THREE STUDENTS ATTEND<br />

PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNOR’S<br />

SCHOOLS IN SUMMER 2007<br />

Three members of the Class of 2008<br />

earned places <strong>in</strong> the highly competitive,<br />

full-scholarship Pennsylvania Governor’s<br />

Schools for Excellence <strong>this</strong> past summer.<br />

Peter Curtis attended the Information,<br />

Society, and Technology program;<br />

Hillary Ramsey attended the Health Care<br />

program; and Y<strong>in</strong> Y<strong>in</strong> Ou was accepted<br />

to both the Arts program and the Global<br />

Entrepreneurship program and attended<br />

the former.<br />

Governor’s Schools are five-week<br />

residential programs held on college<br />

campuses. Peter traveled to Drexel<br />

University <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia, where he<br />

explored ways <strong>in</strong> which computer<br />

technology, network<strong>in</strong>g, and telecommunications<br />

can further human endeavors.<br />

Hilary participated at the University<br />

of Pittsburgh, where The Governor’s<br />

School for Health Care <strong>in</strong>troduced her<br />

to the health care field, emphasiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

delivery systems, primary care, prevention,<br />

and public health. Y<strong>in</strong> Y<strong>in</strong> attended<br />

Mercyhurst College <strong>in</strong> Erie, where The<br />

Governor’s School for the Arts provided<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong>tensive, sophisticated,<br />

experiential learn<strong>in</strong>g opportunities.<br />

Dr. David Seward, Director<br />

of College Counsel<strong>in</strong>g, notes The<br />

Governor’s School program is an <strong>in</strong>tense<br />

educational experience, as well as an<br />

enlighten<strong>in</strong>g social experience. He<br />

adds that the process of apply<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

school is as rigorous as that of apply<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to college: transcripts, essays, and recommendations<br />

are required. Students must<br />

also demonstrate commitment to their<br />

field of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> terms of volunteer<br />

work or research papers, as well as qualities<br />

of leadership.<br />

WINS WPSLA DII CHAMPIONSHIP<br />

In an excit<strong>in</strong>g, come-from-beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

victory the W<strong>in</strong>chester Thurston Boys<br />

Peter Buongiorno ’07 scores the w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g goal.<br />

Lacrosse team defeated The Kiski School<br />

by a score of 8 - 7, earn<strong>in</strong>g its first trophy<br />

as the WPSLA Division Champions <strong>in</strong><br />

June 2007.<br />

After play<strong>in</strong>g a flat first two quarters,<br />

WT entered halftime trail<strong>in</strong>g, 6-4, but<br />

coach Darrell Schmitt didn’t lecture<br />

his players. “I just told the kids to sit<br />

t h e r e , r e l a x , a n d b e q u i e t ,” S c h m i t t s a i d .<br />

“They were mentally and physically<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>ed from the semif<strong>in</strong>als and f<strong>in</strong>als.<br />

They just needed to regroup and get <strong>in</strong> the<br />

right frame of m<strong>in</strong>d.”<br />

WT came out <strong>in</strong> the second half and<br />

played at a more upbeat tempo to outscore<br />

The Kiski School, 4-1, the rest of the way.<br />

Attacker Peter Buongiorno ’07 came from<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d the net and scored the eventual<br />

game-w<strong>in</strong>ner on a leap<strong>in</strong>g, one-handed<br />

goal with 2:57 rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

“W<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the championship means<br />

so much to me and these kids,” Schmitt<br />

said. “But more importantly, it means a lot<br />

to <strong>this</strong> school because it further validates<br />

the strength of our athletics program.”<br />
