In 2008 Nikola Kojic became the first ever student from the
Commerce/Accounting industry field to be awarded a UNISS
(University of Newcastle Industry Scholarship Scheme)
scholarship.
As a Bradken-sponsored student Nikola began part-time work
placements at Bradken’s Head Office working in the Industrial
Division. Since then he has gained valuable practical experience as
a Trainee Accountant working in a number of Bradken’s Australian
facilities and has been involved in the integration and implementation
of Bradken systems into newly acquired facilities.
Most recently, Nikola has taken up a full-time role as a Financial
Accountant with Bradken’s Rail Division based in Newcastle, Australia.
What have been the highlights of your career with Bradken so far
“Working at Bradken has given me the opportunity to travel all over Australia,
including my first ever trips to Far North Queensland and Western Australia. The
highlight of my time with Bradken has been my involvement in the acquisition of
Bradken’s Acacia Ridge facility and the subsequent integration of the foundry
into the Bradken culture.”
What development opportunities has Bradken provided for you
“Bradken has provided me with much practical exposure in the field of accounting
and financial management. Throughout my degree, my ‘on the job’ experiences
meant that I was better able to understand the theory of my classes and associate
it with real world experiences at work.”
What are your thoughts on working at Bradken
“Bradken has a very welcoming culture underpinned by a strong set of values
which can be applied not only professionally, but to everyday life. In such an
environment, where development and continuous improvement are always
encouraged, I can see a long and bright future with Bradken.”
What is your advice for graduates considering a career with Bradken
“Say YES to all opportunities and don’t be afraid of failing.”
In 2008, Reece Attwood was the first Bradken-sponsored student
to graduate from the University of Newcastle Industry Scholarship
Scheme (UNISS) with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree.
Reece has excelled during his time with Bradken and was recognised
with the Young Employee of the Year Award at the 2010 Bradken
Employee Recognition Awards.
Reece has been involved in the design and development of some of
Bradken’s most innovative new products which are currently in use at
major mine sites all over the world.
In having been promoted to Senior Design Engineer with the GET
& Buckets business, Reece has taken advantage of the numerous
development opportunities offered by Bradken to now lead a small
team of engineers working on the development of differentiated
dragline products.
What have been the highlights of your career with Bradken so far
“I was heavily involved in the development of Bradken’s patented Harmonise TM
dragline rigging products and have been given the opportunity to travel
domestically and internationally to some of the world’s major mining centres.”
What development opportunities has Bradken provided for you
“I have taken part in a range of courses, most relating to engineering practices,
CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software, and more recently leadership and
management courses including a Certificate IV in Frontline Management.”
What are your thoughts on working at Bradken
“Any major company claims to adhere to a set of values, but Bradken
unquestionably practices what it preaches. I have watched the Bradken culture
continue to develop in recent years through careful recruitment. Bradken’s core
values, particularly integrity, loyalty and motivation are predominant in all new
staff. This type of culture sits well with me and makes Bradken a great place to
be.
I could not have asked for a better start to my career with the training and support
Bradken has given. There is no shortage of truth in the motto ‘Proud to Belong’.”
What is your advice for graduates considering a career with Bradken
“The hard work now is well worth it – you will be looked after at Bradken.”

With his career still in its infancy, James Armstrong has
achieved more in his short time with Bradken than most
engineering graduates would dare dream possible.
James started working at Bradken in 2006 as a Bradkensponsored
student participating in the University of Newcastle
Industry Scholarship Scheme (UNISS). Since completing his studies
in 2011, James has taken up a full time role as a Design Engineer for
the Rail Division and has worked on a range of projects including the
design of Bradken’s new world-class foundry in Xuzhou, China.
James’ many achievements were recognised in 2011 when he was
presented with the Young Employee of the Year Award at the annual
Bradken Employee Recognition Awards.
Since graduating in 2010 as a Bradken-sponsored Chemical
Engineering student participating in the University of Newcastle Industry
Scholarship Scheme (UNISS), Joel Smith has had the opportunity to
work across a number of Bradken’s Mining Products businesses.
In his current role as Product Development Engineer for Fixed Plant,
Joel has travelled across the country, and the world, gaining valuable
in-field experience and accessing the latest technologies and best
manufacturing practices the industry has to offer.
With a view to one day securing a Management position within the
Company Joel has taken advantage of the development opportunities
offered by Bradken as he works towards his future career goals.
What have been the highlights of your career with Bradken so far
“Being given the chance to be involved in the design of a foundry is likely a once
in a lifetime opportunity, and for someone so young it was a very exciting and
challenging experience. However, the biggest highlight of my time with Bradken
so far has been being nominated for and subsequently winning the Young
Employee of the Year award in 2011.”
What development opportunities has Bradken provided for you
“Bradken has provided me with an amazingly diverse range of opportunities and
experiences beyond the expectations of my career. Since starting with Bradken
as a scholarship student in 2006 I have fulfilled the role of a Design Engineer
receiving broad experience in different areas of engineering, travelling locally and
internationally and having the opportunity to be involved in many large projects
for the business.”
What are your thoughts on working at Bradken
“Bradken is a company that encourages long term employment. Bradken has a
great culture, a comfortable work environment and a strong commitment to work
life balance for all employees.”
What is your advice for graduates considering a career with Bradken
“Bradken will enable you to be proactive in your employment, to learn other
areas of the business and get involved in new projects that will challenge your
understanding and expand your experience.”
What have been the highlights of your career with Bradken so far
“I have travelled all over Australia working for Bradken, and I have had the
opportunity to work on a number of innovative projects. But the highlight so far
would have to be travelling to Papua New Guinea and seeing a part of the world
I would probably not have had the opportunity to see.”
What development opportunities has Bradken provided for you
“I studied chemical engineering at university as part of a cadetship with Bradken.
During this time and since, Bradken has allowed me to get in-field experience,
work with cutting edge technology, see world’s best manufacturing practices in
action and work on exciting and innovative projects. Bradken has also provided
continued training opportunities enabling me to work towards my future career
goals.”
What are your thoughts on working at Bradken
“Bradken is a great company to work for and there are a lot of opportunities on
offer as its global footprint continues to expand. I can see myself developing my
career at Bradken for a long time to come.”
What is your advice for graduates considering a career with Bradken
“Be yourself during interviews and look for a role in a field that will genuinely
interest you.”
