The Academic Education
• Establishment of graduate studies of preventive conservation in 2008 was initiated by the former<br />
Department for Preventive Conservation DIANA, National Museum in Belgrade. Studies were<br />
implemented from 2008 until 2011 as a joint program of the Belgrade University and the University<br />
of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonn.<br />
• Since 2009/2010 academic year newly established Centre for Education in Central Institute for<br />
Conservation in Belgrade took he role of organizer.<br />
• In 2011/2012 academic year, studies program will be based at Faculty of Media and<br />
Communications-Singidunum University.<br />
• Basic academic programs and PhD studies from conservation-restoration of heritage will be<br />
provided in 2012, as well as master studies.
• Academic studies include three main programs :<br />
1. Basic studies in conservation (3+2)<br />
2. Master studies:<br />
‣ Preventive conservation of heritage<br />
‣ Conservation-restoration of the museum, archive and library materials<br />
‣ Conservation-restoration of architectural and monumental heritage<br />
‣ Integration of heritage protection biocultural heritage<br />
3. Doctoral Studies:<br />
‣ Theory of heritage protection<br />
‣ Preventive conservation of heritage<br />
‣ Curative conservation and restoration of cultural property<br />
‣ Preservation of Intangible Heritage<br />
‣ Traditional knowledge and intellectual property protection<br />
‣ Integrative biocultural heritage protection
The purpose of establishing academic studies of the Central Institute for Conservation in<br />
Belgrade:<br />
Introducing the concept of preventive conservation as a coherent system of strategic planning<br />
of protection of cultural heritage.<br />
‣ Identification and analysis of the degradation of cultural heritage, as well as management<br />
techniques, aiming to control the process of decay.<br />
‣ Making informed and justifiable decisions in preventive conservation, as an integral part of<br />
institutional activities and conservation projects.<br />
‣ Initiate cooperation among professionals from different cultural heritage institutions.
• Studies program were designed as a multi-disciplinary, with a view to introduce preventive<br />
conservation in museums, archives and library in Serbia and other countries in the region.<br />
• The curriculum is based largely on practical exercises that take place in different museums of the<br />
region of Belgrade and Vojvodina, while lectures are held at the University.
Conservation and Restoration
Conservation workshops<br />
• Continuing the tradition of training in the field of conservation<br />
of ceramics (since 1997 in department Diana, National<br />
Museum in Belgrade)<br />
• The basic course is no longer as intensive - each fall and spring<br />
workshops are organized lasting for 4 months and take place<br />
once a week<br />
• Workshops are designed for graduate archaeologists, art<br />
historians, ethnologists, painters, sculptors, conservators and<br />
students from these areas who are interested in the field of<br />
cultural heritage<br />
• Over 81 student finished the basic level, from each workshop<br />
several participants continue their training – now as<br />
volunteers and interns<br />

The title of conservator<br />
• Basics in theory of conservation and additional literature,<br />
practical training in conservation of ceramics, glass, metal,<br />
paintings<br />
• Additional training for colleagues employed in museums<br />
The title of conservator is gained after<br />
• one year probation work in an institution for protection of cultural<br />
heritage<br />
• passing the state exam<br />
o an essay on a given topic or a project worked on for the past year<br />
o theoretical exams, including the basics of museology and the<br />
conservation and restoration of cultural heritage<br />
Since the establishment of the Institute over 30 people were trained, they passed<br />
the state exam and gained the title of CONSERVATOR<br />

Summer schools for conservation 2011<br />
• Organised near the archaeological sites for the participants of younger generation who<br />
do not have experience in conservation<br />
• theoretical lectures on the typology of ceramics<br />
• pottery technology basics,<br />
• preventive conservation<br />
• conservation – restoration treatment<br />
Participants had the opportunity to visit the archaeological sites and understand it’s historical<br />
and cultural value, enabling them to appreciate there own cultural heritage.<br />
School on Kale-Krsevica was organized in collaboration with<br />
Archaeological Institute and National Museum in Belgrade<br />
School on Archeo-ethno park Ravna was organized in collaboration with<br />
Museum in Knjazevac, with the financial support from the Ministry of culture and<br />

and environmental conditions analysis, identifying<br />

• Total of 75-85 participants from 50-60 institutions for<br />
protection of cultural heritage, attend each cycle of<br />
workshops<br />
• During 2010. the Institute had 6 requests for assessment<br />
of conditions for conservation of collections, in 2011. we<br />
had 8 and in first 4 months of 2012. 9<br />
