Getting to Glasgow
Transport within Glasgow
The University of Glasgow is the fourth
oldest university in the English-speaking
world. Founded in 1451, it has spent the
last half millennium earning an international
reputation for research innovation, making
connections with experts in global business,
and inspiring thinkers from eminent scientist
Lord Kelvin to the father of economics Adam
Smith. Building on such vast experience, it’s
no surprise that Glasgow is in the top 1% of
the world’s universities today, according to the
Times Higher Education Supplement World
Rankings.
Glasgow’s research strengths are diverse and growing.
In 2006-7, research awards reached £103m placing the
institution in the top ten in the UK, and reinforcing its
position as a member of the Russell Group of 20 major
research universities. With a 2,500-strong research staff
committed to translating the discoveries they make
into real benefits for industry, Glasgow assisted more
than 270 companies with commercial research, filed 36
new patents and granted 20 new intellectual property
licences last year alone.
By air: Glasgow International Airport
(tel: +44 (0)870 0400008, www.glasgowairport.com) is
situated approximately ten miles west of the University.
A taxi from the airport to the University costs roughly £20.
An airport bus goes to Buchanan Bus Station which is
situated in the centre of the city. A taxi journey from there
to the University will cost roughly £7.
Glasgow Prestwick International Airport
(tel: +44 (0) 1292 511000, www.gpia.co.uk). The airport is
situated 22 miles south-west of the University. There is a
railway station at the airport and an airport bus service
to the city centre. Journey time takes around 45 minutes.
By rail: Two train stations in the city centre – Queen Street
and Central (served by Buchanan St and St Enoch
underground stations respectively) – link to all major cities
in the UK. There are frequent services to Edinburgh (50
minutes) and London (five hours).
By coach: Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre
(served by Buchanan St underground station) is the main
terminus for long-distance coaches.
Every year these same academics help the institution
to provide an education that inspires respect from
employers and satisfaction from students. The University
of Glasgow has more than 15,000 undergraduates,
4,900 postgraduates and 3,500 adult learners from 120
countries around the globe.
The University also has an important role to play as an
employer of more than 6,000 staff and a unique cultural
centre that attracts more than 150,000 visitors a year.
These are just a few of the reasons why Glasgow
is sure the next 550 years will be even better.
Great Western Road (A82, north of campus), Clydeside
Expressway (A814, south) and Byres Road (B808, west).
Car parking on the University campus and surrounding
area is extremely difficult.
Buses
Route 44 runs through the main campus from the city
centre. Numerous other routes serve Dumbarton Road,
Great Western Road and Byres Road. A seasonal tourist
bus stops at the University.
Underground
The main station for the University is Hillhead. Kelvinhall
and Kelvinbridge stations are more convenient for some
locations (see map of Glasgow).
Local trains
The nearest suburban rail station is Partick, about one mile
to the west of the University. It has an interchange with the
underground and with bus services on Dumbarton Road.
Taxis
Black taxi cabs can be picked up at most times in the
University area and the city centre.
Cycle racks
Cycle racks are provided on campus at A21, B3, B4, E1
and E2 (see Main campus map overleaf).
