AN/TPQ-37(V)9 Reliability Maintainability Improvement (RMI)
Description:
Advanced technology improvements for the Firefinder
ground weapon locating radars that will extend system
service life and significantly reduce customer life cycle
costs are being incorporated into the AN/TPQ-37 radar
platform. In conjunction with the U.S. Army,
ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) has developed the
AN/TPQ-37 Reliability, Maintainability Improvements that
are being incorporated into fielded U.S. Army inventory
assets allowing the combat proven system to remain the
mainstay of long range artillery well into the 21st
Century. The radar upgrade will provide significant
improvements over the current fielded system by providing
new, state-of-the-art electronics in the form of an aircooled
modular transmitter and new radar processor.

Transmitter Upgrade
The AN/TPQ-37 transmitter has been completely
redesigned, incorporating 12 modern air-cooled power
amplifier modules (PAMs), a high power RF combiner and
fully automated transmitter control unit. This improved
architecture provides longer and more reliable
transmitter performance, continued radar operation under
fault conditions and simplified maintenance. Automated
fault diagnosis and transmitter alignment reduces both
preventative and repair average maintenance time by 50%
or more. The AN/TPQ-37 RMI cooling system uses multiple
blowers and a maintenance-free filtration system,
eliminating all need for liquid cooling. The operation and
speed of the blowers are determined by the overall cooling
demand and are controlled by the transmitter control unit.
This results in greater reliability with less power and fuel
consumption.
Radar Processor Upgrade
The new radar processor combines the latest VME-64x
architecture and full high/low temperature performance
with proven AN/TPQ-37 Operational and Maintenance
software programs. Containing only three circuit cards,
maintenance and provisioning are simplified while overall
reliability and power consumption is improved. Sharing
the same hardware with the AN/TPQ-36, the radar
processor offers open architecture that provides growth
for future RMI upgrades.
