Along Massachusetts Street, lots filled in rapidly in the years just before and after<br />
statehood. Visible in this view to the north from today’s Eighth Street, are signs<br />
for businesses selling boots and shoes, stoves, hardware and baked goods. People<br />
wearing heavy coats have gathered with their mounts on the west side of the<br />
street. Neatness and order were not observed strictly on Massachusetts, which is<br />
strewn with casks, boxes and a trunk.<br />
