Mathematics Teacher-directed Unit Plan
Mathematics Center-based and Small Group Teaching
Mathematics instruction will be designed and implemented as part of your practicum placement. Unit/lesson implementation will
be assessed by the cooperating teacher and the principles instructor. TCs will analyze their own performance through reflective
writing. Guidelines and rubrics will be discussed and provided in class as well as posted on BB. This will be included in the
elementary education portfolio.

Gibsonville. TCs will analyze their own performance through reflective writing. Guidelines and rubrics will be discussed and
provided in class as well as posted on BB. This will be included in the elementary education portfolio.

Midterm and Final Exams
These exams will cover math and science content, curriculum and pedagogy.
In General
I will be giving you formative and summative feedback. “Feedback is most valuable when students have the opportunity to use it
to revise their thinking as they are working on a unit or project” (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000); therefore, I will be give
you the opportunity to receive formative feedback in a manner that allows you to revise your work. This will be an opportunity to
receive feedback in advance of and separate from any judgment of effort. This will occur before turn-in dates and will be optional.
Once items are turned-in for „grading‟, the formative feedback time will have passed. Formative assessments will identify
problems and suggest progress towards a goal, while summative assessment will measure the level of success at reaching that
goal. You SHOULD NOT consider formative feedback to be „pre-grading‟. These formative feedback times will come after you
have self-assessed and/or peer-assessed an item. The peer review process is an important part of the professional world of an
educator.
Nurture
Practicum: A Living Case Study
Practicum is an opportunity for you to examine your own beliefs about student learning and to „try out‟ your developing role as a
teacher. It is an opportunity for you to experience the „real life‟ of the classroom. My expectation is that you will be an active
participant in the learning community of either Gibsonville Elementary or Sedalia Elementary. It would not be appropriate for
you to work on Elon course work during practicum hours unless it involves working with students in some way. To be more
specific, practicum times are not planning times for you, they should be „instructional times‟. You have been scheduled for your
practicum based on the time that your cooperating teacher teaches math. However, you are not limited to attending during only
that time. [Whether you are attending practicum during math or not, you should put those hours on your internship log.] You
should also record the hours that you are meeting with your cooperating teacher to talk about lesson planning.
Required
Schedule at least one conference with you cooperating teacher during the semester. This should take place during the
first week of March to discuss your mathematics center lesson plans. You should put his documentation in your
professional portfolio. Use the documentation form found on BB (documents, forms).
Participate in three (3) extra curricular events outside of regular practicum hours. You will document these three events
with a documentation form, your cooperating teachers signature and a written refection of each event. You should place
this documentation in your professional portfolio at the end of the semester. We will discuss, in class, opportunities for
extracurricular events. Use the documentation form from BB (documents, forms).
Field Placement Attendance Log Sheets
A blank attendance log sheet is posted on BB (documents, forms). You should keep this current at all times noting the date and
time for each day you are in your classroom. Write a brief description of your activity. Your cooperating teacher (or other
appropriate person) should sign the log at the end of each week. Periodically, I will ask to see these. By the end of the semester
you should have approximately 90 hours of practicum time (at least). Keep track of your pacing. It will be important for you to
find some time to meet with your cooperating teacher (either before or after school or during a planning period). Most teachers
have limited planning time during the school day. If your cooperating teacher attends a grade level meeting on a regular basis,
ask if you could attend with him/her on occasion. Some teachers must meet with other grade level teachers over lunch. You may
need to be very „creative‟ about the times you spend talking to your cooperating teacher. I expect that you will take the lead on
