Germany (German: Deutschland IPA: [dɔɪtʃlant]), officially the Federal Republic of
Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, IPA: [bʊndəsrepublik dɔɪtʃlant]), is a
country in Central Europe. It is bordered on the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and
the Baltic Sea, on the east by Poland and the Czech Republic, on the south by Austria
and Switzerland, and on the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Capital: Berlin.
Germany is a democratic parliamentary federal republic of 16 states (Bundesländer).
The country previously consisted of several sovereign states with their own history,
culture, and religious affiliation. Germany was first unified as a nation-state amidst the
Franco-Prussian War in 1871.Divided into four zones of occupation (UK, US, USSR, and
later, France) in 1945 following World War II; Federal Republic of Germany (FRG or West
Germany) proclaimed 23 May 1949 and included the former UK, US, and French zones;
German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) proclaimed 7 October 1949 and
included the former USSR zone; unification of West Germany and East Germany took
place 3 October 1990; all four power rights formally relinquished 15 March 1991.

The Federal Republic of Germany is a member state of the United Nations, NATO, the
G8 and the G4 nations, and is a founding member of the European Union. It has the
largest population and largest economy of all European Union member states.[1] Germany
is both the world‘s third largest economy (after the United States and Japan) and
its largest exporter of goods.

The scenery in the Alps of southern Bavaria
Frankfurt am Main – popularly referred to as
„Mainhattan“ – is Germany‘s financial centre.
Germany has been the home of some of the most prominent researchers in various
scientific fields. The work of Albert Einstein and Max Planck was crucial to the foundation
of modern physics, which Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger developed
further. They were preceded by such key physicists as Hermann von Helmholtz, Joseph
von Fraunhofer, and Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit, among others. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen
discovered X-rays, an accomplishment that made him the first winner of the Nobel Prize
in Physics in 1901. Heinrich Rudolf Hertz‘s work in the domain of electromagnetic radiation
were pivotal to the development of modern telecommunication. Wilhelm Wundt
is credited with the establishment of psychology as an independent empirical science
through his construction of the first laboratory at the University of Leipzig in 1879.
Alexander von Humboldt‘s work as a natural scientist and explorer was foundational to
biogeography. Numerous important mathematicians were born in Germany, including
Gauss, Hilbert, Riemann, Weierstrass and Weyl. Germany has been the home of many
famous inventors and engineers, such as Johannes Gutenberg, who is credited with the
invention of movable type printing in Europe; Hans Geiger, the creator of the Geiger
counter; and Konrad Zuse, who built the first computer. German inventors, engineers
and industrialists such as Zeppelin, Daimler, Diesel, and Benz helped shape modern automotive
and air transportation technology.
Sport forms an integral part of German life, as demonstrated by the fact that 27 million
Germans are members of a sports club and an additional twelve million pursue such an
activity individually. Football is by far the most popular sport, and the German Football
Federation (Deutscher Fussballbund) with more than 6.3 million members is the largest
athletic organisation in the country. It also attracts the greatest audience, with hundreds
of thousands of spectators attending Bundesliga matches and millions more watching on
television. The other two most popular sports in Germany are marksmanship and tennis
represented by the German Marksmen’s Federation and the German Tennis Federation
respectively, both including more than a million members. Other popular sports include
handball, volleyball, basketball, and ice hockey. Germany has historically been one of
the strongest contenders in the Olympic Games. In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Germany
finished sixth overall, whereas in the 2006
Winter Olympics Germany finished first.
Opened in 2005: the Allianz Arena, one of the world‘s
most modern football stadiums.

Development of the Movement in Germany
Ring Deutscher Pfadfinderinnenverbände was formerly composed of four separate Girl
Guide Associations: Bund Deutscher Pfadfinderinnen, Evangelischer Mädchenpfadfinderbund,
Bund Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen in Bavaria and Pfadfinderinnenschaft St.
Georg.
In 1973 the Evangelischer Mädchenpfadfinderbund, Bund Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen
and Christliche Pfadfinderschaft Deutschlands (Protestant Boy Scouts) merged to form
the Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder (VCP) (Christian Girl Guide
and Boy Scout Association). In 1975 the Bund Deutscher Pfadfinderinnen and Bund der
Pfadfinder (Scout Association) also merged to become the Bund der Pfadfinderinnen
und Pfadfinder (BdP) (Association of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts). This was the situation
up until 1990 when the historic reunification of Germany took place. This event had
direct repercussions within all the German Associations.Guiding had existed throughout
the entire State of Germany prior to its division following the Second World War, and
now the path lay open for its reestablishment in the former Democratic Republic of Germany
once again.

Bund der Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder (BdP)
(Association of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts)
The BdP is an inter-denominational merged Association and partner
in the RDP (Union of German Girl Guide Associations). The Association
is open to all girls and boys. It has teams of male and female leaders
at all levels, and local groups have the right to decide whether
they wish to work in mixed or in separate groupings. Girls and boys can take part in
activities from the age of 7 years.
In the youngest section, from 7 to 11 years, they are called ‘Wölflinge’ (Cubs/Brownies).
Playing is the focus of their activities, and in their weekly meeting or at camps,
there is never a dull moment for them.
Many interests are covered
in the Guide /
Scout section from 12 to
16 years. Hikes, travelling,
and camps are introduced
as major outdoor
activities for this
age group. In the ‘Sippe’
(patrol), the small
unit in the Scout /Guide
section (Pfadfinderstufe),
young people are
encouraged to develop
their independence and
self-reliance.
Those over 16 years,
in the Ranger / Rover
section, are widely selfsupporting
in their activities. They look beyond the realm of the group, and are active
in caring for the environment and the community.
Adults find their place in BdP as leaders, in lobby groups, as sponsors or specialists who
help the group out on special occasions. Activities help to acquire technical, physical,
musical, social, and spiritual abilities; help to develop an individual personality and gain
self-confidence; facilitate living and problem solving in a group; strengthen the ability
to take over responsibility, political awareness, openness and creativity; and heighten
awareness of the environment and one´s own community.
As Guides and Scouts, they are active in projects for their society and the environment.
The emphasis is not only to contribute international partnership on a bilateral basis with
Poland and Kazakhstan, but also on working closely with strong youth work to enable
girls and boys to find their place in society and develop their fullest potential as world
citizens.
The Association publishes three quarterly periodical; LOGO! (a magazine for all members),
Neue Briefe (a leaders´magazine with discussion groups, essays and a high level
of information) and Bundesrundbrief (a leaders´newsletter with invitations to workshops,
seminars, the International Bulletin and plenty of actual news.

Pfadfinderinnenschaft Sankt Georg (PSG)
(Girl Guide Association of St. George)
The PSG (Pfadfinderinnenschaft St. Georg) was founded in 1947 as
the Association of Catholic Guides in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Today it is open to all girls and young women who agree with the
aims of the Association and are willing to work within our groups towards
the realization of our goals.
The work of the St. George Girl Guides encompasses three aspects: we are Guides, we
are girls and young women, and we are Catholic.

That we are Guides, means to „be prepared“, that is, that we seek to recognise the
needs of people in society, to develop the fullest potential of every single Guide, and
to take responsibility in the world.
That we are girls and women means that we work in accordance with the needs of
girls and young women, enabling them to learn to act on their own behalf. The PSG
takes the part of girls and young women in society.
That we are Catholic means that we stand in the tradition of the gospel of Jesus
Christ, which the Association understands as a message closely related to life and
which leads to freedom.
On this basis, doubt as well as faith can be lived out in the groups of the Association.
Within the Church, the PSG stands up for girls and women and for those who experience
discrimination in the Church. Immigrants, as well as girls and women with disabilities
also take part in the groups of the PSG.
Training for leaders within the Association is organized at regional level, and consists of
a combination of seminars and supervised practice. The training programme is divided
into general and specialized parts for specific branch issues. The formation of trainers, a
responsibility of the national board, is more extensive and includes a training camp. The
Association encourages community development projects, and has a triennial campaign
dedicated to the support of relevant projects in Germany and abroad. The PSG cooperates
with other European Girl Guide / Girl Scout Associations and the International
Catholic Conference of Guiding (ICCG).
Since 1980 the association maintains a partnership with the Association of Guides in
Rwanda (AGR). This partnership was upheld even in the midst of the civil war and genocide
in Rwanda, a fact that demonstrates the cohesion and trust between the two
associations. Time and again clans or dioceses organise events to gather money to help
support the work of the AGR.
The Association receives good press coverage of important events and publishes two
periodicals: Spunx and Olave. The PSG is a member of the Bund Deutscher Katholischer
Jugend (BDKJ) (Association of Catholic Youth), and is represented in the Deutscher
Bundesjugendring (DBJR) (German Federal
Youth Council) by the RDP.

The PSG-Uniform
The uniform of the PSG is similar for all ages. Everyone
wears a light blue blouse with a dark blue scarf.
The coloured stripe on the scarf varies depending
on the age group. It is yellow for Brownies, blue for
Guides, green for Caravelles, red for Rangers and
bordeaux for leaders. There are different promise
badges for each age group. All but the Rangers’ promise
badge are blue with gold, the Rangers’ promise
badge is silver.

Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder (VCP)
(Christian Girl Guide and Boy Scout Association)
The VCP is a Protestant merged Association for girls and boys
of all denominations. Most of the groups are mixed at all age
levels, and leadership training is carried out on a co-educational
basis. Through a special voting system, every member participates
in decisionmaking at the annual general assembly of the Association.
Faith plays an important part in the programme of the VCP and members are
involved in a broad range of activities, mainly organized at regional level. These include
working with socially deprived
groups, campaigning for the rights of children in society, aiding community development,
and the protection of nature.

Uniform
It is a protestant tradition to wear plain dresses without any decorations. The uniform of
VCP includes a grey shirt and the blue-white badge on the left breast pocket. Brownies
have red scarves; guides, rangers and leaders have blue ones. Additional badges: camp
symbols or special activity badges for one year; German flag with European stars for
abroad events or journeys.
The VCP publishes a periodical for members „Auf neuem Pfad“ .
The VCP is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Evangelischer Jugend aej (Association
of Protestant Youth) and is represented in the Deutscher Bundesjugendring (German
Federal Youth Council). The VCP is also member of the Conference on Christianity in
Guiding and Scouting (CCGS).
Promises and Laws
The Association does not have one uniform Promise. On admission, the individual declares
her readiness for co-operation and acknowledges the common working group
rules.

Games from Germany
A salad of feet
Time: 10 minutes
The girls split up into two groups. One
group is turning around, so that they can
not see the
others. The girls of the second group take
off their shoes and put them together on
one big pile. Afterwards all the children
without shoes hide underneath blankets.
Only the feet are visible. The game is
particularly difficult if they put the legs
criss-cross together, not simply in pairs
next to each other. When they are done
the first group turns around and tries to
put the shoes back on as quick as possible.
Afterwards you can look at the result
and in all probability some shoes need to
be changed.
The tower of Babylon
Time: 15 minutes
Preliminary remark: Take care that no
dangerous objects get involved into the
building. If
necessary get involved with small corrections.
The children split up into groups of four
or five children. From there on each
group tries to build a tower out of material
in the room. Who manages to build the
highest tower without collapsing? If you
have tables you might need to exclude
them from the building material.
Passing a thing
Time: 5 minutes
Everyone is sitting in a circle. You need
some spoons lying in front of you. Take
one and pass it to your neighbour saying:
“ This is a thing”. The neighbour
asks back: “What is it?“ You answer “A
thing”. The neighbour takes the spoon
and passes it on to the next person.
While one spoon is starting its way round,
you can pass another one to the other
side. Start calling it silly names such as a
“thong, thang etc.”. Already with as few
spoons wandering round it gets challenging
saying the right thing and passing it
on into the right direction. Keep adding
slowly spoons to the game until it ends in
a big chaos.
Here are the sentences in German if you
want to add some foreign language to
it:
“Dies ist ein Ding.” “Was ist das?” “Ein
Ding!”
Tiptoeing circle
Time: 10 minutes
Preliminary remark: The more children
are playing the more can tiptoe at the
same time.
All but two children are standing in a
circle having their eyes closed. The two
children tiptoe
slowly around the circle and stop behind
one of the children. Without reaching
back each girl
tries to find out if someone is behind her.
If she feels someone behind her, she asks
loud. If there is no answer she was wrong.
When she was right the girls change the
roles.

Slapping hands
Time: 5-10 minutes
Material: 1 chair/person, 1 table which
suits for all to sit around.
Preparations: All group members sit
around a table putting their flat hands on
the table.
Everyone than takes his left hand and
puts it over the right hand/arm of his left
neighbour. The result of this preparation
is that each member has two foreign
hands in front of herself.
It is agreed in the beginning that the direction
will be towards the left side in the
beginning.
Game: One person starts and slaps with
her hand 1x on the table. The hand left
to the slapping hand takes the signal and
slaps 1x too (this is now Person 3 (!)
with her right hand (!). Person 2 with her
left hand is next to slap an so forth. As
you may understand speed is one issue
in this game. The faster the better and
more fun.
If one girl either does not slap in a due
time or in wrong order this hand has to
leave the game for this round and the
game proceeds.
As one direction might be somewhat boring
after a while, slapping your hand
twice quickly means change of direction
(if it was to the left so far, it turns to the
right).
The game is over when there are only 1
person left.
Silent circle
Time: minimum 15 min.
Material: 1 (2) chair(s) less than members
of the group
1 (2) scarves to blindfold 1 (2) girl(s) depending
on size of the group
Preparations: Put all chairs in a circle with
only limited space between them.
The girl with the scarf is in the middle.
Everyone else sits on her chair. Those sitting
get themselves numbers equal to the
number of girls sitting (e.g. if 10 girls are
sitting the numbering is from 1 to 10). As
soon as the girl in the middle got blindfolded
all other girls change their seats
so that the original order changed. Everyone
has to be absolutely silent now.
Game: The one in the middle names to
numbers (e.g. 2 and 8). The two girls
owning No 2 and No 8 have now the task
to change places without being caught by
the one in the middle who of course tries
to reach one of them. It’s not allowed to
sit down again after you have ones stand
up from your chair or to leave the inner
circle and of course everyone else has to
be very very silent to give the one in the
middle a chance. As soon as the two girls
have successfully changed places without
being caught, the one in the middle tries
it again saying two other numbers. As
soon as the middle one caught one of the
changing girls this one has to go into the
middle and she „hands over“ her number
to the former middle one. After the eyes
are covered again all girls change their
seats again and the game starts from the
beginning.

German cooking
Stockbrot (Bread on a stick)
Ingredients:
1kg flower
600ml lukewarm water
2 pieces of yeast or 2 packages of dried
yeast
1 teaspoon salt
Mix the ingredients together in a bowl and
knead it until you can see bubbles in the dough. Let it rise for about one hour at a warm
place. Make portions half the size of a tennis ball and shape it into a long ”sausage”.
Wind this in circles around a wooden stick which should have a diameter of about 2-3
cm and a length of about a meter. This end of the stick should be totally covered with
dough, it can burn otherwise. Hold the stick with the dough-end over the fire (approx.
distance of 30 cm) or better over hot embers and turn the stick slowly so that the bread
gets heat from all sides until is brown on the outside and cooked on the inside. Make
sure you do not burn it. You need some patients. Together with that you can eat hot
sausages, cheese, Nutella (chocolate spread) or jam ...
Chai – Das Getränk der Pfadfinderinnen (The girls scouts drink )
Ingredients (for about 25 people):
7l fruit-tea
1l black tea
1l orange juice (it can be also apple juice)
sugar (a lot)
6 apple
2 oranges
raisins or dried fruit
Tutti-Frutti
nuts (e.g. almonds)
cinnamon
cloves
Ingredients (for about 10 people):
2 l milk
2 packages of pudding powder (vanilla taste)
1 package of “buttercookies” (these are plain squared flat
cookies)
jam
Cook the pudding as directed on the package. Pour one
layer into a bowl, put cookies on top and cover them with a
layer of jam. Repeat that until the pudding is finished. Let
it cool before eating.
Cook the tea and add the juices. Slice
the apples and oranges into small cubes.
Heat all together.
The Chai tastes best right next to the
campfire.

Bauernfrühstück – Farmer’s breakfast
Ingredients (for about 40 people):
5kg Potatoes
10 big onions
1kg smoked bacon
60 eggs
about ½ l milk
salt
leaves
Cook the potatoes, peel them and cut them
into cubes. Cut the onions and the bacon into
cubes. Fry the bacon in a pan, add onions and
potatoes to it and heat it until it is all golden.
Stir eggs and milk together, add salt and leaves
to it. Pour the sauce over the potatoes and
fry it until the egg is “solid”. Do not forget to
turn it over from time to time
