determ<strong>in</strong>e wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> best for<br />

customers’ driv<strong>in</strong>g habits with<br />

their particular vehicles. Much of<br />

our clientele <strong>is</strong> not pric<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

cheapest tires. They want wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />

best suited for their vehicle.”<br />

As for parts, about 15 to 18<br />

percent are OE, Reynolds said.<br />

Otherw<strong>is</strong>e, the shop deals with<br />

the local NAPA Auto Parts and<br />

Bumper to Bumper stores.<br />

“They have a good grasp on<br />

our market, the top movers,” he<br />

said. “Both have gre<strong>at</strong> quality<br />

parts and their <strong>service</strong> <strong>is</strong> fantastic. And<br />

they’re just right around the corner. If I can<br />

keep my <strong>in</strong>ventory down, I can keep my<br />

overall expense and bottom l<strong>in</strong>e for the<br />

customer low and give them the pros and<br />

cons; you educ<strong>at</strong>e the customer. If there’s an<br />

option, they should have some say <strong>in</strong> wh<strong>at</strong><br />

they are spend<strong>in</strong>g. You’re there to fix their<br />

car. Give them the same respect they are<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g you.”<br />

Reynolds said he <strong>is</strong> a “die-hard Monroe<br />

and Moog fan. Their quality <strong>is</strong> above and<br />

beyond everybody. They’re the <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

customer, if you don’t leave here<br />

feel<strong>in</strong>g like you made a friend, then I did<br />

needs, budget, wants, but keep safety and<br />

periods. “Th<strong>at</strong> way, the customer can<br />

see wh<strong>at</strong> the manufacturer<br />

recommends, and maybe break it up<br />

over two or three v<strong>is</strong>its, budget it <strong>in</strong>,”<br />

he said.<br />

Reynolds said he recently purchased<br />

a Hunter Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Hawkeye Elite<br />

alignment system.<br />

“We’re tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

alignment times out<br />

from 35 m<strong>in</strong>utes per car<br />

to 15 to 16 m<strong>in</strong>utes per<br />

car, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

adjustments. We’re<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g to quarter reduced tolerance over<br />

manufacturer’s specs,” he said. “It’s a large<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment but worth the expense.”<br />

Other equipment <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Shutes</strong> shop<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes some Snap-on scan tools, though<br />

he said he primarily uses OTC Gen<strong>is</strong>ys and<br />

Peg<strong>is</strong>ys, Road Force tire balancers, and<br />

Rob<strong>in</strong>air A/C equipment.<br />

Reynolds said th<strong>at</strong> eventually he will have<br />

Ow<strong>at</strong>onna, M<strong>in</strong>n.—F<strong>in</strong>d the leak. Clear<br />

the code. Smoke the test. At least 80<br />

percent of the top em<strong>is</strong>sion codes on<br />

vehicles today orig<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>e from the EVAP<br />

system and can be diagnosed faster and<br />

more accur<strong>at</strong>ely with smoke technology.<br />

“Technicians proficient with eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, vacuum, gaskets, and seals,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g EVAP systems, have a multitude<br />

of problem-f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g opportunities us<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

smoke-based leak detection offered by<br />

OTC’s LeakTamer,” said Andy Forsberg,<br />

product manager of Electronics <strong>at</strong> OTC.<br />

“And when work<strong>in</strong>g on EVAP systems,<br />

you need more than just a scan tool. The<br />

LeakTamer <strong>is</strong> less than half the size of its<br />

predecessor model, offer<strong>in</strong>g improved<br />

portability <strong>in</strong> your shop and more<br />

powerful diagnostics <strong>in</strong> a smaller<br />

package.”<br />

General repair and body shop<br />

technicians can use th<strong>is</strong> tool to solve<br />

problems <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>in</strong>d no<strong>is</strong>e and<br />

he<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g, ventil<strong>at</strong>ion and A/C (HVAC)<br />

performance, or to loc<strong>at</strong>e and repair w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

dra<strong>in</strong>age <strong>is</strong>sues. The OTC LeakTamer<br />

<strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>es p<strong>at</strong>ented technology by<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g an OEM-approved smoke<br />

compound with UltraTraceUV dye to<br />

loc<strong>at</strong>e nearly any k<strong>in</strong>d of leak quickly and<br />

easily. The tool also helps technicians and<br />

shop owners save money by elim<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

wasted time.<br />

A leak as small as 0.020 <strong>in</strong>ch <strong>in</strong> diameter<br />

can allow more than 30 times the amount<br />

to purchase new A/C equipment and tra<strong>in</strong><br />

h<strong>is</strong> staff to make the switch from R-134a<br />

refrigerant to R-1234yf. But so far, h<strong>is</strong> shop<br />

has not seen vehicles with the new<br />

refrigerant.<br />

“We’ll take th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> stride, just like we did<br />

when we went to R-134a,” he said.<br />

Reynolds said he sees<br />

recently. I was awed by<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g, and I thought I was on top of the<br />

market,” he said.<br />

To keep up with those changes, Reynolds<br />

said, cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educ<strong>at</strong>ion for h<strong>is</strong><br />

technicians <strong>is</strong> imper<strong>at</strong>ive. “If you don’t<br />

allow your technicians to do th<strong>at</strong>, if you<br />

don’t reward them for do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong>, you’re<br />

gonna be a mom-and-pop gas st<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />

out of bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>in</strong> five years.” n<br />
