The plight of the allergy sufferer is a life of fear
of season’s change and the plying of medications
to treat their multiple symptoms. Each year,
hundreds of millions of individuals worldwide
mask their allergy symptoms with a variety of over-thecounter
and prescription medications. There is, however,
a lasting treatment available for certain types of allergies.
Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) has been used
for over one hundred years in the treatment of allergic
disease. It is indicated for the treatment of allergic
rhinitis (hay fever), allergic asthma, and stinging insect
allergy (i.e. bee sting allergy). There is no medication in
the injections, but rather the exact allergens to which a
patient is sensitized as detected through skin testing.
Rather than inhaling the allergen (or being stung), it is
given as a subcutaneous injection(s). Its mechanism of
action in generating immunity is therefore similar to any
other vaccines that patients receive, such as the flu shot or
tetanus shot.
Since patients are allergic to the contents of the injections, the
dose is built-up weekly over a period of several months until a
maintenance dose is achieved. This maintenance dose is then
administered once per month over a period of approximately
3-5 years. Most patients see a significant reduction in symptoms
and medication use within the first year of receiving allergy
shots. Ultimately, the goal is to shift a person’s immune system

medications over the long-term to try to control the symptoms
of allergic disease. By using the power of one’s own immune
