ATCHISON • 1860
Kansas was still a territory in 1860 when this scene was captured. The view is
southwest past the hardware store at Fourth and Commercial streets, Atchison’s
business hub. The city was five years old at the time, and in its early years its
economy benefitted from steamboat traffic on the Missouri River and from
overland trade — routes extended to the West Coast. The proximity of Atchison
to Missouri meant the city contained a substantial number of pro-slavery
residents. In fact, it took its name from a pro-slavery Missouri senator, David
Rice Atchison.
