Touro Welcomes New
President and CEO
J
ames T. Montgomery, FACHE, a
healthcare executive with more
than 30 years experience and
strong ties to the New Orleans
community, has been appointed
President and CEO of Touro Infirmary.
A native of
Arkansas,
Montgomery
has spent his
adult life and
professional
career in
Louisiana.
“Touro has a
legacy as a
faith-based
James T. Montgomery
organization that
provides quality healthcare and
excellent physicians,” Montgomery
said. “My roots — family, friends,
professional — are in Louisiana, so
from a personal standpoint it was very
appealing to move back and
reconnect.”
Most recently, Montgomery served
as CEO at Corpus Christi Medical
Center, a healthcare system owned by
the Hospital Corporation of America,
where he led a group of four hospitals.
Prior to his work in Texas,
Montgomery led Rapides Regional
Medical Center in Alexandria and served
as CEO of Tulane University Hospital &
Clinic, playing an integral role in the
organization’s post-Katrina recovery
efforts.
“Health care is unique in some
ways to whatever community you find
Notes from the
Executive Director
Summer
months are usually
less hectic than
the rest of the year.
Not at the
Foundation!
Thanks to an
enthusiastic group
of gala volunteers,
led by a super
organized chair,
Florence D. André
Nancy Bissinger,
the summer has been bubbling away
with energy and vigor. Our small staff
has been doing yeoman’s work trying to
meet the demands of a never-done-before
event while also doing our “regular” jobs.
The proof will soon be in the pudding
… Touro’s first-ever fundraising gala.
I am very proud to report that the
hospital recently honored one of our
own staff members, Foundation Associate
Ernie Nichols, by naming him Employee
of the Month for August. Ernie has been
at Touro for four years and, aside from
managing our database, he also writes
grant requests and helps oversee donor
stewardship. He is a beloved member
of our team. Congrats, Ernie!
In the meantime, Foundation staff
took time out to bid Foundation Focus
writer/editor, Katie Macaluso, a fond
farewell as she moves to North Carolina
in preparation for her forthcoming
wedding. In one short year Katie has
produced several highly acclaimed
publications. Always cheery, always
helpful, Katie — we wish you well!
In the midst of all of this kinetic energy,
the entire hospital staff and volunteers
will spend the next few weeks welcoming
new CEO Jim Montgomery and his wife
Donna to the Touro family in addition to
our new extended Children’s Hospital
family.
FAQs on Partnership With
Children’s Hospital
You ask, we answer. Below
are answers to some frequently
asked questions regarding
Touro’s newly finalized
affiliation with Children’s Hospital.
Q: Will the day-to-day operations of
Touro be affected by the partnership
A: Children’s Hospital and Touro
Infirmary continue to operate as
separate nonprofit entities. The two
hospitals have formed a medical
system governed by Louisiana
Children’s Medical Center (LCMC),
the parent corporation of both
Children’s Hospital and Touro
Infirmary. Representatives from Touro
and Children’s Hospital will serve on
the system board.
Q: Will Touro’s identity change
A: Both Touro and Children’s Hospital
will retain their current name and logo.
Touro has a rich history spanning 157
years, and the hospital’s leadership has
ensured that its identity remains
strong. The appointment of three
historical trustees, whose purpose it is
to ensure the continuity of the Touro
name and legacy as a Jewish, faithbased
hospital, is part of the
partnership agreement.
2
Q: How will Touro’s programs and
services be affected
A: LCMC will infuse at least $100
million in capital for Touro over the
next five years in support of our
strategic plan. Touro and Children’s
leadership meet regularly, looking for
and discussing positive synergies and
collaborative opportunities.
Q: Will my donations be handled or
used differently
A: Donations to the Touro Infirmary
Foundation will continue to be used
according to the purpose designated
by the donor. Despite the challenge of
operating in both this economic
climate and in a post-Katrina environment,
the Foundation remains the nonprofit
entity that supports Touro Infirmary
and its mission to provide quality
patient care, regardless of race, color,
creed, religious affiliation, or ability to
pay. The Foundation is also committed
to fostering community outreach and
funding health education. Stewardship
is a vital aspect of Touro’s values, and
the Foundation acts as a good
steward of the community’s generous
monetary support. We continue to
raise funds for important initiatives
and areas of need.
Touro Proudly Brews Starbucks
The Touro Coffee Shop, located on the first floor near
the Foucher Street entrance, now offers a full array of
Starbucks coffee drinks as well as salads, soups and
sandwiches. Coffee Shop hours are 6 a.m. - 4 p.m.,
Monday through Friday.

yourself in,” Montgomery said. “But I
believe that essentially any strong
organization starts with individuals
committed to quality care. You build
from that base to do the right thing
for the hospital
and for the
community at
large.”
Montgomery,
who served as
chairman of the
Louisiana
Hospital
Association from
2006-2007, knows the challenges
local hospitals have faced since 2005.
“The New Orleans market was of
course distorted by Hurricane
Katrina,” he said. “The loss of
population, loss of hospitals, higher
costs and reimbursement issues
proved to be the ingredients for
trouble.”
For Touro, the recently finalized
partnership with Children’s Hospital is
the next chapter in the 156-year-old
hospital’s post-Katrina story.
“The
affiliation
“
Touro has a legacy as a
faith-based organization that
provides quality healthcare and
excellent physicians.
”
between Touro
Infirmary and
Children’s
Hospital is
unique in that it
is between an
adult
medical/surgical hospital and a
children’s hospital,” Montgomery
said. “I have had experience in joint
ventures, in particular where there
was a convergence of cultures, so I
am excited to utilize that experience
to help bring about a positive result.”
Donation Boosts Activities
The Rotary Club
of Algiers
recently asked
Woldenberg Village
what it could donate
to benefit residents.
After a BBQ for
residents, it was
decided that a gas
grill would be the
perfect addition to the
facility.
“We want to
continue to provide interesting activities, such as dinner parties, for our residents,”
said Tonya Gillespie, Executive Director of Woldenberg Village.
Gillespie said Woldenberg is planning an upcoming “Food for the Soul” event,
featuring Master Chef and Rotarian Ronnie Seaton to cook for both the
residents and the public.
Accepting the $1,000 donation for the grill from Stanley B. Gill, president of
the Rotary Club of Algiers, is, from right, Tonya Gillespie, Woldenberg
Marketing Associate Janice Glaeser and Woldenberg resident Rose Sacks.
INTERN INPUT
Intern candidates are sent to Touro
Volunteer Services through the Tulane
Center for Public Service. Through
Tulane’s Public Service Internship Program,
students earn 3 credit hours and complete
their second tier graduation requirement
by completing a 60-70 hour internship
with a community site and a coordinating
internship seminar.
“I have witnessed the effect that
joyful, giving, therapists can have on the
patients who come to you seeking your
help and expertise; watching a patient’s
face light up as his therapist approaches is
a beautiful thing indeed. I hope to bring
all that I have learned at Touro with me
as I pursue my own career in Occupational
Therapy, so that I, too, can be a therapist
whose patients respect her and whose
work can truly make a difference and
make their lives better.”
- Andrée Gooch, OT Intern
“Being able to interact with the
physical therapists, occupational therapists,
speech pathologists, nurses, and case
managers has allowed me to see what it
really takes to take care of each individual
patient. Coming to know how each one
of these members works as a team to
provide patient care has been incredibly
eye opening.”
- Patrick V. DiCosimo, Shadowed
Residents in Phys. Med. and Rehab
“I was very impressed at how outgoing
and down-to-earth the staff was in the
Cath Lab. The times I spent conversing
with the staff and doctors will be the
most missed because I gained so much
information regarding the medical field
and what it takes to be successful as a
doctor or nurse. The overall impression I
got from the Touro community of
professionals is they treat patients with
the utmost care.”
- Rashed Mahmud, Cath Lab Intern
Students Experience Real-Life Healthcare
Donning blue scrub tops and exuding an air of excitement, a group of junior
and senior high school students recently took part in the second annual
Touro Health Career Camp. The 30 students, a 66% increase in enrollment
from last year, participated in 10 clinical rotations including cardiology,
clinical nutrition, nursing, emergency medical technology, pharmacy, radiology,
respiratory, physical, occupational and speech therapy.
The camp’s goal is to promote careers in nursing and allied health by giving the
students an opportunity to observe some actual patient procedures, and, in some
cases, have a taste of hands-on experience. More than 70 Touro staff members
participated in the classes.
Special sessions included a disaster drill led by Emergency Services, a field trip to
the new Imaging Center
and Woldenberg Village,
Web-based career
research in the computer
labs, and a “Parade of
Panelists,” featuring more
than a dozen clinical and On the first day of the camp, students learned
CPR as part of orientation.
nonclinical Touro
professionals.
Students also had the opportunity to meet with college
recruiters including representatives from Delgado Community
College – Charity School of Nursing & Division of Allied Health;
Dillard University; LSU Health Sciences Center, School of Nursing;
Our Lady of Holy Cross College Allied Health and Nursing
Students received a tour of an ambulance, provided by Acadian
Ambulance.
Programs; Xavier University College of Pharmacy.
This year’s program was funded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, Keller Family Foundation and
the Walmart Foundation. For more information, contact Denise Chetta, Director of Volunteer Services, at 504-897-8107.
Camper Comments
“Before the rehab session, I underestimated the struggles handicapped
people face on a daily basis. Now I think I will be more understanding
and patient with them.”

“The cancer field seemed really interesting and rewarding.”

“I loved that we got to look through the window at a real operation. I
also really liked the pretend operation we did.”
Students in Touro’s Health Career Camp took
part in a mock operation on a chicken breast.
Staff helped prep them for the “surgery.”

“The camp helped me see the career paths as more than just a job, but
as doing good for someone else.”
Junior Volunteers Bring New Life to Touro
This summer’s group of Junior Volunteers made a
tangible impact throughout Touro, logging over
2,100 hours and working in more than 36
departments, from Patient Registration and the
Gift Shop to the Cardiology and neonatal
Intensive Care Units.
The 31 Junior Volunteers, ages 13-
18, came to Touro from 15 schools
including Academy of Our Lady,
Archbishop Chapelle, Archbishop
Rummel High, Brother Martin, Cabrini
High, Holy Cross High School,
McDonough 35 High, Mt. Carmel
Academy, New Orleans Charter Science
and Math, Picayune Junior High in
Mississippi, St. Martin’s Episcopal, St.
Mary’s Dominican, Warren Easton, and
Xavier College Preparatory High.
Junior Volunteers serve as an important part of Touro’s
volunteer program because they provide a wonderful
Junior Volunteer Catey Smith, a sophomore at
St. Mary’s Dominican High School, chats with
Mayer Cohen while visiting Woldenberg Village
as part of a Service Day.
service to the hospital during a time when extra help is
greatly needed.
“Shanika Lumzy was the best junior volunteer we
have had — very mature and polite, and she was a
tremendous help on the sales floor,”
said Jeanette Lauve, manager of the
Gift Shop.
The juniors have computer, patient
relations and clerical skills that are
transferable to almost any department
in the hospital.
“Kaelon Guillory was a very pleasant
and bright young man,” said Sandra
LeBlanc, R.N., in One-Day Surgery. “He
was always willing to work and took the
initiative to perform other tasks without
being instructed to do so. We enjoyed
having him this summer.”
Wilklow Honored With 2009
Dhurandhar Award
Touro In the News ...
T
he American Cancer Society has once again
recognized Touro staff members as Spirit Award
winners for their contributions to the fight
against cancer. Scott Sonnier, M.D., a hematologist,
and Paula Harrelson, RN, an oncology nurse, will be
honored at the ACS’s Ninth Annual Hope Gala on
August 22.

In June, Dr. Frank Wilklow was honored as this year’s
recipient of The Raja W. Dhurandhar Award. Pictured from left
are Dr. Wilklow, Dr. Nina Dhurandhar and Dr. Roberto Quintal.
The award was established to honor Dr. Dhurandhar, who
was the Chief of Cardiology at Touro for many years. He is credited
with establishing the first coronary care unit in the city, as well as
Touro’s first comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program. This
award is conferred on a yearly basis to the second year fellow in
cardiology who best reflects the qualities that made Dr.
Dhurandhar an excellent cardiologist, physician, teacher and friend.
6
The results are in for “Nola Baby” Magazine’s annual
readers survey, and Touro is still the “Best Hospital
for Having a Baby”!
Janet Ross, M.D., Donna Waters, M.D., and
Rebecca Perret, M.D., were honored as “Best
OB/GYN.” Drs. Ross and Waters were also deemed
“Best OB for Multiple Births.”
Christopher Lege, M.D., and Jennifer Bertsch, M.D.,
took home honors in the “Best Family Physician”
category.

A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR
We have passed the
halfway mark in
2009, and Touro
has accomplished two
important feats — finalizing its partnership
with Children’s Hospital and welcoming a
new president and CEO, James T.
Montgomery, FACHE.
Just as leadership is critical in this new
phase of Touro’s history, so is the continued
support for the Touro Infirmary Foundation,
which is committed to the hospital’s
mission of providing the highest quality
and most compassionate patient care.
Funds donated to the Foundation are
used to support both ongoing and new
