Here is the tail of how Garry
Gross went from fashion
photography to the dogs. For
30 years Gary photographed the
covers of magazines like GQ,
Cosmopolitan, and New York
Magazine and celebrities like
Calvin Klein, Gloria Steinem,
Whitney Houston, and Lou
Reed. That, after apprenticing
with Francesco Scavullo, Lisette
Model, and Richard Avedon.
Unexpectedly the bottom
dropped out of his career and
it served as a warning to all
photographers that signed
model releases are no guarantee
of protection. In 1975 Gary
photographed a nude 10-year
old Brooke Shields. Despite two
properly executed releases,
Shield’s mother sued him in
civil court. Fortunately the
judge in the case concluded that
“Garry Gross is not a pornographer
but a photographer
of extraordinary talent.” That
should have settled the matter,
but the tremendous publicity
in the case caused his previous
employers to turn away. That
effectively ended his fashion
career.
What does a man do at such
a juncture in life? Look for
something that he would really,
really like to do. So he wrote on
a piece of paper things that
excited him. As a child he loved
animals. He had fish, cats,
hamsters, and lots of dogs.
The dogs won out.
In 2002 Garry attended and
graduated from the Animal
Behavior Center of New York as
a certified dog trainer. It was
only natural that Garry joined
his two loves, dogs and photography.
Looking at his detailed,
beautifully lighted portraits
on his website, I am reminded
of the exquisite images of the
Canadian portrait photographer
Joseph Karsh. Garry’s images
have an inherent intimacy.
The dogs look out at you as if
expecting you to whisper some
secret. The techniques he has
developed in working with dogs
are based on his deep love and
understanding of them. Older
dogs in particular have a
message in their eyes.
How Garry works with his
subjects I leave for the luncheon.
A combination of the methods
of the psychologist BF Skinner
and the lighting techniques he
used with cosmetics. As well as
a generous helping of patience.
President’s Note
I have been President and Treasurer of PAI for many years. It has been an opportunity to meet
great photographers and see their work. And it has been an opportunity to honor the
work of our own talented members.
It has also been a long and consuming experience. Tina and I have deferred many trips, many opportunities to see
and do other things. So I think it time to listen to that inner voice, the one that says,” Do things while you still can.”
Therefore, I will be stepping down as PAI President on January 1, 2011. I will continue on the board and provide
whatever help I can. I am sure that the PAI has in its ranks other members who will successfully lead PAI into the future.
With all best wishes,
PAI’s 50th Anniversary Luncheon
Touching, informative, funny, inspiring and nostalgic, just a few
of the adjectives heard describing PAI’s historic 50th celebration.
In addition to stories told by our past presidents Marge Neikrug,
Len Stern, and Al Francekevich, we saw Nobles Lowe, Tony Vaccaro,
Marvin Newman, Al Gescheidt and Rebecca Lepkoff.
Alden James, President of the National Arts Club, dropped by with
opening remarks about PAI’s early beginnings at the NAC and assured
members that the club will continue rolling out the red carpet for
our programs.
Marge Neikrug, up from Florida for the occasion, shared her memories
of the genesis of PAI and recalled the days she and Regina Reynolds
were the first women invited to join the group.
With the time capsule opened, others followed, recounting fascinating
and hilarious stories. Marvin Newman’s tale of unwittingly causing a
major chemical spill in the Time Life darkroom; Tony Vaccaro’s spirited
saga of Flair magazine’s editor assigning him a fashion shoot when his
only photographic experience had been in combat; and Al Francekevich’s
astonishment that he was seated at the same table as Philippe Halsman
and Leopold Godowsky (co-inventor of Kodachrome). So many
wonderful stories and clearly a magical time.
One last note, members enjoyed Bob Sharpe’s slide show of Imagist
covers throughout the years. Running only six minutes, it condensed
dozens of images taken by the talented photographers who have
spoken at PAI.
Being privy to stories like these was a reminder that this is precisely
the reason I joined PAI. It doesn’t exist anywhere else.
luncheon, held at the National Arts Club.
