GEA Logo Design Contest
The Graduate Engineering Association (GEA) promotes, enhances, and furthers the welfare of all
graduate students of the KU School of Engineering. GEA’s role is to represent the interests and concerns
of graduate students by: acting as an advocate for student issues within the School and University
communities, administrating the student-generated differential fees (094) allocated by the School of
Engineering and other organizations according to established procedures, and by maintaining
communication with the departmental graduate student organizations and the graduate students enrolled
in SoE.
In order to create a compelling and substantial visual identity to represent the engineering graduate
students of KU, this competition seeks a logo representing education, research, science and technology
along with the aspirations and cultural diversity of engineering at KU.
1. Eligibility
Participants must compete as individuals. Individuals must be KU students pursuing an engineering
degree (Undergrad or Graduate).
2. Logo Design Features
a. The logo must contain the letters G-E-A and KU School of Engineering
b. Logo will not include any material (photograph, icon, symbol etc) that is copyright protected by any
person or organization/club/society
c. The use of colors should be same as all other KU logos on campus – Blue, Red, White, Yellow, Gray
(any combination)
d. Imagery themes can be used in the logo design only if the image is free of Royalty fees
e. There are no hard limits on the size of the logo; however, the minimum size of the GEA logo in print
and non-screen-based applications would be 1inch wide and 1 inch high for square shape and 2 inches
wide and 1 inch high for rectangular shape.
3. Judging Criteria
Judging will be carried out according to the following criteria:
-Originality of the design
-Visual appeal reflecting commitment, aspirations and cultural diversity of KU School of Engineering
graduate students.
-The use of colors as specified above.
4. Prizes
The winning logo design will be awarded a PhD comics book, “Piled Higher and Deeper,” signed by the
author, Jorge Cham. A certificate of appreciation will also be given to the second and third best logo
designs.
5. Intellectual Property Rights
Once you have submitted your logo design, the copyright and the ownership of the Intellectual Property
Rights for the logo design will deem to be transferred to the GEA. The GEA reserves the right to publish
the logo on GEA print or electronic communications (website, newsletter and official stationery).
6. Submissions
Soft copy of the logo must be submitted via email to the GEA (gea@ku.edu) by April 29, 2011. Email:
gea@ku.edu with questions. Logo can be an image in jpeg, gif or Tiff format.
All entries must submit the Entry Form (also available at
http://www.engr.ku.edu/graduate/resources/organizations.html) for the competition and should furnish the
following details:
1. A signed statement by the participants that the logo design does not include any copyright protected or
Royalty payable material.

Incomplete entries will be declared void and will not be eligible to win.
7. Distribution of Prize
The prize will be hand delivered to the individual participant in co-operation with the Associate Dean of
Research & Graduate Programs, Dr. Glen Marotz.
8. Final Decision
The GEA reserves the right to accept or to reject any or all submissions that do not meet the
requirements for participation and/or competition. In the event that similar entries are submitted by
multiple participants, GEA reserves the right to select the prize winner based on the criteria listed above
plus any other design features reflecting the region’s unique social and cultural characteristics or
embracing broad KU or engineering interests and purposes. If required, tie-breaking will be at the
discretion of the GEA and Research & Graduate Programs. The decision of the GEA Judging Committee
will be final and no appeal against the decision will be considered.
9. Agreement to Official Rules
By participating in the contest, participants agree to abide by the rules and conditions as established
above, which can be amended or modified at any time by the GEA officers if necessary.
