<strong>GEA</strong> <strong>Logo</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Contest</strong><br />

The Graduate <strong>Engineering</strong> Association (<strong>GEA</strong>) promotes, enhances, and furthers the welfare <strong>of</strong> all<br />

graduate students <strong>of</strong> the KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong>. <strong>GEA</strong>’s role is to represent the interests and concerns<br />

<strong>of</strong> graduate students by: acting as an advocate for student issues within the <strong>School</strong> and University<br />

communities, administrating the student-generated differential fees (094) allocated by the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Engineering</strong> and other organizations according to established procedures, and by maintaining<br />

communication with the departmental graduate student organizations and the graduate students enrolled<br />

in SoE.<br />

In order to create a compelling and substantial visual identity to represent the engineering graduate<br />

students <strong>of</strong> KU, this competition seeks a logo representing education, research, science and technology<br />

along with the aspirations and cultural diversity <strong>of</strong> engineering at KU.<br />

1. Eligibility<br />

Participants must compete as individuals. Individuals must be KU students pursuing an engineering<br />

degree (Undergrad or Graduate).<br />

2. <strong>Logo</strong> <strong>Design</strong> Features<br />

a. The logo must contain the letters G-E-A and KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

b. <strong>Logo</strong> will not include any material (photograph, icon, symbol etc) that is copyright protected by any<br />

person or organization/club/society<br />

c. The use <strong>of</strong> colors should be same as all other KU logos on campus – Blue, Red, White, Yellow, Gray<br />

(any combination)<br />

d. Imagery themes can be used in the logo design only if the image is free <strong>of</strong> Royalty fees<br />

e. There are no hard limits on the size <strong>of</strong> the logo; however, the minimum size <strong>of</strong> the <strong>GEA</strong> logo in print<br />

and non-screen-based applications would be 1inch wide and 1 inch high for square shape and 2 inches<br />

wide and 1 inch high for rectangular shape.<br />

3. Judging Criteria<br />

Judging will be carried out according to the following criteria:<br />

-Originality <strong>of</strong> the design<br />

-Visual appeal reflecting commitment, aspirations and cultural diversity <strong>of</strong> KU <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engineering</strong><br />

graduate students.<br />

-The use <strong>of</strong> colors as specified above.<br />

4. Prizes<br />

The winning logo design will be awarded a PhD comics book, “Piled Higher and Deeper,” signed by the<br />

author, Jorge Cham. A certificate <strong>of</strong> appreciation will also be given to the second and third best logo<br />

designs.<br />

5. Intellectual Property Rights<br />

Once you have submitted your logo design, the copyright and the ownership <strong>of</strong> the Intellectual Property<br />

Rights for the logo design will deem to be transferred to the <strong>GEA</strong>. The <strong>GEA</strong> reserves the right to publish<br />

the logo on <strong>GEA</strong> print or electronic communications (website, newsletter and <strong>of</strong>ficial stationery).<br />

6. Submissions<br />

S<strong>of</strong>t copy <strong>of</strong> the logo must be submitted via email to the <strong>GEA</strong> (gea@ku.edu) by April 29, 2011. Email:<br />

gea@ku.edu with questions. <strong>Logo</strong> can be an image in jpeg, gif or Tiff format.<br />

All entries must submit the Entry Form (also available at<br />

http://www.engr.ku.edu/graduate/resources/organizations.html) for the competition and should furnish the<br />

following details:<br />

1. A signed statement by the participants that the logo design does not include any copyright protected or<br />

Royalty payable material.

Incomplete entries will be declared void and will not be eligible to win.<br />

7. Distribution <strong>of</strong> Prize<br />

The prize will be hand delivered to the individual participant in co-operation with the Associate Dean <strong>of</strong><br />

Research & Graduate Programs, Dr. Glen Marotz.<br />

8. Final Decision<br />

The <strong>GEA</strong> reserves the right to accept or to reject any or all submissions that do not meet the<br />

requirements for participation and/or competition. In the event that similar entries are submitted by<br />

multiple participants, <strong>GEA</strong> reserves the right to select the prize winner based on the criteria listed above<br />

plus any other design features reflecting the region’s unique social and cultural characteristics or<br />

embracing broad KU or engineering interests and purposes. If required, tie-breaking will be at the<br />

discretion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>GEA</strong> and Research & Graduate Programs. The decision <strong>of</strong> the <strong>GEA</strong> Judging Committee<br />

will be final and no appeal against the decision will be considered.<br />

9. Agreement to Official Rules<br />

By participating in the contest, participants agree to abide by the rules and conditions as established<br />

above, which can be amended or modified at any time by the <strong>GEA</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers if necessary.<br />
