wish to place all sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> a state <strong>of</strong> Buddhahood. <strong>The</strong>se three po<strong>in</strong>ts are<br />

practiced through m<strong>in</strong>d tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, as described <strong>in</strong> “<strong>The</strong> Seven Po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>d Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are also <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs on meditat<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> equality <strong>of</strong> oneself <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs,<br />

meditat<strong>in</strong>g on exchang<strong>in</strong>g oneself <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> meditat<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g superior or more important than oneself. Through <strong>the</strong>se three<br />

meditations we generate <strong>the</strong> wish that all sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs never be separated from<br />

happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y always have <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess – this is lov<strong>in</strong>gk<strong>in</strong>dness.<br />

We meditate that all sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs may be free from suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> its<br />

causes – this is compassion. We also meditate that all liv<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>gs may atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

omniscient state <strong>of</strong> Buddhahood – this is <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> enlightenment, bodhichitta.<br />

So <strong>the</strong> first practice is <strong>the</strong> meditation on oneself <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g equal. <strong>The</strong> way<br />

to do this meditation is to consider that “Just as I always want to be happy, all o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs always want to be happy too. Whe<strong>the</strong>r a hundred, a thous<strong>and</strong>, a<br />

million or a billion sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong>y all want to be happy. We are all <strong>the</strong> same.<br />

Just as I myself want to be free from suffer<strong>in</strong>g, a hundred, a thous<strong>and</strong>, a hundred<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> a million sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs also want to be free <strong>of</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g.” That is how<br />

we develop love <strong>and</strong> compassion. <strong>The</strong>n wish<strong>in</strong>g to place all liv<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> state<br />

<strong>of</strong> Buddhahood is <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> enlightenment. This is <strong>the</strong> meditation on <strong>the</strong> equality<br />

<strong>of</strong> self <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Second is <strong>the</strong> meditation <strong>of</strong> exchang<strong>in</strong>g oneself for o<strong>the</strong>rs. Just like <strong>the</strong> meditation <strong>of</strong><br />

exchang<strong>in</strong>g oneself for o<strong>the</strong>rs, this practice is meditat<strong>in</strong>g that anyth<strong>in</strong>g bad that<br />

happens to o<strong>the</strong>r sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs is just as bad as if it had happened to oneself – it is<br />

putt<strong>in</strong>g oneself <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r person’s shoes, so to speak. This practice also enables us<br />

to underst<strong>and</strong> that only <strong>by</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g to benefit o<strong>the</strong>r sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs can we actually<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g any benefit to ourselves <strong>and</strong> anyone else. S<strong>in</strong>ce beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gless time <strong>in</strong> samsara<br />

<strong>and</strong> until now, through an <strong>in</strong>conceivable number <strong>of</strong> births, we have been act<strong>in</strong>g only<br />

for our own benefit <strong>and</strong> this has brought us tremendous suffer<strong>in</strong>g. But if we act for<br />

<strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, it br<strong>in</strong>gs great happ<strong>in</strong>ess. This is <strong>the</strong> meditation <strong>of</strong> exchang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

self with o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

<strong>The</strong> third practice is meditat<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g superior. <strong>The</strong> motive that we can<br />

consider while meditat<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g superior to us is th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, “<strong>The</strong>re is only<br />

one me. But how many sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs are <strong>the</strong>re An <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite number. And <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

much more important. <strong>The</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> freedom from suffer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>se<br />

sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs is much more important than <strong>the</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> just one, than myself<br />

alone.” This is <strong>the</strong> meditation on o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g superior to oneself.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong>se three meditations – meditat<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g equal to oneself,<br />

exchang<strong>in</strong>g self with o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> meditat<strong>in</strong>g on o<strong>the</strong>rs as be<strong>in</strong>g superior – we develop<br />

<strong>the</strong> wish that all sentient be<strong>in</strong>gs may be happy <strong>and</strong> may have <strong>the</strong> causes <strong>of</strong>
