MANAGING
MEDICAL
EMERGENCIES
A Program For Physicians
Working in Emergency Departments
May 15, 2006
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center
Lebanon, New Hampshire

Dear Colleague,
Welcome back to the Spring edition of Managing Medical Emergencies.
With nationally recognized speakers, our current line up of nine topics is
very exciting. The emphasis, as always, will be on clinical care in the ED,
which you can take home and apply immediately. But, we are also
continuing to vary the length and format of the lectures: Two will be totally
case based, one will be a completely hands on workshop type, and all of them
will utilize our interactive audience participation system getting you even
more involved. A super cadre of faculty has been assembled who are experts
in Emergency Medicine and specialists in the areas being addressed. I
cannot tell you how excited I am about this conference. Top lectures, great
attendance, and an excellent deal.
We are expecting a boost in attendance since the New Hampshire Chapter of
the American College of Emergency Physicians (NH ACEP) is now
sponsoring their members to attend (if you are not a member and want to
check eligibility to join you can call Joy Potter at the business office 603-224-
1909). NH ACEP will be holding a dinner and business meeting following
the conference, and everyone is welcome to attend. There should also be
plenty of networking time to spend with your colleagues and to make new
friends. You will also have time to learn what is new in the pharmaceutical
industry from the companies supporting our conference.
The Managing Medical Emergencies series will, of course, continue with
the fall conference to be held November 9, 2006 in the Southern area of New
Hampshire (site still to be determined between Frisbie Memorial Hospital
and Concord Hospital). Mark your calendars now and join us there as well.
The New Hampshire Chapter of the American College of Emergency
Physicians’ Website, www.NHACEP.org, has the meeting schedule for the
next several years. Thanks to all of you, and your support, this conference
series remains a favorite with participants.
Please plan to join us for Managing Medical Emergencies. We look
forward to seeing you at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon,
New Hampshire, May 15, 2006. Don’t miss these lectures. They will
improve your practice.
OBJECTIVES
After the successful completion of attending this conference,
participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate increased awareness of medical problems and
treatments unique to the emergency department.
• Identify cutting edge up-to-date treatments for various medical
and traumatic emergencies.
• Use Propofol/Diprivan in a safe and efficacious manner for
procedural sedation and compare it to other sedatives.
• Describe the indication/contraindications, dosing, and subtleties
of using Propofol for procedural sedation.
• Differentiate the subtleties of seizure and syncope.
• Determine if the “spells” their patients have are seizures or syncope.
• State current concepts on treatment of DKA; state differences in
pediatric versus adult pathophysiology and identify what this
means to treatment options.
• Diagnose and care for DKA patients of all ages for the first several
hours.
• Discuss why agents besides Dopamine should be first line for
many hypotensive/shock states; identify which receptors are
involved; state how they work; state which pressor agent to use,
and why.
• Identify dental emergencies that can be completely handled in
the ED; how to appropriately temporize the others, and the timeline
appropriate for follow up.
• Use the latest tests, their sensitivity/specificity, in the work up of
thromboembolic disease, as well as techniques to avoid missing
the diagnosis and determining which PE patients can be safely
treated on an outpatient basis.
• Describe the subtle signs and findings of pediatric abuse; take an
appropriate and sensitive history and physical.
• State key differential diagnosis and treatment guidelines for
patients who cannot urinate; what measures to take immediately
and when they need to be referred.
• State multiple techniques and materials for splinting the most
common orthopedic injuries that present regularly to the ED, clinic,
and office setting.
• Demonstrate splinting various high presentation injuries using
multiple types of materials.
