Accommodation<br />

<strong>The</strong> lecturers are housed at New Era Hotel.<br />

All students will be accommodated at Huada Hotel during the time <strong>of</strong> the<br />

summer school. In order to promote communication among students, one<br />

Chinese student and one international student will share a double room.<br />

Meals will be served at Nanfangyuan restaurant.<br />

Registration<br />

<strong>The</strong> summer school registration check-in support will be open from 12:00 pm<br />

19/09 to 20:00pm 20/09 at the hall <strong>of</strong> Science and Technology Building <strong>of</strong><br />

Nanjing <strong>University</strong>, which provides easy and quick access by walking from the<br />

hotel.<br />

Please pick up your summer school package at the summer school registration<br />

Excursion Guidelines<br />

<strong>The</strong> Yangshan Tablet Stones are related to<br />

Chinese history: In 1405, with the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

extolling and memorizing his father Zhuyuan<br />

Zhang, Zhu Di (the emperor <strong>of</strong> Ming Dynasty)<br />

recruited some famous skilled craftsmen<br />

throughout the country to excavate three huge<br />

tablet stones on Yangshan. One stone is 17 meters<br />

high, with a width <strong>of</strong> 29.5 meters and a thickness <strong>of</strong><br />

12 meters, totally 16.25 million kilograms. Another<br />

one is 51 meters high, 14.2 wide, 4.5 meters thick<br />

and 8.799 million kilograms. <strong>The</strong> third stone is 10 meters high, 22 meters wide,<br />

10.3 meters thick and 6.118 million kilograms. If we combine the three stones<br />

together, they will form a huge complete stele, which is 78 meters, as high as a<br />

building <strong>of</strong> 28 stories. And the weight <strong>of</strong> the huge stele is 31.167 million<br />

kilograms, a rare stele and a marvelous spectacle in the world.<br />

<strong>The</strong> discovery <strong>of</strong> Nanjing Tangshan Australopithecus was a major<br />

archaeological breakthrough following<br />

Yunnan Yun Mou, Shaanxi Lantian,<br />

Beijing Zhoukoudian, and Anhui<br />

ape-man. After 1995, the place is open<br />

to visitors.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Nanjing man is a subspecies <strong>of</strong><br />

Homo erectus found in China. Male and<br />

female skulls <strong>of</strong> Nanjing man were discovered in 1993 in Tangshan cave near<br />

Nanjing, and they have been dated to be<br />

about 580,000 to 620,000 years old. <strong>The</strong><br />

Nanjing man finding supports the<br />

multi-regional evolution model that argues<br />

modern Asia populations evolved directly<br />

from Asia Homo erectus, rather than<br />

evolving from populations out <strong>of</strong> Africa.<br />
