounded and exciting
education from top-notch teachers.
I was once told that tuition is the apple, and Annual Fund is the polish
on the apple. Thank you for making our program shine!
SARAH W. WooLRICH FUND
Inspired teaching is often what makes the difference between a child merely
attending school and one who truly enjoys learning. It is in this spirit that
St. Francis Episcopal Day School established the Sarah W. Woolrich Fund for
Faculty — designed to enhance the educational experience of our students by
first expanding the horizons of our teachers.
This fund is dedicated to our school’s first principal, Sarah (“Sally” as she is
known to many) Woolrich. Mrs. Woolrich made a life of teaching, guiding
and inspiring the futures of her St. Francis students. It was her belief that
there is a moment for each child when the “light bulb goes on.” Finding this
for her students was Sally Woolrich’s mission. She encouraged her teachers to
bring elements from the world into their classrooms in order to reach into the
imaginations of our children and make learning come to life.
In keeping with this philosophy, the Sarah W. Woolrich Fund for Faculty
provides funding to provide special learning opportunities for faculty and
staff members of the school. Each year awards are made from the Woolrich
Fund to underwrite unique professional development opportunities ranging
from teaching skills and curriculum development to travels abroad. In fact,
with the support of the St. Francis community, more than 37 teachers have
benefited from Woolrich Fund awards — bringing back invaluable skills and
experiences for our children. Students hear first-hand accounts of Spanish
life, retrace the steps of Christ in the Holy Land, and are exposed to cutting
edge technology as a result of the Woolrich Fund.
My experience to travel to Israel was one I will never
forget. I want to thank each one of you for making my
trip possible and allowing me to walk where Jesus ministered.
As I look back on my experience, I am excited to
share with the kids the places I was able to see and the
lessons I learned – from the boat ride on the Sea of Galilee,
reading Matthew 5 on the Mount of Beatitudes, walking
down Massada, floating in the Dead Sea, Qumran, praying
at the Garden of Gethsemane, reading Psalm 23 at
the Shepherds field, crossing the border to Jordan, walking
around Petra, and so many more experiences I could
write about. When I read the Bible I can now say I have
been in some of those places and share that experience
with others. I thank you again for allowing me to have a
life changing experience and pray the kids will learn from
my journey!
Library
Club
There is no greater gift to give a child than
a passion for reading. For it is within the
pages of a book that the imagination of a
child comes to life. It is where the impossible
becomes plausible and where dreams
take flight. In reading, children begin
to learn about and interact with a world
outside their own and gain an inherent
awareness of others.
To create excitement around reading is to
create of lifelong passion for knowledge. It
is for this reason that the Library Club was
created, and remains, a trademark of the St.
Francis Episcopal Day School program.
Gifts made to Library Club enable the St.
Francis Crum Library to purchase age-
appropriate books and technology to enrich
the library’s existing collection. Materials
purchased with Library Club contributions
have a special nameplate affixed on the inside
cover indicating the name of the honoree.
When a student is honored, he or she
is invited to have the book read aloud to
his/her class, or to be the first to check the
book out of the library. These special books
then become a permanent part of the Crum
Library collection.
There are few people unable to name a book
that has had a lasting impression on their life
and success. The opportunity to share this
gift makes Library Club donations an especially
popular gift for children’s birthdays,
special occasions or as acknowledgement of
teachers and staff.
To learn more about the Library Club, or make a
donation, please contact Stacy Allen at 713.458.6129
or sallen@sfedshouston.org.
would like to thank the Class of 2008
for the generous gift of two
Fine Arts Center!
Graduation speech by Calhan Hale
Good evening and welcome to the graduation ceremony of the
greatest class ever to walk the halls of St. Francis. As one of
my best friends told me recently, “Don’t cry because it’s ended;
laugh because it happened.” I’m Calhan Hale, and it has been
my absolute privilege to be a part of the class of 2008. Tonight,
let us not be sad about the separation of such an amazing class,
but let us celebrate our many accomplishments. While we have
had many individual achievements in the world of PSIA, region
choir, athletics, visual arts, and academics, our class is
defined by its unity.
Our class is a very accomplished one. We have put on two
amazing plays: Jailhouse Rock in fourth grade and The Best
Christmas Pageant Ever in eighth grade. We also put on one
phenomenal musical called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, which, I must say, -- to beat Mrs. Chisholm to
the chase -- was the best musical St. Francis has ever had. We
survived Hurricane Rita and were people for others by serving
as a refuge for those escaping the hardships of Hurricane
Katrina. We helped raise over $25,000 to aid the victims of
the 2005 tsunami. We painted a 6-foot-tall fiberglass mustang
and won third place in the Rodeo Contest. We were a part of
the Varsity Choir that won state five years in a row. There are
many more things our grade has done, but we all know what
an outstanding group of people this has been, and will be in
the future.
Out of our many accomplishments, Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat was definitely a standout. The opening
night was truly one to remember. When we broke from circle
backstage, Mr. Linhart instructed us to be silent and to take
our places. Being backstage on opening night was a very different
feeling from anything I’ve ever experienced before. The cast
and crew were all one big family. Many of us were hugging and
saying how much we loved each other. It was an overwhelming
feeling because we were so excited. Yet, we all knew there was
only so much time to say all these things before the moment we
had all been waiting for arrived. That night, I tried to describe
to my parents how we felt backstage before the curtains opened.
The feeling, I said, was similar to how I think I’ll feel just before
I die and go to heaven. That’s just how I think it will be:
overwhelmed by the desire to say how much we love one another
before it’s too late, and yet, so excited for what is to come.
I didn’t really think how graduation might relate to these feelings.
Graduation is what we’ve all been working toward during
our years at St. Francis. Now that it’s here, we realize how
hard we’ve worked, how much we have loved, and how much
we have been loved. As the curtain opens on the next chapter
for all of us, I think that we, the class of 2008, will take this
love and these experiences with us into the next opening night
of our lives: high school.
A thread of memories has woven each of our childhoods together,
and this same strand of recollections is what will tie
our futures together as well. As we go our separate ways, we
will still be connected by these memories that have wound us so
closely together in our years at St. Francis.
Class of 2008, it is opening night once again. I hope we can go
out and embrace our futures with great enthusiasm, but never
forget where we came from. Thank you, St. Francis and class
of 2008.
Prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
