promote the humane treatment of animals in the Siouxland area.
It’s that glorious time of year when love is in the
air and the Siouxland Humane Society’s Gourmet
Double Chocolate Caramel Apples are available.
We’re talking about Valentine’s Day, of course, and
our yummy fundraiser which helps the homeless and
neglected pets in Siouxland.
Want a terrific Valentine’s Day gift? It’s a
wonderful way to remember your sweetie, spouse,
babysitter, co-workers, friends, relatives or anyone
else you want to surprise with the perfect gift. And
they are still a great bargain at only $15 each!
The large tart apples are first wrapped in caramel,
then dipped in milk chocolate and drizzled with
white chocolate. Finally they’re sprinkled with
crushed toffee candy and wrapped attractively in
cellophane and ribbon. Similar apples featured in
trendy catalogs and shops sell for up to $25.00.
Orders are due on or before Sunday, February
7, 2010. Use the enclosed handy red order form or
call in your order to 712-252-2614, ext. 7. Humane
Society officials warn Siouxlanders not to hesitate to
place your order. We sell out every year and some
have had to go without!
Pick up times and locations are from 11 a.m. to 7
p.m. Tuesday, February 9th and Wednesday, February
10th at the Southern Hills Mall Centre Court and the
Gourmet Apples - Sweet Treat
That Helps Homeless Animals!
Be Part of the Fun!
If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes
an army to make the thousands of gourmet apples .
Last year some 300 volunteers helped make our
apple project a huge success . Scores sold apples to
relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers while
dozens met to help dip, drizzle and wrap . Help is
desperately needed weekday hours for this project .
If you’d like to help this year, with either
sales or making of the apples, please call
LaVon at 712-252-2614, ext. 16. Thanks!
A Note from LaVon
This time of year for me is always a time for
reflection on the past year and a time to remember my
blessings. On top of my list is of course my family,
friends and also all the wonderful volunteers I have met
through my work here at the shelter. I consider myself
very lucky to work with such a wonderful, committed
group of people whether it is on fundraising events, the
offsite adoption programs, helping find a special needs
animal a home or support from the community. I
would like to thank all of you that help make this shelter
such a success! You do truly make a difference!
Paws ‘n Claus is just one example of the fine
support we receive from our volunteers and people
throughout the community. I would like to thank
Klinger Properties for the use of the old Hancock
Fabric building, G. R. Lindblade for the use of their
props for the set, Kalin’s Indoor Comfort for supplying
the beautiful fireplace for our set, Rick Arnold
for his beautiful tree decorations, Dr. Richard and
LeeAnn Robinson for their tireless efforts helping the
photographer in taking pictures and our photographers
who so generously donate their time, Steve Paulson,
Mike Northrup and KJ from Photography by KJ. Each
day we also have a very dedicated volunteer that dresses
as Santa and are on hand for pictures. This is a very
hot and yes, sometimes a hazardous job. I would like
to thank Jim Stroh, Dr. Oss, Dr. Anema, Ed Tryon,
Mitch Boone and Steve Nelson for the patience and
jolliness. Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers
that came and volunteered their time for this project.
Because of all of you we had a very successful event and
raised over $11,000 for the shelter.
The offsite adoption program continues to be
successful. We did extra offsites when needed and really
made a difference. I would like to thank Southern Hills
Mall, Petco, Petsmart, Sam’s Club and Tractor Supply
for allowing us to be at their locations to help us show
the community what wonderful pets we have to offer.
Mark your calendars for our Gourmet Double
Chocolate Caramel Apple project coming up in late
January/early February. On behalf of all the animals
here at the shelter, thank you. Happy New Year!
“Best Friends” Volunteer Program
Are you interested in making a difference in
Siouxland? One of the best places to volunteer may
be right near you, the Siouxland Humane Society!
Whether you walk dogs at the Shelter, assist with
offsite adoption events or help with a fundraising
project, you can make a difference in the lives of
animals.
Here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering:
1. Be part of the solution. You’ll join a network
of hundreds of thousands of people working to
make the world safe and more humane for all
living creatures. You’ll make the jobs of everyone
working for animals a little easier by lending a
hand and spreading the message of responsible pet
ownership and animal protection.
2. Get warm fuzzies. You’ll never find a more
grateful and accepting comrade than an animal
you’ve comforted.
– 3 –
3. Keep good company. You’ll make lots of
new friends – and not just the four-legged kind.
Working side by side with people who share
similar interests can forge lifelong friendships.
4. Meet the new you. You’ll discover skills you
never knew you had, and you may be surprised at
what you’re capable of achieving.
5. Gain a new career. You’ll learn things that may
lead you to the career – or career change – of your
dreams. Employers and college admissions officers
look favorably on time spent in volunteer service.
6. Enjoy a wagging tail, a purr, and a smile.
Didn’t someone once say that the best things in
life are free?
If you have an interest in volunteer opportunities
with the Siouxland Humane Society and would like
to help out or have questions about Best Friends,
please call Kelly Erie at (712) 252-2614, ext. 7.
Dogwear: Over 30 Super
Easy Sewing Projects —
Fashionable, Functional,
Fun Gear for Your Four-
Legged Friend
by Mette Syrstad Høydal
From vests and collars to hoodies, bathrobes, and
collapsible water bowls, this book will have your
little dog dressed to the nines for every occasion.
Easy-to-make and ready-to-wear, the simple patterns
put stylish canine attire at your fingertips. Create a
supply of paw socks or a set of panniers, sew a liner
for a bike basket or bed, or a cover for the travel cage.
The author suggests making a practice outfit with
an old sheet or thin towels so that you can alter
the pattern for a perfect fit. Fabrics and notions
are meant as suggestions and Høydal encourages
creativity in that department as well.
Whether you attempt a project or not, the dogs
and their outfits are a stitch to see. Dogwear is
available at the Sioux City Public Library.
Volunteer Spotlight
By Lynn Posey
Busy, yes, but not when it comes to the Shelter!
Eighteen years ago, Michael Northrup was asked
to be a photographer at the Paws and Claus event. He
has been participating ever since in that wonderful
seasonal activity. Photographing pets of all shapes and
sizes that visit Paws and Claus, spruced up for their
photo with Santa is a festive volunteer experience for
him!
Michael notes he has been happily married to “my
wonderful” wife, Leah for 12 years. She also helps
with Paws and Claus. They are quite the duo during
picture taking sessions.
Michael teaches at WITCC, USD, University
Center in Sioux Falls, Little Priest Tribal College and
Volunteer, Advocate, Fundraiser!
Janet Dorale Hampf’s love of animals began
during childhood. She had dogs and cats as
“wonderful companions” as she grew up on a farm
near Kingsley, Iowa. Her involvement with the
Siouxland Humane Society began when she first
volunteered to walk dogs and cats. Janet notes “I
was actually afraid of most dogs before I started
walking them. Now I stop to catch lost dogs.”
Janet joined the board 13 years ago and since has
been president and vice president twice, nominating
chair, volunteer services chair and fundraising
chair. Meeting so many passionate animal lovers
through her involvement in shelter activities has
been most rewarding. One year for Paws and
Claus, she made a quilt for the raffle and that
led to the organization of the 1st annual
quilt auction this past year. The
apple fundraiser is her favorite
though. Janet boasts, “I have an
awesome network of apple sellers
and buyers. It is a great fundraiser and publicity
raiser.” The past few years her team has sold over 800
apples. She also very much appreciates her group of
– 7 –
the Sioux City Art Center. Additionally, he is also is
employed at Best Buy.
When not so busy at work or volunteering,
Michael and Leah are at home with Koko, an 11 year
old little Siamese, who was abandoned at 3 weeks of
age; and Harry, an orange tabby whom they have
hand raised from 8 days of age this past year.
Michael would like to see the shelter be no-kill
someday. He loves the volunteer work at the SHS and
all of the wonderful pets and people he has been able
to meet here. We thank him for always making time
for the animals!
ribbon curlers that have faithfully curled over 100,000
ribbons each year. Janet also helps enhance the shelter
atmosphere by changing the plantings in the back
yard seasonally. She also prepares special treats for
employee’s birthdays and anniversaries. Smiling, she
notes “It is fun to get the monthly list. I consider
this my way of thanking the employees for all
their hard work and dedication.”
A graduate of Kingsley –Pierson high
school and Iowa Sate University, she lives in
Lawton, Iowa with her husband, Dieter and
her pet family. Along with volunteering
and advocacy, Janet believes in financial
support of the SHS as well. She says,
“this is an organization that is always there for
homeless pets and people who benefit from the
services available.” Included in her estate
plan is the Siouxland Humane Society.
Janet’s pet family means the world to
her and she credits her mom and dad
for “teaching me that every creature great
and small is God’s gift.” We thank her for sharing
her gifts!

From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
What’s on your New Years wish list this year? My
list probably looks much like yours, wishing good health
for yourself, family and friends and prosperity for the
Siouxland community. My list also includes that for
every abused, neglected and unwanted pet a warm safe
place to lay their heads and for every adoptable pet in a
shelter a permanent loving new home. Many think this
will never come true, but every year we do get closer
and closer to my New Years wish. We have much to be
thankful for and the progress we and our animal loving
friends are making is truly remarkable.
Our animal loving friends includes you. As a donor
you help us fulfill our mission to provide programs and
services that promote the humane treatment of animals
in the Siouxland area. You help send our staff out to
rescue animals in abuse and neglect cases, our educators
into the classroom, and help us care for all the pets at our
Shelter. You help pay for spay/neuter surgeries, health
care, foster care and, best of all, you help send happy pets
out our doors and into permanent new loving homes.
You also help us take on new challenges. More lost
pets are getting back home now because of our Home
Again microchip program. More homeless pets are
– 8 –
finding new homes through our Breed Rescue Program,
so more pets in our shelter are finding a permanent
loving new home. Our adoption rate is nearing the 90%
rate, compared to 37% nationally!
With economic hard times upon us it creates hard
times for animals. More pets are relinquished as people
tighten their belts or lose their jobs. More pets are left
behind when people are forced to move. We are here for
those animals no matter what comes.
We do not turn away any animals nor do we charge
a fee to leave a pet in our care. In fact in 2009 only 44%
of those who surrendered animals left financial help to
partly cover the cost of care while here at the Shelter.
Your donations, as our animal loving friends, helped
cover the costs of caring for the others.
We need your support now more than ever. You
are the homeless pet’s best friend – now and forever. I
hope you’ll consider a generous New Year commitment
to help us continue to fulfill our mission. Your support
will help thousands of pets less fortunate than your own
and will be very much appreciated. Thank you and
Happy New Year!
Gratefully yours,
Jerry Dominicak
A New Pet For the New Year!
Was your New Years resolution to give a
homeless pet a second chance at life? We
hope so! Please consider adopting a new
pet for the New Year at one of our
offsite adoption events held the third
Saturday of every month. We will
be at the Southern Hills Mall, center
court from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at
both Petsmart and Petco from noon
to 3 p.m. on January 16th, February
20th, March 20th and April 17th.
All of the pets will have their initial
preventative vaccinations, deworming,
microchipping and receive a free veterinary
health examination. Also a new parent guide
adoption packet and spay/neuter discounts
are included with each adoption! Stop by,
adopt and save a life! Look for a great
selection of pets to adopt at each location.
We can always use your help at the
offsite events. Help is needed to
transport dogs to and from the events and
also at the events showcasing the animals
for adoption. If you would like to volunteer
for these events please call LaVon at 252-2614,
ext. 16!

President’s Letter
It’s that time of year again. Everyone is making their
new year’s resolutions. I am sure there will be plenty
of the usual resolutions to stop smoking or lose weight
or start exercising. Those always seem to be the top
three and yet it seems by spring they are long forgotten.
Maybe we could look at making some resolutions that
are not so much about us but about how we can help
those creatures less fortunate than ourselves. Here are
just a few ideas on how you can make a difference in the
lives of animals this year.
Resolution #1 – Be kind to animals. It seems
like such a simple thing to do and yet we are constantly
hearing about animal abuse. Be kind when training
your pet. Do not use punishing methods, rather use
reward for desired behaviors. Be patient with your pet.
Remember you may have your job, your friends and
your hobbies but all he has is you. You are the whole
world to him. Show him that he is a major part of your
world.
Resolution #2 – Rescue an animal. The next
time you are looking to add a new furry member to
your family, consider rescuing a homeless animal. The
Siouxland Humane Society always has a selection of
great pets just looking for someone to love. We have
animals of all ages but you could go the extra mile
and consider rescuing an older dog or cat. An older
animal is often already trained and is not as excitable as
a younger pet. They are just happy to have a home and
are content to just lie down at your feet or on your lap
and soak up the love. Whatever you are looking for,
young or old, purebred or mixed breed be sure to stop at
the Siouxland Humane Society when looking for your
new best friend.
Resolution #3 – Spay or neuter your pet. If you
are going to be a responsible pet owner, please spay or
neuter your pet. There are millions of dogs and cats
that are put to death in this country because of pet
overpopulation. Do not contribute to this problem.
For every puppy or kitten your animal produces there
is one at a shelter somewhere that could have had a
home but will now be put to death. Please think of the
consequences of your actions before breeding your dog
or cat.
Resolution #4 – Do not support pet stores that sell
puppies. Pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills.
– 9 –
Do not let them fool you by telling you otherwise.
Most puppy mills are horrible places that are only
interested in churning out litters of puppies with no
regard for the animals’ health or well being. If you do
not know what a puppy mill is, Google it. You will be
shocked.
Resolution #5 – Support the animals. It takes
money to care for all of the animals that come into the
shelter. Any donation you can make to help the animals
makes a difference in their lives. If you just gave $10.00
a week by the end of the year you will have given over
$500.00! Likewise even $10.00 a month ends up to
be $120.00 for the year. Every dollar counts towards
helping give the animals better lives.
These are all simple resolutions that will make a big
difference in the lives of animals. You can also resolve
to educate family and friends about animal welfare.
And won’t it be nice to make some resolutions that you
can actually keep this year?
Cold Weather
Tips
Brrrr...it’s cold outside! The following guidelines will
help you protect your companion animals when the
mercury dips.
Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze,
become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who
are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases,
including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.
During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under
the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can
be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor
cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before
starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.
Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice,
especially during a snowstorm—dogs can lose their
scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during
the winter than during any other season, so make sure
yours always wears ID tags. Thoroughly wipe off your
dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in out of the
sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other
potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws,
and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted
ice.
Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter,
as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When
you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to
completely dry him before taking him out for a walk.
Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat
or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage
from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this
is regulation winter wear.
Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during
cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the
winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to
freeze to death. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well
as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during
the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the
weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your
dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed
type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.
Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged
in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food,
particularly protein, to keep him—and his fur—in tiptop
shape. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for
dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills
from your vehicle, and consider using products that
contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more
information.
Make sure your companion animal has a warm place
to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy
dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.
WHY GET
YOUR PET
MICROCHIPPED
Micro-chipping is a safe, humane and inexpensive
way to help find your beloved pet if he or she ever
becomes lost. Often stray animals are brought into a
shelter or a veterinary office. Pets with chips can be
scanned and their information tracked by a national
data system that will tell where the pet is from and
who he belongs to. For a nominal fee of $25, you can
have peace of mind if your favorite four-legged friend
ever becomes missing while on vacation or even from
your own back yard! Micro-chipping is available at
our Shelter. Please call 712-252-1614, ext. 7 for more
information.
