with mouth-watering meals and entertain you with mind blowing games, all while you wear
So start saving your money now girls, for the best day of the year!
BLING DAY
On Friday, 25 May, the Potted Sports Committee of 2012 hosted Parktown's best ever Bling
Day. The theme for this year was 'Cartoon Characters'
and each register class was allocated a different
character which they had to create by using numerous
coins. The day was a giant success and our girls
managed to raise R16 950 for our chosen charity,
Logwood Village.
Well done to Oreads 2 who took the dazzling gold prize
with their innovative version of Bubbles from the
Powerpuff Girls.
Thank you to Mrs Davidson and Miss Hulley for their
endless help and support in all aspects of the event.
Thank you to Miss Bastiotto, Mrs Clay, Miss Britz, Miss
Machileka and Mrs Maene for being outstanding
judges.
Thank you to all the register class teachers for
motivating their classes and contributing to the success
of the day. Thank you to the Potted Sports Committee
for all their hard work and enthusiasm. And, of course,
thank you to ALL of you 'Cool Kids' of Parktown who
made the day everything it was.
EMERGENCY SERVICES VISIT
On 1 June 20 learners accompanied by Mrs Seery, Mr France and Mrs von Ludwig
participated in a display at the Brixton Fire Station where Emergency Services had set up
replicas of collapsed and dangerous buildings, a camp site, including simple ablutions and
tents that would be used on site, and of course fire engines.
The girls watched demonstrations of how a search and rescue team would operate in a
foreign country and how rescue dogs search for the scent of humans. They learnt how a
team would live in their camp site, operating under very strict rules, and without luxuries.
They saw the various expensive machines and cameras that are used to detect life in very
dark situations and in rubble and talked at length to the members of the team, including one
of the only two women out of a squad of 72.

They found the whole event very inspiring. Did you know, for example, that South Africa has
the only internationally recognised search and rescue team in Africa, that South Africa sent
64 members of this team to Japan after the tsunami, and that the rescue dogs are treated as
individuals with their own passports?
The girls really enjoyed learning about all these things and are very proud of our country.
They hope that South Africa is able to continue this wonderful operation.
SPORTS NEWS
NETBALL
Netball had a busy and very successful season. Many girls made it to the first round of district
trials, and three Under 14 players made it to the second round of regional trials. This is quite
an accomplishment!
We participated in league matches against Vorentoe Hoër, King’s School, King David,
Deutsche Internationale Schule, Fourways High and Greenside High. The first team was
fortunate enough to also compete at the National Girls’
Schools’ Festival in Potchefstroom, and a tournament at
Wendywood High where we finished fourth.
On Youth Day, 16 June, the first team played against
Jeppe Girls as a curtain-raiser to a U/12 tournament.
One team per age group also attended the very
challenging Sports’ Day at the Oprah Winfrey
Leadership Academy.
Thank you to all the dedicated players, coaches and parents who contributed to the success
of netball this year.
CANOEING
We are very proud of Yuliya Konovodova who is taking part in lots of events in the marathon
discipline. She recently travelled to the Cape for the South African Marathon Kayak
Championships and has gained invaluable experience and fitness.
We also congratulate Sarah-Jean Goldschagg who has been selected for the SA Ladies’
Canoe Polo Team travelling to Europe soon - we hope that the essential fundraising is
successful!
Canoeing starts again on the first Tuesday of next term. All those interested are welcome to
join during the first two weeks of the term.
EQUESTRIAN
On 6 May the riders competed in the SANESA second qualifier. We
did exceptionally well, with our teachers Mrs Sales and Miss Dowling
by our sides cheering and helping us on the day. On 2 June we had
our SANESA third qualifier. This was a day filled with challenging
courses and tests, but we all did Parktown proud. Good luck to the
girls competing in the fourth qualifier on Saturday.
PASSIONATE AND PROUD!
Extra help from My School Card in June – make it count!
In honour of Youth Day, My School Card donated R1 extra on every purchase made between
15 and 17 June 2012. Remember too that as a My School Card holder you are eligible for
discounts on certain marked items.
! TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE !
Hand your Raffle sheets in to the Finance Office and you may be surprised by a little Pamper Pack.
You never know when they will be there…but the next one could be yours. Sales are going well but we
know you can do better – that fabulous TV has to go home with someone – it may as well be YOU!
WHO WILL WIN THAT LG 107CM LCD HD TV WITH JUST A R5 TICKET?
The Are You Smarter than an 8 th Grader Quiz night was won by ...the TEACHERS ! They
didn’t even cheat, bribe or blackmail the MC to do it. Parents shamelessly paid for clues
and answers but the teachers stuck to their guns and won the night. However, it was a
VERY close win, by just 1 point ! So, the grudge match has been booked for next year and
the battle lines have been drawn. It was great
fun and our laughter kept us warm. The
teachers’ table was delighted with their brilliant
pamper packs filled to the brim with goodies
galore…see you all again next year!
The evening was superbly put together by Janet
and Andrew Peace, Nicholas and Louise Mason
and Mariam and Mohammed Laher from the
PA Committee and ably supported by many
other members – from catering to tricky
questions – we thank you!
GOLF DAY
Our 4 th annual Golf Day was held on Friday 8 June. Our grateful thanks
go to all those parents and corporate sponsors who donated cash and
day. Special mention must be made of Mike Carlisle, Praveen Naidoo,
Charles Bengis, Mohammed Laher and Belinda and Brent Navias from
the Golf Day Committee for working so hard on an event that made
Parktown Proud. We must also pay tribute to the Proud and Passionate
PA mothers who braved the cold and acted as hostesses throughout the
day – proudly standing out in their blue and white supporter shirts - we
could not have done it without you! Mrs Pugh and Mrs Williams joined us
to complete a very professional team and the event raised almost four
times the amount it did last year! Well done Parents’ Association – what a team!
We have a couple more events planned before the year ends so watch this space for more
news. Our next meeting is on 1 August in the new term so come along and find out what your
