<strong>of</strong> bliss <strong>and</strong> empt<strong>in</strong>ess. This is <strong>the</strong> third aspect <strong>of</strong> an empowerment, which shows you<br />

that your m<strong>in</strong>d is <strong>the</strong> union <strong>of</strong> bliss <strong>and</strong> empt<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

After receiv<strong>in</strong>g an empowerment, a student receives vajra <strong>in</strong>structions, <strong>the</strong> second<br />

factor for practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> secret Mantrayana. <strong>The</strong> first factor (<strong>the</strong> empowerment) <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> second (<strong>the</strong> vajra <strong>in</strong>structions) depend upon <strong>the</strong> Lama; <strong>the</strong>y depend upon <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>structions <strong>the</strong> Lama gives. Without <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions from <strong>the</strong> Lama, <strong>the</strong>y would be<br />

miss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> could not be given. Usually when we talk about Buddhism, we see <strong>the</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong> teacher as Lord Buddha himself. However, <strong>in</strong> <strong>Tibetan</strong> Buddhism, <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />

teacher is referred to as <strong>the</strong> Lama. You might wonder <strong>and</strong> ask, “Isn’t it a bit strange<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Lama is considered more important than <strong>the</strong> Buddha himself” You might<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k that this is <strong>in</strong>appropriate. But actually, it is not because <strong>the</strong> Buddha lived <strong>and</strong><br />

passed beyond misery over two thous<strong>and</strong> four hundred years ago, so <strong>the</strong>re is no way<br />

that we can actually meet him personally – <strong>the</strong>re is no way that we can receive<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions from him. But that does not mean that we cannot practice Buddhism,<br />

that we cannot atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al result. If you are <strong>in</strong>telligent <strong>and</strong> diligent enough, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

you can, <strong>in</strong> this very lifetime, actually atta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> omniscient state <strong>of</strong> Buddhahood, but<br />

it does depend upon your <strong>in</strong>telligence <strong>and</strong> your diligence more than anyth<strong>in</strong>g else.<br />

But that is not enough – you also need to have a teacher who can actually give you<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions <strong>and</strong> tell you how to meditate. Your teacher has to give you <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>structions that have been passed down from <strong>the</strong> Buddha himself. And so, your root<br />

Lama is your primary Lama who gives you <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions. <strong>The</strong> l<strong>in</strong>eage Lamas<br />

are all <strong>the</strong> Lamas who have passed on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions, from master to disciple, for<br />

generations. <strong>The</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> root <strong>and</strong> l<strong>in</strong>eage Lamas are as important as <strong>the</strong> Buddha<br />

himself, because without <strong>the</strong>m it would be impossible for you to receive <strong>the</strong> vajra<br />

<strong>in</strong>structions <strong>and</strong> empowerments.<br />

<strong>The</strong> vajra <strong>in</strong>structions are <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>gs passed down from <strong>the</strong> root <strong>and</strong> l<strong>in</strong>eage<br />

Lamas to you, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions on how to meditate. How do you sit when you<br />

meditate What do you do with your m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>n When engaged <strong>in</strong> sitt<strong>in</strong>g meditation<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Secret Mantra Vajrayana <strong>the</strong>re are particular <strong>in</strong>structions on how to sit called<br />

“<strong>the</strong> seven po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> posture <strong>of</strong> Vairochana.” Vairochana is a Buddha, whose<br />

name denotes “clear see<strong>in</strong>g.” <strong>The</strong>re are also <strong>the</strong> five po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> meditative<br />

concentration. So <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> ways you sit, <strong>the</strong> way you place your body <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

correct posture. In that way you have <strong>the</strong> vajra <strong>in</strong>structions on what to do with your<br />

body. <strong>The</strong>re are also <strong>the</strong> vajra <strong>in</strong>structions on what to do with your m<strong>in</strong>d. What do<br />

you visualize when you are meditat<strong>in</strong>g on a yidam, <strong>the</strong> meditation deity What do<br />

you do with your m<strong>in</strong>d when you are do<strong>in</strong>g tranquility meditation What do you do<br />

with your m<strong>in</strong>d when engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>sight meditation All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>structions belong<br />

to <strong>the</strong> vajra <strong>in</strong>structions that are given to you <strong>by</strong> your Lama. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Secret Mantra Vajrayana, <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>in</strong>structions on what to do with your speech,<br />

which prayers to recite, what rituals to read, how to recite <strong>the</strong> mantras <strong>and</strong> so forth.<br />

In this way <strong>the</strong>re are vajra <strong>in</strong>structions for what to do with your body, speech <strong>and</strong>
